Systematical Studies On The Genus Bracon (Glabrobracon) (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Braconinae) In Ankara Province, Yasemi̇n Güler, Neşe Çağatay

The present study includes the species Bracon (Glabrobracon ) osculator Nees, B. (G.) lividus Telenga, B. (G.) planinotus Tobias, B. (G.) tschitcherini Kokoujev, B. (G.) helleni Telenga, B. (G.) piger Wesmael, B. (G.) variator Nees from the genus Bracon Fabricius (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Braconinae). Morphological descriptions and its general distribution and distribution in Turkey are given. Bracon (G.) planinotus Tobias and B. (G.) helleni Telenga were found to be new records for Turkish fauna.

The Anomurans of the Aegean coasts of Turkey were studied between 1987 and 1997, in the region from the Gulf of Saros in the north to Marmaris in south at 17 stations; the 811 specimens obtained were identified as belonging to 28 species. Moreover, all of the early studies were reviewed on the Anomuran fauna of Turkish coasts and it was determined that 3 _species were reported from the Black Sea coasts of Turkey, 20 species from the Sea of Marmara, 27 species from the Aegean coasts of Turkey and 17 species from the Turkish coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. …

Quantitative Estimation Of Ddt By Glc In Different Strains Of Musca Domestica L. By Using Hexane As Well As Diethyl Ether, Kahkashan Akhtar, Syed Naim-Ul-Hasan Naqvi

Estimation of DDT by GLC (gas liquid chromatography) in the PCSIR strain of Musca domestica L. Shows that 59.69 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 55.74 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether after treatment with 2.0 ug/fly. In the Holland strain, 18.3 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 17.1 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether. In the Malir strain 4.35 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 1.29 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether.

Studies On Sediment Toxicity Bioassays Using Chironomus Thummi K., 1911 Larvae, Levent Bat, Mehmet Akbulut

The acute toxicity of zinc, copper and lead to freshwater dipteran Chironomus thummi larvae was evaluated by static bioassays, calculating the LC_{50} (lethality concentration for 50%). Mortality increased with increasing concentrations of zinc, copper and lead. The LC_{50}s of Zn, Cu and Pb for survival were 11.2, 19.1 and 14.3 µg g^{-1}, respectively. The results indicated that Zn had the greatest toxicity, followed by Pb and Cu. Individual weight increased with increasing Cu, Zn and Pb concentrations. The results are discussed and compared with those of other studies.

In this study, three kinds of neurosecretory cells, which are called A, B and C-types, have been described in the thoracic and abdominal ganglia of adult Melanogryllus desertus (PALLAS, 1771), (Orthoptera; Gryllidae) by using paraldehyde fuchsine and azan staining methods at the light microscope level.

In this study, the effects of the antijuvenile hormone Precocene II on the corpus allatum of adult females of Anacridium aegyptium L. (Orthoptera) were investigated with electron microscopy. In the insects, topically treated with 500 µg precocene II, the corpora allata did not show marked atrophy or destruction. After 10 or 20 days of precocene II treatment, the ultrastructural changes of especially the nuclei, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum membranes, Golgi complexes and some other intracellular organelles in the gland cells, probably reflect a moderate sensitivity to this compound.

A Study On The Ornithofauna Of Doğancı Pond In Alpu-Eskişehir, Eli̇f Erdoğdu

This study was carried to determine the ornithofauna of Doğancı Pond and vicinity, which is located in the Alpu District of Eskişehir province. The study area, which is situated on one of the migration routes for birds, has a natural pond and wetlands occurring around the pond during spring and fall. In the study period from August 1996 to August 1997, 86 species and 1 subspecies belonging to 36 families from 13 orders were identified in the area.

The age and growth parameters of red bandfish (Cepola rubescens L.,1766) were determined from the specimens collected in İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea) between January 1996 and February 1997. Mean length at age data from otolith readings were used to estimate the growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation: for females, L_{\infity}=78.48 cm, K=0.17 y^{-1}, t_o=0.0972 y, W_{\infity}=110.00 g, K=0.10 y^{-1}, to=0.1033 y and for males L_{\infity}= 83.22 cm, K=0.16 y^{-1}, t_o=0.0888 y ; W_{\infity}=129.83, K=0.0818 y^{-1}, to=-0.4117 y. Excretion in marine animals is considered an important factor in assessing physiological status. Perna viridis, a widely distributed bivalve species, was found to be the dominant (>70%) organism in the seawater intake tunnel of Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS). The excretion patterns (ammonia, nitrite, phosphate and fecal matter production) of three different size groups (4-5 cm, 6-7 cm, and 8-9 cm shell length) of P. viridis were studied in the laboratory at different salinities (15, 20, 25, 30 and 34 ppt). The age, growth and reproduction characteristics of 1105 Acanthalburnus microlepis from the Yağan region of the Aras River, Turkey, were determined from monthly samples. Ages ranged from 1 to 7 years. The sex ratio was approximately 1.0 (51.49 % males, 48.51 % females). Females attained greater size and age than males. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L_o= 29.87 cm, K= 0.1049, t_o= -1.92. The length-weight relationships for males and females were found to be W=0.0099L^{3.098} and W=0.0118L^{3.052} respectively. With the aim of identifying cladoceran and copepod fauna of İkizgöl, which is situated 565 m above sea level on the southern slope of Yamanlar Mountain, plankton samples were collected monthly by plankton net horizontally and vertically, with a mesh size of 55µm between December 1994 and May 1996. Collected specimens were preserved in 4% formaldehyde. As a result, a total of 16 (12 cladoceran and 4 copepods) species were identified from İkizgöl.

In this study, some biological characteristics such as age and sex composition, growth in length and weight, age-length, age-weight and length-weight relationships, condition factor spawning time, age of sexual maturity, and fecundity of Silurus triostegus in Atatürk Dam lake were investigated. The percentage of females was 48.3% and that of males 57.7% out of 623 specimens belonging to age groups I-XI. Isometric growth patterns were proved from the length-weight relationships. The aim of this study was to determine the erythrocyte and nucleus sizes of some scincids (Ablepharus chernovi, Chalcides ocellatus, Eumeces schneideri, Mabuya aurata, Mabuya vittata, and Ophiomorus punctatissimus) from Turkey by means of blood smears stained with Wright's stain. The largest erythrocytes were observed in the smears of E. schneideri, and the smallest in M. vittata, while the largest nuclei were observed in E. schneideri and the smallest were in M. aurata. In terms of the studied species, the nucleus and erythrocyte sizes were found to be correlated (r= 0.302, P< 0.01).

Multivariate morphometric analyses revealed that the range of Rana bedriagae caralitana extends further west to include Çardak in Denizli (western Turkey). The presence of the forms caralitana and nominate bedriagae syntopically may indicate species status for the former.

In this study, the age, growth and reproduction properties of 627 barbels, Barbus plebejus escherichi (Steindachner, 1897), from Oltu Stream in the Çoruh River Basin were investigated during a period from August 1994 to July 1996. The age of this species ranged between age groups 1 and 10, the second age group being dominant. Individuals were composed of 64.59% males and 35.41% females. von Bertalanffy growth parameters and length-weight relationships were L_t=29.35x(1-e^{-0.139(t+1.640)}), W_t=281.11x(1-e^{-0.139(t+1.640)})^{2.843} W=0.0189.FL^{2.843} (r=0.96) in males and L_t=32.77x(1-e^{-0.116(t+1.891)}), W_t=392.10x(1-e^{-0.116(t+1.891)})^{2.911}, W=0.0152.FL^{2.911} (r=0.97) in females. We compared the European honeybee races Apis mellifera armeniaca, A.m. caucasica, A.m. cypria, and A.m. syriaca. These subspecies are endemic to very different habitats. Additionally, they are exposed to very different levels of predation. A.m. caucasica exists where honeybee predators typically are rare, while the remaining subspecies have ranges that coincide with areas where honeybee predators are abundant. Foraging decisions of workers visiting artificial flower patches containing blue, white, and yellow flowers were recorded. A Study On The Feeding Biology Of Laudakia (=Agama) Stellio (L. 1758) (Lacertilia: Agamidae) Populations In The Antalya Region, Serdar Düşen, Mehmet Öz

The feeding biology of Laudakia (=Agama) stellio (L. 1758) was studied using 91 specimens collected from the Antalya region over two consecutive years (1995 and 1996). A total of 1224 prey items were identifed and their frequency of occurrence and percent of diet were tabulated. The majority of the diet consisted of the class Insecta (99.18%), and within this class, Hymenoptera (72.21%) was the major order represented, primarily by the families Formicidae (49.83%) and Apidae (16.74%). In addition to insects, L. stellio feeds on plant material, insect larvae and eggs, and even snails, showing opportunist feeding behavior.

The effect of cold storage on the adult longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of Apanteles galleriae Wilkinson, a koinobiont, solitary and early instar larval endoparasitoid of the Small Wax Moth Achoria grisella Fabr. was investigated. The rearing of both parasitoid and host cultures and experiments related to the effect of storing Apanteles galleriae adults at low temperature (+ 6°C) were conducted at 25 ± 1°C, 60 ± 5% RH under a photoperiod of 12:12 (L:D). Synactinomyxon type 1, aurantiactinomyxon type 3, echinactinomyxon type 5 and raabeia type 4 were studied at the TEM level in order to determine the developmental stages within their oligochaete hosts. All the actinosporean types studied had uninucleate cells as the earliest stage of development. The formation of a subsequent binucleate cell stage was either due to the division of the nucleus in a uninucleate cell or the plasmogamy of two uninucleate cells. The histological development of the digestive system and swim bladder of Chalcalburnus tarichi larvae and their histology in adults were studied under light microscopy. After hatching, the digestive tract is a simple undifferentiated tube. Exogenous feeding started on the 6th day. The yolk sac was absorbed completely on the 9th day. A Study On Endocrine Cells In The Midgut Of Agrotis Segetum (Denn.And Schiff.) (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae), Nursel Gül, Hakki Sayar, Nesri̇n Özsoy, Cevat Ayvali

The structure of midgut endocrine cells of Agrotis segetum larvae was examined by light and electron microscopy. It was observed that the endocrine cells were located on the basal lamina and among the columnar epithelial cells of the midgut. The cells were morphologically determined as columnar or coniform. The cytoplasm of endocrine cells was observed to contain rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, developed Golgi complex, vesicles and numerous small secretory granules. It was also observed that the secretory granules were often located in the basal region of the endocrine cells.

In this study, the characteristic features, distribution and ecology of the amphipod Niphargus valachicus E. Dobreanu & C. Manolache, 1933 sampled at Sırakaraağaçlar Stream of Sinop, flowing into the Black Sea, are given. Four taxa of Niphargus genus, freshwater Amphipoda fauna have been identified in Turkey. In addition to these, Niphargus valachicus is a new record for the Turkish freshwater fauna.

A comparison was made of the shape and size of the bacula of 32 Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797) and 26 Myotis blythi (Tomes, 1857) collected from Turkey. It was determined that baculum size does not distinguish the two species but baculum shape distinguishes them.

In this study, Rotifera fauna of Devegeçidi dam lake was taxonomically investigated between April 1995 and December 1996. Thirty-four species belonging to the phylum Rotifera were identified, all of which were new for this lake. Three species (Brachionus caudatus, Lecane (M.) scutata and Testudinella truncata) were new records for Turkish inland waters.

We propose that these new forms should be taxonomically named Entodinium oektemae n. sp. and Entodinium imaii n. sp. The frequencies Entodinium oektemae n. sp. and Entodinium imaii n. sp. were 6.67% 16.67% respectively. The main characteristics of these two species are described in detail and discussed in comparison with those of the previously reported ones.

A Study On Microgastrinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Species In Gökçeada And Bozcaada, Fi̇li̇z İnanç, Ahmet Beyarslan

Samples were collected from the islands of Gökçeada and Bozcaada between 1996 and 1997. A total of 28 species belonging to 7 genera of Microgastrinae were determined. The species which are new records for the Turkish fauna are Apanteles brunnistigma Abdinbekova, Dolichogenidea cheles (Nixon), D. lacteicolor (Viereck), D. petrovae (Walley), D. subemarginata (Abdinbekova), Choeras parasitellae (Bouché), Glyptapanteles acasta (Nixon), Cotesia setebis (Nixon), and Microplitis docilis Nixon.

Stock differentiation studies of whiting, Merlangius merlangus euxinus, from the Turkish Black Sea coast were carried out using morphometric and meristic characters and applying the generalised distance of Mahalanobis. Fifteen morphometric measurements, together with eleven meristic characters, were used in the analyses. Insufficient differences (P>0.01) in general phenotypic and genotypic characteristics implied the existence of a single unit stock. Samples taken in different periods showed lower similarity than those taken in the same periods.

Ecological and faunistic information on 385 Heteropteran specimens, belonging to 38 species of 30 genera of 9 families, collected from Bozcaada, between May and September 1996, is given. Thirty-six of these 38 species are new records for the fauna of Bozcaada.

A total of 572 specimens of bony fish were obtained as a result of bottom trawling at 47 stations by R/V Arar of the University of Istanbul at the south of the Sea of Marmara, in 1992 and 1995. Upon analysis of these specimens, it was revealed that 49 bony fish species, including 5 subspecies, belonging to 30 families were found, and their diagnostic characteristics, the place and the depth where they were caught are given.
