New Locality Records Of The Snake-Eyed Lizard, Ophisops Elegans Ménétriés, 1832 (Squamata: Lacertidae), In The Western Black Sea Region Of Anatolia, Mehmet Zülfü Yildiz, Bahadir Akman, Bayram Göçmen

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We report 18 specimens of Ophisops elegans from Kastamonu and Sinop provinces in the western Black Sea region of Anatolia. Previously, the northernmost known locality for O. elegans in Anatolia was Sinop Province. These new records extend the known distribution area of the species and fill the gaps in the distribution range of the species in the Black Sea region. The specimens were compared with the geographically closest subspecies, O. e. centralanatoliae from Ulukışla, Niğde. On the basis of pholidosis, coloration, and pattern, the new specimens can be included in the subspecies O. e. centralanatoliae.

A Preliminary Study On The Length-Weight Relationship Of Sacura Boulengeri (Heemstra, 1973) From Indian Waters, Kinattumkara Bineesh, Sebastine Manju, Kallivalappil Akhilesh, Gopalakrishna Pillai

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Sacura boulengeri (Heemstra, 1973) is a rare serranid fish (Subfamily: Anthiinae) having very disjunct distribution in the western Indian Ocean. The rarity of the species is evident from earlier reports and, so far, no related studies on the species have been published except on taxonomy and distributional records. In the present investigation, the length-weight relationship of Sacura boulengeri was estimated to be W = 0.0777 × L2.690 (with 95% confidence intervals for b and r2). An analysis of the stomach contents revealed that sergestid shrimps and copepods were the major food items of the diet.

Genetic data from populations are currently being used in order to assess the conservation status of various species. In this study, the conservation implications of the genetic structure of 3 cave-dwelling bat species in southeastern Europe and Anatolia are discussed. These species are the greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), the bent-winged bat (Miniopterus schreibersii), and the long-fingered bat (Myotis capaccinii). The conservation status of the species is evaluated using 3 conservation unit approaches, specifically evolutionarily significant unit and management unit definitions and population aggregation analysis. A revision was carried out on 245 adult skull specimens of the common vole (Microtus arvalis sensu lato) kept in the mammal collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest. A highly effective craniometric classification function was used to reveal whether they belonged to the common vole (M. arvalis Pallas, 1778 sensu stricto) or to the East European vole (Microtus levis Miller, 1908). A total of 97 species of macromolluscs were collected from 4 rocky beaches (Manora, Buleji, Nathiagali, and Cape Monze) along the Karachi coast from December 1993 to December 1995. More species were recorded from Buleji (68) and Manora (63) than from Nathiagali (55) and Cape Monze (57). Gastropods dominated at all 4 of the sites studied. Four species were commonly abundant at all 4 sites: Turbo coronatus, Nerita albicilla, Morula granulata, and Cerithium rubus. The Land Snail Fauna Of Mut District (Mersin Province, Turkey), Ümi̇t Kebapçi, Mehmet Zeki̇ Yildirim, İskender Gülle, Mustafa Öztop, Duygu Ceren Çağlan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The land snail fauna of the Mut District was surveyed during the spring (April-May) of 2008. A total of 31 species and subspecies-9 (29%) of them endemics-belonging to 26 genera and 14 families were determined from 41 localities. Dominant families were Enidae, Orculidae, and Hygromiidae. Humidity, vegetation, and habitat type were the determinants of species richness in the study area. Species composition, according to cluster and multivariate analyses, was also found to be affected by the altitude factor.

The work reported here analyzes the effects of temperature on host consumption and preference of eastern pine processionary caterpillar Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae). Nest censuses were taken in the field and food choice tests were conducted in the laboratory. Two pine species (Pinus nigra and P. brutia) were considered. Caterpillars hatched on both pine species were collected and included in experiments that were conducted under 4 different temperature regimes (15, 20, 25, and 30 °C). Insects are natural food for many vertebrates. Being nutritionally rich, acridids can be used to produce high quality feed for livestock industries. For a sustainable supply for the feed manufacturing companies, a huge acridid biomass must be obtained on a regular basis. Therefore, for successful acridid farming, a laboratory rearing system in semi-controlled conditions is proposed to produce a huge acridid biomass. Experiments were conducted to determine a favorable temperature and photoperiod for rearing the chosen multivoltine species, i.e. Oxya hyla hyla. In the present study the zooplankton fauna of Lake İznik (Bursa) was investigated during January-December 2006. A total of 54 taxa-35 taxa from rotifers, 14 taxa from cladocerans, and 5 taxa from copepods-were identified in Lake İznik. Data on deep sea leptostracans (Crustacea: Phyllocarida: Leptostraca) are still scarce in many parts of the world. In the last few years, several species of Nebalia Leach, 1814, have been reported from the eastern Mediterranean; however, there have been no reports from waters deeper than 100 m. Samples collected recently from Gökçeada, Turkey-at depths of 680-820 m in the Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean-included Nebalia abyssicola Fage, 1929. This study is based upon material of the family Vespidae collected at a series of localities in Turkey between 1964 and 2010 and a review of the previous studies on the Vespidae of Turkey. Stenodynerus trotzinai (Morawitz, 1895) and Antepipona dentella Gusenleitner, 1991 are new records for the Turkish fauna. Four species of water mites (Acari: Hydrachnidia) are presented for the fauna of Turkey. Oxus (s. str.)angustipositus Viets, 1908; O. (s. str.) hastatus (Lundblad, 1954); Frontipodopsis (s. str.) reticulatifrons Szalay, 1945; and Hungarohydracarus subterraneus Szalay, 1943 are new records for the Turkish fauna. The description of the male O. (s. str.) hastatus, a species known for a single female specimen from Portugal, is given for the first time. Frontipodopsidae and Hungarohydracaridae are reported for the first time for Turkey.

Within the wide distribution of spirlin in Iran, populations of this species inhabit a great variety of habitats, including qanats. We hypothesized that qanats may contribute to habitat-specific variation in the life history of the fish. To test this, a total of 240 specimens of Alburnoides bipunctatus, caught in the qanat of Uzineh (northern Iran) from October 2007 to August 2008, were examined for life history attributes. The present study was conducted to identify the parasitic infection of the nemacheilid loach, Turcinoemacheilus kosswigi, in 5 rivers of the Tigris basin in Iran, from July 2007 to August 2008. Extracted from 43 fish specimens were 3 parasitic species: metacercaria of Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Digenea: Diplostomatidae) in the skin, fins, gills, and muscles; Allocreadium sp. (Digenea: Allocreadidae) and Procamallanus sp. (Nematoda: Camallanidae) in the intestine. A total of 8 specimens of Rana tavasensis Baran & Atatür, 1986 (Tavas frog) were collected in Denizli Province (inner-west Anatolia, or the eastern part of the Aegean region), Turkey, in 2008 and 2009 and were examined for the first time for helminths. All 8 frogs were infected with 1 or more helminths. Investigation Of Acute Toxicity Of Cadmium-Arsenic Mixtures To Daphnia Magna With Toxic Units Approach, Şeyda Fi̇ki̇rdeşi̇ci̇, Ahmet Altindağ, Ebru Özdemi̇r

The acute toxicities of cadmium chloride (CdCl_2.H_2O), arsenic trioxide (AS_2O_3), and their mixtures to Daphnia magna were investigated by employing the statistical method of aquatic toxicity. The data obtained were statistically evaluated with probit analysis method (SPSS 17.0). The 24 h LC_{50} of Cd and As to Daphnia magna was estimated to be 44 µg L^{-1} for Cd, and 509 µg L^{-1} for As, respectively. With Behrens-Karber method the 24 h LC_{50} of these metals was found to be 46 µg L^{-1} and 509 µg L^{-1}, respectively. The 2 methods were in good agreement. The results suggested that D. magna …

A New Freshwater Amphipod Species, Gammarus Obruki Sp. Nov., From Turkey (Amphipoda: Gammaridae), Murat Özbek

A new species of freshwater amphipod, Gammarus obruki sp. nov., collected from İnderesi Cave, Bartın Province, Turkey, is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the Gammarus pulex group. The most discriminant characters of this species are the presence of prolonged extremities, a very long antenna 1 (up to 52 segmented flagellum), densely setose fifth peduncle and flagellar segments of antenna 2, and a fourth peduncle segment that has no long setae. A detailed morphological description and illustrations of the new species are provided and differences from related species are discussed.

The scorpion Mesobuthus vesiculatus (Pocock, 1899) was briefly described from northwestern Iran based on only one male with a picture indicating the dorsal habitus of the holotype; the author pointed out that it has a large and globular telson with a short aculeus. In a book chapter containing the first checklist and distribution of Turkish rotifers, published in 1999, were listed 167 taxa. The second checklist, published in 2004, reported 229 rotifer taxa in Turkey. During the 7 years since this checklist process, many studies have been carried out and we have prepared a new checklist of Turkish rotifers in the present study. In all, 341 rotifer taxa have been recorded to date.

Coccoidea species on pine trees (Pinus brutia, P. halepensis, and P. pinea) were collected from natural pine forests, mainly in the Aegean, Mediterranean, and some neighboring (Central Anatolian, Marmara) regions of Turkey in 2008-2011. In this study, 1210 adult specimens of the infraorder Gerromorpha (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) were collected from 47 different localities in eastern Anatolia, the Black Sea region, Kelkit Valley, and Hatay from 2006 to 2010, and the unpublished materials studied were collected from different parts of Turkey by Seidenstücker, Wellschmied, Demel, and Heinzl, and deposited in the Zoologische Staatssammlung München. Neoergasilus japonicus (Harada, 1930), a parasitic copepod from the family Ergasilidae (Copepoda, Poecilostomatoida), was observed for the first time in Turkey during a parasitological examination of rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus from Lake Sapanca. The investigation was performed between March 2009 and February 2010, and a total of 132 S. erythrophthalmus were studied at monthly intervals. N. japonicus infection was found from June to November, and during this period the monthly prevalences were 18.2%, 75.0%, 53.8%, 61.5%, 38.5%, and 33.3%, respectively. Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are considered serious agricultural pests in Pakistan. Their stomach contents were examined (n = 63) in central Punjab, Pakistan, and it was found that 32 types of food items were consumed. Triticum aestivum, Saccharum officinarum, Zea mays, Oryza sativa, Prosopis juliflora, and earthworms were the main staples. The major components of the diet of wild boar in central Punjab originated from 58% cultivated crops, 30% uncultivated crops, 9% animal matter, and 3% unidentified matter. Three new species from the Marmara region of Turkey are described: Hilara sakaryensis sp. nov. (Hilara abdominalis-group), Hilara truva sp. nov. (Hilara canescens-group), and Hilara balikesirensis sp. nov. (Hilara intermedia-group). Males and females are described and compared with related species, and male genitalia and forelegs are illustrated. The systematic position of the new species within the species groups is discussed, and a key to the Turkish species of Hilara Meigen is given.

The ultrastructural pathological changes in the renal haemopoietic tissue of Channa punctatus (Bloch) experimentally infected with 2 species of aeromonads, Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas salmonicida, were reported. Adult C. punctatus specimens were injected intramuscularly, once at a time, with a chosen sublethal dose (2 × 10^9 cfu mL^-^1) of aeromonads at 5 µL g^-^1 body weight of fish and were exposed to 72 h of duration. In this study, the morphology and development of the female reproductive system in Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823) were investigated. The trilobed ovary with 2 anterior lobules and only 1 posterior lobule lie dorsally to the gut on the large hepatopancreas. The oviduct extends laterally from the middle part of the ovary and its innermost layer produces 2 different types of secretion. Weight-length relationships (WLRs) for 28 fish species were investigated in an enclosed basin in the Sea of Marmara. Due to low sample sizes ( 0.05). In this study, WLRs for Pomatoschistus marmoratus are presented for the first time in Turkish waters. Additionally, this study represents the first results for the entire Sea of Marmara and carries significant importance for the WLR database in light of previous studies, which only provided information for limited parts of this sea.
