This study was conducted in pregnant and aborted sheep to determine Toxoplasma gondiiantibodies. Blood samples were collected from a total of 154 sheep from 22 different herds during the period December 1996-January 1997 in Elazig and vicinity. Of these 154 sheep, 56 were pregnant, 57 aborted in the previous year and the remaining 41 sheep aborted within the period of the study. Sera obtained properly from these blood samples were examined by Sabine-Feldman (SF) test. Enterotoxaemia Incidence In Small Ruminants In Elazığ And The Surrounding Provinces In 1994-1998, Canan Özcan, Meti̇n Gürçay

132 intestine specimens belonging to small ruminants with suspected enterotoxaemia were sent to the Elazig Veterinary Control and Research Institute from Elazığ and the surrounding provinces in 1994-1998. In bacteriological examinations, it was found that 51 of the 132 specimens were positive and 81 negative. The toxin-neutralisation test was applied for diagnosis. The 51 enterotoxaemia cases were identified as 28 C.welchii Type D, 16 C.welchii Type C, 7 C.welchii Type A.

Records of 9,055 lambs from a composite population originating from crossing Columbia rams to Hampshire ´ Suffolk ewes at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center were used to estimate genetic parameters among growth traits. Traits analyzed were weights at birth (BWT), weaning (7 wk, WWT), 19 mo (W19), and 31 mo (W31) and postweaning ADG from 9 to 18 or 19 wk of age. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic and phenotypic (coroariances between objective measures and carcass visual scores, as a test of the potential value afvisual scores in selection programmes to improve carcass composition in crossbred lambs. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of liver fluke infections in cattle and sheep in Trakya (The European Part of Turkey). For this purpose the slaughterhouses of different localities (Tekirdağ, Hadimköy, Lüleburgaz, Çorlu, Kırklareli and Keşan) were visited between 03.03.1997 and 22.10.1997, and a total of 476 sheep and 415 cattle livers were examined. The prevalence rates of fasciolosis hepatica and dicrocoeliosis dendriticum were 3.99% and 23.55% in sheep, and 0.48% and 2.65% in cattle respectively. No changes in livers, which led to the partial or total condemnation, were observed.

This study was carried out on cows, sheep and goats in Salkaya Village, Kovancılar, Baskıl and Sivrice towns and in Elazığ during 1994 and 1995. Fifty two myiasis cases were detected throughout the study. Forty seven (90.38%) and 5 (9.62%) of the cases were determined in sheep and cows respectively, no myiasis case was encountered in goats. Twenty two (42.32%) of the cases were seen in June during 1994 and 1995, 10 (19.23%) in May, 9 (17.31%) in July, 8 (15.38%) in September and 3 (5.77%) in August. The animal material of the research was 3, 4 and 5 years old 210 Merino ewes and their lambs. The research was started at the beginning of the last 1.5 months period of gestation and continued until the lambs were reached 60 days age. It has been determined that 500 g and more (especially 1500 g) concentrate feed given fed ewes daily at the last 1.5 months period of gestation increased the liveweight and decreased the weight loss of ewes and increased birth weight, growth and survival rates of lambs.

In this study, the etiology of ovine and caprine abortions was investigated bacteriologically, serologically and pathologically. Tissue samples collected from aborted sheep and goats in Elazığ and its borders were examined bacteriologically and pathologically for brucellosis, campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis and listeriosis. In addition, blood samples collected from aborted sheep and goats were examined by serological tests for the presence of antibodies to these bacteria. The metabolism experiment was designed to determine effects of once per 2 days (ID), once daily and twice daily drinking frequencies, and high and low body conditions on water and nutrient utilization by sheep fed high- and low-quality diets.

Effects of environmental factors such as ewe age, season of exposure, and time from lambing to exposure on fertility were evaluated using records on 1,084 Dorset ewes in the STAR accelerated lambing system. The STAR program consisted of five 30-d concurrent breeding and lambing periods per year beginning on January 1, March 15, May 27, August 8, and October 20. Fertility in the flock changed in a cyclic and predictable fashion during the year. Changes in prolificacy were less consistent but also tended to show cyclic variation.
