Food habits, nutrient preferences, and roost variations of Indian flying fox Pteropus giganteus were investigated for a period of 1 year in two public parks in Lahore, Pakistan. Bolus and guano samples of P. giganteus were collected on a monthly basis, and seeds of 32 plant species belonging to 23 genera and 15 families were identified from the ejecta samples. Of these 32 food species, 8 were native and 24 were exotic; 13 were commercially important, while 19 species had no mercantile value. Identifying The Hotspots Of Wildlife-Vehicle Collision On The Çankırı-Kırıkkale Highway During Summer, Ali̇ Uğur Özcan, Nuri̇ Kaan Özkazanç

In this study, we identified hotspots of mammal-vehicle collisions that occurred on the Çankırı-Kırıkkale highway between May and October 2014. We collected 58 records from 6 species. Sixteen casualties occurred on the part of the road with low traffic volume (1818 vehicles/day) and 42 casualties occurred on the part with moderate traffic volume (4680 vehicles/day). The two species with the highest number of records were hedgehog Erinaceus concolor (n = 27) and red fox Vulpes vulpes (n = 21). The genus Paratrombium Bruyant (Acari: Trombidiidae) is recorded from Turkey for the first time based on collections of P. insulare (Berlese, 1910) and P. megalochirum (Berlese, 1910). Each species is illustrated, and briefly redescribed with accompanying drawings. Larvae of both species were obtained by experimental rearing. The updated distribution of species is provided.

Three species of springtails were identified as new records for Iranian fauna from Ilam Province, western Iran: Hemisotoma quadrioculatus (Martynova, 1967), Isotoma anglicana Lubbock, 1862 (Isotomidae), and Metaphorura riozoi Castaño-Meneses, Palacios- Vargas & Traser, 2000 (Tullbergiidae). Brief information for each species about material examined, ecology, illustrations, and distribution is given.

This study was conducted in Erzurum Province during the seasons of spring, summer, and autumn of 2007-2014. The genus Hoplomachus and species Hoplomachus thunbergii (Fallen, 1807) are recorded for the first time from Turkey. The important taxonomic characters are described and illustrations are provided. In addition, distributional data of the species in Turkey and the rest of the world, the host plants, the number of species, and collection locality information for each of the species investigated are given.

Invertebrate infestation in sea turtle nests (Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas) was recorded for the first time for Alata beach, Mersin, Turkey. A total of 121 green and 32 loggerhead nests were recorded and 34 (22.22%) of these were examined in terms of the invertebrate faunal composition. The specimens found in the nests were identified to order, family, or genus levels and they were represented as 5 orders. These invertebrate groups are Pimelia sp. larvae (Tenebrionidae; Coleoptera), Elater sp. larvae (Elateridae; Coleoptera), Scarabaeidae larvae (Coleoptera), Muscidae (Diptera), Enchytraeidae (Oligochaeta), Myrmeleontidae (Neuroptera), and Cyrptostigmata (Acari).

Even though the phylogeography of hedgehogs has been well studied, information on the genetic variability of the northern white-breasted hedgehog Erinaceus roumanicus from the Balkans is lacking, since the previous studies were based on very limited sampling across the Balkans. The aim of this study is to estimate the genetic diversity and population structuring of E. roumanicus from the Central Balkans and to complement an already proposed phylogeographic scenario of this species. Chemical-based insecticides/larvicides pose a great threat to humans. The present study describes the histopathological changes in Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae after exposure to two essential oils, i.e. Eucalyptus globulus and Aloe vera. The pool barb, Puntius sophore Hamilton, 1822, is a tropical freshwater cyprinid fish native to inland waters in Asia. Herein, a novel myxozoan from plasmodia on the caudal fin of P. sophore from Ranjit Sagar Wetland in Punjab, India is described. Myxospores were consistent with the genus Myxobolus, ellipsoidal in frontal view, lemon-shaped in lateral view; length 7.76 ± 0.28 µm, width 5.36 ± 0.15 µm. Detailed descriptions of the immature stages, i.e. eggs, larvae, and pupae, of Culicoides peregrinus Kieffer were made based on scanning electron microscopy and bright field microscopy. Measurements of different larval instars were also studied. Wild engorged females were collected by UV light trap and made to oviposit under laboratory conditions onto wet filter paper within glass vials. Among the laid eggs, embryonated eggs were reared in artificial rearing medium in the laboratory for obtaining life stages. The immature stages were also collected from their natural habitat (cattle manure) and subsequently processed and described.

Wound healing is a complex process affected by various conditions, including oxidative stress. The present study explored the time-dependent effects of platelet-derived growth factor (PGDF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) administration on oxidative markers during acute stage wound healing. Thirty-six Wistar rats were distributed into three major groups; skin wounds were inflicted in all groups. The aim of this study was to identify differences between different types of water body within the same river basin by comparing the composition of the zooplankton community. The study was conducted in three types of water body in the Sakarya Basin in northwestern Turkey: an alluvial barrier lake (Lake Poyrazlar), a pond (Sorgun Pond), and a reservoir (Çubuk II Reservoir). The spatiotemporal changes of these three types of aquatic habitats were investigated in terms of the zooplankton organisms by examining their diversity, evenness, and differences in the abundance of species. Microhabitats play an important role as resources that are partitioned between phylogenetically related or ecologically similar species (i.e., a guild). This hypothesis was tested by first elucidating phylogenetically closed Sarawak frog species via DNA sequencing of the 16S rRNA mitochondrial DNA gene, and later determining their microhabitat guild and partitioning via nonmetric dimensional scale. Mitochondrial 16S gene revealed 5 monophyletic groups consisting of Hylarana erythraea + Amnirana nicobariensis, Chalcorana raniceps, Abavorana luctuosa, Pulchrana signata + P. picturata, and P. baramica + P. glandulosa + P. laterimaculata. A faunistic survey of the genera Bracon Fabricius, 1804 and Habrobracon Ashmead, 1895 was carried out in some parts of northern (Guilan Province), northeastern (North Khorasan Province), eastern (Khorasan-e Razavi and Sistan-o Baluchestan provinces), south-central (Kerman Province), central (Isfahan Province), and western (Kermanshah Province) Iran during 2011-2014. Monthly samples from commercial catches obtained with purse seiners operating in the Croatian fishing grounds (eastern Adriatic Sea) were collected throughout 2013, excluding January and December due to a fishing ban. Overall, 1010 sardine individuals were analyzed. Total body length ranged from 10.4 to 17.6 cm (mean ± SD: 13.9 ± 1.28 cm). Slightly larger individuals were caught during autumn at the beginning of the spawning season. Analysis of length-mass relationship showed that sardine specimens grow isometrically (b = 3.063). The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of 12 elements in the livers of 14 different species of birds from East Poland, as well as factors affecting their accumulation. The greatest amount of Cd was found in the livers of woodcocks. Analyses showed that Cd accumulation in the liver was associated with the consumption of soil invertebrates. Our data show that some corvids were the most vulnerable to the effects of lead bullets. In the livers of some of them, lead levels exceeded 6 mg/kg. Snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is an elusive endangered carnivore found in remote mountain regions of Central Asia, with sparse distribution in northern Pakistan, including Chitral and Baltistan. The present study determined the food habits of snow leopard, including preferred prey species and seasonal variation in diet. Fifty-six scat samples were collected and analyzed to determine the diet composition in two different seasons, i.e. summer and winter. In 2001, Przewalski's horse (Equus przewalskii) was reintroduced into a Eurasian desert-steppe transitional area in China. Recent studies of Przewalski's horse have not examined the relationship between food patches and the horse's feeding choice behavior. This study aimed to study the vegetation communities of the reintroduction area and combine this information with feeding time data to explore the foraging strategy of Przewalski's horse. A total of 588 vegetation patches were surveyed, which were divided into 27 vegetation clusters. The zerconid mites collected from İstanbul Province between January 2012 and September 2013 are evaluated and the following species are recorded: Prozercon balıkesirensis, P. buraki, P. carpathofimbriatus, P. demirsoyi, P. fimbriatus, P. satapliae, P. sultani, P. traegardhi, P. yavuzi, Zercon colligans, Z. cretensis, Z. inonuensis, Z. istanbulensis, Z. laczii, Z. lepurus, Z. marinae, and Z. nemoralis. Of these, P. carpathofimbriatus, Z. cretensis, Z. laczii, and Z. marinae are recorded for the first time from Turkey. The rare weevil species Hypera (Boreohypera) moczarskii Penecke, 1936, previously recorded only in Greece, has been registered for the first time in Central Serbia. Two adult males were collected in 1993 and 1994, in two places in the area of Kragujevac (Central Serbia). These findings extend H. moczarskii's distribution area to the north, and this rare species should no longer be considered as Greek, but rather as endemic to the Balkan Peninsula. In January 2014, gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) conjoined twin calves were found dead in Laguna Ojo de Liebre (Scammon's Lagoon), Baja California Sur, Mexico. The thoracopagus (united ventrally at the chest) individuals were conjoined in the thorax region, sharing the navel and genital area, but with two distinct heads and flukes. Although observed in humans and domestic animals, this case is rare among cetaceans. Some conjoined twin cetacean fetuses have previously been reported; however, this is the first report of the congenital anomaly in Eschrichtius robustus.

During the cetacean surveys of the first Turkish-Ukrainian Antarctic Research Expedition conducted on 5-8 April 2016 in Lemaire Channel, Penola Strait, Flanders Bay, southern Gerlache Strait, and southern Neumayer Channel in the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 74 humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in 24 sightings and 11 Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis) in 6 sightings were recorded. The overall encounter rate (number of sightings/survey effort in nautical miles) was 0.333 (0.266 for humpback whale, 0.066 for Antarctic minke whale). The karyotype of the Caucasian pygmy shrew (Sorex volnuchini) consists of 2n = 40 NFa = 54. The X chromosome is metacentric and the Y chromosome is large acrocentric. In the chromosome set, there are six metacentric/submetacentric, one large subtelocentric, one small metacentric, and 11 acrocentric autosomal chromosome pairs. C-negative and C-positive heterochromatin band regions are determined in the karyotype. NORs were localized in the secondary constriction in autosomal pair no. 17 of Sorex volnuchini. Our study was performed on the phylogeographic structure of Blanford's jerboa (Jaculus blanfordi (Murray, 1884)) collected from nine localities in Iran, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan and was based on mitochondrial evidence indicating a slight phylogeographic divergence among the populations. We aimed to amplify two frequently used mitochondrial markers, cytochrome b (cyt b) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) fragments, from 33 specimens obtained from the abovementioned countries. Our phylogeographic analyses uncovered two distinct groups, thus supporting the presence of two subspecies: J. b. blanfordi in Iran and J. b. turcmenicus in northern Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The present study was carried out in order to determine the molluscan species distributed in Kuşadası Bay. The investigated material was collected from different biotopes at 11 stations at varying depths between 0 and 180 m; it was sampled in the years 2000 and 2005 by using a van Veen grab and a dredge, and randomly by snorkeling. The study resulted in 134 molluscan species determined in Kuşadası Bay. Among them, Septifer cumingii Recluz, 1849 and Mytilaster solidus Monterosato, 1883 are new records for the Aegean coast of Turkey. New species of Bithyniidae (Pseudobithynia adiyamanensis sp. nov.), Hydrobiidae (Pseudorientalia ceriti sp. nov.), and Bythinellidae (Bythinella yerlii sp. nov.) are described from three different locations in Turkey. Samples were collected in 2013 and 2016 and the shell and male genital tract morphology of the new species were studied. All of these new taxa were compared to congeners that live in Turkey and adjacent countries.

A new species, Camponotus praegracilis Karaman et Kiran sp. nov. is described; it is a member of the subgenus Tanaemyrmex, from the most species-rich ant genus in Turkey. Some biological notes for the new species are also given. Diagnostic characters of the new species, distinguishing the new species from the most similar species, are also described.
