By the early 1900's, several large carnivores had been extirpated from Nebraska as a result of unrestricted hunting and trapping by early European settlers. Recently, there have been several confirmed records of carnivores that were once extirpated from Nebraska. In our study, we present new data for five species that recently were documented in Nebraska: Lynx canadensis, Ursus americanus, Canis lupus, Puma concolor, and Lontra canadensis. Restoration programs and legal protection afforded to these species in Nebraska and in adjacent states have allowed population numbers to increase. Because of the increase in populations of these …

Seventeen specimens of the rare Yucatán vesper mouse, Otonyctomys hatti, are now known from Belize, Guatemala, and the Mexican states of Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán. We herein report a second specimen of O. hatti, from Belize, extending the known geographic range of the species 95 km to the southeast in the country. This is the first location at which O. hatti has been taken sympatrically with the Central American vesper mouse, Nyctomys sumichrasti. Aphidophagus coccinellid (Coccinellidae: Coleoptera) species were determined in cultivated and uncultivated fields in Kahramanmaraş. Furthermore, aphid species preyed upon by each coccinellid species were also specified. Adult coccinellids observed feeding on the aphid species were collected by suction tube while immature stages were collected with their preys and cultivated in order to obtain adults. This study yielded 33 coccinellid species feeding upon 59 aphid species. Zooplankton Of Two Drinking Water Reservoirs In Central Anatolia: Composition And Seasonal Cycle, Ni̇lsun Demi̇r

Comparative studies were performed on the zooplankton composition and some physical and chemical properties of the Kurtboğazı and Çamlıdere reservoirs. Zooplankton abundance, conductivity, organic matter, hardness and orthophosphate concentrations were lower and Secchi depth was higher in Çamlıdere than in Kurtboğazı (P < 0.01). Rotifera species such as Polyarthra dolichoptera, Keratella quadrata, Asplanchna priodonta and Ascomorpha saltans showed peaks, particularly in spring, summer and late summer. Diaphanosoma lacustris, Bosmina longirostris and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula of Cladocera species increased in late summer whereas Bosmina longirostris and Daphnia spp. were prominent in spring. The cyclopoid copepod Cyclops vicinus was dominant in Kurtboğazı and calanoid Acanthodiaptomus denticornis in Çamlıdere.

The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature officially proposed the creation of the Rum Wildlife Reserve, in the extreme south of Jordan, in 1979. We present the first review of the birds of the proposed reserve and its environs, drawing upon published and unpublished records as well as a short field survey from June, 1996. A total of 142 species have been recorded, of which at least 34 species actually breed and another 14 probably do so. On the basis of the material collected and the observations made in the summer of 2003 in Turkey –mainly in eastern Anatolia– and some samples in the collection of Atatürk University, Entomology Museum, Erzurum, Turkey (EMET), an overview is given of the observed clearwing moths (Sesiidae) in Turkey from faunistic, distributional, and agro-economical points of view. Thirty-six species and subspecies in 11 genera have been recorded, of which Sesia pimplaeformis Oberthtür, Paranthrene diaphana Dalla Torre & Strand, Synanthedon andrenaeformis tenuicingulata ˘Spatenka and Pyropteron cirgisa (Bartel, 1912) are classified as endangered species and should be added to the red list. This study was conducted in Nallıhan Bird Paradise (Nallıhan, Ankara), which displays seasonal wetland characteristics. Within the scope of this study, a 12 month field study between August 2000 and July 2001 was carried out in order to determine the avifauna of Nallıhan Bird Paradise. One hundred and thirty bird species belonging to 14 orders and 41 families were recorded in the study area. It was concluded that this area was probably used by a total of 41 actual and/or possible bird species for breeding purposes.

A Representative Of The Pulchella Group Of Alona In Anatolia: Alona Cambouei Guerne & Richard, 1893 (Cladocera: Chydoridae), F. Banu Yalim, Battal Çiplak

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Alona cambouei of the pulchella group in Anatolia is considered in this study. A description of the species is supplemented with new data obtained from new specimens and necessary illustrations are provided. A. cambouei is diagnosed from other Alona species of Anatolia. Some conclusions are given about the distribution of the pulchella group and it is assumed that the group is Gondwana origin and Anatolia is the north-west end of the range of the group in Asia.

A New Microsporidian Parasite Record Of Phyllotreta Undulata (Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera), Mustafa Yaman, Renate Radek

A new microsporidian parasite of Phyllotreta undulata was recorded in Turkey. Fresh spores are oval, 3.85 ± 0.69 µm (2.0-4.75) in length and 2.04 ± 0.23 µm (1.90-2.40) in width (n = 50). The spores are uninucleated. As there were insufficient data available on the complete life cycle of the parasite, it could not be identified at species level.

This study was conducted to determine some biological characteristics of Calosoma sycophanta L. under laboratory conditions between 2001 and 2003 in Kahramanmaraş. The adult emergence period of C. sycophanta started at the end of February and extended until the first week of March (from soil). When they emerged, they fed on caterpillars of the pine processionary moth. After 1-1.5 weeks of feeding, adult beetles copulated and deposited their eggs into humid soil. Reptiles are long-lived, sedentary animals and therefore may be good biomonitors of their local habitat. Experiments were carried out to determine the effects of 2 agro-pesticides, cypermethrin and malathion, on the cholinesterase activity of Calotes versicolor Daudin. Two different concentrations, 0.1% and 1%, were used and cholinesterase activity was estimated in the liver and kidney. This decreased by up to 20% and 35% in the liver and 27% and 54% in the kidney under the effect of cypermethrin. The diet of the banded newt, Triturus vittatus ophryticus, from 3 different sites in northern Turkey was studied based on stomach contents from 180 samples (104 males + 76 females). The banded newt was found to forage on wide variety of prey organisms in the aquatic phase. Benthic invertebrates consistently made the greatest contribution to the diet, both numerically and volumetrically. Nektonic prey also appeared to be of importance in terms of volume but constituted few items. Terrestrial invertebrates contributed very little to the diet. Pigmentation Variation In The 14-Spot Ladybird Propylea Quatuordecimpunctata (Linnaeus, 1758) In The Edirne Populations, Turkey, Selçuk Yurtsever, Selda Korkmaz, Hasan Ardali

Frequency differences in the 2 different coloured forms of the 14-spot ladybird Propylea quatuordecimpunctata in the Edirne populations were investigated. The results indicated that black individuals tend to occur more frequently in the habitats than in shady habitats. The body length of the black coloured 14-spot ladybirds was significantly smaller than that of the yellow individuals. The pooled data consisted of 66 % black and 34 % yellow forms.

Field and laboratory investigations on the ecology, reproduction and behavior of Spermophilus citellus and Spermophilus xantophrymnus were performed over a period of 4 years. Both S. citellus and S. xanthophrymnus are diurnal species and occupy semiarid steppe areas in Turkish Thrace and Anatolia, respectively. Distribution of the former species is confined to restricted steppe areas in Turkish Thrace whilethe, latter lives on the Anatolian steppe, and is sympatric with Meriones tristami, Mesocricetus brandthi, Allactaga williamsi and Microtus spp. The burrows of both species have one entrance, and are built separately in the field. The specific composition of decapod crustaceans collected in the sublittoral depths (8-135 m) of Saros Bay (northeastern Aegean Sea) is presented. A total of 40 species (17 Natantia, 1 Macrura Reptantia, 8 Anomura and 14 Brachyura) were recorded. The dominant taxon is Natantia, represented by a total of 17 species and an occurrence frequency of 42%.

A total of 105 specimens of the genus Mus collected from Ankara, Bartın, Bolu, Düzce and Zonguldak in Turkey were biometrically evaluated. The isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme system along with karyotypes of 37 specimens were analysed. The zygomatic index and the index of head plus body length/tail length were diagnostic characters for Mus domesticus and Mus macedonicus. Starch gel electrophoresis gave 2 loci (Idh-1 and Idh-2) for the isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme system. Two newly recorded Enochrus Thomson, 1859 (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) species for the Turkish fauna, E. (E.) melanocephalus (Olivier, 1792) and E. (L.) fuscipennis (Thomson, 1884), are described, and their distribution in Turkey and worldwide is presented. A key to Turkish Enochrus species is provided and E. (L.) segmentinotatus treated under the "bicolor species complex".

This research was carried out to determine the crustacean species associated with Padina pavonia facies distributed in the upper-infralittoral zone of the Aegean Sea coasts of Turkey and their bioecological features. The investigations were performed at depths of 2-5 m in 13 different stations chosen in the Aegean Sea in June and July, 1995. As a result of the study, a total of 3279 specimens belonging to 85 species were identified. Of these, Ampithoe ramondi was commonest with a dominance value of 21.47%, followed by Elasmopus pocillimanus with 13.94% and Ericthonius brasiliensis with 4.61%.

Knipowitschia longicaudata is recorded for the first time from Lake Manyas. K. caucasica is known to live in Lake Manyas. Therefore, In order to determine whether the specimens of Knipowitchia collected from Lake Manyas were K. caucasica species or not, they were compared with K. caucasıca from Lake Eğirdir. The comparission of K. caucasica specimens from Lake Eğirdir with the specimens from Lake Manyas showed that those species were 2 distinct species of Knipowitchia. Observations On Some Behaviours Of Krüper’S Nuthatch (Sitta Krueperi), A Little-Known West Palaearctic Bird, Tamer Albayrak, Ali̇ Erdoğan

Some intraspecific and interspecific behaviours in Krüper's Nuthatch (Sitta krueperi) populations were observed in Antalya province, southern Turkey. An account of their endemic distribution in Anatolia on the one hand, and the lack of sufficient data on the other, gave rise to the need for such a study. The breeding behaviour in the populations is observed, particularly in the BÜK (Lütfi Büyük Yıldırım research forest) and ELMALI Cedar research forests. The results are given in 2 parts as observed behaviours throughout a year and breeding period, which are mating, nesting, brooding, parental care and rearing and territorial behaviours.

Larval development of Menaethiops bicornis Alcock, 1895 was carried out under laboratory conditions during 1996 from an ovigerous female to the second zoeal stage at room temperature, 27- 29 °C, with a salinity of seawater at 35-37 ‰ and pH 7.9. The larvae are illustrated, described and also compared with the laboratory reared larvae of M. nodulosus described by Ghory and Siddiqui (2002) from Pakistan.

Sexual Dimorphism In Podarcis Sicula Campestris, Milan Vogrin

Morphometric characters (snout-vent length, tail length, head length, head width, and number of ventrals and gulars) were analysed in 58 male and 44 female Italian Wall Lizards, Podarcis sicula campestris, from the Adriatic coast of Slovenia. The Italian Wall Lizard is significantly dimorphic in most characters analysed. Males were significantly larger than females. No differences between sexes were found in the number of gulars, whereas the number of transversal rows of ventrals was significantly higher in females (27-30) than in males (24-27).

Gonadal Maturation And Spawning In Penaeus Semisulcatus De Hann, 1844 By Hormone Injection, Mevlüt Aktaş, Meti̇n Kumlu

The effects of 3 hormones, HCG, LH-RH and serotonin (5-HT), on maturation and spawning of Penaeus semisulcatus de Hann, 1844 were investigated in 2 experiments in this study. The experiments were carried out in round (4 m diameter) fiberglass tanks for 50 days. In experiment 1, the effects of 3 dosages (1, 2 and 3 IU g^{-1} body weight (BW)) of HCG were compared against a sterile vehicle solution (0.85% NaCl) injected group (control group) and an eyestalk ablated group. Aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae) Of Kahramanmaraş Province, Turkey, Mahmut Murat Aslan, Nedi̇m Uygun

This study aimed to identify 68 aphid species and subspecies in Kahramanmaraş from 1998 to 2001. It was found that these species and subspecies were from 35 genera and the subfamilies Aphidinae, Chaitophorinae, Lachninae, Myzocallidinae, Pemphiginae and Pterocommatinae (Aphididae: Aphidoidea). Sixty-eight species, belonging to the tribes Aphidini-Aphidina, Aphidini-Rhopalosiphina, Macrosiphini, Chaitophorini, Cinarini, Lachnini, Myzocallidini, Eriosomatini, Fordini, Pemphigini and Pterocommatini, were examined. Aphis acetosae L., Aphis fabae mordvilkoi Borner and Janich, Cinara cupressi (Buckton) and Nurudea meitanensis (Tsai and Tang) are reported for the first time from Turkey.

Xylophagous insects, Bostrychidae, Buprestidae, Cerambycidae, Curculionidae and Scolytidae (Coleoptera), on fig trees in Aydın province, Turkey, were investigated in 2000 and 2001. Sixteen species of Coleoptera were collected, of which 8 are new records as fig pests in Turkey: Anthaxia cichorii Olivier, Agrilus roscidus Kiesenwetter, Acmaeodera (s.str.) flavolineata Laporte and Gory (Buprestidae), Stenopterus flavicornis Küster (Cerambycidae), Xyloperthella picea Olivier, Xylonites praeustus Germar, Scobicia chevrieri Villa (Bostrychidae) and Hypothenemus eruditus Westwood (Scolytidae). In addition, X. picea is the first record for the Turkish fauna.
