The Ability Of The N-Alkane Technique To Estimate Intake And Diet Choice Of Sheep, R. M. Lewis, A. M. Magadlela, N. S. Jessop, G. C. Emmans

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

This study assessed the efficacy of the n-alkane technique to estimate intake and diet composition in animals given single foods or a choice of two. In thefirst experiment intakes of pelleted ryegrassand lucerne, given eitheralone or as a choice, were measured in lambshoused indoors in individual pens. Each of the three feeding treatments was given to 12 lambs at two degrees of maturity (0.30 and 0·45 of estimated mature sizes). The 12 lambs were constituted as three replicates of the two sexes of each of two breeds. The measured intakes werecompared with those estimated using the n-alkanes C31 andC33, found …

During this period a total of 300 small ruminants consisting of 250 sheep and 50 goats were microscopically examined for Theileria species. Blood smears were prepared from the punctured ear of each animal for microscopic examination. At the same time, ticks were collected from the animals. The smears were stained with 5% Giemsa's stain solution and then examined under microscope with oil immersion objective. Theileria sp. were detected in 46 (18.40% ) and 4 (8.00% ) of the …

Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Faeces From Chickens, Sheep And Cattle In Elazığ Province, Hakan Kalender Jan 2003

Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Faeces From Chickens, Sheep And Cattle In Elazığ Province, Hakan Kalender

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Faecal samples collected from 206 chickens, 170 sheep and 130 cattle were investigated for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in animals slaughtered at local abattoirs in Elazığ. The prevalance of L. monocytogenes was 4.36% in chickens, 0.58% in sheep and 1.53% in cattle. Of the 12 L. monocytogenes isolates, seven (58.33%) and five (41.66%) belonged to serotypes 1 and 4, respectively. Other species isolated were L. innocua, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. murrayi and L. grayi. These results indicate that animal faeces could be a source of contamination of carcasses with L. monocytogenes and may lead to foodborne listeriosis.

Correlation Between Biochemical Parameters And Production Traits In Merino Cross Sheep Ii- Hemoglobin And Transferrin Types, Ni̇hat Mert, Handan Gündüz, Vedat Akgündüz, Münevver Akgündüz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

To determine the relationship between biochemical parameters and production traits in sheep, 111 of the animals raised in the Bandırma Sheep Research Institute were used as living materials. The blood samples of 31 Hampshire Down x Merino, 33 Dorset Down x Merino, 27 German Black Headed x Merino and 20 Border Leicester x Merino crosses were taken. Transferrin (Tf) and haemoglobin (Hb) types were determined. Some production traits such as greasy fleece weight, staple length, fiber diameter, ondulance and lamb birth weight were estimated. Important correlations between Hb AB and lamb birth weights (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Tf B type and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino and Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) and Tf A type and lamb birth weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) were also determined.

Miscellaneous Publication 6/2001 - Sheep And Goat Industries Biosecurity Plan, Department Of Agriculture Western Australia, Government Of Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

StockGuard has been initiated to develop a series of biosecurity plans for the animal industries in Western Australia. Through StockGuard, representatives from the animal industries have been working with the Department of Agriculture to identify the major threats to each of the animal industries and to develop action plans detailing how these threats will be managed.

The recent Foot and Mouth outbreak in the United Kingdom is a stark example of the potential for exotic disease to devastate an animal industry. The UK experience, along with the 1999 outbreak of virulent Newcastle disease in poultry in New South Wales have …

Bulletins 4000 -

Total grazing management (TGM) systems were designed to assist producers in the Western Australian rangelands to improve station productivity.TGM systems can increase the profits of pastoral properties by improving management control over grazing animals and by decreasing operating costs.

Over 1000 TGM yards have been put on the ground in the southern rangelands. The majority of these are sheep and goat systems, though an increasing number of cattle systems, and cattle, sheep and goat systems are being built.

This booklet is a practical guide to the types of TGM selfmustering systems available. It is designed to be used as a planning …

Maximising The Lamb Drop, Don Moir

Bulletins 4000 -

Although reproductive rates vary greatly between individual properties, the average marking percentage in Western Australia still hovers around 75%. In the absence of disease it is possible to improve on this figure by undertaking some straight forward management practices at different stages of the reproductive cycle.
