Este estudio se realizó en un periodo de un año (2007-2008), con el propósito de elaborar una lista de especies de anfibios y reptiles que habitan en cuatro tipos de vegetación: bosque mesófilo de montaña (BMM), bosque de pino-encino (BPE), matorral xerófilo (MX) y bosque tropical perennifolio (BTP) del estado de Hidalgo, y comparar la riqueza de especies entre éstos. Se encontró que el MX fue el tipo de vegetación con la menor riqueza de especies (H = 2.942), mientras que el BMM presentó la mayor de riqueza (H = 3.267). Como parte integral de la evaluación de la calidad ambiental del estado de Hidalgo, este estudio tiene énfasis en los helmintos parásitos de los peces y su uso como bioindicadores de la calidad de agua en Lago de Tecocomulco y Laguna de Metztitlán. Como parte del estudio, se obtuvieron los parámetros ecológicos de la infección para cada especie. Los helmintos son un componente de la biodiversidad, que proveen información sobre la historia natural de los hospederos, y de las relaciones tróficas. El conocimiento de la diversidad de roedores y sus parásitos en Hidalgo es escaso y puntual. Por la amplia distribución de los roedores, su adaptabilidad a los ambientes modificados y por el riesgo zoonótico que representan, es importante conocer la parasitofauna de estos hospederos. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue contribuir al conocimiento de la variación morfológica de G. quieta, y evaluar si los caracteres de presencia ausencia de glándulas perifaringeas y forma de las glándulas mediales son validos para la asignación de ejemplares a una especie. La concentración de plomo (Pb), cadmio (Cd), zinc (Zn), níquel (Ni), hierro (Fe) y aluminio (Al) fue determinada en un céstodo de la familia Dilepididae, parásito de Peromyscus difficilis colectados en una zona rural del Estado de México; con respecto a trabajos previos se obtuvieron valores altos de concentración para Pb y Zn mientras que para Ni sus valores estuvieron por debajo de los valores reportados y el Cd no fue registrado, en lo que respecta al Fe y Al no existen registros de estos metales en céstodos parásitos de organismos terrestres. El estudio de nemátodos parásitos de roedores en el estado de Hidalgo es prácticamente desconocido, solamente se han registrado para la entidad un total de 17 especies. Es por esto que se llevó a cabo una recolecta de roedores silvestres en el municipio de Huehuetla, Hidalgo, con el objetivo de conocer los helmintos que parasitan dichos hospederos. Los hospederos se capturaron con trampas Sherman para su posterior sacrificio y revisión helmintológica. Se registra por primera vez Syphacia sp. en Peromyscus mexicanus (Saussure, 1860) como nuevo hospedero. La importancia de este trabajo es contribuir al conocimiento de los helmintos de Ambystoma velasci Dugés, 1888 del Lago de Tecocomulco, Hidalgo. Griphobilharzia amoena Platt and Blair, 1991 was originally described was originally described as a dioecious trematode, parasitic in the circulatory system of the Australian freshwater crocodile, Crocodylus johnstoni, with the female completely enclosed in a gynecophoric chamber of the male and the two worms orientated anti-parallel to each other. A recent publication questions the original description, arguing that G. amoena is monoecious and, as a consequence, the species was transferred to Vasotrema Stunkard, 1928 (Spirorchiidae) as Vasotrema amoena n. comb. The chiropteran fauna of the Lesser Antilles consists of 27 species. The diversity of this fauna is low when compared with Neotropical faunas of large continental islands or at sites on the adjacent mainland, however, the Lesser Antillean fauna contains 11 species endemic to these islands making it worthy of large-scale conservation efforts. At the southern end of the Lesser Antilles, the biological limit of the Lesser Antillean bat fauna is marked by Koopman’s Line. Two distinct antigenic clusters were previously identified among the H3N2 swine influenza A viruses (IAVs) and were designated H3N2SIV-alpha and H3N2SIV-beta (Feng et al., 2013. Journal of Virology 87(13), 7655–7667). A consistent mutation was observed at the position 189 of hemagglutinin (R189K) between H3N2SIV-alpha and H3N2SIV-beta fair isolates. To evaluate the contribution of R189K mutation to the antigenic drift from H3N2SIV-alpha to H3N2SIV-beta, four reassortant viruses with189R or189K were generated. The antigenic cartography demonstrated that the R189K mutation in the hemagglutinin of H3N2IAV contributed to the antigenicdrift, separating these viruses into H3N2SIV-alpha to H3N2SIV- beta. Twenty-four worms were collected from the bronchioles in both lungs of a male nine-banded armadillo Dasypus novemcinctus Linnaeus, 1758 captured in Teacalco, Morelos, Mexico. The worms, herein named Metathelazia mexicana n. sp., show a constriction in the esophagus at the level of the nerve ring; males of the species have 7 pairs of papillae, fewer than the other species in the genus. Metathelazia capsulata is the most similar species to Metathelazia mexicana; however, the latter has much shorter spicules. This is the fourth species in the genus known to occur in the New World.

The primary sources are reports posted to NEBirds, the Nebraska Listserv, along with the full reports (early and late dates, peak counts for all species) sent by a few faithful reporters around the state. The latter reports are very useful overviews of movements in the reporters' regions. In Nebraska, Greater Sage-Grouse has been considered an uncommon casual winter visitor in the extreme northwest (Sharpe et al. 2001). This species may now be extirpated in Nebraska due to habitat loss. There have been no known Nebraska observations of Greater Sage-Grouse in the last 25 years. The only documented record accepted by the NOURC of Greater Sage-Grouse in Nebraska (Accession #243) is a description of an adult male in September 1987 in extreme northwest Sioux County by Douglas Kapke (Grenon AG. 1990).

Background: Cryptic morphological variation in the Chiropteran genus Myotis limits the understanding of species boundaries and species richness within the genus. Several authors have suggested that it is likely there are unrecognized species-level lineages of Myotis in the Neotropics. This study provides an assessment of the diversity in New World Myotis by analyzing cytochrome-b gene variation from an expansive sample ranging throughout North, Central, and South America. We provide baseline genetic data for researchers investigating phylogeographic and phylogenetic patterns of Myotis in these regions, with an emphasis on South America.

This report provides results and comparisons of two Monitoring Avian Productivity & Survivorship (MAPS) stations operated in central eastern Nebraska. MAPS is a multinational research project managed by the Institute for Bird Populations (IBP) in Point Reyes, CA (http://www.birdpop.org/maps.htm). The project is designed to monitor the population trends and breeding success of breeding birds in North America. Each year, more than 500 participants throughout North America collect data (via the process of bird banding) according to strict protocols and then submit their data to IBP for analysis and interpretation. This summer most of Nebraska was very dry, with "Exceptional Drought" everywhere but the extreme southeast, according to the United States Department of Agriculture's Drought Monitor (http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu). Although no really striking effects were noted, several bits of evidence attested to the difficult conditions. Wetlands dried up in most cases in the Rainwater Basin, reflected by a lack of Great Egrets, Cattle Egrets, and Black-necked Stilts, and there were no stilt nests reported. However, Yellow-crowned Night-Herons surprisingly staged an incursion, perhaps continuing to disperse northward from their customary haunts in the almost equally dry Kansas and Oklahoma.
