Assessment Of Kokanee Salmon, Oncorhynchus Nerka, Genetic Stocks In Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Utah-Wyoming, Michael F. Canning

I investigated the relative abundance, spatial distributions, return to the creel, and growth rates of two genetic stocks of kokanee salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, in Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Utah-Wyoming. The two genetic stocks consist of fish from the two major spawning populations of kokanee in the reservoir. One population, Shore Spawners, spawns along the eastern shoreline of the Open Hills area of the reservoir. The other population, Sheep Creek, spawns in Sheep Creek, a tributary located in the Canyon area of the reservoir.

Mitochondrial DNA of kokanee from each population was analyzed to determine haplotype differences between stocks. These haplotype …

A bioenergetics model was constructed for stream-resident drift-feeding salmonids. Model predictions of surplus power (energy available per unit time for growth and reproduction) were not statistically distinguishable from observations of surplus power in three laboratory studies. Of 40 experimental trials in these three studies, the model correctly predicted surplus power in 39 cases (p < 0.05).

I collected observations of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) focal velocity and physical habitat availability in the Green River of northeastern Utah, USA (1988-1990). Most research on the early life history of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, has been conducted in large partially stratified estuaries such as the Chesapeake Bay. In contrast, little is known about the recruitment dynamics or habitat requirements of blue crab postlarvae (megalopae) in shallow well-mixed lagoonal systems that make up a considerable part of the species' range. In Virginia's coastal lagoons, planktonic blue crab megalopae are most abundant at night on flooding tides, and are not abundant during the daytime or on ebbing tides. In June 1995, a self-completion survey of fishermen in the rock lobster fishery was sent out by The Marketing Centre to 589 licensees. A total of 206 valid responses were received. The questionnaire was fairly long and dealt with a number of complex issues. As such, this response rate of 36.0% compares favorably with the average for postal surveys of around 40.0%. The following represents the main findings from the survey.

The blacknose dace, Rhinichthys atratulus, is a cyprinid minnow common to shallow streams throughout North America. It has been shown to be sensitive to anthropogenic stress and a study of the genetic nature of R. atratulus populations may yield information about their habitats. In West Virginia, two subspecies of R. atratulus are present, R. a. atratulus and R. a. obtusus, which are separated by the Allegheny divide. The decline of most Mexican fisheries has occurred so rapidly that few Mexicans and Americans alike fully appreciate the loss. The major focus of this paper will examine the false impression that Mexico is engaging in marine conservation; in reality, its conservation efforts are responses to after-the-fact actions brought on by world critics and as a vehicle to pacify conservationists. This study was based on information gathered from town records and public hearings related to proposed aquaculture ventures. The principal objective of this thesis was to descriptively and empirically assess shellfish consumption hazards in the state of Rhode Island and to evaluate the use of a shellfish hazard warning label to modify unsafe consumptive behaviors. To accomplish this task, three research problems were examined using a survey instrument. The survey instrument was a questionnaire which included both closed and open-ended questions. The Rio Grande Delta of Texas is one of the most diverse ecological areas in Texas. The area is favorite among ornithologists due to the presence of many species that winter there or migrate through the area. Similarly, the Delta harbors several rare mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and a host of invertebrates, which are found nowhere else in North America. Most ecologists attribute this unique faunal diversity to the great variety of vegetation that characterizes the Rio Grande Delta. Accurately identifying the vegetation is therefore an important aspect of field research performed in the region.

Recent occurrences and reports of gray wolves (Canis lupus) in North Dakota have generated public interest and created demands on management agencies. We summarized reports of wolves in North Dakota received from the public and government personnel, and evaluated suitability of habitat for wolves. We suggest that in recent years dispersing wolves have sporadically occurred in all quarters of the state except the southwest, and non-dispersing wolves have occurred in the Turtle Mountains region in north-central North Dakota. Habitat data from the 1,500 km² Turtle Mountains physiographic region, bisected by the North Dakota/Manitoba border, suggest the potential …

Nesting chronology of raptors is sparsely documented in North Dakota. During 1981-94, we determined hatching dates at 298 nest attempts by eight species of raptors on and within 10 km of Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge, northwestern North Dakota. We examined the potential of employing a series of lake management strategies to enhance production of endangered Snake River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in its historical nursery lakes in central Idaho. We used a combination of limnological sampling, experimentation, and simulation modeling to assess effects of lake fertilization and kokanee reduction on growth and survival of juvenile sockeye salmon. Juvenile sockeye salmon from a broodstock of this endangered species are being introduced into the lakes from 1995 to 1998. Results of our analyses indicated that several lakes were suitable for receiving broodstock progeny. Field experimentation and simulation modeling indicated that …

From 18-21 April 1996, students in a Utah State University class (Aquatic Ecology Laboratory; FW 560) measured limnological and fisheries characteristics in two side canyons (Halls Creek Bay and Moki Canyon) and the main channel of Lake Powell. Inclement weather precluded sampling of two other side canyons. Most of the sub-projects, directed by indiVIdual students, addressed the following two hypotheses: (1) productivity gradients existed from the inflows of the side canyons toward the main channel and; (2) productivity was higher in the side canyons than in the main channel of the lake. We monitored the diet and growth of stocked rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss in two Utah reservoirs during 1986 and 1989–1990. For the first month after stocking, juvenile rainbow trout in both reservoirs fed extensively on large Daphnia spp. In East Canyon Reservoir where Daphnia were abundant, this pattern continued throughout the summer, fall, and winter. Growth of rainbow trout in East Canyon Reservoir was generally good throughout 1989–1990. In Causey Reservoir, where Daphnia were less abundant and smaller, rainbow trout fed progressively less on smaller Daphnia throughout the summer, fall, and winter, while other prey items (snails, aquatic insects, and …

The Cunningham Creek potential Research Natural Area (RNA) is located approximately 27.2 km (17 miles) east-southeasterly of Crawford, Nebraska or 40 km (25 miles) southwesterly of Chadron, Nebraska. Located on the Pine Ridge District of the Nebraska National Forest, the site is included in the Pine Ridge ecosystem of western Nebraska. Four hundred hectares (1000 acres) consisting of deciduous woodlands, pine forests, and upland prairies are located in the survey area. Inclusions of wet meadows, oak woodland, and aquatic systems intermingle in the deciduous woodland. Cattle grazing and recreation are the primary uses of the area. The purpose of this …

Densities of Crassostrea virginica remain high enough to support substantial fisheries throughout the Gulf of Mexico despite high mortality rates produced by the endoparasite Perkinsus marinus. The infrequency of epizootics in these populations suggests that controls exist on the disease intensification process. The progression of epizootics in oyster populations, the factors that trigger epizootics, and the factors that terminate epizootics once started were investigated with a coupled oyster population—P. marinus model.
