This study was performed at Lakes Erikli, Hamam, Mert, Pedina and Saka (İğneda, Kırklareli) in 1999. Materials collected seasonally from the 20 stations were evaluated. The 24 species (Candona neglecta, Fabaeformiscandona fabaeformis, Pseudocandona compressa, Pseudocandona hartwigi, Pseudocandona marchica, Candonopsis kingsleii, Cypria ophtalmica, Physocypria kraepelini, Ilyocypris biplicata, Ilyocypris monstrifica, Cypris bispinosa, Eucypris inflata, Eucypris virens, Psychrodromus olivaceus, Heterocypris incongruens, Heterocypris salina, Cyprinotus inaequivalvis, Cypridopsis vidua, Limnocythere inopinata, Limnocythere stationis, Cyprideis torosa, Callistocythere diffusa, Pontocythere bacescoi and Urocythereis margaritifera) belonging to 18 genera were recorded. Karyotype Of Eptesicus Serotinus (Schreber, 1774) In Turkey (Mammalia: Chiroptera), Nursel Aşan

In order to investigate the conventional karyotype of Eptesicus serotinus (Schreber, 1774) in Turkey, four specimens were karyotyped. It was determined that the diploid number was 2n=50, the number of autosomal arms was FN=50, the X chromosome was large submetacentric, and the Y chromosome was dot-like acrocentric and the smallest chromosome of the set. All of the autosomes were acrocentric. A secondary constriction on a medium-sized acrocentric pair was encountered in most of the metaphase spreads examined.

In this study, the status of the sea turtle population of Belek Beach, which is within the boundaries of Antalya province, was investigated during the 1996 and 1997 breeding seasons. 153 nests were recorded, 134 of which hatched (87.6%) and from these nests 6295 hatchlings were able to reach the sea in 1996. 168 nests were recorded in 1997, 136 of which hatched (80.9%) and from these nests 7082 hatchlings were able to reach the sea. The nest density was recorded as 9.1 nests/kilometer in 1996 and as 9.9 nests/kilometer in 1997. The average clutch size was 78 for both …

This study was performed to determine the Ostracoda fauna of the Black Sea coasts of Turkey. The material collected from 34 stations in June, July, and August of 1995 was evaluated and classified. Chromosome numbers and karyotypes of Cyprinid fish Capoeta trutta and Capoeta capoeta umbla (Cyprinidae) in the Tigris River were determined by the use of chromosome preparation techniques from uncultured kidney. The diploid chromosome number in C. trutta was found to be 2n = 150, with 35 pairs of meta-submetacentric chromosomes, 40 pairs of subtelo-acrocentric chromosomes and the chromosome arms number (NF) was 220. Chromosomal studies on the C. c. umbla revealed the diploid chromosome number to be 2n = 150, with 43 pairs of meta-submetacentric chromosomes, 32 pairs of subtelo-acrocentric chromosomes with NF = 236. The faunistic study was carried out in Balıkesir province between 1996-1997 and 50 Tabanidae species were determined. The total number of species reported from the province by previous studies and this study reached 57. Twenty-four of these species are the first records for this province. Five species are from Chrysopsinae, and the rest of them are from Tabaninae.

In this study, eleven different actinosporean types belonging to the collective groups synactinomyxon, aurantiactinomyxon, echinactinomyxon, raabeia and siedleckiella were observed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) for the first time. The results obtained showed that surface structures and their ornamentation on the spore body and branches seen on the caudal processes of actinosporean spores are of importance in determination of the spores, at least at the collective group level.

Ostracod (Crustacea) Fauna Of Lake Eğirdir (Isparta), Oya Özuluğ, Nerdi̇n Kubanç, Di̇nçer Gülen

In this study, the materials collected from 30 stations at different locations at Lake Eğirdir were evaluated. According to the results, a total of 12 species belonging to 11 genera of the superfamilies Darwinulidacea and Cypridacea were determined. Of these, Potomocypris variegata (Brady & Norman, 1889) is a new record from Anatolia. At the same time, the parthenogenetic populations of Plesiocypridopsis newtoni (Brady & Robertson, 1870) are reported from Anatolia in this study for the first time.

In this faunistic study carried out in the Anatolian part of Çanakkale province, 40 Tabanidae species distributed in the area were determined. Previous studies carried out in this province reported 31 species. Overall, 52 species belonging to Pangoninae, Chrysopsinae and Tabaninae subfamilies have been determined to date. Twenty-one of these species are first records for the province and Silvius latifrons graecus Chv., Mch., & Lyn., is a first record for Turkey as well.

Rediscovery of the land-snail Sesteria gallandi Bourguignat, 1884 is reported. The original description was based on only one empty shell, which later was lost and never found again, and the exact type locality in Turkey was unknown. Now we found this species in Mardin Province near the village of Sariköy on the Cizre - İdil - Midyat road 20 km after İdil in the forest, in May 2000.

This study was conducted at Lake Eğirdir in the summer (July), autumn (September), winter (February) and spring (April) of 1997. The materials collected from 41 stations were analysed and 19 species (Ilyocypris biplicata, Ilyocypris bradyi, Ilyocypris gibba, Candona neglecta, Cypris pubera, Prionocypris zenkeri, Eucypris inflata, Eucypris virens, Heterocypris incongruens, Cyprinotus inaequivalvis, Cypria ophtalmica, Physocypria kraepelini, Cypridopsis hartwigi, Cypridopsis vidua, Plesiocypridopsis newtoni, Potamocypris varigeata, Psychrodromus olivaceus, Darwinula stevensoni and Limnocythere inopinata) belonging to 15 genera were recorded. Cypridopsis hartwigi is a new record for the Ostracoda fauna of Turkey.

A total of 523 C. gariepinus caught in the River Asi were surveyed from October, 1996 to September, 1998 to find out the age distribution throughout the population that varied between 0+ and 5 years of age, with the one year age group observed to be dominant in number. Findings also showed that both sexes started to reach maturity at the age of 1, and all the fishes examined had become mature by the end of the second year. To establish a seed production technique for Black Sea turbot, Scophthalmus maximus, eggs and larvae were observed under artificial rearing conditions. Larvae were obtained artificially from eggs of tank-held broodstock. The egg fertilization was 27.6% and the fertilized eggs were 1.213±0.063 mm in diameter, were spherical pelagic and had one oil globule. From an initial length of 3.12±0.14 mm on day 0, the larvae grown to 167.28±15.32 mm in the normal group and to 159.98±12.25 mm in the abnormal group on day 246. Natural food items of catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822) were investigated in the River Asi from September 1996 to October 1998. Analyses of stomach contents showed that the catfish feed basically on Arthropoda, mostly Diptera larvae, and on plant materials to a considerable extent. A successful filter feeding was observed, especially during the summer period.

In this study, the water chemistry and zooplankton community of Lake Mogan studied between March 1997 and April 1998. Small-scale industries, crop-farming, urban settlement of the municipality of Gölbaşı with the untreated raw sewage effluent and recreational activities are examples of the human impact within the catchment and the lake, leading to high loading of DIN and TP into the lake via the inflows. In this study, the hibernation of ground squirrels ( Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) distributed in Central Anatolia were studied in laboratory and field conditions. According to our findings, the hibernation period of ground squirrels began at the end of August and terminated in mid February. The longest and shortest hibernation bouts of ground squirrels were found to be 100 and 21 days, respectively. In this period, the longest ununterrupted hibernation was 13 days. Ground squirrels gained weight during the early months of summer and then lost weight constantly throughout hibernation period. No marked periodic cycles were observed in the periods of weight …

The longitudinal and seasonal distribution of macroinvertebrates and the physical and chemical variables of Yuvarlak Stream in the Köycegiz-Dalyan Protected Area in South-Western Turkey were studied between April 1992 and April 1993. The diversity, frequency, dominance, abundance and similarity of macroinvertebrates through the year were recorded. In addition, the Belgian Biotic Index was used as a biological criterion for the assessment of water quality for the first time in Turkey. This investigation was carried out for the determination of fish species living in Edremit Bay (Aegean Sea). Morphometric and meristic characters of fishes caught by trawl and various nets from five stations determined in Edremit Bay in the years 1996- 1997 were examined. Some morphological and ecological properties, local names and distributions to stations of 68 determined species are given. These species are new records for Edremit Bay of Aegean Sea.

This study was undertaken to determine the freshwater Isopod fauna of Turkish Thrace. Samples were collected during the years 1985-1987, 1989-1992 and 1994-1997. According to the results, Asellus (Asellus) aquaticus(L.) Racovitza, Asellus (Asellus) hilgendorfiBovallius, Asellus (Proasellus) infirmus Birstein belonging to the genus Asellus of the Asellidae family and Jaera (Jaera) sarsi Valkanov belonging to the genus Jaeraof the Janiridae family were determined. Of the species, Asellus (Asellus) hilgendorfi Bovallius, Asellus (Proasellus) infirmus Birstein and Jaera (Jaera) sarsi Valkanov are new records for Turkey. The worldwide distributions of these species are included.

Balantidium spp. living in the digestive system of Rana ridibunda in Van were determined. Five species belonging to the genus Balantidiumwere distinguished. Of these, one new species was recognized, described as Balantidium vanensisn. sp. This study reports for the first time the presence of B. helenae, B. claperedei and B. giganteumin the digestive system of R. ridibunda. These species are also new records for the protozoan fauna of Turkey. There was only B. duodeni in the duodenum and B. elongatum in the intestinal part next to the duodenum. In the course of examining rumen contents obtained from 30 domestic cattle ( Bos taurus L.) in the vicinity of İzmir, Turkey, somewhat similar but unusual forms of epidinia were observed. These ciliated protozoa were observed in six of the animals with a frequency of 20.00%, and this study is concerned with their classification into a species, Epidinium graini n. sp. Some Reproduction Characteristics Of Capoeta Tinca (Heckel, 1843) Living In The Oltu Stream Of Çoruh Basin, Ayhan Yildirim, M. Sitki Aras

913 specimens of Capoeta tinca (Heckel, 1843) were analysed in Oltu Stream-Çoruh Basin from August, 1994 to July, 1996. It was determined that the age distribution in the population varied between I and XII, but age group III was dominant in number. The sexual maturity of specimens in the population were complete at the age of II in males and III in females, and they spawned between May and July when water temperature was 16°C. Fecundity was on average 5561±833 eggs/female and was related to fork length, total weight, age and gonad weight.

Oxalic acid is a widely occurring natural product of animals, plants and other organisms. It sometimes occurs as a free acid, but more commonly as a calcium salt. Organisms exhibit various levels of oxalate content which even show fluctuations among the organs of the same individual. Although oxalate seems to engage in the metabolism and adaptation of animals, plants and fungi, its mechanism is far from being completely understood. A Histochemical Study Of The Origin Regions Of The Triceps Muscle Of The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Fati̇me Geyi̇koğlu, Abdullah Özkaral

The muscle fibers in the origin regions of the triceps muscle of Passer domesticuswere characterized histochemically on the basis of their myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (mATPase) activity after acidic and alkaline preincubations. Muscle fibers were identified as type II (alkaline-stable/acid-labile mATPase activity) and type III (alkaline-stable/acid-stable mATPase activity). The number of type II fibers was higher in the muscle studied (83%) and this was found to be significant.

TVB-N (total volatile basic nitrogen) concentration in fish muscle was used as an index of freshness quality to compare the spoilage of rainbow trout wrapped in cling film and in aluminium foil. TVB-N levels in different muscle tissue and in the whole fish were measured every two days for a period of 16 days at 4-6°C. In addition, three different methods of determining of TVB-N were evaluated in terms of sensitivity, reliability, speed, and cost.
