Invertebrate Fauna Of Devils Den, A Sandstone Cave In Northwestern Arkansas, Stewart B. Peck, James H. Peck Jan 1982

Invertebrate Fauna Of Devils Den, A Sandstone Cave In Northwestern Arkansas, Stewart B. Peck, James H. Peck

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The same invertebrate fauna of 17 species was found in Devils Den Cave, Washington County, Arkansas, in 1969 and 1979. The fauna consists of 1 trogloxene, 14 troglophiles, and 2 troglobites, a spider, Porrhomma cavernicolum, and a collembolan, Pseudosinella dubia. Devils Den Cave has a well developed cavernicolous fauna, although it is in sandstone which generally supports a poor cave adapted fauna. The troglobites probably evolved in the vicinity of northwestern Arkansas in limestone caves or in deep forest soils of the Ozark region. They then dispersed overland, perhaps as recently as the late Wisconsinan, to occupy this sandstone cave.

Warmwater Fish Community Of A Cool Tailwater In Arkansas, Richard A. Frietsche Jan 1982

Warmwater Fish Community Of A Cool Tailwater In Arkansas, Richard A. Frietsche

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A diverse warmwater fish community has persisted in the Lake Greeson tailwater, despite hydropower releases of cold hypolimnetic water. Forty-eight species of fish were collected by electrofishing in the upper 16.1 km of the tailwater. Hydropower releases have reduced the abundance of some of the warmwater sport fish in the upper tailwater, and their populations are probably maintained in part by recruitment from downstream. Angling effort has been diverted from the warmwater sport fish populations to a put-and-take trout fishery.

Reported Animal Rabies In Arkansas: 1950-1981, Gary A. Heidt Jan 1982

Reported Animal Rabies In Arkansas: 1950-1981, Gary A. Heidt

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Reported animal rabies in Arkansas is reviewed for the years 1950-81 . Total cases ranged from 44 in 1969 to 332 in 1979, with a mean of 154. Domestic animals accounted for 72.5% of the total cases until 1961-63 and then declined to 15.8% from 1964-81. This switch from domestic to wildlife rabies corresponded to a similar trend in nationally reported rabies and was probably due to increased public awareness and the vaccination of domestic dogs and cats. Over the 31 year period a total of 18 species of mammals has been implicated in reported rabies (individual species of foxes, …

Leaf Processing In A Slough Of An Ozark Stream, Don F. Petty, Arthur V. Brown Jan 1982

Leaf Processing In A Slough Of An Ozark Stream, Don F. Petty, Arthur V. Brown

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Processing of sugar maple (Acer saccharum), black oak (Quercus velutina), and American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) was investigated in a slough of the Illinois River, Benton County, Arkansas, using 5-gram packs in wire baskets. Oak and sycamore showed similar degradation rates, while maple was processed much faster. All processing rates were strongly retarded during a period of siltation. Chironomid larvae were the dominant organisms associated with the packs and their numbers were depressed by the silt influx. Shredders were notably few in number as compared with studies from the northwestern United States.

River Otter In Arkansas: Ii. Indications Of A Beaver-Facilitated Commensal Relationship, C. Renn Tumlison, Mark R. Karnes, Anthony W. King

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Dam building activities of beaver (Castor canadensis) create ponds that apparently augment habitat available to otter (Lutra canadensis). This paper considers possible effects of beaver activity and pond formation on distribution and populations of otter in Arkansas. Literature synthesis and analysis of harvest records were used to investigate the suspected relationship.

River Otter In Arkansas: I. Distribution And Harvest Trends, C. Renn Tumlison, Anthony W. King, Lew Johnston

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

River otter (Lutra canadensis) management in Arkansas is hampered by a lack of information on population parameters. This initial study on the biology of Arkansas river otter is concerned with present distribution and harvest trends. Otter occur throughout Arkansas, except in the upper Ozark region. A distributional shift, apparently along the Arkansas River, has led to an increase in otter harvest in the Ouachita Mountain region. A dramatic increase in otter harvest over the past four years (1976-1979) is attributable, in part, to a pelt price increase. Additionally, nuisance level beaver (Castor canadensis) populations and an extended trapping season for …

Biology Of The Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis, In Beaver Reservoir, Arkansas, Raj V. Kilambi, Alex Zdinak Jr.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Growth, length-weight relationship, maturation and food habits of striped bass from Beaver Reservoir were studied. No significant difference in growth in length between sexes was found. Growth of the Beaver Reservoir striped bass was similar to that of anadromous and freshwater populations. Males and females showed significant difference in length-weight relationship, and females exhibited isometric growth. The gonosomatic indices (GSI) of males ranged from 4.50 to 7.09 and were classified as mature fish. Female striped bass with GSI of 2.62 and above had three size groups of ova and were considered as maturing and mature. The food was primarily composed …

Maturation, Spawning Period, And Fecundity Of The White Crappie, Pomoxis Annularis Rafinesque, In Beaver Reservoir, Arkansas, Janet L. Thomas, Raj V. Kilambi Jan 1981

Maturation, Spawning Period, And Fecundity Of The White Crappie, Pomoxis Annularis Rafinesque, In Beaver Reservoir, Arkansas, Janet L. Thomas, Raj V. Kilambi

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Gonosomatic indices and ovum diameter frequency distributions showed that the Beaver Reservoir white crappie spawns from late April through May. During the spawning season females release eggs more than once. Various stages of ovarian ovum development were described. Sexual maturity was found in 2-year-old females of 197 mm and 3-year-old and older fish. Regression analyses of fecundity on total length, weight and age of white crappie indicated that the fish weight was the best predictor of fecundity.

Comparison Of The Lens Protein Profiles Of Three Species Of Ozark Salamanders, James M. Britton Jan 1979

Comparison Of The Lens Protein Profiles Of Three Species Of Ozark Salamanders, James M. Britton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The vertebrate lens has a high protein content (35%), 80-90% of which is composed of the soluble, lens-specific structural proteins, the crystallins. The lens protein profiles of urodelan species have been found to be qualitatively distinct. On this basis the lens proteins have been proposed as a measure of true speciation in urodelans. This paper is the result of our effort to derive a technique for comparison of lens protein profiles on a purely qualitative basis without utilizing the complex methodology employed by previous workers. With this object in mind, the lens protein profiles of Plethodon glutinosus, Ambystoma annulatum, and …

Electrophoretic Analysis Of Blood Serum Proteins In Three Species Of Water Snakes (Genus Nerodia), Phyllis J. Garnett Jan 1979

Electrophoretic Analysis Of Blood Serum Proteins In Three Species Of Water Snakes (Genus Nerodia), Phyllis J. Garnett

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Serum from three species of water snakes (Nerodia rhombifera, N. erythrogaster and N. fasciata) from one geographic region was analyzed electrophoretically on cellulose acetate, and anodic mobility and relative concentration of the fractions were determined by a recording densitometer with an automatic integrator. Classification of fractions was based on mobility (Rf, values), and for identification purposes, bands were labeled in order of decreasing mobility (albumin and alpha₁, alpha₂, alpha₃, beta₁, beta₂, gamma₁, and gamma₂ globulins). Seven fractions were identified in each species with alpha₃ being absent from N. rhombifera and N. erythrogaster, and only one gamma fraction was observed in …

Genic Variation In White-Tailed Deer From Arkansas, Phyllis K. Price, Michael E. Cartwright, Mitchell J. Rogers Jan 1979

Genic Variation In White-Tailed Deer From Arkansas, Phyllis K. Price, Michael E. Cartwright, Mitchell J. Rogers

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Liver and kidney samples of 33 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) representing three populations in Arkansas were examined with horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Of 17 loci examined, only PGM-1 and ES-2 exhibited polymorphism. Average individual heterozygosity, ranging from 2.3% to 4.7% with a mean of 3.1 %, was much lower than that reported for white-tailed deer in other parts of its range. The three populations examined in this study were highly similar based on Rogers' genetic similarity coefficient.

Age And Huddling As Determinants Of Metabolic Rate In Grasshopper Mice (Onychomys Leucogaster), Meredith Bailey, Dennis A. Baeyens, Lana Mann Jan 1979

Age And Huddling As Determinants Of Metabolic Rate In Grasshopper Mice (Onychomys Leucogaster), Meredith Bailey, Dennis A. Baeyens, Lana Mann

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The metabolic rates of grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster) were determined every third day from birth to adulthood. Metabolic rates were quantitated by measuring oxygen consumption in an open circuit system. There was a rapid fall in oxygen consumption from the third day after birth until the ninth day. Mice which were housed separately assumed a constant metabolic rate at an earlier age than mice which were kept with litter-mates. The greatest increases in metabolism occurred when immature mice were separated from litter-mates for oxygen consumption determinations. It is concluded that huddling plays an important role in reducing the metabolic rate …

Maturation And Fecundity Of Redear Sunfish, James C. Adams, Raj V. Kilambi

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Based on gonosomatic indices and ovum diameter frequency distributions, the redear sunfish spawns from May through July. Fast growing 2-year-old (above 150 mm) and older fish attain sexual maturity. Mature ovum diameter ranged from 0.60 to 1.30 mm. Fecundity • total length, • total weight, and • age relationships were: 1nF = 5.95242 + 0.01967L (r²= 0.90), LnF = 8.80328 + 0.00594W (r²= 0.92), and 1nF = 8.19332 + 0.50231 A (r² =0.83), respectively.

Effect Of Turf Fungicides On Earthworms, J. H. Roark, J. L. Dale Jan 1979

Effect Of Turf Fungicides On Earthworms, J. H. Roark, J. L. Dale

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Numerous turf fungicides were tested under various conditions for possible deleterious effects upon the earthworm Eisenla foetida. Earthworms treated by immersion for one minute in 0.1% solutions of 10 different fungicides died insignificant numbers after benomyl and thiophanate methyl treatments. After 1% fungicide treatments, there was significant mortality from benomyl, ethazole, Kromad, and thiophanate methyl fungicides. With 2% fungicide solutions, significant numbers died after benomyl, cadmium succinate, ethazole, thiophanate methyl, and thiram treatments. Earthworms fed bermudagrass clippings treated with 10 different fungicides showed a significant decrease in longevity from clippings treated with benomyl, dinocap, ethazole, and thiophanate methyl. Earthworms reared …
