Turkish Journal of Zoology
Thirty-five microcrustacean taxa, comprising 21 species of cladocerans, eight species and one subspecies of copepods, and five species of ostracods were identified from Lake Sazlıgöl during a 17-month research period in 1998-1999. Of these species, Eucypris ornata (Müller, 1776) (Ostracoda) was recorded as new species for the freshwater fauna of Turkey.

A Study On The Ornithofauna Of Sakaryabaşı/Eminekin Pond And Its Vicinity, Azi̇z Aslan, İlhami̇ Ki̇zi̇roğlu

The study was carried out to determine the ornithofauna of Eminekin Pond and its vicinity in Sakaryabaşı, within the district of Çifteler in Eskişehir province. The study area is situated on one of the migration routes of birds. During the study period, from July 1995 to July 1996, a total of 102 bird species from 37 families were observed in the area and 37 of these species were resident, ten of them were winter visitors, forty six were summer visitors and only nine were found to be passage migrants.

Turkey is one of the richest countries in terms of the Chilopoda fauna. However, knowledge of the Chilopoda fauna of some parts of Anatolia is still limited, particularly of Central Anatolia. This study is based on Chilopoda samples collected from two different localities in the city of Eskişehir. Four species belonging to four genera were determined.

The Parasitoids Of Yponomeuta Malinellus Zeller (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) In Sivas, Lütfi̇ye Gençer

The objective of this study was to determine parasitoids attacking the apple ermine moth (Yponomeuta malinellus Zeller) in Sivas. Ten parasitoid species belonging to hymenopteran families of Ichneumonidae, Eulophidae, Encrytidae and Elasmidae and a dipteran family Tachinidae were found. Parasitoid guilds, their effect on the population of Yponomeuta malinellus and their importance in biological control are discussed.

A check list of Hydrophilidae species known in Turkey is presented for the first time. In addition, their distributions in Turkey are given. Fifty-four species are determined. Of these, Hydrophilus atterimus Eschscholtz, 1822, a new record for the Turkish fauna, is reviewed and compared with H. piceus (Linnaeus, 1758).

A Study On Micromys Minitus (Pallas, 1771) (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Turkish Thrace, Beytullah Özkan, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak

Micromys minutus was recorded from six localities in Turkish Thrace. The external, cranial and karyological peculiarities of the specimens were determined. The dorsal colour of the specimens is dark brownish, being lighter on the sides, but the rostrum and cheek are markedly ochre. Mean tail length relative to body length is 90.5%, and the occipito-nasal length is 18.1 mm. The diploid number of chromosomes was 2n = 68 with NF = 136 and NFa = 132.

A Study On Apodemus Iconicus Heptner, 1948 (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Turkey, Ercüment Çolak

The karyological, bacular and phallic aspects of Apodemus iconicus Heptner, 1948, in Turkey were examined for the first time. The diploid number of chromosomes was 2n = 48, the number of autosomal arms was NFa = 46, and the fundamental number was NF = 48. The X chromosome was large acrocentric, and the Y chromosome was small acrocentric. The baculum was composed of a distal and proximal part, the average length of which was 3.74 mm. The phallus showed two notches near the crater, and a groove extending along the phallus on the ventral side.

Animals were assigned to four age groups according to molar wear, field notes and external and cranial measurements. Six days-old animals were referred to newborn, up to 30 days as young and thereafter as adult; animals with very worn molars were considered old. In addition to the statistical differences among age groups, it was determined that the main morphological differences were in the interorbital constriction, the shape of the braincase, the ridges and the position of occipital condyles. The distribution and abundance of cockroaches were investigated in six hospitals in Trabzon. A total of 4756 (692 females, 652 males and 3412 nymphs) cockroaches were caught between 1^{st} October 1999 and 30^{th} January 2000. It was found that three cockroach species were present in hospitals. Of these, Blattella germanica was the predominant species with 98.25%, followed by Blatta orientalis (1.12%) and Periplaneta americana (0.63%). Although the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, was found in all areas of the hospitals, Blatta orientalis and Periplaneta americana were only caught in kitchens. A total of 470 frogs were examined for helminth infection: 220 specimens of the green toad Bufo viridis, 65 of Savigny's tree frog Hyla savignyi and 185 of the Levantine frog Rana bedriagae. Six species of adult platyhelminths (trematodes, monogeneans and cestodes) were found to infest the three frog species: two monogeneans, Polystoma integerrimum (23%) and Polystoma viridis (8%); two digenetic trematodes, Pleurogenoides tacapensis (14.5%) and Prosotocus confusus (11%); and two cestodes Nematotaenia dispar (35%) and Nematotaenia chantalae (8.5%). A Taxonomical Study On The Zooplankton Of Göksu Dam Lake (Diyarbakır), Aysel Bekleyen

The zooplanktonic fauna of Göksu dam lake was taxonomically investigated between April 1995 and December 1996. As a result, 16 species of cladocerans, three species of copepods and 28 species of rotifers, a total of 47 species, were identified in the lake. Of these, Monommata arndti (Rotifera) is a new record for Turkey's inland waters.

A large number of molluscan shells were collected from the seas of Turkey (the Mediterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea, the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea) and examined to determine their species and to point out the species found in each sea. Twenty-four (16 male, 8 female) specimens of the Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise Testudo graeca were examined from Mardin, southeastern Turkey. Data on the abundance, reproduction, diet and damage index of the soft-furred field rat Millardia meltada were collected during the rice and wheat seasons. The abundance of Millardia meltada remained high at the post-harvest stage of the rice and wheat crops. The ploughing of fields did not affect the abundance of Millardia. The mean annual prevalence of pregnancy was 50% and the mean embryonic litter size 6.2 ± 0.4. Sphaerospora elegans Thelohan, 1892 and Myxobilatus gasterostei Davis, 1944 infections in the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L., 1758) were studied from January to May 2000. Infection prevalence and intensity values were determined for mixed infections to be 26.5% and 3+ (0-5) parasites per fish, respectively. These values for each species were also determined. While infection prevalence and mean intensity values for S.elegans were 11.9% and 3+ (0-5), they were 17.9% and 3+ (0-5), respectively, for M. gasterostei. The effects of some antibiotics and antifungal agents in combination on the total protein content of young pupae of the hymenopterous endoparasitoid, Pimpla turionellae L., were investigated by rearing the larvae aseptically on chemically defined synthetic diets. These effects varied with the kinds and levels of the combination of antimicrobial agents in the diets. The combinations of antibiotics generally increased the total protein content according to their individual levels in the diets. Antifungal agent combinations caused a slight but significant increase in the total protein content. This study was carried out to determine the effect of temperature on the development, sexual maturation time, food consumption and body weight of S. gregaria, Forsk., at 25 and 30ºC. The insects were fed on fresh wheat sprouts (FWS) and bran (B). When the temperature was increased, both developmental time and attainment time to sexual maturation were shortened. Total nymphal developmental time at 25 and 30ºC was 32 and 22 days, respectively. Similarly, the average attainment time to sexual maturity was 33 days at 30ºC, whereas it was 52 days at 25ºC. Muscle fiber types of the tunica muscularis externa of the upper part of the sparrow esophagus were characterised by the method of myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (mATPase). Muscle fibers were described as type II and type III. Muscle fiber types were histochemically different from those of the esophagus of broiler ross. It is thought that this difference should be evaluated according to the functional difference between the esophagus of domestic and wild bird species.

In this study, the flower choices of different bumblebee species in Ankara province regarding their associations among various parasites and micro-organisms were determined. A total of 21 different species of the genera Bombus Latreille and Psithyrus Lepeletier were examined. The motile hypopus of the mite species Acarus farris (Oudemans, 1905) (Acaridae) was found to be phoretic on Bombus (Bombus) terrestris, Megabombus (Megabombus) argillaceus, Megabombus (Thoracobombus) zonatus and Pyrobombus (Sibiricobombus) niveatus queens. Nosema bombi was also determined to be an internal parasite of B. terrestris. Topotypes of Microtus guentheri were compared with specimens of the genus Microtus with 2n=54 chromosomes from western Anatolia. According to morphological and biometrical comparisons, it was determined that M. guentheri is a different species from Microtus lydius. The dorsal colour and the shape of the baculum distinguish M. guentheri from M. lydius morphologically. In this study, 4.3 µg/g cimetidine and 17 µg/g ranitidine were orally given to mice for two months. The effects of cimetidine and ranitidine on kidney cortical tissue were examined at light microscopical level. In both groups, it was detected that the tubules were separated by their lumen containing darkly stained remnant material. Vacuolization, destruction of apical membrane and decreased PAS positive reaction were observed in the apical membrane of proximal tubule epithelial cells. Histomorphological structures of the femur and the second phalange of the second outer toe of the left frog leg were investigated using the decalcifying method in Rana bedriagae. Skeleton Growth Marks (SGMs) were clearly observed in Rana bedriagae and it was shown that the skeletochronological technique is convenient and applicable for the age determination of this species.

Seasonal changes in sea temperature levels affect the swimming performance of fish. This study investigates if a change of 5°C from 7 to 12°C in water temperature has a significant effect on the maximum swimming performance of whiting, Merlangius merlangus, which is one of the most common species caught in the bottom trawl fisheries of the North Sea. Some population parameters of the whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus) distributed along the Turkish Black Sea coast, were determined by using age-length data. The mean annual growth rate in length was found to be 3.7 cm. The maximum age group was determined as IX for females and VI for males. The seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth parameters in length were estimated to be L_o=39.1 cm, K = 0.15 year^{-1}, t_o = -1.53 year, C=0.23, t_s=0.48. The blood serum proteins of Meriones meridianus, Meriones crassus, Meriones persicus and Meriones tristrami, all found in Turkey, along with domestic Meriones unguiculatus, which originated in Mongolia, were examined for the first time by SDS-PAGE. In the globulin zone, seven to ten bands were identified, one band in the post-albumin and albumin zones and one or two bands in the pre-albumin zone of five species of the genus Meriones. There was no diagnostic difference in the pattern of serum protein bands between species.

Five species were identified as new for the Turkish potamofauna of Edirne and Tekirdağ provinces from Thrace region between August 1995 and August 1996 in this study. They are Corynoneura scutellata Thienemann, 1944 (in Ergene River), Beckidia zabolotzkii (Goetghebuer, 1938) (in Meriç River), Robackia demeijerei (Kruseman, 1933) (in Meriç River and Sazlıdere Stream), Parachironomus arcuatus Goetghebuer 1919 (in Meriç River and Ergene River) and Parachironomus longiforceps Kruseman, 1933 (in Meriç River).

Research On The Herpetofauna Of Murat Mountain (Kütahya-Uşak), Adem Özdemi̇r, İbrahi̇m Baran

In this study, the amphibians and reptilians of Murat Mountain, where only mountain frogs have been investigated so far, are introduced. A total of 99 specimens from 15 different species were collected. Four of the species belong to anurans, one belongs to tortoises, six belong to lizards and four belong to the snakes group.
