Samples were collected from 79 stations in the Sakarya River Basin between September 1995 and August 1998. A Contribution To The Knowledge Of Tenthredinidae (Symphyta, Hymenoptera) Fauna Of Turkey Part Ii: Subfamilies Blennocampinae, Dolerinae, Nematinae And Selandrinae, Önder Çalmaşur, Hi̇kmet Özbek

In the second part of this contribution to the fauna of the typical sawfly, Tenthredinidae in Turkey, the subfamilies Blennocampinae, Dolerinae, Nematinae and Selandrinae are discussed. Twenty-seven species in 13 genera of Blennocampinae, 7 species in 2 genera of Dolerinae, 9 species in 6 genera of Nematinae, and 4 species in 4 genera of Selandrinae, a total of 47 species, are recorded. Of these, 7 species were new to the Turkish fauna. New data on geographical distribution and host plants are given for some species. For each species, a chorotype is reported.

Phorbia securis Tiensuu, 1935 (Diptera, Anthomyiidae) is a new pest found in the cereal areas of the Thrace region in Turkey. In this paper, its morphology, short biology, hosts and distribution in Turkey are presented.

Three families (Limacidae, Agriolimacidae and Milacidae) and 7 species, (Limacus flavus, Deroceras reticulatum, Deroceras berytensis, Mesolimax brauni, Mesolimax escherichi, Milax cf. altenai and Tandonia budapestensis) were identified from Lakes Region (Isparta, Burdur, and Afyon provinces). These include 1 endemic genus with 2 species. In this study some new habitat information and morphological data of the species are given. Additionally, Deroceras reticulatum, D. berytensis and Milax cf. altenai are new records for the area.

The material of 31 specimens of Nannospalax ehrenbergi was collected from 11 different localities in the Hatay region in south Anatolia. The specimens were studied in respect to their morphological and karyological characteristics in detail. Some taxonomic characteristics and measurements of the body and skull were investigated. The data obtained from the specimens were compared with the results of previously published accounts and with samples collected from more than 16 other localities in Turkey, Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Cultivated and non-cultivated areas were surveyed between 1999 and 2000 for coccoid fauna in Ankara, Afyon, Burdur and Isparta provinces. Nineteen species from 11 genera belonging to Pseudococcidae were found. Among these Chaetococcus phragmitis (Marchal, 1909), Phenacoccus bicerarius Borchsenius, 1949, Phenacoccus evelinae Tereznikova, 1968, Puto pilosellae (Sulc, 1898), Puto superbus (Leonardi, 1907), Rhodania porifera Goux, 1935, and Spinococcus morrisoni (Kritchenko, 1935) were new records for Turkish fauna.

Male and female specimens of Brachypoda mutila and male specimens of Bandakia concreta collected from a seepage spring in West Anatolia are described. Their morphological features are compared with those of the most closely related species. Identification keys to the species known from the Palearctic of the genera Bandakia and Brachypoda are provided.

In the course of examining rumen contents obtained from 8 domestic goats (Capra hircus L.) from the south-east of Turkey, a new ciliate species Entodinium salmani n.sp. (Entodiniidae, Entodiniomorphida) and 4 formae [E. salmani salmani n.sp., n.f., E. salmani monospinosum n.sp., n.f., E. salmani bispinosum n.sp., n.f., E. salmani trispinosum n.sp., n.f.] were distinguished. The main characteristics of these species and formae are described in detail and compared with those of similar ones previously reported.

This study aimed to contribute to the knowledge of Turkish Malacostraca fauna by determining the Malacostraca (Crustacea) fauna of Yuvarlak Stream. Monthly sampling was performed at 10 stations along the stream between May 2001 and April 2002. Eleven taxa were determined; of these, 5 (Gammarus balcanicus, Gammarus longipedis, Echinogammarus antalyae, Corophium orientale and Orchestia platensis) belong to Amphipoda, 3 (Palaemonetes antennarius, Atyaephyra desmarestii orientalis and Potamon potamios) to Decapoda, 2 (Lekanesphaera hookeri and Cyathura carinata) to Isopoda and 1 (Diamysis mesohalobia mesohalobia) to Mysidacea.

Gambusia affinis, Baird & Girard, 1853, originally comes from North America and has been distributed all over the world for the biological control of mosquitoes. This study aimed to determine some biological properties, such as structure, age, growth and reproduction of the populations of G. affinis in Turkey. For this purpose, between November 1998 and October 1999, 2026 mosquitofish were caught in the wetlands of Fethiye-Akgöl, Dalaman and Ortaca in Muğla province in the western Mediterranean region of Turkey and the data found were compared. A cytogenetic investigation on 12 Garra rufa (Heckel, 1843) specimens, from Müftü stream, was carried out by a slight modification of the conventional air-dried technique, using gill epithelial cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 44, comprising 22 metacentric and 20 submetacentric chromosomes and 2 acrocentric chromosome carrying satellites (NF = 85). A haploid idiogram, based on the chromosome measurements, was prepared. A detailed standard karyotype of G. rufa was established for the first time in this study.

Introducing A New Approach To Estimating Red Meat Production In Turkey, Fahri̇ Yavuz, Carl R. Zulauf

A common concern with official estimates of red meat production in Turkey is that they underestimate the level of production. One of the frequently cited reasons is that unregulated slaughter is undercounted. This study uses an estimation method based on the biology of red meat production to examine the potential impact of this undercounting. The production estimates obtained for 1991-1998 using this biological-based method exceed the numbers estimated by official organizations, but fall within the range of estimates obtained from other proposed approaches to estimating red meat production.

The study was carried out on 89 specimens representing 11 bat species, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, R. hipposideros, R. euryale, Myotis brandtii, M. bechsteinii, M. myotis, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P. kuhlii, Nyctalus leisleri, Plecotus auritus and Miniopterus schreibersii. The specimens were collected from the eastern Black Sea region between the 1992 and 1994. Some ecological features of the species and their localities are presented in this study.

Two species of Aulodrilus, A. pigueti and A. pluriseta, collected from Sakarbaşı, Enne, Margıalan and Kuşbaşlı creeks (parts of the upper Sakarya river system), are new records for the Turkish Potamofauna. In addition, the genus Aulodrilus is also new for the Anatolian fauna. Their morphological features were examined under a scanning electron microscope and light microscope and diagrams of them were drawn.

On The Distribution, Taxonomy And Karyology Of The Genus Plecotus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) In Turkey, Ahmet Karataş, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak, Tolga Kankiliç

Plecotus auritus and Plecotus austriacus were recorded from 8 and 3 localities in the Asiatic part of Turkey, respectively. It was determined that the length of the first premolar, the shape of the zygomatic arches and baculum distinguish these taxa from each other. Apart from these morphological characteristics, the tibia length of P. austriacus was found to be significantly greater than that of P. austriacus (P < 0.05). The diploid chromosome numbers were identical in both taxa (2n = 32). The number of chromosomal arms (FN = 54) and the number of autosomal chromosomal arms (FNa = 50) were the same as in previously published papers on P. austriacus.

The egg batches with parasitoids of the sunn pest Eurygaster sp. (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae) were collected to determine the egg parasitoid Trissolcus species (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) of the pest from cereal areas in Turkey. In total, eight Trissolcus species, namely T. simoni Mayr, T. vassilievi Mayr, T. semistriatus Nees, T. grandis Thompson, T. manteroi Kieffer, T. pseudoturesis Rjachovsky, T. rufiventris Mayr and T. djadetshko Rjachovsky, are recognized. T. djadetshko Rjachovsky and T. manteroi Kieffer are new species for the Turkish fauna. The species are described and an identification key is provided.

Twenty-two (12 males, 10 females) specimens of Nannospalax nehringi, collected from Northeast Anatolia (Turkey), were used for morphological and karyological studies. The specimens from the Kars population have foramina on the premaxillonasal suture. These foramina are absent in the Erzurum, Ağrı and Van populations. The diploid number of chromosomes in the Erzurum and Kars population is 2n = 50. The number of chromosomal arms (NF) is 70 and the number of autosomal arms (NFa) is 66. Urfacus bozovaensis gen. et sp. nov. of the Entodontinae (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae) are described. The specimens were swept from a wheat field together with many specimens of Haplothrips tritici Kurdj. (Thysanoptera, Phleothripidae) in Bozova, Şanlıurfa, Turkey. The diagnostic characters of the taxa are illustrated and the taxonomic position of the genus and species is discussed.

A large number of molluscan shells were collected from the seas of Turkey (the Mediterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea, the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea) and examined to determine their species and to point out the species found in each sea. The examination revealed a total of 610 shell species and many varieties belonging to various classes, subclasses, families and subfamilies of mollusca. Ellobius lutescens is the only species of the genus Ellobius living in eastern Anatolia. They are highly adapted to underground life. There is no knowledge about the ecological peculiarities, population structures or detailed range of this species in Turkey. The karyological, bacular and phallic aspects of Apodemus iconicus Heptner, 1948, in Turkey were examined for the first time. The diploid number of chromosomes was 2n = 48, the number of autosomal arms was NFa = 46, and the fundamental number was NF = 48. The X chromosome was large acrocentric, and the Y chromosome was small acrocentric. The baculum was composed of a distal and proximal part, the average length of which was 3.74 mm. The phallus showed two notches near the crater, and a groove extending along the phallus on the ventral side.

In this study, developmental stages of D. modesta (Leonardi, 1899) females collected from Erzincan province and its surroundings by Bal in 1997-2001 were evaluated. The specimens were examined in the light of previous studies. Earlier definitions, the structural features of females and nymphs, and the localities of the species were reviewed. Original drawings were also made of our specimens.

Animals were assigned to four age groups according to molar wear, field notes and external and cranial measurements. Six days-old animals were referred to newborn, up to 30 days as young and thereafter as adult; animals with very worn molars were considered old. In addition to the statistical differences among age groups, it was determined that the main morphological differences were in the interorbital constriction, the shape of the braincase, the ridges and the position of occipital condyles. The morphological and karyological characteristics of 27 specimens of Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771) from the European part of Turkey were studied in detail and compared with those in the literature in order to provide a wider perspective on the taxonomic status of Apodemus agrarius in Turkey. In all the samples examined, 2n = 48 karyotype was observed with FN = 56 and FNa = 54. Twenty-four (16 male, 8 female) specimens of the Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise Testudo graeca were examined from Mardin, southeastern Turkey. For morphological comparisons, 15 morphometric characters and 31 ratios developed by combinations of straight carapace length (SCL) and straight carapace width (SCW) were investigated. A total of 426 serum samples were examined from 9 broiler and 7 broiler breeder flocks showing clinical signs of swollen head syndrome (SHS). Turkey rhinotracheitis virus antibodies in 8 broiler flocks were between 31.8 and 75.9% and in broiler breeder flocks between 5.4 and 48.6%, with a commercial ELISA. Typical clinical symptoms were observed for SHS in broilers and broiler breeders. During the study, turkey flocks showing clinical signs were not detected.
