Crude and excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens of Fasciola hepatica were subjected to SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis in order to identify protein bands that would enable the specific and sensitive immunodiagnosis of sheep. Sera from 20 sheep with natural infections of F. hepatica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Cyst hydatid, Cysticercus tenuicollis, Trichostrongylidae, Paramphistomum spp., and Trichuris spp. and the same number of sera naturally infected with the same helminths without F. hepatica were tested using Western blotting, and the bands obtained from positive and negative groups were compared. This study was carried out in Ankara province, Turkey, between September 1996 and August 1998. During the study 1208 sheep, 1001 goats and 1059 cattle were examined for Haemaphysalis ticks. These examinations revealed that 380 (37.96%) goats, 346 (28.64%) sheep and 203 (19.16%) cattle had Haemaphysalis infestation. In total, 5254 Haemaphysalis ticks were collected from these animals. They were identified as H. parva, H. sulcata, H. punctata and Haemaphysalis nymphs. The objectives of this study were to estimate (co)variance components for growth and feed efficiency measures, and to compare selection strategies to improve economic efficiency of gain. Variance components for pre- and postweaning growth, body weight, and measures of feed efficiency were estimated from data collected on 1,047 Targhee lambs over 7 yr. Approximately 21 d after weaning, lambs were group-fed for 4 wk, with ad libitum access to a diet of 37% whole barley grain and 63% pelleted alfalfa hay. Lambs were then individually fed for 6 wk. This study assessed the efficacy of the n-alkane technique to estimate intake and diet composition in animals given single foods or a choice of two. In thefirst experiment intakes of pelleted ryegrassand lucerne, given eitheralone or as a choice, were measured in lambshoused indoors in individual pens. Each of the three feeding treatments was given to 12 lambs at two degrees of maturity (0.30 and 0·45 of estimated mature sizes). Blood samples from 31 Hampshire Down x Merino, 33 Dorset Down x Merino, 27 German Black Headed x Merino and 20 Border Leicester x Merino crosses were taken. Plasma glucose, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and ceruloplasmin levels were determined. This study was carried out to investigate live weight, wool production and some body measurements of Karayaka and Bafra (Chios x Karyaka B_1) sheep. The Karayaka breed is raised in the Black Sea region, while the Sakız (Chios) breed is raised in the coastal areas of western Anatolia. The Bafra type was developed by crossing between Sakız and Karayaka for a female line to use in lamb production. Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Faeces From Chickens, Sheep And Cattle In Elazığ Province, Hakan Kalender

Faecal samples collected from 206 chickens, 170 sheep and 130 cattle were investigated for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in animals slaughtered at local abattoirs in Elazığ. The prevalance of L. monocytogenes was 4.36% in chickens, 0.58% in sheep and 1.53% in cattle. Of the 12 L. monocytogenes isolates, seven (58.33%) and five (41.66%) belonged to serotypes 1 and 4, respectively. Other species isolated were L. innocua, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. murrayi and L. grayi. These results indicate that animal faeces could be a source of contamination of carcasses with L. monocytogenes and may lead to foodborne listeriosis.

To determine the relationship between biochemical parameters and production traits in sheep, 111 of the animals raised in the Bandırma Sheep Research Institute were used as living materials. The blood samples of 31 Hampshire Down x Merino, 33 Dorset Down x Merino, 27 German Black Headed x Merino and 20 Border Leicester x Merino crosses were taken. Transferrin (Tf) and haemoglobin (Hb) types were determined. Some production traits such as greasy fleece weight, staple length, fiber diameter, ondulance and lamb birth weight were estimated. Important correlations between Hb AB and lamb birth weights (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Tf B type and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino and Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) and Tf A type and lamb birth weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) were also determined.

Macroanatomical Studies On The Cranial Cervical Ganglion In Sheep, İsmai̇l Türkmenoğlu, Nejdet Dursun

In this study, the location and relations of the cranial cervical ganglion were investigated. A total of six sheep of different ages and both sexes were used. The cranial cervical ganlion lies medial to the occipitohyoid muscle, ventral to the jugular foramen, lateral to the longissimus capitis muscle and craniomedial to a common mass constituted by the glossopharyngeal, vagal, accessory and hypoglossal nerves and the condyloid artery. The colour and shape of the ganglion are light brown and fusiform respectively.

This study was conducted on sheep and goats to investigate theileriosis and tick infestations around Kayseri between August 1997 and October 1999. During this period a total of 300 small ruminants consisting of 250 sheep and 50 goats were microscopically examined for Theileria species. This study was carried out to investigate the fertility traits, survival rate and growth characteristics of Karayaka and Bafra (Chios x Karayaka B_1) genotypes. Karayaka and Bafra genotypes are raised in the Black Sea region of Turkey. In the study, fertility results for Karayaka and Bafra were determined to be 92.3 and 93.7% for birth rates, and 1.08 and 1.78 for litter size, respectively. The survival rates of Karayaka and Bafra lambs at weaning (90 days) were 93.6 and 91.9%, respectively. In this study, we aimed to investigate the regional profile of bovine and ovine Brucellosis in Burdur by isolating Brucella spp. in milk and by detecting antibodies to Brucellae in milk samples. For this purpose, 404 milk samples from 101 cows and 226 milk samples from 113 ewes located in 14 different areas of Burdur were collected. The samples were examined by bacteriological and serological methods. Brucella spp. were not isolated from the milk samples. Haemoglobin and transferrin types were investigated in Çine type sheep. Separation of transferrin (Tf) and haemoglobin (Hb) types was carried out using horizontal starch-gel and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, respectively. Three Hb A and 59 Hb B types, and 5 transferrin alleles (A, B, M, D, E) were isolated from Çine type sheep. Eight Tf phenotypes consisting of 3 homozygote types (Tf AA, Tf MM, Tf DD) and 5 hetorozygote types (Tf AM, Tf AD, Tf AE, Tf BD, Tf MD) were detected.

The objective was to determine the effect of periods of adjustment and duration of performance test on estimating genetic variance parameters for ADG. Variance components were estimated from ADG data collected from 1978 to 1984 on a total of 1,047 Targhee ewe and ram lambs at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station (Dubois, ID). Across all years, lambs averaged 84 ± 9 d of age and 25 ± 5.4 kg of weight when placed on test. Sexual performance has been subjectively measured with a libido test during screening of rams before public sale and breeding at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station from 1990 to 2000. The objective of this study was to determine whether sexual performance was genetically influenced. Sexual performance scores ranged from 1 to 6 with scores increasing from sexually inactive to highly sexually active in the presence of estrous ewes. The overall average score was 3.5 ± 0.02. This study was performed to investigate the presence of Eimeria species in the sheep population of Van. Stool samples were collected from 350 sheep in 10 geographically distinct locations (Van-centre, Saray, Çaldıran, Erçek, Edremit, Gürpınar and Güveçli, Bardakçı, Alaköy, Kavuncu villages) in Van province. Nine different Eimeria species were found in the examination of the stool samples. These species were E. parva (46.57%), E. ovinoidalis (43.14%), E. ahsata (39.42%), E. ovina (39.14%), E. crandallis (38.85%), E. pallida (33.14%), E. granulosa (16.57%) E. faurei (15.42%) and E. intricata (11.42%).
