Nucleolar Organizer Regions In Mesocricetus Brandti (Nehring, 1898) (Mammalia: Rodentia) From The Yozgat And Tokat Provinces Of Turkey, Nursel Baydemi̇r

Mesocricetus brandti possesses a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 42, a fundamental number of NF = 82, and a fundamental number of autosomal arms of NFa = 78. The chromosome set consists of 17 meta-submetacentric pairs, 2 subtelocentric pairs, and 1 acrocentric pair. The X chromosome is large and metacentric while the Y is medium-sized and metacentric. The nucleolar organizer regions were located at the telomeric region of 7 biarmed autosomes and at the centromeric region of 1 acrocentric autosome.

A New Genus And Species For Turkish Fauna: Zeiraphera Isertana (Fabricius, 1794) (Lep.: Tortricidae), Mustafa Özdemi̇r, Ayşe Özdem

In this study, Zeiraphera isertana (Fabricius, 1794) is newly recorded among Turkish Tortricidae fauna. This is the first record of the genus Zeiraphera Treirschke, 1829 from Turkey. The specimens were collected from cherry trees in Afyonkarahisar Province during 2008. Collection was done via bait traps used for the control of Tortricidae pest moths. Both male genitalia and imago were depicted.

Thysanoptera Fauna Of The Lakes Region, Turkey, İrfan Tunç, Şeri̇fe Ünal Bahşi̇, Hüseyi̇n Sümbül

The Thysanoptera fauna of the Lakes Region of Turkey was studied in 1990-1992. A total of 3173 specimens from 397 samples were examined. The study revealed 74 Thysanoptera species and 45 of them are new records for the region. Three genera, namely Bregmatothrips Hood, Eremiothrips Priesner, and Iridothrips Priesner; and 5 species, namely Bregmatothrips dimorphus (Priesner), Eremiothrips dubius (Priesner), Eremiothrips taghizadehi (zur Strassen), Iridothrips iridis (Watson), and Mycterothrips annulicornis (Uzel) are new records for the Turkish fauna. A total of 44 molluscan species belonging to 5 classes were identified in 3 transects (including depths of 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 m) located in Kumkuyu, Limonlu, and Erdemli. Overall, no significant difference in community parameters such as diversity index, evenness index, and species richness was found among transects. The species abundance showed seasonal and depth-wise variations. The highest species richness (6-16 species) was encountered between depths of 10 and 100 m in winter and spring, whereas the molluscan population increased in warm seasons due to the high abundance of Corbula gibba and Nucula nitidosa. A New Species Of Tephritis Latreille (Diptera: Tephritidae) From Turkey, Murat Kütük, Nesli̇han Bayrak, Rüstem Hayat

Tephritis ozaslani sp. nov. is described from Artvin Province of Turkey and placed in the T. pulchra species group. The key to the T. pulchra group is provided, which includes 9 species. The main characters that distinguish the new species from the closely resembling Palaearctic species, T. cometa israilis Freidberg, T. acanthiophilopsis Hering, T. erdemlii Kütük, T. divisa Rondani, T. recurrens Loew, T. merzi Freidberg & Kütük, and T. hurvitzi Freidberg, are discussed. In addition, Inula oculus christi L. (Asteraceae) is determined as a host plant of the new species.

Bisexual populations of Ilyocypris inermis Kaufmann, 1900 were reported for the first time from 5 different aquatic bodies in Bolu and Erzincan (Turkey). The males were compared with the males of the other 11 species of the genus Ilyocypris (I. australiensis, I. biplicata, I. decipiens, I. dentifera, I. divisa, I. fallax, I. getica, I. gibba, I. lacustris, I. mongolica, and I. monstrifica) and described based on examinations of the soft body parts (e.g., hemipenis, legs, clasping organs) and valves. Ecological characteristics of habitats where the bisexual populations found were discussed for future studies.

The idiocerine leafhopper genus Busoniomimus Maldonado-Capriles, 1977 is recorded for the first time in China, and a new species, B. hainanensis sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Hainan Province, China. A key to species of the genus Busoniomimus is given, and a checklist of all known species of the genus Busoniomimus is also provided.

In this study, the histopathological changes caused by Montivipera xanthina venom to rat skin, skeletal muscle, and liver tissue were analysed by light microscope. The venom (approximately 2.85 mg/kg) was injected intramuscularly into the gastrocnemius muscle of the rats. The animals were dissected 1, 3, and 6 h after the injection time, and tissue samples were taken. Sections 5 µm thick were taken from paraffin blocks of tissue samples, and the sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin in order to facilitate examination by light microscope. In the present study, the LC_{50} of nickel and its impact on the behaviour of 2 species of freshwater prawns, Macrobrachium lamarrei (H. Milne Edwards) and Macrobrachium dayanum (Henderson) was evaluated. An inverse relationship between LC_{50} values and exposure duration was obtained. Nickel was found to be 6.33 times more toxic to M. lamarrei than to M. dayanum. Nickel exposure increased aggression and loss of balance in both species of prawns in a concentration-dependent manner with both parameters being higher in M. dayanum (416.47 mg/L) than in M. lamarrei (65.77 mg/L). A feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimal dietary crude protein requirement for Rutilus frisii kutum fingerlings. Five isoenergetic experimental diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (32%, 37%, 42%, 47%, and 52%). Triplicate groups of 80 kutum (average weight 0.5 g) were stocked in 250-L tanks and fed to apparent satiation 3 times a day for 8 weeks. The results indicate that the growth performance and feed utilization of kutum were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by dietary protein level. The second polynomial regression of weight gain against protein level yielded an estimated optimal dietary protein requirement of 41.6%. Weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed efficiency increased with increasing the dietary protein level from 32% to 42%, but decreased significantly (P < 0.05) with further increases in dietary protein. The protein efficiency ratio was inversely correlated with dietary protein level. Feed intake was not affected (P > 0.05) by dietary protein level. Tetra Pak containers were evaluated as an alternative to tissue culture flasks for nematode storage. Our data showed that Tetra Pak containers were an excellent alternative to tissue culture flasks for storage of H. bacteriophora and will more than likely be useful for other entomopathogenic nematode species.

Four species of the genus Perigrapha Lederer are reviewed in Iran. Two species, P. annau Varga & Ronkay, 1991 and P. flora Hreblay, 1996, are reported for the first time from the fauna of Iran. Neoechinorhynchus zabensis Amin, Abdullah, and Mhaisen, 2003 was described from Capoeta damascina (Valenciennes, 1842) and Capoeta trutta (Heckel, 1843) in the Greater and Lesser Zab rivers of northern Iraq. It is reported here from C. trutta in the Dez River, Iran, and from Capoeta barroisi Lortet, 1894 (new host record) in the Murat River, Turkey (both are new locality records). Neoechinorhynchus zabensis appears to be restricted to the Tigris-Euphrates basin in Iraq, Turkey, and Iran, where it infects native fishes of the genus Capoeta Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1842 (Cyprinidae). Feeding habits of the Asiatic jackal were studied through 98 scats collected between January 2009 and March 2010 from different sites in Potohar, Pakistan. The overall frequency of occurrence of plant items was 54.0%; the animal prey item frequency was 46.2%. Among the plant foods, Ziziphus was eaten year round, whereas wild olive, grasses, and wheat grains were the chief components of the diet during all seasons except summer. Among the animal food items, livestock carcasses were consumed year round; the highest consumption was observed during the summer and autumn seasons and the lowest in winter. Talpa davidiana is the least known species of the genus Talpa, and the karyotype of this species is still unknown. Its distribution records are also very scattered. The karyological, cranial, and pelvic characteristics of 2 samples from Kızıldağ in Adana Province were analyzed for the first time. It was determined that T. davidiana has 2n = 34, NF = 66, and NFa = 62. The X chromosome was large and metacentric and the Y chromosome was dot-like acrocentric. This paper reports the morphological characteristics of a subadult lynx, Lynx lynx, collected in 2005 from Ardanuç in Artvin Province. Pelage color, hair structure, and some cranial measurements of this specimen and other recent records of Turkish lynxes are given, including that from Beyaz Dağ in Şırnak Province in the southeastern part of Turkey collected during field work and a skin from an unknown locality in Isparta. It was concluded that Turkish lynxes are likely to represent the subspecies L. lynx dinniki based on a comparison of morphometric values given in the literature.

The distribution of Aphanius dispar dispar (Rüppell, 1829) populations in Iran, which are mostly known from the eastern and southern parts of the country, and a new population in western Iran about 50 km northwest of Ilam City and 20 km east of the Iran-Iraq border are recorded. The habitat is an odd environment with sulfide water in a remote area. This is the first report of a population of this species in western Iran and at a latitude this high within its distribution range.

The larval parasitoids and larval diseases of Malacosoma neustria (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) in various host plants were investigated in Erzurum Province, Turkey, during 2004 and 2005. The larval parasitoids were reared in a laboratory, and a total of 29 parasitoid species were established in association with the larvae of M. neustria in the families Tachinidae (Diptera), Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, and Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera). Of the 6 tachinid parasitoids, Pales pavida (Meigen) was the most prevalent species and accounted for 25% of the tachinid records. The Calanoid copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis (G.O. Sars, 1863) is recorded from Turkish inland waters for the first time. Males and females of Eudiaptomus gracilis were consistently found during 6 sampling periods in the Yeşilırmak River. The species was collected from the Yeşilırmak River and Suat Uğurlu and Hasan Uğurlu dam lakes in the Black Sea region and detailed descriptions of both sexes are given.

Metathoracic scent glands (MTGs) of Carpocoris fuscispinus (Boheman, 1851) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were studied in adult females and males. Structures of the glands were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, and the volatile fraction was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. MTGs of C. fuscispinus have many features in common: a large, median reservoir and paired lateral glands opening laterally at each anterior margin forming evaporation areas composed of mushroom-like structures, which are diagnostic for species-level taxonomy. The Thysanoptera fauna of the Aegean region of Turkey was studied in the spring of 1993 and 1995. The surveys were conducted in the following provinces: Afyonkarahisar, Aydın, Denizli, İzmir, Manisa, Muğla, and Uşak. A total of 2899 specimens from 405 samples were examined. The study revealed 82 Thysanoptera species, which included new records for the region and Turkey. Static renewal exposure of various sublethal concentrations of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] produced a deleterious effect on some hematological and biochemical parameters of Cyprinus carpio with the increase in concentration of metal. C. carpio breeders (W = 500 ± 9.5 g; L = 25.60 ± 2.6 cm) were randomly divided into the control group (n = 33) and treated group (n = 198), with 11 breeders/tank (8.84 m3). This paper presents the results of recent field surveys and provides new data on the spider fauna of Turkey. The following 9 taxa are new records for Turkey: Larinia chloris (Audouin, 1826); Macrothele sp.; Arctosa tbilisiensis Mcheidze, 1946; Pisaura consocia (O. P.-Cambridge, 1872); Prodidomus redikorzevi Spassky, 1940; Macaroeris flavicomis (Simon, 1884); Scytodes velutina Heineken & Lowe, 1832; Achaeridion conigerum (Simon, 1914); and Phoroncidia paradoxa (Lucas, 1846). Seasonal variations in the liver and muscle fatty acid composition of Alburnus chalcoides (Güldenstadt, 1772) from Tödürge Lake (Sivas, Turkey) were determined. The most abundant fatty acids in the investigated seasons and tissues were C16:0, C18:0, C18:1 n-9, C18:1 n-7, C20:4 n-6, C20:5 n-3, and C22:6 n-3. The total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) of the liver and muscle were at the highest in the spring (38.59%) and summer (41.65%), respectively. Reproduction Of The Root Vole (Microtus Oeconomus) At The Edge Of Its Distribution Range, Linas Balciauskas, Laima Balciauskiene, Agne Janonyte

Data on the reproduction of the root vole (Microtus oeconomus) in Lithuania, the margin of its geographic range, are presented in the context of litter size analysis. In Lithuania, the breeding season lasts from April until the end of October. The average litter size was 5.93 ± 0.11 (2-14), decreasing from a mean of 8.0 embryos in June to 4.3 in October, with 2-3 litters per year. The average body mass of breeding females was 40.4 ± 0.6 (16.5-77.0) g. However, 6.25% of females start breeding with a body mass of under 25 g. Litter size was found to increase …

First Record Of The Genus Trichopsomyia Williston, 1888 (Diptera: Syrphidae) From Iran, Samad Khaghaninia, Abbas Shakeryari, Rüstem Hayat

The genus Trichopsomyia Williston, 1888 is recorded for the first time from Iran. Trichopsomyia flavitarsis (Meigen, 1822) and T. lucida (Meigen, 1822) were determined based on the material collected from a wetland in Aynali forests in 2010. A key to the species of the genus in northwestern Iran is prepared and photographs of the specimens are provided.
