Diatoms As Indicators Of Water-Level Change In Freshwater Lakes, Julie A. Wolin, Jeffrey R. Stone

Water-level changes result from a variety of geological, biological, and/or climatic processes. Many of these changes occur over long periods; others may be rapid or result from catastrophic events. In aquatic environments, diatoms are highly sensitive indicator organisms and their microfossils, deposited in lake sediments, can be used to infer environmental changes (Smol, 2008). Unambiguous diatom signals can be reconstructed from lakes isolated from marine or brackish waters (e.g. Fritz et al., this volume; Horton & Sawai, this volume). However, in freshwater systems lake-level changes are often recorded as increases in planktonic (free-floating) diatoms – although as discussed below, interpretation …

Introduced fish species have been documented to have adverse effects on both the environment and native species of the drainage into which they have been introduced. Following the setting of a 40 tonne Total Allowable Recreational Catch (TARC) for the Perth recreational abalone fishery, a working group was formed to examine future management options.

The Metropolitan Roe’s Abalone Recreational Fishery Working Group (“the Working Group”) examined historical management, key principles, amenity of fishing, bag limits, license numbers, season length and timing of the season to assist its deliberations. A questionnaire was also sent out to 1,000 abalone recreational licence holders, with 20 per cent of licensees providing a detailed response.

This study investigated the location and diel habitat preferences (at 100 m reach scale) of fish in a small tributary stream in late spring, early summer. During the day, coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) preferred areas with more cover (deeper, greater extent of undercut banks) vs. night when LWD was preferred (Pearson correlation and step-wise MLR). Chinook (O. tshawytscha) exhibited an opposite pattern, preferring LWD during the day vs. higher velocity at night. This suggests these two potadromous species may be partitioning resources. Pooling coho, chinook and rainbow trout (O. mykiss) indicated reaches with more LWD …

Chelonians (i.e., turtles) are an imperiled group of reptiles with about 66% of the recognized species listed as threatened by the IUCN. Most chelonian species have a unique set of life history traits (i.e., longevity, delayed sexual maturity, and low juvenile survivorship), which makes their populations exceedingly sensitive to increases in adult and juvenile moralities. With numerous anthropogenic effects (e.g., habitat alteration, exploitation, and over harvesting) negatively influencing mortality rates, chelonians have experienced global precipitous declines and extinctions.

First Records Of Hypleurochilus Geminatus And Centropristis Philadelphica From Chesapeake Bay, Aimee D. Halvorson

During the fall of 2007, Centropris philadelphica (rock seabass) and Hypleurochilus geminatus (Crested blenny) were collected from Chesapeake Bay. These captures are significant as they represent the first substantiated record of C. philadelphica from Chesapeake Bay and only the second and third validated records of H. geminatus. Additionally, the first record of H. geminatus from Chesapeake Bay was only recently recognized since the specimen had been previously misidentified as Parablennius marmoreus (seaweed blenny). The collection of seven individuals of H. geminatus in 2007, from two locations, indicates that the species may be resident within the Chesapeake Bay estuary.

A telephone survey of Department of Fisheries’ stakeholders was conducted in August 2008 in order to evaluate their perception of the Department’s management of commercial and recreational fishing, pearling and aquaculture, and fish and fish habitat protection. The survey also assessed satisfaction with the level of service provided to stakeholders and their involvement in decision making processes. The results of this survey were compared to similar surveys conducted during 2002, 2004, 2006 and a survey of the general public conducted during 2008. There is a large and growing market for these products. Sedimentation affects both stream physical and biological integrity. Improperly designed stream passage accompanied with sedimentation and altered hydrology can impede fish passage and reduce fish assemblage integrity. The purpose of this study was to: 1) quantify impacts of poorly constructed road stream crossings and eroding banks on fish assemblages, and 2) assess these sites as sediment sources and connectivity breaks on entire fish assemblages and individual fish species. Electrofishing was conducted during spring and fall 2004 and 2005. A total of 29 electrofishing reaches were sampled which included 5 road-stream and streambank restoration sites. Arkansas largemouth bass populations have been stocked with the exotic Florida bass for several decades to enhance lake fisheries. This study sampled 1,474 bass from eight Arkansas lakes to determine the success of introducing Florida bass alleles and hybridization events between bass species. Microsatellite data was then compared to historical allozyme data. Additionally, relationships were identified between Florida bass allele frequencies and lake characteristics as well as phenotypes and condition and length at age. A wide range of Florida bass allele frequencies were identified between lakes (10 - 70%), with the most highly correlated variable for successful stocking being reservoir …

Opportunistic observation, underwater photography, and sponge collection on the eastern side of the island was conducted. The sponge samples collected where then taxonomically analyzed in the lab. This is study will contribute to the limited amount of information known about sponge taxonomy and prevalence in the Western Indian Ocean region. Fishing for crustaceans including southern and western rock lobster and deep-sea crab species on the south coast of Western Australia began in the 1960s and has developed significantly through improvements in technology, vessel reliability and the risk and endeavour of some fishers. The expansion in the capacity of the fleet has lead to the development of two managed fisheries.

This paper provides a brief outline of the history of the fishery; details the fishing and management methods presently used; and discusses the options available for future management, particularly ways of limiting fishing effort.
