Molecular Systematic Analyses Of Mediterranean Skates (Rajiformes), Cemal Turan
Molecular Systematic Analyses Of Mediterranean Skates (Rajiformes), Cemal Turan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA was used to elucidate the pattern of relationships and systematic status of 4 genera, including 9 species of skates (Rostroraja alba, Leucoraja fullonica, Dipturus oxyrinchus, D. batis, Raja clavata, R. montagui, R. asterias, R. miraletus, and R. radula), living in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The 16S rDNA dataset contained 39 variable and 29 parsimony informative sites. The mean nucleotide diversity (Pi) was 0.018. The genetic distances between pairs of species showed genetic homogeneity between R. clavata and R. montagui. The highest value of sequence divergence was detected between D. oxyrinchus and R. asterias (0.040). Low …

Occurrence Of The Alien Species Aspidosiphon (Aspidosiphon) Elegans (Sipuncula) On The Levantine And Aegean Coasts Of Turkey, Şermi̇n Açik
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A total of 37 specimens of Aspidosiphon (Aspidosiphon) elegans were collected at 5 stations located along the Levantine coast of Turkey and at 1 station located near Foça (Aegean Sea). This species inhabited calcareous rocks, the mussel Branchidontes pharaonis, and the alga Corallina mediterranea between 0 and 3 m depths. The population density of this species in the area was found to be 25 ind. M^{-2}. As Aspidosiphon (A.) elegans is a bio-eroder species, its high population density may cause serious damage to coralligenous habitats. This study gives more data regarding the morphological, biological, and ecological features of the species …

G- And C-Banded Karyotype Of Cricetulus Migratorius Pallas, 1773 (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Central Anatolia, Ati̇lla Arslan, Şükri̇ye Akan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The present study reports the banding patterns (G- and C-banding) of chromosomes of Cricetulus migratorius from Central Anatolia. Karyotype of C. migratorius comprised (2n) 22 chromosomes. The number of chromosomal arms (FN) was 44 and the number of autosomal arms (FNa) was 40. Subtelocentric X and Y chromosomes were very similar in size, but they differed on G- and C-banding patterns. Most autosomes in this species were C-negative. Pair no. 4 had very small centromeric C-bands, autosome no. 8 possessed an under-centromeric heterochromatin block, and the distal part of chromosome no. 9 had a C-positive band. The Y chromosomes had …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
In this study, the age and growth of Himri Barbel (Barbus luteus Heckel, 1843) were determined based on specimens collected from Orontes River-Turkey, during the period from February 2004 to January 2005. Characterization Of Branchial Na,K-Atpase From Three Freshwater Fish Species (Oreochromis Niloticus, Cyprinus Carpio, And Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Gülüzar Atli, Mustafa Canli
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Branchial Na,K-ATPase activity was characterized in 3 freshwater fish species (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Oreochromis niloticus, and Cyprinus carpio) with different ecological needs. Na^{+}, K^{+}, and Cl^{-} concentrations in the gills were also measured. The maximal Na,K-ATPase activity was observed at 100 mM Na^{+}, 20-40 mM K^{+}, 3-4 mM Mg^{2+}, and 1 mM ouabain. The maximal velocity (Vmax) of Na,K-ATPase isolated from O. mykiss (1.07 µmol Pi/mg prot/h) was lower than that isolated from O. niloticus (7.25 µmol Pi/mg prot/h) and C. carpio (7.44 µmol Pi/mg prot/h). Nevertheless, Na^{+}, K^{+}, and Cl^{-} levels in O. mykiss were higher than the others. The …

Karyotypes Of Two Iranian Bat Species, Myotis Blythii And Miniopterus Schreibersii (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae, Miniopteridae), Ahmet Karataş, Muhammed Mouradi Gharakheloo, Teoman Kankiliç
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The karyotypes of 2 bat species from Iran were examined. The diploid number of chromosomes (2n) and the fundamental numbers of chromosomal arms (NFa) were determined to be 2n = 44 and NFa = 54 for Myotis blythii and 2n = 46 and NFa = 50 for Miniopterus schreibersii, respectively. The karyotypes of Iranian bats show similarity within populations in other countries with respect to the diploid chromosome numbers; however, they are quite different in the fundamental chromosome numbers and the numbers of autosomal arms.

Some specimens are well preserved and some are in a poor state of preservation. Among the collected specimens, 8 were included in this study due to their good preservation. All the selected specimens belong to the lower dentition of D. majus and document intraspecific size variation.
Acute Toxic Effects Of Malathion On The 21^St Stage Larvae Of The Marsh Frog, Ferah Sayim
Acute Toxic Effects Of Malathion On The 21^St Stage Larvae Of The Marsh Frog, Ferah Sayim
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Currently, amphibian decline is accepted as a global problem. One of the most important proposed causes for the decline is the use of agrochemicals, especially pesticides. Nevertheless, information about the impact of pesticides on amphibian populations remains scarce. The present study sought to identify the effects of malathion, an organophosphorus insecticide, on 21^{st} stage larvae of the marsh frog, Rana ridibunda, with an acute toxicity test using a static system. Each experimental group contained 10 healthy larvae and was exposed to different concentrations of technical and formulation grade malathion for 96 h. Concentrations of malathion that caused 50% mortality (LC_{50}) …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
In this study, 4 experimental groups and 1 control group containing adult mice (Mus musculus var. albinos) were used to examine the effects of 2 different cadmium compounds, namely cadmium para hydroxybenzoate, which was newly synthesized, and cadmium chloride on the liver of mice. In various test concentrations, both cadmium compounds were intraperitoneally injected into adult mice every day for 15 days. With standard histological techniques samples were obtained from the livers of the mice. Slides were prepared and examined with light microscopy (Nikon Eclipse E600) and histopathological structures were observed.

Turkish Journal of Zoology
The Ichneumonidae species associated with Umbelliferae plants in Palandöken Mountains in Erzurum were investigated between July 1996 and August 1997. Among the 5 plant species, Seselis libanotis and Carum carvi were more attractive for ichneumonid species than the rest of the species. The first one was visited by 13 ichneumonid species with 109 individuals and the second one was visited by 9 species with 220 individuals. All these plant species could be accepted good nectar reservoir for ichneumonids.

Turkish Journal of Zoology
The karyotype and hair scale structure of the subterranean mole rat, Nannospalax leucodon (Nordmann, 1840), in Kırıkkale province were determined. The diploid number, fundamental number, and the number of autosomal arms were 54, 74, and 70, respectively. The structure of the hair scale type was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and was found to be serrate coronal, simple coronal, and erose coronal at the base, shaft, and tip, respectively. The chromosomal form and hair scale structure of the mole rat were recorded for the first time from Kırıkkale province.
