The small islands of the Indian Ocean Territories are isolated reefs in an expanse of open ocean of abyssal depth. The majority of marine species that live on their reefs and lagoons have settled there from remote locations. Colonising individuals are presumed to have come to the island as the result of unusual weather and current conditions and form populations that are, necessarily, largely self-sustaining. Although deafness is a universal problem, effective treatments have remained elusive. In order to develop potential treatments, an overall understanding of the cellular process of auditory hair cell regeneration, which occurs in fish but not mammals, must be established. A previous microarray analysis and qRT-PCR validation of noise-exposed zebrafish showed that growth hormone (GH) was significantly upregulated during the process of auditory hair cell regeneration. Thus, GH may play an important role during hair cell regeneration. The marine and coastal environment of the Pilbara and Kimberley region in north-western Western Australia contains many assets, including remote and near pristine habitats, unique habitats within Australia, unique fauna and flora; as well as assets of value to commercial and industrial ventures; and for recreational human usage. However, there is a lack of monitoring in the Pilbara and Kimberley marine and coastal environments. This is in large part due to the remoteness of the area, making access difficult, and consequently making monitoring programs expensive to run in the region.

The Minister for Fisheries established the Integrated Fisheries Management Allocation Advisory Committee (IFAAC), under Section 42 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA), in 2004 to investigate IFM resource allocation issues and make recommendations to him on optimal resource use.

The IFAAC has prepared this report, which documents the committee’s initial position on allocations for the west coast demersal scalefish resource, along with the reasons for its conclusions as a basis for widespread community consultation. This report follows the IFAAC’s preliminary investigation of the west coast demersal scalefish resource sharing issues and consultation with stakeholders.

Most introduced species cause no apparent harm. A small minority of introduced species become pests, but these few can cause substantial economic and ecological damage.

Following the setting of a 40 tonne Total Allowable Recreational Catch (TARC) for the Perth recreational abalone fishery, a working group was formed to examine future management options.

The Metropolitan Roe’s Abalone Recreational Fishery Working Group (“the Working Group”) examined historical management, key principles, amenity of fishing, bag limits, license numbers, season length and timing of the season to assist its deliberations. A questionnaire was also sent out to 1,000 abalone recreational licence holders, with 20 per cent of licensees providing a detailed response.

The project specifically focused on developing formulated diets for marine fish larvae, specifically targeting more physical aspects of microdiets such as feeding methods, feed availability and particle recognition. A commercially ready microdiet formulation was developed that achieved better ingestion, digestion and survival for yellowtail kingfish than other commercially available diets. Two manufacturers of aquaculture feeds showed interested in the formulations, however neither of the companies have started producing the diet commercially.

As part of the Outcomes of the Wetline Review released in 2007 (Fisheries Management Paper 224) the then Minister for Fisheries approved the drafting of the Gascoyne Demersal Scalefish Fishery Management Plan (the Plan). The Hon Norman Moore MLC, Minister for Fisheries re-approved those decisions in 2009. The draft Plan will supersede the Shark Bay Snapper Management Plan 1994.

Lipids and fatty acids (FA) were investigated in 4 species of forage fish: northern anchovy Engraulis mordax, Pacific sardine Sardinops sagax, Pacific herring Clupea pallasi, and whitebait smelt Allosmerus elongatus, for their ability to serve as biological indicators of ocean conditions in the California Current large marine ecosystem (CCLME). Samples were collected during the oceanographically contrasting years of 2005 and 2006. Upwelling was severely curtailed in the spring and early summer of 2005, leading to delayed biological productivity, whereas upwelling was relatively normal in spring 2006. On October 10th, 2005, the chemical ship SAMHO BROTHER mishap occurred in the Taiwan Strait while transporting a cargo of benzene. Explosive approach was applied but failed, causing the ship wreck sank to a depth of 70 m. Oil spill was recovered in a small amount, leaving about 50 tons of the fuel remained. On the other hand, environmental monitoring at the site of the accident revealed that almost all of the great amount of 3140 m3 benzene remains stored in the nine tanks on the ship and further actions upon such a unique event in the history are urgent. …

Mangrove species are uniquely adapted to tropical and subtropical coasts, and although relatively low in number of species, mangrove forests provide at least US $1.6 billion each year in ecosystem services and support coastal livelihoods worldwide. Globally, mangrove areas are declining rapidly as they are cleared for coastal development and aquaculture and logged for timber and fuel production. Background: Pentastomiasis is a rare parasitic infection of humans. Pentastomids are dioecious obligate parasites requiring multiple hosts to complete their life cycle. Despite their worm-like appearance, they are commonly placed into a separate sub-class of the subphylum Crustacea, phylum Arthropoda. However, their systematic position is not uncontested and historically, they have been considered as a separate phylum.

Ten Mile Brook Dam has a surface area of 275 Ha and receives water from a 10 km2 catchment (Figure 1). It has a total storage capacity of 1,691 ML. At the time of this study the dam was 89 % capacity (1,511 ML), however as recently as June 2009 water storage was as low as 663 ML (39 % capacity).

In order to improve the drinking water supply to the town of Margaret River, the Water Corporation is investigating the option of pumping bore water into Ten Mile Brook Dam. This would remove the need to transfer water from …
