The Anatolian water buffalo is a native water buffalo breed only being reared in Turkey. The objective of this study was to investigate gene polymorphisms on exons 4 and 5 of the growth hormone (GH) and on exon 10 of the growth hormone receptor (GHR), which are thought to be related to meat yields of Anatolian water buffalo. Blood samples of 192 water buffaloes from Sivas Province were used in DNA extractions by phenol-chloroform method. DNA samples were amplified by using specific primers in PCR. PCR products were digested by Alu I (GH, n: 167) and Alu I (GHR, n: …

Pelvic And Sacral Size Dimorphism And Allometry In Two Predatory Carnivores With Different Life Histories And Locomotory Adaptations, Alexander Csanady, Peter Krisovsky, Ladislav Hloska
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) of the wolf and the lynx was evaluated for 15 pelvic and sacral variables in 48 specimens from the Western Carpathians. Our data confirmed small male-biased SSD in the pelvic and sacral bones for both species. We suggest that this can be explained by the need for a compromise between requirements for locomotion and giving birth. We also confirmed that significant differences exist between the species in the size of the pelvic and sacral bones. We discuss our findings in light of the species? different life histories.

On Tooth Anomalies And The Loss Of Canis Lupus (Mammalia: Carnivora) In Turkey, Eli̇f Yildiz Ay, İrfan Albayrak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Because of their feeding habits, which are affected by their ranking in the last steps of the food chain, the teeth of carnivores are subjected to great forces during the breaking up and chewing of food when they are hunting. In this sense, missing teeth and tooth anomalies are common in carnivores. This research was based on an examination of the properties of the tooth structures of 25 wolf specimens collected in Turkey between 2014 and 2018. In this study, the excess and missing teeth, tooth fracture, and root anomalies in the lower and upper jaw of the head skeletons …

Sexual Size Dimorphism And Sex Determination By External Measurements In The Redshank Tringa Totanus, Wlodzimierz Meissner, Pavel Pinchuk, Natalia Karlionova, Izabela Fischer, Lucyna Pilacka
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The Redshank is a wader species that shows no sexual dimorphism in plumage, but some dimorphism in size. To propose a method for sexing birds of this species by linear measurements, a discriminant function analysis was applied to a set of morphometric traits in birds captured during the spring migration in southern Belarus. In total, 113 males and 75 females were measured and sexed molecularly. On average, females were larger in all measurements than males. The most sexually dimorphic trait was wing length, which was included in the discriminant function analysis. Jackknife cross-validation showed that the provided equation allowed the …

Morphological Variation Of Pumpkinseed (Lepomis Gibbosus) With Emphasis On Allometry, Fati̇h Mangit, Mustafa Korkmaz, Sedat Vahdet Yerli̇
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Pumpkinseed(Lepomis gibbosus)is an exotic fish species widely distributed in Europe and it has expanded its distribution area in Turkey since its first report in 1982. It is well known that invasive species like L. gibbosus adapt to introduced habitats relatively well. In order to evaluate morphological variation within this invasive species, sampling was carried out in June 2012 and May 2013 in the Aegean and Thrace regions, respectively. Body-form variability in sampled populations of L. gibbosus was investigated using landmark-based geometric morphometrics. L. gibbosus showed significant geographic- and habitat-based differences with and without allometric standardization. However, outcomes of these results …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
The sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO1) genes of eight species crabs of Grapsoidea were determined and analyzed in this paper. The traditional classification is that Grapsidae contains four subfamilies comprising Grapsinae, Varuninae, Sesarminae, and Plagusiinae, which are also treated as families in some studies. There is a lack of clarity in the classification of some species, such as Eriocheir species. In this study, we conducted the first exploration of evolutionary relationships among species based on analysis of the molecular data of CO1 genes of eight species (Sesarmops sinensis, Clistocoeloma sinensis, Perisesarma bidens, Helice latimera, Helice tientsinensis, …

Spalax Denizliensis Sp. Nov. (Spalacidae, Rodentia) From An Early Pleistocene-Aged Locality In The Denizli Basin (Southwestern Turkey), Hüseyi̇n Erten
Turkish Journal of Zoology
It is thought that Spalacidae (Rodentia, Mammalia) originated in Anatolia. They are widespread among Neogene-aged faunas in Anatolia and they are used as zonal fossils because of their strong evolutionary dynamics. Only one fossil species (S. odessanus, Middle Pliocene) has been identified from the genus Spalax, which has more than 14 species presently. There are no fossil findings of this genus in Anatolia. Early Pleistocene-aged Spalax denizliensis sp. nov. from the Denizli Basin is the youngest fossil Spalax species and it will be helpful to understand the evolution of recent Spalax species.
