A checklist of metazoon parasites of Anura and Urodela in Turkey has been compiled from parasitological studies done in Turkey between 1960 and 2013. The list of parasite species is arranged by phylum and class, providing parasite name, location of the caught Anura and Urodela hosts, and date of published record. Seventy parasite species belonging to phylum Platyhelminthes (including 7 species of Monogenea, 24 species of Digenea, and 2 species of Cestoda), phylum Nemathelminthes (including 30 species of Nematoda), phylum Acanthocephala (6 species), and phylum Annelida (1 species) are listed from 24 host species, which were collected from different parts …

New Distributional Data For The Genera Empis Linnaeus And Rhamphomyia Meigen (Diptera: Empididae) In The Marmara Region With New Records From Turkey, Mustafa Cemal Çi̇ftçi̇, Abdullah Hasbenli̇

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study is based on Empis and Rhamphomyia (Diptera: Empididae) specimens collected from the Marmara Region between the years 2008 and 2010. Out of a total of 28 species that were found in this study, 14 species are new records for the Turkish fauna. Distributions of these species in Turkey have been mapped, and the Palaearctic distributions were given. Geographic distributions of all species are further discussed.

Migration of susceptible individuals from untreated areas to populations that have developed insecticide resistance is one of the most important processes that can significantly delay or even prevent the development of resistance against insecticides. Fitness parameters of susceptible and resistant insect populations and changes in fitness following susceptible population migration have a crucial place in this process, as they determine the permanence and spread of susceptible alleles in the absence of insecticides. This study is based upon material of the family Dermestidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 1965 and 2012. The study resulted in the recording for the Turkish fauna of 28 species of 6 genera belonging to 3 subfamilies (Attageninae, Dermestinae, Megatominae) within the family Dermestidae. Among them, Attagenus unicolor unicolor (Brahm, 1791), Anthrenus scrophulariae scrophulariae (Linnaeus, 1758), and Anthrenus goliath Saulcy in Mulsant & Rey, 1868 have been found to be the most abundant and widespread species. Fatty acid profiles of total, neutral, and polar lipids in the liver, muscle, and intestine of female individuals of Vimba vimba (L., 1758) were determined by gas chromatography. C16:0, C16:1 n-7, C18:1 n-7, and C18:1 n-9 were the most abundant fatty acids in total and neutral lipids in all tissues investigated. In addition to these acids, C20:4 n-6 (arachidonic acid) and C22:6 n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid) were the other fatty acids having high percentages in the polar lipid fraction of the tissues. In this paper we summarize the knowledge on earthworm diversity in the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina Mountains) based on new findings and published data in order to establish the first list of known earthworm taxa from the entire area of the Balkan Mountains. During investigations in the western part of the Balkan Mountains (western Stara Planina Mountains), 24 earthworm species were recorded altogether. Little is known about the merogony of coccidians from fishes in Africa. To our knowledge, including both freshwater and marine fishes, developmental stages have been recorded for only Goussia cichlidarum, Cryptosporidium sp. parasitizing the stomachs of juvenile cichlid fish, and Eimeria (s. l.) vanasi. A survey of coccidians parasitizing marine fishes from the coast of Senegal (West Africa) was done between 1988 and 1992 and samples of infected organs were collected for further transmission electron microscopy observations. Tree cavities are a globally important structural element of forest ecosystems that host numerous cavity-dwelling vertebrates, but they have received little research in Pakistan. We investigated cavity-bearing trees, the attributes of their cavities, and their associated vertebrate fauna in a coniferous forest of Pakistan. We recorded 1140 trees in a 2-km^2 sampled area. We found 211 cavities (64% decay-formed and 36% excavated cavities) in 83 trees (41% live and 59% snags). Of the cavities found, 74% were recorded in trunks and 26% were in branches. Only 28% of the cavities showed signs of recent use by any vertebrate species. We …

The morphology of the postembryonic stages of a new quill mite species, Chenophila platyrhynchos sp. nov., parasitising the Mallard Anas platyrhynchos (Linnaeus) (Aves: Anseriformes) in Poland is described in detail. This species is morphologically very similar to Ch. kanduli Bochkov known from Anas querquedula Linnaeus in Russia and differs from it by the ornament of a propodonotal shield, the number of chambers in the lateral branch of the peritremes, and the lengths of the propodonotal setae.

During extensive fieldwork surveys from August 2009 to September 2011, 60 specimens of Mesalina watsonana were collected from 10 localities representing 3 population groups in Iran. Owing to clear sexual dimorphism, a total of 39 males were selected and examined for various meristic and morphological characters. Statistical analyses (multivariate analyses such as principal component analysis, canonical variate analysis, and cluster analysis) were used to compare morphological variations among specimens from these 3 population groups in Iran. Some Rajiformes species among the cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes) that are distributed on the west coast of the Gulf of İskenderun were seasonally obtained by bottom trawling from 2 different depth layers between the years 2004 and 2011. Cytogenetic characteristics of Devario aequipinnatus (McClelland, 1839) and Devario yuensis (Arunkumar and Tombi, 1998) from northeast India were studied by examining metaphase chromosome spreads from gill, epithelial, and kidney cells. A total of 691 specimens (114 males, 538 females, and 39 immature specimens) were collected from Bushehr coastal waters of the Persian Gulf from February 2007 to February 2008 to study the reproduction of this species along with its histological gonadal development. Mean absolute and relative fecundity was 263,162 ± 31,046 and 273 ± 27, respectively. The oogonia and oocyte diameter ranged between 6 µm and 875 µm with a mean of 318 µm. Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) and American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) are primarily sitand-wait predators that rely on perches to forage most efficiently. Overwintering Red-tailed Hawks and American Kestrels use available perches (e.g., utility poles and wires, trees, fences, gates, etc.) to hunt for prey items in agricultural fields in northeast Arkansas. Observations were made from December 2011-March 2012 and November 2012-March 2013 in three representative cover-types (short rice stubble, soybean stubble, and fallow areas including roadsides) to determine which perch-types were used by Red-tailed Hawks and American Kestrels. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has introduced Florida largemouth bass (FLMB; Micropterus salmoides floridanus) to water bodies historically containing the northern largemouth bass (NLMB; Micropterus salmoides salmoides) subspecies since the late 1970s in an attempt to produce a trophy LMB fishery. Since 2006, the AGFC has been biannually sampling reservoirs stocked with FLMB to determine levels of admixture. Here, total sampling efforts between 2006 and 2011 have been combined, and LMB heavier than 2,268 g (5 lb) were analyzed in an effort to investigate distribution of bass by their genetic composition designated as trophy LMB by the AGFC. …

The communities of small mammals were evaluated for 13 months with capture-mark-recapture methods in two Spartina-Juncus marshes of the Atlantic coast in Northampton County, Virginia. Small mammals were trapped for three days each month using live traps placed on floats on two study grids. Two rodents were numerically dominant (~90% of small mammals) there: marsh rice rat, Oryzomys palustris, and meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus. Monthly estimates of population density were greater for rice rats (peak: 45/ha) than for those of meadow voles (peak: 30/ha). Survival rates were generally low, especially for rice rats, indicating highly vagile populations. Both …

Parascaris equorum is a nematode parasite that infects young horses, sometimes causing unthriftiness, respiratory signs, or intestinal impaction in severe cases. Infection can be diagnosed by detection of eggs in feces, but this is only possible after the worms are fully mature. The goal of this study was to develop an antibody-based test for prepatent diagnosis of P. equorum infection. To produce western blot (WB) antigen, P. equorum larvae were cultured for collection of excretory-secretory antigens (ESA). Small mammals were surveyed using live and pitfall traps between the primary and secondary dunes at two locations on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay near the Atlantic Ocean: Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk and Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Captures were dominated by house mice (Mus musculus) in interdunal habitats with sparse grass, whereas white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were found primarily in shrubby live-oak thickets on the tops of dunes. Spea is a genus of toad-like, arid adapted frogs distributed throughout much of the western U.S. and northern Mexico. Two species, (S. Bombifrons and S. Multiplicata) are syntopic throughout most of the northern Chihuahuan Desert, a region that is experiencing rapid urbanization. For this study, I examined 936 male advertisement calls from urban and rural populations of S. multiplicata, and a rural population of S. bombifrons in west Texas and south-central New Mexico. Two species of the family Coniopterygidae, Coniopteryx (Xeroconiopteryx) loipetsederi H. Aspöck, 1963 and C. (Coniopteryx) borealis Tjeder, 1931, are here recorded for the first time in the Turkish fauna. Morphological and ecological notes as well as the distribution map with new recording sites are also provided. For C. loipetsederi, this is the most eastern record, and the eastern limits of the range of C. borealis have also been extended.

Distribution of crustaceans in 3 transects (including depths of 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 200 m) of oligotrophic soft bottoms of the Levantine Sea shelf located near Kumkuyu, Limonlu, and Erdemli was studied in 2000 to show its association with depth-dependent environmental parameters in representative months of each season (winter, spring, summer, and autumn). The seasonal changes of diet in the guts of 298 vimbas (Vimba vimba L.) caught on a monthly basis in Lake Sapanca from August 2003 to July 2004 were analyzed. V. vimba fed on ostracods, gastropods, Dreissena polymorpha (mollusks), fish larvae, macrophytes, oligochaetes, chironomids, phytoplankton, and detritus. The gut fullness index (GFI) indicated that vimbas increased their feeding activity in summer and decreased it in winter. The correlation between GFI and temperature was significant (0.839, P < 0.01). The water temperature shift was one of the critical environmental factors affecting the feeding of vimbas in Lake Sapanca. The lowest similarity of diet composition was between the juvenile vimbas in autumn and the adult vimbas in spring (cluster analysis), while the highest similarity of diet composition was between adult individuals in autumn and winter (cluster analysis). In both size groups and in all seasons, the main food items were macrophytes, D. polymorpha, and phytoplankton (particularly bacillariophytes). Of animal food items, adult individuals fed mostly on D. polymorpha, while ostracods were consumed only by juvenile fish in spring, summer, and autumn. The benthic-omnivorous strategy of vimba is demonstrated by the high abundance of plant foods in their guts, confirming this mixed type of diet.

Several specimens of the tropical schizomid Stenochrus portoricensis Chamberlin, 1922 (family Hubbardiidae) were found in the Poznan Palm House, representing the first record of micro-whip scorpions (Schizomida) from Poland. Stenochrus portoricensis is an alien species in temperate climates, and has been accidentally introduced to greenhouses via potted plants. Its parthenogenetic lifestyle allows for the easy transfer of populations to new locations and the successful founding of new colonies. Due to a lack of adequate taxonomic information on Acropora Oken, 1815 species in the Persian Gulf, especially those inhabiting the coasts of the northern and northeastern areas, an appraisal of the diversity of this genus required comprehensive and careful examination of a large number of specimens.
