Bioeconomic Analysis Of Commercial Pond Culturing Of The Striped Catfish Pangasianodon Hypophthalmus In The Mekong Delta, Vietnam, Hieu Truong Khac, Sha Miao, Cheng Ting Huang, Hong Hue Tran Thi Phuong
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
An analysis of costs and returns for striped catfish grow-out pond culturing in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam taking into consideration the factor of geographical location, was conducted. The geographical location not only had an influence on the cost but also the profitability of the enterprise. Multivariate statistical analysis showed a decline in the operating costs and benefits, depending on the location, being highest in middle stream ponds, less in upstream ponds and finally lowest in downstream ponds. However, the earning power of downstream ponds was highest, in terms of profitability associated with fingerlings, feed and energy. Cobb Douglas production function …

Extraction And Characterization Of Fucoidan From Six Brown Macroalgae, Chun-Ying Wang, Yean-Chang Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The content and composition of fucoidan in six brown macroalgae were investigated. The influence of different washing steps and two types of extraction methods on the yield and composition of fucoidan were assessed. The composition of the extract was determined by using a colorimetric method to measure the total sugar, sulfate, and protein contents of the fucoidan. The monosaccharide composition was assessed using high-performance liquid chromatography. The structures of the algal polysaccharide were studied using Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy. The fucoidan content extracted using method I was 13.13% (of dry weight), 24.00%, and 22.67% from Sargassum glaucescens, Sargassum …

Subtle morphogenesis begins during trunk development after the segmentation period in zebrafish. Sprouting angiogenesis forms the trunk vascular system after the extension of the dorsal aorta and cardinal veins. The posterior lateral line primordium migrates from head to tail, forming the sensory organs on the skin. It is still unclear whether this morphogenesis requires several master regulators to control the ongoing process. Hypoxia-inducible factor 2-alpha (Hif2-alpha) plays an essential role in the maturation of both central neural system and digestive system during embryogenesis. We hypothesized that Hif2-alpha also regulates trunk development. Through loss-of-function experiments, we found that Hif2- alpha, but …

Length-Based Estimates Of Growth And Natural Mortality For Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans) In The Northwest Pacific Ocean, Nan-Jay Su, Chi-Lu Sun, Chuan-Yuan Tai, Su-Zan Yeh
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Blue marlin is an important resource for commercial and recreational fisheries. However, several life history parameters needed for stock assessments of this species are poorly determined. Sex-specific catch-at-size data (eye fork length, EFL) for blue marlin were collected from the Taiwanese offshore longline fishery in the northwest Pacific Ocean, and analyzed using the MULTIFAN, a length-frequency analysis, to derive growth parameters. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of blue marlin were estimated to be different between sexes. The best model for the females included 11 age-classes in the lengthfrequency data sets (asymptotic length L = 312.5 cm EFL, growth coefficient k …

Economic Impact Of Recreational Fishing In Alabama, Gbenga Ojumu, Diane Hite, Deacue Fields
Professional Agricultural Workers Journal
Abstract
Anglers’ direct mail survey data were used with IMPLAN (Impact Analysis for Planning), input-output system, to estimate the economic impact of recreational fishing in Alabama and the Alabama Black Belt. Separate economic impacts are analyzed for the Black Belt and the State; and direct, indirect, and induced economic impacts were estimated for government revenues, income, and employment. Possible increases in these impacts were also estimated for hypothetically improved recreational fishing sites, using the ‘ideal’ hypothetical site characteristics. The results showed a direct total value added impact of $102.5m; indirect impact of $24.7m, and an induced impact of $8.3m, which …

Modulation Of Prey-Capture Kinematics And Suction Feeding Performance In Smallmouth Bass, Micropterus Dolomieu, Andrea Sejdic
Modulation Of Prey-Capture Kinematics And Suction Feeding Performance In Smallmouth Bass, Micropterus Dolomieu, Andrea Sejdic
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The feeding behavior of fishes is a topic that has piqued the interests of many researchers given the dynamic and ancestral nature of aquatic prey-capture. This study examines aquatic feeding in terms of the suction and ram components of feeding in smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, and how they modulate their kinematic behavior when attacking pelagic and benthic prey. Relative to other Micropterus genera, the reduced gape in smallmouth bass suggests they may create considerable suction pressure – stronger subambient pressure pulled through a smaller opening creates greater velocity. Suction feeding is useful when feeding on benthic prey, such as crayfish. …

Fisheries Research Reports
This document is a Question and Answer summary based on Fisheries Research Report 273: Evaluation of passive acoustic telemetry approaches for monitoring and mitigating shark hazards off the coast of Western Australia.
Shark attacks are rare but traumatic events that involve complex and dynamic interactions between sharks’ ecology and human demographics and behaviours. To better understand the biological and ecological factors contributing to the series of incidents of white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) attacks off Western Australia, sharks were fitted with acoustic transmitters (‘tags’) that emit unique identification codes every 50 to 150 seconds. Tagged sharks were monitored by up to …

Lens On Habitat Destruction: A Photo Essay In Double Exposure, Bethany Holtz
Lens On Habitat Destruction: A Photo Essay In Double Exposure, Bethany Holtz
Student Publications
Human greed and ignorance bulldoze through nature, leaving behind scarred landscapes and broken ecosystems. Within the world’s aquatic environments, human actions have irreversibly fragmented and shattered habitats of countless animals. Voiceless, these displaced animals suffer largely in silence—their stories untold and invisible. Using my lens to expose their cries, my photography uncovers the narrative of habitat destruction.
In this photo essay, I juxtapose the pristine and degraded habitats of five threatened aquatic species using double exposure techniques, a method where two disconnected images are merged to create one unified work. By balancing light, opacity, color, and transparency, I focus attention …

Papers in Herpetology
The state of Florida, USA, has more introduced herpetofauna than any other governmental region on Earth. Four species of nonnative crocodilians have been introduced to Florida (all since 1960), one of which is established. Between 2000–2014 we field-collected three nonnative crocodilians in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and one in Hendry County, Florida. We used DNA barcoding and molecular phylogenetics to determine species identification and native range origin. Also, we described diet, movement, and growth for one crocodile. Our molecular analyses illustrated that two of the crocodiles we collected are most closely related to Nile Crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) from South Africa, suggesting …

Patterns Of Olfactory Neurogenesis And Immune Response In Adult Zebrafish Following Damage Of The Olfactory Bulb, Darcy M. Trimpe
Dissertations
The adult zebrafish olfactory system, with its persistent neuronal turnover and abundant regenerative capacity, is an excellent model system for studies of adult brain plasticity. Reversible deafferentation, achieved by repeated intranasal irrigation with detergent, reduces bulbar innervation and affects bulb structure and function, while cessation of treatment permits reinnervation and recovery of bulb volume. Alterations in cell genesis may account for this phenomenon. This study focuses on adult neurogenesis in the zebrafish olfactory system following reversible deafferentation and direct olfactory bulb injury.
Potential alterations in cell proliferation, differentiation, migration, and survival in the olfactory bulb following single and repeated intranasal …

Low-intensity production of Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus is characterized by low stocking rates, low installed aeration capacity, and no automated dissolved oxygen monitoring. Two studies conducted in nine 0.25-acre ponds quantified production characteristics of stocker Channel Catfish stocked for low-intensity food-fish production in single- or multiple-batch culture. In the multiple-batch study, 0.5-lb stockers (carryover fish) were stocked at 4,500 fish/acre and 0.044-lb fingerlings at 6,000 fish/acre. Stockers were grown to mean individual weights of 1.25, 1.75, or 2.25 lb. In the single-batch study, 0.5-lb stockers were stocked at 3,500, 4,500, and 5,500 fish/acre. All fish were fed a feed containing …

Use Of The Mitochondrial Control Region As A Potential Dna Mini-Barcoding Target For The Identification Of Canned Tuna Species, Jacquelyn K. Mitchell, Rosalee S. Hellberg
Food Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this study, a DNA mini-barcoding methodology was developed for the differentiation of species commonly found in canned tuna. Primers were designed to target a 236-base pair (bp) fragment of the mitochondrial control region (CR) and a 179-bp fragment of the first internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1). Phylogenetic analysis revealed the ability to differentiate 13 tuna species on the basis of the CR mini-barcode, except in a few cases of species introgression. Supplementary use of ITS1 allowed for differentiation of introgressed Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga), while differentiation of introgressed Atlantic …

Damsels In Distress: A Preliminary Assessment Of Pomacentridae Extinction Risk, Allison Roberts
Undergraduate Research Symposium
The family Pomacentridae is among the most diverse of the perciformes, boasting 400 different species of damselfish. These fish are found in coral reefs of varying depths around the world, most of which risk great damage due to climate change. In addition, many species are key components of the ornamental aquarium trade. Considering these threats, the importance of examining the state of Pomacentridae is paramount in examining the health of our oceans. Using IUCN Red List methods, preliminary data suggests some species of damselfish are at elevated risk of extinction.

Innovative Development Of The Octopus (Cf) Tetricus Fishery In Western Australia, Anthony M. Hart, Stephen C. Leporati, Ross Marriott, D. V. Murphy
Fisheries Research Reports
In 2010 the broad-scale introduction of a new gear type, the trigger trap, saw a 260% (33 t in 2009 to 119 t in 2010) increase in octopus landings in the Western Australian Developmental Octopus Fishery (DOF). Deployed in waters previously unfished by the DOF, initial catches demonstrated that trigger traps were more efficient and captured a different component of the population, compared to open-ended shelter pots traditionally used in the fishery. This shift caused a surge of interest in commercial octopus fishing.

"Where have all the salamanders gone?" 'This is a question I have been increasingly asked over the past five to six years from area residents. It seems we are observing a dramatic population decline of the western barred tiger salamander in parts of Southeast Nebraska. The western barred tiger salamander (Ambystoma mavortium) is one of only two salamanders in Nebraska. Over the past two years, none have been found in southeast Nebraska.
Salamanders, like all amphibians, are excellent indicator species. In many cases they act like the iconic canary in the mine shaft, telling us when to run …

Striped bass (Morone saxatilis), white bass (Morone chrysops), and their hybrid are an important group of fish prized for recreational angling in the United States, and there and abroad as a high-value farmed fish. Regardless of habitat, it is not uncommon for fish of the genus Morone to encounter and cope with conditions of scarce oxygen availability. Previously, we determined that hybrid striped bass reared under conditions of chronic hypoxia exhibited reduced feed intake, lower lipid and nutrient retention, and poor growth. To better understand the molecular mechanisms governing these phenotypes, in the present study, we examined the …
