A Standardised Analytical Framework For Sampling Fish Communities: Relevance Toturkish Riverine Ecosystems, Lorenzo Vilizzi, Ali̇ Serhan Tarkan, Baran Yoğurtçuoğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Fish communities are important indicators of the health of riverine ecosystems. Fish monitoring for The Living Murray (TLM) initiative, one of Australia's most ambitious restoration undertakings for the degraded river-floodplain biota of the River Murray system (south-eastern Australia), was carried out annually from 2005 to 2011 across six 'Icon Sites', including the habitats and reaches therein. These spatial and temporal components of variation in fish community abundance and composition must be taken explicitly into account for consistent assessment of riverine ecosystem health. To address this requirement, a standardised analytical framework, consisting of a sampling design and appropriate statistical methods, is …

Natural Animal Food Preference Of Chinese Mole Shrew (Anourosorex Squamipes) From An Urban Area: A Laboratory Study, Yun-Chun Ye, Yi Luo, Zhao-Min Zhou

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Most wild animals are urban avoiders, but some others become adapters or exploiters successfully living in urban areas. Often, the latter is assumed to be attracted into cities by readily accessible and digestive anthropogenic food resources. Here, we quantified food preferences of sixteen (eight females and eight males) Chinese mole shrews (Anourosorex squamipes) captured from an urban area for "cafeteria tests" in laboratory. Shrews were presented with twelve foods allocated into three sets (natural animal, natural plant, and anthropogenic food). Once the most two highly consumed food items from each set were determined, six items were pooled together to form …

Eight extant species have been so far recognized for Calomyscus Thomas, 1905 which is distributed in the west of Asia. The only species which was reported from the Zagros Mountains in western and southern Iran was C. bailwardi. However, based on the integrative methods such as molecular, morphometric and karyological studies a new species is worth to be described other than C. bailwardi from the Zagros Mountains. In the present survey a new species which has been distributed in western regions of Iran was described as Calomyscus behzadi sp. nov. The new species constituted a monophyletic clade in phylogenetic tree …

Nesting water bird colonies may act as important drivers of aquatic-terrestrial nutrient turnover in coastal ecosystems. By depositing a large amount of guano, they induce changes in the structure of soils, flora, and fauna. However, little is known about how nesting water bird colonies influence soil fauna, especially in a Mediterranean type of coastal landscape. In this study, focus was placed on how time had elapsed since the last overwintering activity of cormorant colonies, as a factor that affects the structure of springtail communities and edaphic parameters in the Black and Azov Sea coastal forest ecosystems. Black Sea coastal forests …

Plastics have become an inseparable part of modern life as a consequence of their versatility, low cost, durability, and lightweight. In this study, the presence of microplastics (MPs) in the stomachs and digestive tracts of 243 individuals of leaping mullet (Chelon saliens (Risso, 1810)), red mullet (Mullus barbatus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758), surmullet (Mullus surmuletus Linnaeus, 1758), Mediterranean horse mackerel (Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner, 1868)), and sand steenbras (Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758)), collected along the Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean coasts of Turkey was examined microscopically and through μ-Raman analysis. A total of 283 MP particles were extracted. Among the examined species, the …
