Cellular and subcellular mechanisms involved in tissue responses to larval and adult lungworms (Protostrongylidae) were respectively explored through experimental and natural infections in molluscan intermediate (Xeropicta candacharica) and ruminant definitive hosts (Ovis aries). Reaction to developing larval stages in the gastropod is manifested as cellular infiltration involving lymphocytes and macrophages into the infected tissue, which restricts damage and may result in destruction and elimination of parasites from the intermediate host. Variations in the patterns of localization for infective third-stage larvae in the foot tissue of the intermediate host are described. Reproductive Performance Of Turbot (Psetta Maxima) In The Southeastern Black Sea, İlhan Aydin, Temel Şahi̇n

Spawning time, total fecundity, fertilization, and hatching rates of turbot (Psetta maxima) were investigated in 10 wild female broodstock (mean wt: 3809.7 ± 1238.4 g). Spawning lasted 37 days, from April 17 to May 23. Mean total fecundity was 2329 ± 1260 x 10^3 eggs per female. Fertilization and hatching rates were 30.6 ± 25.4% and 17.9 ± 16.1%, respectively. A significant positive correlation was observed between body weight and total fecundity (r = 0.637, P < 0.05). The timing and frequency of hand stripping, fecundity, fertilization, and hatching rates in turbot are presented.

In this study, some blood parameters were studied in 7 distinct snake species (Dolichophis caspius, Eirenis modestus, Malpolon monspessulanus, Natrix natrix, Platyceps rubriceps, Telescopus fallax, and Typhlops vermicularis) of the families Colubridae and Typhlopidae, collected from various regions of Turkey. A total of 7 hematologic parameters, namely red blood cell count (RBC), white blood cell count (WBC), hematocrit value (HCT), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), were examined. Histomorphological study of the larval (final instar) osmeterium gland in Graphium agamemnon agamemnon Linnaeus shows that each fully protruded Y-shaped osmeterium is composed of 2 elongated hollow tubular arms, which arise from a basal peduncle. The surface of the osmeterium has irregular folds, and papillae arise from some cells. There is an oval opening (gland pore, structurally less complicated than in other evolved species) in the proximal second seventh of the segment on each tubular arm on its posterior face. In this study, 29 reptile and amphibian species were recorded in 25 different localities in the Sultan Mountains. Of these, 5 were anurans, 1 was a tortoise, 1 was a turtle, 11 were lizards, and 11 were snakes. A chorotype classification of the species recorded in the Sultan Mountains is also given.

During studies on the Braconidae fauna of the Black Sea, Central Anatolian and Eastern Anatolian regions of Turkey 2 new species, Bracon (Lucobracon) kuzguni sp. n. and Bracon (Lucobracon) breviradius sp. n., were recorded and described. Important morphological diagnostic characters are figured and they are compared with the related species, B.(L.) triangularis Nees, 1834 and B. (L.) brachycerus Thomson, 1892 respectively.

The present study describes breeding and wintering abundances, distributions, and seasonal occurrences of shorebirds (waders) in the Gediz Delta (İzmir-Turkey). Breeding abundance and distribution, and wintering abundance data were collected by carrying out breeding bird surveys in 2002 and 2006, and waterbird censuses between 1990 and 2007, respectively. Seasonal occurrences were determined using 432 different observations corresponding to 5043 different records between 1990 and 2007. Thirty-eight wader species were observed with a weekly average of 22.5 ± 4.0. Breeding evidence was obtained for 9 species in 2002 and 8 species in 2006. The Scleractinian Cladocora caespitosa is reported for the first time from the Marmara Sea, Turkey. Five colonies of the elliptical Cladocora caespitosa were discovered at 7 m by scuba divers around Posidonia oceanica beds colonising a substrate of sand and rock. The colonies' characteristics were recorded with underwater apparatus with a close-up device and with a video system. The present paper provides the new updated area of the species on the Turkish coast.

Haemopoietic tissues of the head kidney of Clarias batrachus were studied for morphometric analysis and ultrastructural descriptions of the erythropoietic and leucopoietic cell populations. Eight successive steps of developing erythrocytes from small lymphoid haemoblasts (SLHs) to mature erythrocytes (MEs) were distinguished. Progressive loss of RNA and synthesis of haemoglobin during haemopoiesis were coupled with denser nucleus and changes in cellular shapes. Transmission electron microscopy aided in clear distinction between cell lineages in the development of erythrocytes, granulocytes, and lymphocytes. The black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus Baird and Girard, 1853) is a wide-ranging species complex with representatives from the southwestern United States through the highlands of central and southern Mexico. The systematics of this group has received little attention and in the past six decades only two taxonomic revisions have been proposed (the transfer of C. basiliscus oaxacus to C. molossus and the elevation of C. m. estebanensis to full species). Many arthropods possess filiform hair sensilla (termed trichobothria in arachnids), which are extremely sensitive detectors of medium particle displacement. Electrophysiological evidence in some taxa suggests that these sensilla can detect air particle displacements resulting from intraspecific communication signals. Individualized markers that allow organisms to be identified without recapture are invaluable for studies of survival, movement, and behavior. Nape tags consisting of brass safety pins with unique combinations of two or three colored plastic beads were used to mark 5,868 American Coot (Fulica americana) chicks and 331 Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis), 157 King Eider (Somateria spectabilis) and 664 White-winged Scoter (Melanitta fusca deglandi) ducklings. Declines in hunter recruitment coupled with dramatic growth in numbers of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have challenged our ability to manage deer populations through regulated hunting. We review the efficacy of current regulated hunting methods and explain how they are unable to reduce deer numbers sufficiently in some environments. Regulated commercial harvest would provide an additional tool to help state wildlife agencies manage overabundant populations of white-tailed deer. A cluster of morphologically similar frogs of the genus Leptodactylus having a pair of distinct dorsolateral folds on the dorsum and well-developed lateral fringes on the toes has never been systematically evaluated by examining materials from throughout its geographic range. The species involved are herein referred to as members of the Leptodactylus bolivianus complex. There have been three names proposed for members of this complex: Leptodactylus bolivianus Boulenger, 1898; Leptodactylus insularum Barbour, 1906; and Leptodactylus romani Melin, 1941. Freshwater fish, Oreochromis niloticus, were individually exposed to 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 µg/mL of Cu^{2+}, Cd^{2+}, Cr^{6+}, Ag^+, and Zn^{2+} for 96 h (acute) and 0.05 µg/mL concentrations of the same metals for 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 days (chronic). Following each period, metal accumulation and ion levels (Na^+, K^+, Ca^{+2}, and Mg^{+2}) were measured in the gills, kidneys, and muscles. Except for Ag^+, none of the metals killed the fish within 30 days. Silver killed all the fish within 16 days. A new species of the Australian genus Westralianus Boucek (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Torymidae) is described from Altınözü, Hatay, Turkey. Some new diagnostic characters of the genus are provided by inclusion of a second species in the genus. The new species, W. altinoezus n.sp., is compared with the type species, W. microstigma Boucek 1988. The new species was recorded as a parasitoid of caterpillars of an unknown species of Lepidoptera living in galls of Gymnosporangium confusum (Uredinales: Pucciniaceae) on shoots of Crataegus monogyna Jacq. A description of the new species is provided and its diagnostic characters are photographed.

Bark Beetle Fauna (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) Of The Coniferous Forests In The Mediterranean Region Of Western Turkey, With A New Record For Turkish Fauna, Oğuzhan Sarikaya, Mustafa Avci

Scolytinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) species and their host plants of coniferous forests of the Mediterranean region of Western Turkey were determined between 2006 and 2008. A total of 27 species of Scolytinae were collected from 59 different sites in Afyonkarahisar, Antalya, Burdur, Denizli, Isparta, and Muğla provinces. Hylastes angustatus (Herbst), H. linearis Erichson, Tomicus destruens (Wollaston), Hylurgus ligniperda (Fabricius), Pityogenes calcaratus (Eichhoff), P. pennidens Reitter, Orthotomicus robustus (Knotek), and O. suturalis (Gyllenhal) were recorded as new species for the Scolytinae fauna of the Mediterranean region of Western Turkey. Orthotomicus robustus (Knotek) was recorded for the first time from Turkey.

Lecanid Rotifers (Rotifera: Monogononta: Lecanidae) From Iran, Esmat Khaleqsefat, Shahrokh Pashaei Rad, Reza Malekzadeh Viayeh

Rotifer diversity was investigated in 26 bodies of water in northwest Iran. Thirteen species of Lecanidae were identified, 6 of which are new records for Iran. The new records include Lecane flexilis (Gosse 1886), L. hamata (Stokes 1896), L. hastata (Murray 1913), L. lamellata (Daday 1893), L. papuana (Murray 1913), and L. punctata (Murray 1913). Drawings are provided, and both the seasonal and spatial distributions of the identified taxa are discussed. A brief comparison is made between the present study's results and those reported from Turkey.

Based on the study of specimens from the type locality, Kervillea (Kervillea) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918 is restored as a valid species and a valid type species of the genus Kervillea Bergevin, 1918. Hysteropterum parvissimum Dlabola, 1957 is synonymized with K. (K.) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918. K. (K.) ancyrana Bergevin, 1918 and Kervillea (Kervillea) placophora (Horvath, 1905) are redescribed and figured based on the examination of the materials from Turkey.

Four oribatid mites new to the Turkish fauna, namely Licneremaeus licnophorus (Michael, 1882), Moritzoppia (Moritzoppia) tridentata (Forsslund, 1942), Lauroppia maritima acuminata (Strenzke, 1951), and Banksinoma lanceolata lanceolata (Michael, 1885), collected from Bolu province, Turkey, are given with their drawings and SEM photographs. On the basis of the collected samples, their morphological features and distributions in the world are also presented.

Three new species are described: Ophiomyia quadrispinosa sp. nov., Metopomyza lingulata sp. nov., and Pseudonapomyza multicostata sp. nov. Five species are recorded from Turkey for the first time: Melanagromyza provecta (de Meijere), Liriomyza lutea (Meigen), L. periorbita Hendel, Phytomyza veronicicola Hering, and P. wahlgreni Rydén. All species were collected from Elazığ and Malatya provinces in 2007 and 2008. The general distribution and a description of each species are presented.

Maximum Swimming Speed Predictions For Mullus Barbatus (Linnaeus, 1758) And Diplodus Annularis (Linnaeus, 1758), Hüseyi̇n Özbi̇lgi̇n, Murat Pehli̇van, Fati̇h Başaran

Maximum swimming speed of red mullet (Mullus barbatus) and annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis) was estimated based on muscle twitch experiments. The maximum estimated speed of red mullet (mean length: 16.9 cm) was 3.14 m/s (18.6 bl/s) at 26 °C. At 20 °C the maximum estimated speed of annular sea bream (mean length: 11.5 cm) was 1.92 m/s (16.7 bl/s). Maximum swimming speed of annular sea bream decreased as the temperature decreased.
