According to the benthic studies on echinoderms inhabiting the coasts of Turkey, a total of 91 echinoderm species belonging to 5 classes have been reported. The Aegean Sea coast is represented by the highest number of species (76 species), followed by the Sea of Marmara (64 species), the Levantine Sea (51 species), and the Black Sea (17 species). Sixty-six echinoderm species were found on soft substrata, while 8 species were reported on hard substrata and 17 species on both soft and hard substrata. The current status of marine fishes distributed along the Turkish coasts is reviewed and an updated checklist including 512 species is presented. The occurrence of a total of 61 marine tetrapod species is presented in this paper, including 3 sea turtles, 43 sea birds, and 15 marine mammals. Distribution of each reported species along the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean, and Levantine coasts of Turkey is mentioned, associated with key references.

The present work reports on the effects of low pH values on the mortality of 3 freshwater zooplankton available in the freshwater ponds of Midnapore district. Acute bioassay tests on Daphnia lumholtzi, Moina brachiata, and Heliodiaptomus viduus to varying acidic pH levels of water were performed in the laboratory using serial grades of hydrochloric acid solution. Among the 3 genera, M. brachiata was found to respond sharply to acid stress in a 1-h assay, since 100% mortality was achieved at pH 5.79 (2.347 mM HCl), as compared to H. viduus, which showed 100% death in 1 h only below pH …

Comparison Of Two Morphometric Methods For Discriminating Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.) Populations In Turkey, Ayça Özkan Koca, İrfan Kandemi̇r

In this study, we compared 2 different methodologies (traditional morphometrics, TM, and geometric morphometrics, GM) in order to determine their ability to discriminate the honey bee populations distributed throughout Turkey. In TM, 16 morphometric characters were measured from the forewings of different honey bee populations from Turkey. A total of 20 landmarks were utilized for the GM analysis. Multivariate statistical analysis of data obtained from the 2 methodologies showed that GM was more successful (81.5%) than TM (70.4%). A new species of the spider genus Harpactea Bristowe, 1939 is described from pine forests in Antalya Province, in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The new species resembles H. abantia (Simon, 1884) known from Greece, but differs in a number of characters. Detailed morphological description and illustrations of the new species are provided on the basis of both sexes.

Hybridisation Or Vocal Mimicry? A Case Of A Mixed Singing River Warbler Locustella Fluviatilis In Eastern Poland, Michal Polakowski, Monika Broniszewska, Lukasz Jankowiak, Tomasz Cofta

The unusual mixed song of a River Warbler (Locustella fluviatilis) was recorded in eastern Poland. The identified male used 2 types of songs recalling the River Warbler and the Grasshopper Warbler (Locustella naevia) alternately, which was confirmed by the interpretation of the sonograms. The most likely explanation of this unusual song is vocal mimicry, caused by the exposure of the recorded individual to the song of the Grasshopper Warbler in its acoustic environment at an early stage of its life.

The genus Acomys is represented by 19 species in a vast area in the African and eastern Mediterranean regions. Acomys cilicicus, belonging to the genus Acomys, is an endemic species in Turkey. In this study, by evaluating the reproductive data in laboratory conditions and the natural habitat of A. cilicicus, the reproductive biology of the species was researched in detail for the first time. Gammarus Baysali Sp. Nov., A New Freshwater Amphipod Species From Turkey (Amphipoda: Gammaridae), Murat Özbek, Levent Yurga, Okan Külköylüoğlu

A new species of freshwater amphipod, Gammarus baysali sp. nov., collected from Cumayanı Cave (Zonguldak Province, Turkey) is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the Gammarus pulex-group. The most discriminant characters of this species are the minute eyes, densely setose fifth peduncle and flagellar segments of antenna 2, elongated pereopods, and setose anterior margins of pereopod 5 to 7. Additionally, the palp of right maxilla 1 has 4 setae along its outer margin. A detailed morphological description and illustrations of the new species are provided, and differences from related species are discussed.

The family Otopheidomenidae Treat, 1955 is recorded for the first time from Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula on the basis of a new species, Nabiseius arabicus sp. nov. Adult females, collected from Cynodon dactylon L. (Poaceae) in association with thrips (Insecta: Thysanoptera), are described and illustrated. A key to world species of Nabiseius is provided.

The Carabidae family (Coleoptera) is among the dominant groups of terrestrial predators and includes more than 40,000 species worldwide, making it one of the largest families of beetles. The fauna of Carabidae in Azarbaijan, Iran, is very diverse and has not been studied thoroughly. In the following paper, this group of beneficial predators is studied, using samples taken through 2007-2010 across Azarbaijan. Species belonging to 12 subfamilies were collected from 24 different localities. Among this diverse fauna, 3 species, Broscus cephalotes (Linnaeus, 1758), Harpalus (Pseudoophonus) calceatus (Duftschmid, 1812), and Amara (Xenocelia) ingenua Duftschmid, 1812 are new records for Iranian fauna.

The growth and reproduction of brown comber (Serranus hepatus Linnaeus, 1758) were studied using specimens collected from the central Aegean Sea between July 2004 and June 2007. A total of 2410 specimens were analyzed, and of those, 2290 individuals were mature and 120 individuals were juvenile. Analyses covered all individuals because the species is a simultaneous hermaphrodite. The length-weight relationship was determined as W = 0.013L^{3.11}, indicating a positive allometric growth for all samples. Although water level fluctuations and related environmental variations occurring within reservoirs have a considerable effect on the zooplankton community, studies on zooplankton dynamics of reservoirs are very limited. In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the diurnal vertical migration of zooplankton in relation to the concentration of physicochemical factors and chlorophyll a content in a recently formed water reservoir (Tahtalı Reservoir, Kocaeli, northwestern Turkey). We investigated the effects of threats on breeding waterbirds in the Gediz Delta, Turkey. Breeding Bird Surveys were conducted in 2002 and 2006. The survey area comprised 305 UTM grids of 1 × 1 km^2. Populations and distributions of breeding birds were compared between 2002 and 2006 for the UTM grids under threat and without any threat using paired samples t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and GIS. Urbanization, industrialization, pollution, overgrazing, disturbance, and illegal reed cutting and burning were identified in 151 (49.5%) of 305 grids in 2002. Troughs are artificially transformed natural springs, underground waters, or related habitats. Some effects of such transformation are mentioned in a few studies, but there has been no extensive study on species composition and diversity in troughs. To contribute to the knowledge on the ostracods in troughs, we examined ostracod composition and diversity in 105 troughs from 6 provinces (Bolu, Erzincan, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Ordu, Van) in Turkey. The present study quantifies the concentrations of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids in the hemolymph, ovary, hepatopancreas, and muscle of Fenneropenaeus merguiensis and F. penicillatus during ovarian maturation. Proteins were the major constituent in the hemolymph and ovaries of the 2 species, while lipids were the major constituent in the hepatopancreas. The protein, carbohydrate, and lipid contents in the ovaries of both species increased as ovaries matured. The increase in the protein, carbohydrate, and lipid contents in the ovaries during maturation indicates that the ovaries utilize these constituents to mature. The Myrmeleontidae fauna of Albania was studied in July of 2012. The study revealed 14 antlion species, which included new records for the country. Among collected species, Myrmeleon hyalinus Olivier, 1811, Euroleon nostras (Geoffroy in Fourcroy, 1785), Macronemurus appendiculatus (Latreille, 1807), Macronemurus bilineatus Brauer, 1868, and Neuroleon arenarius (Navás, 1904) are new records for the Albanian fauna. Sand dune habitat in the national park Divjakë Karavasta represents the northernmost known locality of Myrmeleon hyalinus in the Balkan Peninsula.

A study of the sea spiders found in Mersin Bay, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, revealed 5 species belonging to 2 families (Ammotheidae and Phoxichilidiidae), which are new records for the region: Ammothella longipes (Hodge, 1864), A. appendiculata (Dohrn, 1881), Tanystylum orbiculare Wilson, 1878, T. conirostre (Dohrn, 1881), and A. pygmaeus (Hodge, 1864). Arrenurus (Truncaturus) corsicus (E. Angelier, 1951) is newly recorded for the Turkish fauna. It can be easily distinguished from other Truncaturus species by the pedipalpal femur with numerous hair-like setae medially, elongated idiosoma, and anterior coxae extending beyond anterior idiosoma margin.

We studied, for the first time, the age structure of Eremias strauchi strauchi (Kessler, 1878) from a sample (18 adults) of a population living in the vicinity of Iğdır (eastern Turkey) using the skeletochronological method. The maximum observed longevity was 7 years for males and 5 years for females. The age of males ranged from 4 to 7 years (mean 4.91, n = 12), while that of females ranged from 4 to 5 years (mean 4.66, n = 6). New Distributional Data For The Genera Empis Linnaeus And Rhamphomyia Meigen (Diptera: Empididae) In The Marmara Region With New Records From Turkey, Mustafa Cemal Çi̇ftçi̇, Abdullah Hasbenli̇

This study is based on Empis and Rhamphomyia (Diptera: Empididae) specimens collected from the Marmara Region between the years 2008 and 2010. Out of a total of 28 species that were found in this study, 14 species are new records for the Turkish fauna. Distributions of these species in Turkey have been mapped, and the Palaearctic distributions were given. Geographic distributions of all species are further discussed.

This study is based upon material of the family Dermestidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 1965 and 2012. The study resulted in the recording for the Turkish fauna of 28 species of 6 genera belonging to 3 subfamilies (Attageninae, Dermestinae, Megatominae) within the family Dermestidae. Among them, Attagenus unicolor unicolor (Brahm, 1791), Anthrenus scrophulariae scrophulariae (Linnaeus, 1758), and Anthrenus goliath Saulcy in Mulsant & Rey, 1868 have been found to be the most abundant and widespread species. Fatty acid profiles of total, neutral, and polar lipids in the liver, muscle, and intestine of female individuals of Vimba vimba (L., 1758) were determined by gas chromatography. C16:0, C16:1 n-7, C18:1 n-7, and C18:1 n-9 were the most abundant fatty acids in total and neutral lipids in all tissues investigated. In addition to these acids, C20:4 n-6 (arachidonic acid) and C22:6 n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid) were the other fatty acids having high percentages in the polar lipid fraction of the tissues. In this paper we summarize the knowledge on earthworm diversity in the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina Mountains) based on new findings and published data in order to establish the first list of known earthworm taxa from the entire area of the Balkan Mountains.
