Walleye Sander vitreus and smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu were sampled monthly (May-October) from Lake Sharpe, South Dakota during 2006 and 2007 to estimate the timing of otolith annulus formation and to evaluate the influence of fish age, sex, and sample location (walleye only) on the timing and detection of annulus formation. Timing of annulus formation was evaluated using marginal increment analysis. Walleye samples were stratified by age, sex, and sample location (i.e., upper and lower Lake Sharpe) and smallmouth bass samples were stratified by age and sex. Sturgeons (Acipenseridae) have experienced world-wide declines as a result of anthropogenic effects such as over-harvest, habitat degradation, altered flow regimes, and pollution. Nearly all European and Asian sturgeon species have experienced population declines and have subsequently been classified as either threatened or endangered. North American sturgeons have experienced a similar plight in that all eight native sturgeon species are listed as endangered, threatened, or of special concern. Direct linkages between North American sturgeon declines and anthropogenic effects are difficult to assess due to scale considerations, fluctuating environmental conditions, difficulty in capture, and the interaction of all these effects. The growth of age-0 fishes influences survival, especially in temperate regions where size-dependent over-winter mortality can be substantial. Additional benefits of earlier maturation and greater fecundity may exist for faster growing individuals. This study correlated prey densities, growing-degree days, water-surface elevation, turbidity, and chlorophyll a with age-0 walleye Sander vitreus growth in a south-central Nebraska irrigation reservoir. Growth of age-0 walleye was variable between 2003 and 2011, with mean lengths ranging from 128 to 231 mm by fall (September 30th–October 15th). Transcriptome dynamics in the longissimus muscle (LM) of young Angus cattle were evaluated at 0, 60, 120, and 220 days from early-weaning. Bioinformatic analysis was performed using the dynamic impact approach (DIA) by means of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) databases. Between 0 to 120 days (growing phase) most of the highly-impacted pathways (eg, ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, drug metabolism, cytochrome P450 and Retinol metabolism) were inhibited. This study was carried out to determine some biological characteristics of Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda Bloch, 1793) from the Gallipoli Peninsula and Dardanelles (northeastern Mediterranean, Turkey) between September 2006 and October 2009. The length-weight relationship was estimated as W = 0.0020TL^{3.41} (r^2 = 0.96) for females, W = 0.0029TL^{3.32} (r^2 = 0.97) for males, and W = 0.0028TL^{3.32} (r^2 = 0.97) for all samples. Age and growth of swordfish, Xiphias gladius, were determined from 205 specimens (total n = 1408), collected from onboard a swordfish fishery fleet and from a wholesale fish market between June 2008 and July 2011. The length and weight distribution of all fish samples ranged from 51 to 242 cm and from 0.85 to 171.0 kg, respectively. The 70-80 cm lower jaw fork length range of swordfish had the highest ratio (approximately 57%). The length-weight relationship showed a positive allometric growth (b = 3.32; r^2 = 0.969). The growth and reproduction of brown comber (Serranus hepatus Linnaeus, 1758) were studied using specimens collected from the central Aegean Sea between July 2004 and June 2007. A total of 2410 specimens were analyzed, and of those, 2290 individuals were mature and 120 individuals were juvenile. Analyses covered all individuals because the species is a simultaneous hermaphrodite. The length-weight relationship was determined as W = 0.013L^{3.11}, indicating a positive allometric growth for all samples. The first objective of these two studies was to evaluate genetic trends for bulls that have comprised the LSU AgCenter Dean Lee performance bull test for the past 55 years. Data included birth weight (BW), initial weight, 112-day weight, average daily gain (ADG), adjusted yearling weight, and scrotal circumference (SC), on 7,488 yearling bulls of 34 breeds on 112d of test for the last 55 years. Despite the ecological importance and globally threatened status of freshwater bivalves, the freshwater mussel fauna of Turkey has hitherto received little attention. The aim of this study was to describe the ecology of freshwater mussels of the Lake Sapanca basin (northwest Turkey) to provide baseline data against which to measure future trends. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of substitution of soybean meal (SBM) with dehulled-micronized peas (Pisum sativum) in diets of guinea fowl broilers on their growth performance, carcass yields, and fatty acid composition of meat. One hundred forty 1-d-old guinea fowl keets were randomly assigned to 2 dietary treatments, which were fed from hatch to 12 wk. The birds were fed 2 wheat middling-based diets comprising a control diet, which contained SBM (78 g/kg) and a test diet containing dehulled-micronized peas (180 g/kg) as the main protein source. Pristane is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon that is generated by copepods in marine ecosystems. Organisms that eat copepods do not readily metabolize pristane, which causes it to accumulate throughout the marine food web. Understanding how pristane affects marine fish is essential because pristane is often used as a bioindicator in lab studies and may be influencing results in those studies. Also, this hydrocarbon may significantly reduce growth of marine fish in the wild. A previous study indicated that pristane is an appetite suppressant and growth retardant in fish. Within the wide distribution of spirlin in Iran, populations of this species inhabit a great variety of habitats, including qanats. We hypothesized that qanats may contribute to habitat-specific variation in the life history of the fish. To test this, a total of 240 specimens of Alburnoides bipunctatus, caught in the qanat of Uzineh (northern Iran) from October 2007 to August 2008, were examined for life history attributes. A feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimal dietary crude protein requirement for Rutilus frisii kutum fingerlings. Five isoenergetic experimental diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (32%, 37%, 42%, 47%, and 52%). Triplicate groups of 80 kutum (average weight 0.5 g) were stocked in 250-L tanks and fed to apparent satiation 3 times a day for 8 weeks. The results indicate that the growth performance and feed utilization of kutum were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by dietary protein level. The second polynomial regression of weight gain against protein level yielded an estimated optimal dietary protein requirement of 41.6%. Weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed efficiency increased with increasing the dietary protein level from 32% to 42%, but decreased significantly (P < 0.05) with further increases in dietary protein. The protein efficiency ratio was inversely correlated with dietary protein level. Feed intake was not affected (P > 0.05) by dietary protein level. Carp (17.8 ± 1.21 cm; 52.14 ± 7.13 g) were transferred to 21 tanks previously adjusted with 7 different pH values: 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0. The blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, represents an ecologically and economically important component of marine and estuarine ecosystems. In Florida, blue crab landings accounted for $9.6 million dollars during the 2010 fishing season. Accurate stock assessments for this valuable fishery are essential. Age is a critical biological component of accurate stock assessments; however, blue crabs and other crustaceans are especially difficult to age because of the complex nature of discrete growth. This study was designed to characterize the growth parameters of the albacore, Thunnus alalunga, in the eastern Mediterranean. A total of 819 albacore specimens were collected from gillnet boats operating in Antalya Bay (in the Levantine Sea) between May and July from 2006 to 2008. Individuals were all between 55 and 101 cm in fork length (FL). The fork length was directly proportional to weight, with a relationship of W = 0.00042FL^{2.246} for females, W = 0.00022FL^{2.396} for males, and W = 0.00016FL^{2.467} for males and females combined. The overall objective was to compare reproductive performance through 4 parities of gilts developed with ad libitum access to feed or with restriction of energy to 75% of ad libitum intake. Effects on growth and pubertal development are reported. The experiment was a 2 × 2 factorial with 661 gilts. Settlement and growth of quagga mussels Dreissena rostriformis bugensis were monitored in Lake Mead, NV, USA, where the first dreissenid occurrence was confirmed in the western United States. To measure the settlement rate of these invasive mussels, seven acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) pipes were attached to a line in shallow water (7.7 m below the surface) since November 23, 2007; eight ABS pipes were placed on another line in deep water (13.4 m below the surface) since January 3, 2008. We investigated the length distribution, sex ratio, sex inversion length, length-weight relationship, age, growth, spawning period, age and length at first maturity of the common pandora inhabiting İzmir Bay. A total of 2654 common pandora were collected by trawl hauls of İzmir Bay (Turkey) between January 2002 and June 2007. The size of the samples ranged from 4.1 cm (0.95 g, February) to 27.8 cm (207.30 g, April) in total length. Length distribution, sex ratio, length-weight relationship, age, growth, spawning period, age, and length at first maturity of four-spotted goby inhabiting İzmir Bay were investigated. A total of 1696 four-spotted goby were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007. The size of the fish sampled ranged from 3.1 to 9.2 cm total length. The length-weight relationship for both sexes of 21 fish species caught in Argolikos Gulf (central Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean), using a variety of fishing gear, was estimated for the first time. Fishing took place between August 2007 and August 2008, and the fishing gear used included gill and trammel nets, long lines, and beach seines from 58 inshore fishing vessels. Individuals caught by trammel nets were usually longer and heavier than those collected by other fishing gear. The effect of daily minimum dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration on the growth and yield of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and channel catfish hybrids (female channel catfish × male blue catfish I. furcatus) sharing the Jubilee strain of channel catfish as the maternal parent was evaluated in a 234-d study in sixteen 0.1-ha earthen ponds (15,113 fish/ha). Ponds were managed to maintain a minimum DO concentration of 25% or 50% of saturation. We studied the Flat-tailed Horned Lizard, Phrynosoma mcallii, and the Sonoran Horned Lizard, P. goodei, in an area of narrow sympatry near Yuma, Arizona, and found they overlapped broadly in use of available food resources, body size, and growth rates. We compared diet (Chapter 2), growth and reproduction (Chapter 3), and survivorship (Chapter 4) of P. mcallii and P. goodei during two years of drought followed by a year of higher-than-average rainfall. We predicted that P. mcallii would be more tolerant of drought conditions than its congener, since P. mcalliiis found only in an extremely arid region while …
