Gönen Stream, which is about 134 km in length, arises from the Ida Mountains near Balıkesir and flows out near Misakça to the Sea of Marmara. In order to determine the freshwater amphipod species of Gönen Stream, 8 seasonal samplings were conducted between June 2010 and June 2012. Samplings were made at 16 stations located between the upper and lower parts of the stream. As a result of the study, 3 amphipod species were found, one of which is new to science: Gammarus gonensis sp. Nov. The newly described species belongs to the Gammarus pulex-group. Anatomical And Morphological Study Of The Kidneys Of The Breeding Emu (Dromaius Novaehollandiae), Katarzyna Michalek, Danuta Szczerbinska, Marta Grabowska, Danuta Majewska, Maria Laszczynska

We analyzed 16 kidneys obtained from 15-year-old emus, Dromaius novaehollandiae. Emus were kept at an experimental farm in Poland. The results showed that each kidney was composed of 3 parts: cranial, medial, and caudal divisions. Histological results demonstrated that the kidneys consisted of 2 zones: the cortex and the medulla. The cortex made up the majority of the kidney, while the medulla formed only a small portion of the organ. Proximal and distal tubules and 2 types of glomeruli (looped and loopless) were localized in the cortex. Each of these glomeruli was characterized by tightly arranged mesangial cells. Proximal and …

Comparison Of The Chromosome Banding Patterns In Dryomys Laniger And D. Nitedula From Turkey, Ati̇lla Arslan, Teoman Kankiliç, Tarkan Yorulmaz, Tolga Kankiliç, Jan Zima

The karyotypes of Dryomys laniger and D. Nitedula from Turkey were studied using C-banding and AgNOR staining. The standard karyotypes found in both species were fairly similar to previously published data (2n = 46, NF = 92 in D. Laniger; 2n = 48, NF = 96 in D. Nitedula). The C-banding pattern revealed a relatively small amount of heterochromatin in both karyotypes and C-heterochromatin was concentrated at centromeric areas of most autosomes and the X chromosome. Heterochromatin changes have apparently not been responsible for karyotypic divergences between the studied species. The AgNORs were recorded in the pericentromeric region of two …

Some Hematological Parameters In Myotis Myotis And Myotis Blythii (Mammalia: Chiroptera) In Turkey, İrfan Albayrak, Hava Bağatur Özcan, Merve Baydemi̇r

In this study the reference ranges belonging to some hematological parameters of Myotis myotis and Myotis blythii, collected from three localities in Turkey in 2012 and 2013, are given for the first time. Bats were caught using a special bat net and they were released after the required amount of blood sample was taken. In Myotis myotis, erythrocyte diameter was recorded as 5.04 μm and the number of erythrocytes and leukocytes in 1 mm3 of blood was 11.35 × 106 and 4865, respectively. While the hemoglobin level was 14.9 g/dL, the hematocrit value was measured as 57.0%. The other values …

The gaur (Bos gaurus) is one of the two extant wild cattle species that can be found in several Asian countries. This species is threatened by extinction due to declining wild populations. Selembu is the name of the Malayan gaur × domestic cattle hybrid. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius, 1775), a polyphagous defoliator with broad host spectrum, causes significant damage to agriculturally important crops. Serine protease is primarily responsible for most of the proteolytic activity in the larval gut of lepidopteran insects. Second-instar larvae were reared on an artificial diet containing serine trypsin inhibitor partially purified from Glycine max seeds. Different concentrations were amended in the diet, i.e. 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 μg/mL. The larval development period, total developmental period, longevity, fecundity, larval weight, and mean relative growth rate were decreased at the 100 μg/mL concentration. Three new species of the genus Macroocula Panfilov, 1954 from Saudi Arabia are described and illustrated: M. Atuberculata Soliman and Gadallah sp. Nov. (Al-Quwayiyah, Al-Aflag, Al-Zulfi, and Riyadh), M. Zulfiensis Soliman and Gadallah sp. Nov. (Al-Zulfi and Riyadh), and M. Khorimensis Soliman and Gadallah sp. Nov. (Muzahimiyah and Riyadh). A key to Macroocula species with a ventral protuberance on the hind trochanter is provided.

The Community Members Associated With Rose Gall Wasp Diplolepis Fructuum (Rübsaamen, 1895) (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) In Tokat Province Of Turkey, Özlem Mete, Yusuf Orhan Mergen

Field studies were carried out in April, October, and November 2013 and March and October 2014 in Tokat Province of Turkey. Gall specimens of Diplolepis fructuum (Rübsaamen, 1895) (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) on host plants from the genus Rosa were collected. Thirteen species from six families were reared. Among them, Eurytoma caninae Lotfalizadeh and Delvare, 2007 and Aximopsis collina (Zerova, 1984) are new records for Turkey. The most common parasitoids are Eupelmus urozonus Dalman, 1820 and Stepanovia eurytomae (Nees, 1834), respectively.

This study investigated the effects of agroecosystems on predator-prey activities. Therefore, bats and insects were sampled from various agroecosystems using mist netting and light trapping techniques. A generalized linear model was then employed to analyze some biotic and abiotic factors' effects on insect and insectivorous bat activities. The results indicate that agroecosystems and lunar cycles have significant effects on insect activity (Lepidopteran, Dipteran, and total insect activity) and insectivorous bat activity (Hipposideros jonesi, Hipposideros aff. This 1-year study, extending from January to December 2011, was conducted to investigate the role of the Indian flying fox (Pteropus giganteus) as a seed disperser in Lahore, Pakistan. The plankton and semiplankton samples examined from a subtropical wetland of Shillong, Meghalaya, Northeast India (NEI), revealed seven new records of rotifers belonging to six genera and six families. These include five species new to the Indian Rotifera and two species new to the rotifer fauna of NEI, thus meriting interest in terms of biodiversity and distribution. All the species are illustrated to warrant validation. This study is based upon material of the subfamily Agathidinae collected from different localities in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey from 1988 to 2008. The study resulted in the recording for the Turkish fauna of 14 species belonging to 3 genera (Agathis Latreille, 1804; Bassus Fabricius, 1804; and Disophrys Förster, 1862) within the subfamily Agathidinae. Cuvier's beaked whales were sighted once on each of three different surveys over Antalya Canyon, in June and September 2015. Sightings took place in waters between 600 and 1000 m in depth and at 8 km from the closest shore. While the first sighting was positively identified as Cuvier's beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris (G. Cuvier, 1823)), latter sightings could not be identified to the species level. Hibernation is characterized by prolonged periods of inactivity with concomitantly low nutrient intake, conditions that would typically result in muscle atrophy combined with a loss of oxidative fibers. Yet, hibernators consistently emerge from winter with very little atrophy, frequently accompanied by a slight shift in fiber ratios to more oxidative fiber types. Preservation of muscle morphology is combined with down-regulation of glycolytic pathways and increased reliance on lipid metabolism instead. Furthermore, while rates of protein synthesis are reduced during hibernation, balance is maintained by correspondingly low rates of protein degradation. A study of 270 species belonging to 210 genera of the family Dolichopodidae was conducted to examine their characters of thorax chaetotaxy. The quantity of acrostichal setae series, number of dorsocentral setae pairs, and quantity and degree of developed scutellar setae were studied. The humeral, posthumeral, intraalar, notopleural, supraalar, postalar, and sutural setae were also investigated. Combinations of chaetotaxy characters typical of the family Dolichopodidae were discovered. A detailed analysis of these characters allowed for the determination of the diagnostic characters of the subfamilies. In air-breathing vertebrates at high altitude, fine-tuned adjustments in hemoglobin (Hb)–O2 affinity provide an energetically efficient means of mitigating the effects of arterial hypoxemia. However, it is not always clear whether an increased or decreased Hb–O2 affinity should be expected to improve tissue O2 delivery under different degrees of hypoxia, due to the inherent trade-off between arterial O2 loading and peripheral O2 unloading. Theoretical results indicate that the optimal Hb–O2 affinity varies as a non-linear function of environmental O2 availability, and the threshold elevation at which an increased Hb–O2 affinity becomes advantageous …

A revised annotated checklist of Mongolian mammals is presented, supplemented with comments on modifications in species- and genus-level taxonomy introduced over the last 30 years. The checklist includes 140 species compared to 124 species recognized three decades ago by SOKOLOV & ORLOV (1980). Since then, four species were newly described; seven species were registered for the first time on Mongolian territory. Why Babies Do Not Feel Pain, Or: How Structure-Derived Functional Interpretations Can Go Wrong, Helmut Segner

The response to pain involves a non-conscious, reflexive action and a conscious perception. According to Key (2016), consciousness — and thus pain perception — depends on a neuronal correlate that has a “unique neural architecture” as realized in the human cortex. On the basis of the “bioengineering principle that structure determines function,” Key (2016) concludes that animal species such as fish, which lack the requisite cortex-like neuroanatomical structure, are unable to feel pain. This commentary argues that the relationship between brain structure and brain function is less straightforward than suggested in Key’s target article.

Parasite diversity in and among various species of mammals within Mongolia is still poorly understood. The current paper focusses on a small part of the results of the Mongolian Vertebrate Parasite Project (MVPP), which entailed a broad-scale biodiversity survey of the vertebrates and their parasites of the Gobi and Altai regions of Mongolia. We report on the prevalence and morphological variation of larval cestodes of the family Taeniidae that occurred in small mammals that were collected from 2009-2012 from various locations in southern Mongolia. The fauna of Mongolian bats and their ectoparasites is not yet fully documented. This study analyzes ectoparasite samples of 15 bat species from diverse taiga, steppe, and desert locations. We recorded 27 parasite species in total and report their abundance, host preference, and occurrence herein. In describing a new bat fly species (Basilia dolchii n. spec.), reporting six parasite species never before recorded in Mongolia, and examining rare host species such as Myotis frater and Murina hilgendorfi, this work expands present knowledge in this research area. My thesis concerns observations of play activities from videotapes of Galápagos sea lions on San Cristóbal Island from mid-summer of 2008. I begin with a discussion of ideas about play and types of play, elaborate the conceptual system of projects and routines in play, and provide a brief description of sea lion taxonomy and forms of play specific to Galápagos sea lions. Observing approximately 713 minutes of videotapes, I coded approximately 161.5 minutes of play projects and routines.
