A detailed Mediterranean synonymy (= list of published records) and distributional map is offered for the Pacific jewel-box Chama pacifica Broderip, 1835, an alien mollusk invasive in the deep eastern Mediterranean Sea. A more detailed examination of the single specimen published from the Thermaikos Gulf led us to consider it as a juvenile of the native congeneric C. gryphoides Linnaeus, 1758. Seasonal Variation Of Small Mammals In The Diet Of The Barn Owl (Tyto Alba) In The Drinos River Valley, Southern Albania, Gligor Paspali, Selfo Oruçi, Mynyr Koni, Iain Frank Wilson, Boris Krystufek, Ferdinand Bego

The small mammal composition in the diet of barn owls from the Drinos River valley, southern Albania, was studied over the period of 1 year (September 2010-September 2011). A total of 662 pellets was collected and analyzed, and 1951 prey items were identified. Fourteen different small mammal species were identified (5 insectivores and 9 rodents), among which Microtus thomasi (frequency, F = 32.9%; biomass, B = 45.5%), Crocidura suaveolens (F = 23.5%; B = 9.4%), and Mus macedonicus (F = 17.8%; B = 16.3%) were the most abundant. Microstonyx (Suidae, Artiodactyla) From The Upper Miocene Of Hayranlı-Haliminhanı, Turkey, Jan Van Der Made, Erksi̇n Güleç, Ahmet Cem Erkman

The suid remains from localities 58-HAY-2 and 58-HAY-19 in the Late Miocene Derindere Member of the İncesu Formation in the Hayranlı-Haliminhanı area (Sivas, Turkey) are described and referred to as Microstonyx major (Gervais, 1848-1852). Microstonyx shows changes in incisor morphology, which are interpreted as a further adaptation to rooting. This occurred probably in a short period between 8.7 and 8.121 Ma ago and possibly is a reaction to environmental change. The incisor morphology in locality 58-HAY-2 suggests that it is temporally close to this change, which would imply that this locality and the lithostratigraphically lower 58-HAY-19 belong to the lower …

New Locality Record For Podarcis Siculus Hieroglyphicus (Berthold, 1842) (Squamata: Lacertidae) In The Western Black Sea Region Of Anatolia, Çeti̇n Ilgaz, Yusuf Kumlutaş, Mustafa Sözen

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Six specimens of Podarcis siculus hieroglyphicus from Filyos, Zonguldak Province, in the western Black Sea region were collected. This new record extended eastward seriously (ca. 250 km) the known distribution area of the subspecies in Turkey. The meristic (pholidolial) and metric (morphometric) characters and color-pattern features of specimens collected from Filyos, Zonguldak, are given in detail and compared with the specimens from other known Turkish localities with regard to the literature. The specimens examined were similar to P. siculus hieroglyphicus specimens mentioned in the literature.

This study was conducted to investigate helminth parasites of spotted newt (Neurergus strauchii) in Bingöl Province in 2010. Twenty-seven spotted newts were collected from a stream in the vicinity of Soğukpınar village located in the Genç district of Bingöl. Two species of helminthes were found from the collected samples. These are Cosmocerca commutata and Aplectana acuminata. This paper is the second study on spotted newt (Neurergus strauchii) in Turkey, but Aplectana acuminata is a new record for the host (N. strauchii) in Turkish helminth fauna.

The mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences of 34 haplotypes from 114 individuals of Eospalax baileyi and GenBank data of 40 haplotypes from 121 individuals of Eospalax cansus were used to investigate if the Quaternary glaciations on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) influenced the distribution and colonisation of these 2 species, and if both species presented congruous past population dynamics. The phylogenetic tree indicated a valid status for the genera Eospalax and Myospalax, and an independent species status for E. baileyi and E. cansus. The Bearded Tit (Panurus biarmicus) is a small passerine bird occurring only in wetland habitats. Three subspecies of the Bearded Tit are known from Turkey. The endemic subspecies Panurus biarmicus kosswigi has only been recorded from Amik Lake in Turkey. This subspecies is now considered extinct; the apparent cause of this extinction was the drought affecting the lake. Other subpopulations might be similarly threatened by habitat loss. Therefore, it is important to investigate the morphometric characteristics and genetic variation of these local subpopulations. Contributions To The Knowledge Of Agathidinae Fauna Of The Eastern Anatolia Region Of Turkey, Özlem Çeti̇n Erdoğan

In this study, Agathidinae (Braconidae: Hymenoptera) fauna of the Elazığ, Erzincan, Malatya, and Tunceli provinces of the Eastern Anatolia Region was investigated during the years 2007 and 2008. During the study period, 17 species were identified belonging to the genera Agathis Latreille, 1804; Bassus Fabricius, 1804; and Disophrys Förster, 1862. Two species were recorded from Turkey for the first time: Agathis tatarica Telenga, 1933 and Bassus tegularis (Thomson, 1895). All of these species are new to the fauna of the 4 provinces of the Eastern Anatolia Region.

In this study, karyotypic and cytogenetic characteristics of Drassyllus praeficus (L. Koch, 1866) and Thanatus imbecillus (L. Koch, 1878) were investigated for the first time by examining mitotic and meiotic chromosomes obtained from gonad cells. The number and the sex chromosome system of D. praeficus and T. imbecillus males was 2n = 22 (X_{1}X_{2}0) and 2n = 28 (X_{1}X_{2}0), respectively. D. praeficus had 10 autosomal bivalents and 2 univalent sex chromosomes, and T. imbecillus had 13 autosomal bivalents and 2 univalent sex chromosomes during the first meiotic prophase and metaphase. Both species possessed acrocentric chromosomes in their karyotypes.

Comparative Study On Muscle Nutritional Composition Of Juvenile Bighead Carp (Aristichthys Nobilis) And Paddlefish (Polyodon Spathula) Fed Live Feed, Pei Song Shi, Qin Wang, Yu Ting Zhu, Qian Hong Gu, Bang Xi Xiong

The contents of the proximate composition of amino acids and fatty acids in the muscle of juvenile bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis) and paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) that were fed with live feed for 60 days were assessed in this investigation. The moisture, crude protein, and crude ash contents of bighead carp muscle were slightly higher than those of paddlefish (P > 0.05). The crude fat content of paddlefish muscle was significantly higher than that of bighead carp (P < 0.01). Seventeen amino acids were detected in the muscle of both bighead carp and paddlefish. The total concentrations of amino acids (TAAs), essential amino acids (EAAs), and delicious amino acids (DAAs) in the muscle of bighead carp were higher than in those of paddlefish. Fifteen fatty acids were detected in both bighead carp and paddlefish muscles, including 5 saturated fatty acids (SFAs), 4 monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The concentrations of muscle \sum SFAs, \sum MUFAs, \sum PUFAs, \sum UFAs, \sum SFAs/\sum UFAs, \sum n-6 PUFAs, \sum n-3 PUFAs, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), EPA + docosahexenoic acid (DHA), essential fatty acids (EFAs), and half-essential fatty acids (HEFAs) in bighead carp were significantly lower than those in paddlefish (P < 0.01). In addition, bighead carp possessed significantly lower muscle \sum n-6 PUFAs/\sum n-3 PUFAs content than paddlefish did (P < 0.05). Muscle DHA content of bighead carp was higher than that of paddlefish (P < 0.05).

Dichelyne minutus (Rudolphi, 1819) is a typical and widespread parasite of Gobiidae. In this research, histopathological changes in the intestinal wall of Neogobius bathybius (Kessler) (Actinopterygii: Gobiidae) due to infection caused by D. minutus were studied. The most heavily parasitized regions were excised for microscopic studies. Cross sections revealed different aspects of tissue defensive reactions due to the free movement of nematodes among the gut contents. Mucosal erosion, increased number of goblet cells, hyperplastic changes in the epithelial cells, and remarkable hyperplasia that formed nodule-like structures with hyperemia were observed in the submucosa. The present study deals with the first records of Laubieriellus salzi and Spiophanes afer in the Sea of Marmara. They were collected from Mytilus galloprovincialis, Zostera marina, sand, and shell fragments substrate at depths ranging from 0.2 to 5 m in November 2010. This study gives more information regarding the morphological and distributional features of these species.

Soil Rotifers New To Hungary From The Gemenc Floodplain (Duna-Dráva National Park, Hungary), Károly Schöll, Miloslav Devetter

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In summer and autumn 2010, we collected soil samples from the Gemenc floodplain of the Danube (Duna-Dráva National Park) from places with different flood regimes and vegetation cover and examined them for rotifers. We found a total of 31 species; 14 of them are new to the Hungarian fauna. The Hungarian occurrence of 8 further species is confirmed based on their first detailed data from the country. The genus Wierzejskiella Wiszniewski, 1934 is also new for Hungary. This study provides additional support to the conclusion that floodplains of large rivers have a diverse and sensitive biota.

Six species of Erythmelus Enock in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China, are reviewed, and an illustrated key to females is provided. One new species, E. (Erythmelus) quasipicinus Hu & Triapitsyn sp. nov., is described. Erythmelus wenquanensis Li, Lin & Hu, syn. nov., and E. brevifuniculatus Li, Lin & Hu, syn. nov., are synonymized under E. (Erythmelus) flavovarius (Walker) and E. (Erythmelus) israeliensis Viggiani & Jesu, respectively. New extralimital records are given for some of the species.

New Records And Distributional Data On Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) From Turkey, Gamze Pekbey, Rüstem Hayat

Sixteen species belonging to subgenus Heteronychia Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889 of Sarcophaga Meigen, 1826 were recorded from the Bayburt, Erzincan, and Erzurum provinces of Turkey during 2008-2010. Five of these species, Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) armeniaca (Rohdendorf, 1937), S. (H.) bulgarica (Enderlein, 1936), S. (H.) clarahenae (Lehrer, 1999), S. (H.) monspellensia Böttcher, 1913, and S. (H.) recta (Rohdendorf, 1937) represent new records for the Turkish fauna. With these new records, the number of species belonging to subgenus Heteronychia known from Turkey has been increased from 19 to 24.

We performed this study on the subterranean mole rat Nannospalax xanthodon (Nehring, 1898) in western Turkey and we analyzed karyotypes of 121 specimens from 54 localities. We used 33 blind mole rats belonging to 10 different chromosomal races from 10 localities in western Turkey. We applied G- and C-banding techniques to compare chromosomal races as well as clarifying relationships between them. We discussed cytogenetic similarities and differences between chromosomal races. We concluded that 2n = 60C is the ancestor of the other chromosomal races. However, as a result of ongoing evolution processes 2n = 38 and 2n = 60K have become ancestors to chromosomal races on their peripherals. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, As) in feather samples of raptors of 3 families were determined from southern, central, and northern parts of Punjab Province. Deposition of metals significantly varied among the families for Cd, Zn, Ni, and Pb; further, these 4 metals also significantly differed between Accipitridae and Falconidae, and between Falconidae and Strigidae. Similarly, Cd, Ni, and As were significantly different among southern, central, and northern Punjab. This study was carried out in order to determine the species of the subfamilies Homolobinae, Macrocentrinae, Meteorinae, and Orgilinae in southeastern Anatolia, Turkey. Malaise and light traps and sweeping nets were used to obtain adult specimens from various habitats in the study area during 2010 and 2011. The ubiquitin ribosome fusion gene RpS27a's coding sequence was cloned from diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). An open reading frame of 468 bp was found to encode a putative 155 amino acid precursor protein, which shares over 90% similarity with other insects' RpS27a protein. Real-time quantitative PCR was carried out to determine the relative expression level in the fourth instar larvae of deltamethrin-resistant and deltamethrin-susceptible strains. The results showed that the expression of RpS27a was significantly higher in the deltamethrin-resistant strain than in the deltamethrin-susceptible strain. New Records Of Miltogramminae And Paramacronychiinae (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) From Turkey, Gamze Pekbey, Rüstem Hayat

This study was conducted in the Bayburt, Erzincan, and Erzurum provinces of Turkey during 2009 and 2010. A total of 10 species in 6 genera from the subfamilies Miltogramminae (4 species in 2 genera) and Paramacronychiinae (6 species in 4 genera) were determined. The genera Angiometopa Brauer and Bergenstamm, 1889 and Brachicoma Rondani, 1856 and the species Angiometopa falleni Pape, 1986, Brachicoma devia (Fallén, 1820), Macronychia polyodon (Meigen, 1824), and M. striginervis (Zetterstedt, 1838) are recorded for the first time from Turkey. Photographs or illustrations of the new records are provided.

The ichthyofaunal diversity of the Karala River and its adjoining areas in the Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal was studied from February 2009 to September 2010. A total of 3 identified species of freshwater spiny eels belonging to the order Synbranchiformes were recorded from a total of 55 captured species.
