Distribution And Morphology Of Mauremys Rivulata (Valenciennes, 1833) (Reptilia: Testudines: Geoemydidae) In The Lake District And Mediterranean Region Of Turkey, Di̇nçer Ayaz, Abi̇di̇n Budak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Morphometric measurements and color-pattern features of 62 samples of Mauremys rivulata from the Lake District (Göller Bölgesi) and the Mediterranean Region of Turkey were compared. Between populations, males apparently differed in 10 characters and females in 12 characters (independent t-test), but coefficient of difference (CD) values for these characters were not significant, and sexes were combined into a single group and compared with Aegean M. rivulata with respect to morphometric features. The greatest straight carapace length (SCL) observed in a male and female Aegean specimen was 215.0 mm and 214.0 mm, respectively. This paper also provides the first record of …

Biology Faculty Publications
The genus Eupsophus is characterized by endotrophic larvae that inhabit water-filled cavities. The larvae feed from large yolk reserves during metamorphosis. The external morphology has been described for four of the ten known species and data on larval chondrocranial morphology are available only for one. We describe the extema1 morphology, oral disc and chondrocranial anatomy of the larvae of Eupsophus queulensis. The characteristics of E. queulensis tadpoles are compared with those of other Eupsophus larvae.

Distribution Pattern And Morphological Differences Between The Sexes Of River Blenny, Salaria Fluviatilis (Asso, 1801), In The Ceyhan River Basin, Turkey, Ahmet Alp, Cemi̇l Kara
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The distribution of the river blenny (Salaria fluviatilis) in the Ceyhan River basin and the morphological differences between the sexes were investigated. Occurrence of the river blenny in the Ceyhan River basin depended on altitude of the habitats, and specimens were obtained at altitudes < 750 m. Samples were strongly female biased, which may have been due to the egg-guarding behavior of the males. There was also sexual dimorphism in that male blennies were larger than females (P < 0.05); however, there were no differences in the meristic counts between the sexes (P > 0.05). Analysis of variance showed that all of the standardized morphometric measurements were significantly different among the samples. In discriminant function analysis, morphological differentiation was determined between the sexes. Plotting discriminant function 1 to 2 separated the sexes from each other. Proportions of correctly classified individuals into their original groups were 71.9% for juveniles, 79.0% for …

Gonad Development And Sex Ratio Of Sharptooth Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus Burchell, 1822) Cultured Under Laboratory Conditions, Şehri̇ban Çek, Erdal Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In the present work, gonad development and sex ratio of sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus) cultured under laboratory conditions over 365 days from hatching were investigated histologically and morphologically. The maturation stage for both males and females was detected 295 days after hatching. Five and 6 developmental stages were indicated for testis and ovaries, respectively. The developmental pattern of ovaries was categorised as the group-synchronous type. The sex ratio of the 200 sampled fish was 90:110 (male:female) and this difference was not significant (P > 0.05). Additionally, final live mean weight of the males was higher than that of the females (P < 0.05). The beginning of vitellogenesis was in April and ovarian development peaked in July. These results suggest that 1-year-old male and female C. gariepinus can be used as brood stock for seed production under standard laboratory conditions.

Ecology And Morphological Comparison Between Rough Greensnakes (Opheodrys A. Aestivus) And Eastern Smooth Greensnakes (Opheodrys V. Vernalis) In West Virginia, Timothy Earl Baldwin
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Since 1971, documented Rough Greensnake (Opheodrys aestivus) occurrences in West Virginia have declined from approximately 100 to less than 20 occurrences in the last 10 years. In contrast to the decline of Rough Greensnakes in WV, Smooth Greensnake (O. vernalis) populations appear to be stable over the same period of time. Historic sites from the West Virginia Biological Survey were cross referenced with habitat descriptions in published literature to establish research locations. One hundred nineteen Rough and Smooth Greensnakes were measured for snout-vent length and total body length, and of these, 78 were measured in detail for external head morphology …

In this paper are presented the accounts of 13 identified bat species from a total of 628 captured specimens from 32 locations in Mongolia during three field expeditions. These species accounts include taxonomical, morphological, and ecological data resulting from observations and further analyses. As a result of this work the distribution of some bat species in Mongolia can be drawn in more detail. For instance, Vespertilio murinus is much wider distributed and abundant than the former records indicate. The Plecotus species were clearly identified by genetic analyses combined with morphological characteristics. Moreover, the second record for Eptesicus serotinus and the …
The Morphology, Taxonomy, And Distribution Of Specimens Of Darevskia Clarkorum (Sauria: Lacertidae: Darevskia) Collected From Turkey’S Eastern Black Sea Region, Çeti̇n Ilgaz
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In all, 103 specimens of Clark's lizard, Darevskia clarkorum (Darevsky and Vedmederja, 1977), from 6 localities in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey were examined in terms of pholidosis characteristics, morphometric measurements, and color and pattern features. Kolmogorov-Smirnov testing across all populations verified sexual dimorphism in the Ortacalar and Hemşin populations, regarding transversal series of ventral plates (P < 0.05). According to the Mann-Whitney U test, 16 pholidosis characteristics showed differences among the populations (P < 0.05). For comparison of morphometric measurements, 4 morphometric indices and ratios were developed. According to the results of independent t-testing, no differences were found between males and females among the populations. One-way variance analyses based on 4 morphometric indices and ratios confirmed that head index, snout-vent length/tail length, and tail length/total body length showed differences among the populations (P < 0.05). Regarding pholidosis characteristics (except rates of the presence of a masseteric plate and contact between the rostral and internasal plate), morphometric measurements, and color and pattern features, the specimens collected from 6 different localities were similar to D. clarkorum specimens mentioned in the literature. Furthermore, the known range of the species in Turkey has been extended.

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Currently, 4 species, Mesocricetus auratus, Mesocricetus raddei, Mesocricetus newtoni, and Mesocricetus brandti of the genus Mesocricetus are accepted as the valid taxa based on karyotype and morphologic features. A potential fifth species, Mesocricetus nigriculus, is under dispute and is currently listed as a subspecies of M. raddei, along with Mesocricetus raddei raddei and Mesocricetus raddei avaricus. UPGMA cluster analyses performed with biometrical measures confirm, only partially, the common separation of Mesocricetus hamsters into a Transcaucasian group with Mesocricetus newtoni, Mesocricetus brandti, and Mesocricetus auratus, and a Ciscaucasian group including the M. raddei subspecies. The status of M. nigriculus could not …

A Fresh Look At The Taxonomy Of Midcontinental Sandhill Cranes, Douglas H. Johnson, Jane E. Autin, Jill A. Shaffer
Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
The midcontinental population of sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) includes about 500,000 birds and provides valuable recreational crane-watching and hunting opportunities in Canada and the United States. It comprises three subspecies, one of which (G. c. rowani) was of uncertain taxonomic status and another of which (G. c. tabida) merited protection from excessive harvest due to its small population size. We obtained measurements of cranes used by Johnson and Stewart (1973) and additional crane specimens to 1) evaluate the subspecies designation of midcontinental sandhill cranes and 2) to seek improved methods for classifying cranes from …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Sixty-nine ciliate species were identified in 19 samples from a small pond covered by Lemna minor in Van, Turkey. Statistical analysis was employed to examine the relationships between ciliates and the physical and biological parameters. Total ciliate abundance appears to be related mainly with physical and biological factors such as the dissolved oxygen in the bottom layer and the volume of Lemna and temperature in the surface layer. Some species were investigated in detail using live observation, silver impregnation, and morphometry.

Our purpose in this study was to investigate and compare the morphological relationship between the true chordae tendineae (CT) and the false chordae tendineae (FCT). One hundred and forty-seven hearts (8 humans, 23 dogs, 91 sheep, 25 goats) were investigated in our study. In terms of CT number, while the difference between humans and sheep and goats, and dogs and sheep and goats was significant statistically (p < 0.05), the difference between humans and dogs was less significant than the others. The difference between sheep and goats was not significant statistically (p > 0.05). The number of FCT were not significant (p > 0.05) in the other species while the difference between humans and dogs was significant statistically. The numerical relationship between CT and FCT was positive …

The intrinsic membrane properties of the neurons in the cortices of the inferior colliculus were studied in 300-µm transversal slices. The membrane properties, including the sub- and superthreshold, of the neurons were determined by intracellular stimulations with current injections. Of 49 intracellularly recorded neurons, 21 were successfully stained with intracellular biocytin injection. Morphologically all of the 21 neurons were identified as multipolar. Physiologically three firing patterns (onset, regular and adapting) were identified on the basis of response patterns to depolarizing current injections. Onset neurons had a non-linear, and regular and adapting neurons had linear current-voltage relationships. In conclusion, with the …

This study was conducted to determine the morphological characteristics and to identify the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) genotypes husbanded in the Artvin and Ardahan cities of the northeastern Anatolia Region. A total of 84 worker bee experimental samples were collected from 8 apiaries in different locations. From each sample 20 workers were used and 19 morphological characteristics were measured biometrically. Samples used were collected from 3 regions of Ardahan (Ardahan-Center, Posof-Yeniköy and Posof-Süngülü) and from 5 different regions of Artvin province (Hamurlu, Kaşıkçı, Borçka-Camili, Şavşat-Kocabey and Muratlı). As a result of discrimination analysis there was found to be no variation …
