What We Know About Minnesota's First Endangered Fish Species: The Topeka Shiner, Jay T. Hatch

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The Topeka shiner, Notropis topeka, is the first of Minnesota's native ichthyofauna to be classified as federally endangered. The species is in serious decline in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa but is far more common in Minnesota than once was thought. At present, it is known from 89 sites in 17 streams of the Missouri River Drainage. Topeka shiners are multiple-clutch spawning nest associates of sunfishes and reproduce over an eight- to ten-week period between late May and early August. Mean clutch size is 261 to 284. During the nineteenth century settlement of Arkansas, the red wolf (Canis rufos), black bear (Ursus americanus), and mourtain lion (Puma concolor) were not only the three largest and most dangerous predators, they also stirred the imaginations of explorers and settlers. References to these species appeared prominently in the journals of early explorers such as George W. Featherstonhaugh (1844) and Frederick Gerstaecker (1854), and their presence inspired voluminous collections of stories and tall tales. Black bears were so common that a large trade developed in pelts, oil, and other body parts, and Arkansas became commonly known as "The Bear State." Wolves …

Wildlife managers in Arkansas are faced with managing a growing population of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus neloni) that has extended its range to incorporate private lands near the Buffalo National River (BNR) in northcentral Arkansas. This range expansion has created conflicts between private landowners and wildlife management personnel. To document the extent of damage and assess attitudes of landowners with elk on their land, interviews were conducted with landowners who contacted us or the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission about problems with elk. The reproductive cycle, food habits, and age and growth of the river shiner, Notropis blennius (Girard), in the Arkansas River of western Arkansas were studied from May 1996 through October 1997. Based on gonadosomatic indices and mean ovumd iameters of females, tubercle development in males, and the first appearance of young-of-year in samples, the breeding season extended from June through August in both 1996 and 1997. The Cerulean Warbler (Dendroica cerulea) has been declining in numbers in its North American nesting range, and the same is true in Arkansas. To provide specific sites that can be monitored in the future, this study describes places where the bird was documented in the state in the 1990s. The warbler was found in mature deciduous forest in both upland and bottomland situations but was most abundant in the upland Ozark forests and uncommon in other regions of the state. The Florida subspecies of the largemouth bass (LMB) has often been introduced into waters outside of its range, with escape of individuals into associated waterways common. Sustaining pure lines within controlled hatchery settings is also difficult. The present study investigated LMB populations by way of allozyme analysis of three diagnostic loci of 115 LMB in three public and seven private aquaculture ponds within Arkansas. The goal was to determine the success of hatcheries in maintaining pure subspecies. None of the pond populations studied were fixed for all alleles. During the past 20 years (1982-2001) we have studied the biology, occurrence and distribution of LeConte's (Brazilian) free-tailed bat, Tadarida brasiliensis cynocephala, in Arkansas. Colonies and individuals were reported from man made structures only. Four new county records have been documented since 1988, extending the range from the central part of the state to Arkansas's northern-most tier of counties. Numerous nuisance maternity colonies were investigated during exclusion activities and one, year-round colony provided the majority of reproductive data. A total of 152 free-tailed bats was submitted to the Arkansas Department of Health Rabies Laboratory (1982-2001); most during February through April, …

The Heath Mouse (Pseutlomys shortridgei) was formerly widely distributed in Western Australia and Victoria. However, now it is known only to exist in areasof fragmented habitat. Heath Mouse populations have not been investigated in Western Australia, as it was thought to be extinct in the state until its rediscovery in 1987. It is known from only tour locations, and from these, the highest numbers known are probably the 18 captures of this mouse from five years of trapping in Lake Magenta Nature Reserve. Populations of 2 species of arvicoline rodents, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) and meadow vole (M. pennsylvanicus), were monitored monthly in alfalfa, bluegrass, and tallgrass prairie habitats in east-central Illinois from 1972 through 1997. Alfalfa provides very highquality preferred food and poor vegetative cover for both vole species, whereas bluegrass provides intermediate food and vegetative cover. Preferred food resources were very low, especially for M. ochrogaster, and vegetative cover was very dense in tallgrass prairie. Maximum and mean population densities of M. ochrogaster were highest in alfalfa, intermediate in bluegrass, and lowest in tallgrass prairie. …

A rearing experiment was carried out to examine the effect of water temperature on the growth of the Black Sea turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, at ambient temperature (mean 15.2±0.6°C), 18, 20, 22 and 24°C with fish of 34.4±9.9 g initial body weight. The experiment lasted 30 days and the fish were fed to satiation three times a day with a commercial pelleted diet. Survival rates starting with the control group were 100, 83.4, 68.4, 3.4, and 1.7%, respectively. This study was carried out to determine the species of the subfamily Agathidinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in the Marmara region of Turkey. Samples were collected from 47 localities between 1985 and 1997. A total of 16 species were determined. The results revealed that Agathis fulmeki Fischer and Bassus linguarius (Nees von Esenbeck) are new records for the Turkish fauna. (G.) piger Wesmael, B. (G.) variator Nees from the genus Bracon Fabricius (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Braconinae). Morphological descriptions and its general distribution and distribution in Turkey are given. Bracon (G.) planinotus Tobias and B. (G.) helleni Telenga were found to be new records for Turkish fauna.

Biodiversity survey and inventory have resulted in new information on the distribution of Protostrongylidae in Dall’s sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) from the Northwest Territories (Northwest Territories, Canada) and from Alaska (Alaska, USA). In 1998, Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei adults were found for the first time in the skeletal muscles of Dall’s sheep in the Mackenzie Mountains (Northwest Territories). Adult P. odocoilei were associated with petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages and localized myositis; eggs and larvae in the lungs were associated with diffuse granulomatous pneumonia. Onchocercosis, caused by Onchocerca flexuosa, was observed in red deer (Cervus elaphus) from Spain for the first time. Adult specimens of O. flexuosa were found in nodules in subcutaneous tissues in 42 of 125 (33%) red deer between October 1994 and September 1995; intensity of infection 6 SD was 3.93 ± 5.26 nodules per infected host. A clear seasonal pattern in the distribution of nodules was observed, with higher values of prevalence and intensity in fall and winter in contrast to spring and summer. Estimation of DDT by GLC (gas liquid chromatography) in the PCSIR strain of Musca domestica L. Shows that 59.69 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 55.74 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether after treatment with 2.0 ug/fly. In the Holland strain, 18.3 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 17.1 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether. In the Malir strain 4.35 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 1.29 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether.

Studies On Sediment Toxicity Bioassays Using Chironomus Thummi K., 1911 Larvae, Levent Bat, Mehmet Akbulut

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The acute toxicity of zinc, copper and lead to freshwater dipteran Chironomus thummi larvae was evaluated by static bioassays, calculating the LC_{50} (lethality concentration for 50%). Mortality increased with increasing concentrations of zinc, copper and lead. The LC_{50}s of Zn, Cu and Pb for survival were 11.2, 19.1 and 14.3 µg g^{-1}, respectively. The results indicated that Zn had the greatest toxicity, followed by Pb and Cu. Individual weight increased with increasing Cu, Zn and Pb concentrations. The results are discussed and compared with those of other studies.

The Effects Of Precocene Ii On The Fine Structure Of Corpus Allatum In Adult Female Anacridium Aegyptium L. (Orthoptera, Acrididae), Gürsel Ergen

In this study, the effects of the antijuvenile hormone Precocene II on the corpus allatum of adult females of Anacridium aegyptium L. (Orthoptera) were investigated with electron microscopy. In the insects, topically treated with 500 µg precocene II, the corpora allata did not show marked atrophy or destruction. After 10 or 20 days of precocene II treatment, the ultrastructural changes of especially the nuclei, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum membranes, Golgi complexes and some other intracellular organelles in the gland cells, probably reflect a moderate sensitivity to this compound.

This study was carried to determine the ornithofauna of Doğancı Pond and vicinity, which is located in the Alpu District of Eskişehir province. The study area, which is situated on one of the migration routes for birds, has a natural pond and wetlands occurring around the pond during spring and fall. In the study period from August 1996 to August 1997, 86 species and 1 subspecies belonging to 36 families from 13 orders were identified in the area.

The age and growth parameters of red bandfish (Cepola rubescens L.,1766) were determined from the specimens collected in İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea) between January 1996 and February 1997. Mean length at age data from otolith readings were used to estimate the growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation: for females, L_{\infity}=78.48 cm, K=0.17 y^{-1}, t_o=0.0972 y, W_{\infity}=110.00 g, K=0.10 y^{-1}, to=0.1033 y and for males L_{\infity}= 83.22 cm, K=0.16 y^{-1}, t_o=0.0888 y ; W_{\infity}=129.83, K=0.0818 y^{-1}, to=-0.4117 y. Excretion in marine animals is considered an important factor in assessing physiological status. Perna viridis, a widely distributed bivalve species, was found to be the dominant (>70%) organism in the seawater intake tunnel of Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS). The excretion patterns (ammonia, nitrite, phosphate and fecal matter production) of three different size groups (4-5 cm, 6-7 cm, and 8-9 cm shell length) of P. viridis were studied in the laboratory at different salinities (15, 20, 25, 30 and 34 ppt). The age, growth and reproduction characteristics of 1105 Acanthalburnus microlepis from the Yağan region of the Aras River, Turkey, were determined from monthly samples. Ages ranged from 1 to 7 years. The sex ratio was approximately 1.0 (51.49 % males, 48.51 % females). Females attained greater size and age than males. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L_o= 29.87 cm, K= 0.1049, t_o= -1.92. The length-weight relationships for males and females were found to be W=0.0099L^{3.098} and W=0.0118L^{3.052} respectively. With the aim of identifying cladoceran and copepod fauna of İkizgöl, which is situated 565 m above sea level on the southern slope of Yamanlar Mountain, plankton samples were collected monthly by plankton net horizontally and vertically, with a mesh size of 55µm between December 1994 and May 1996. Collected specimens were preserved in 4% formaldehyde. As a result, a total of 16 (12 cladoceran and 4 copepods) species were identified from İkizgöl.
