Reproduction Of Black Drum, Pogonias Cromis, From The Chesapeake Bay Region, Brian K. Wells, Cynthia M. Jones

Ovaries of black drum, Pogonias cromis, collected from the Chesapeake Bay region in 1992, were used to describe reproductive strategy and fecundity. Histological examination showed that black drum spawn in the Chesapeake Bay region from April through early June. Distributions of oocyte diameter showed distinct oocyte-developmental groups indicating that Chesapeake Bay black drum are group-synchronous batch spawners. Female black drum are extremely fecund ranging from 414,000 to 3,736,000 hydrated oocytes (mean = 1,389,000) per batch with a spawning periodicity of 3.8 days. Infection with the parasite Diplostomum sp. can lead to severe ocular pathology and may result in host mortalities in commercial fish farming. Here we show that such infection is rife in a major lake used for fishing in Turkey. In a study of Acanthobrama marmid fish in Keban Dam Lake, Elazığ, Turkey, we found the infection period was normally between May and September each year, and that the prevalence and abundance of eye lens parasites reached a maximum in September. Seafoods are very perishable, and many different methods are used for the determination of their quality. Sensory and hypoxanthine values of cold stored trout burgers, which we prepared, were determined during a 28-day period. Burgers spoiled after the 21st day of storage. The TVB-N values were still very low when the burgers spoiled and the pH values decreased during their storage. Therefore total volatile bases nitrogen and pH analyses were not useful for the determination of the quality of trout burgers. This study was performed to establish techniques used in the isolation and identification of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and investigate the presence of V. parahaemolyticus in fish and clams. Between June 1998 and June 2000, a total of 46 fish samples including 14 anchovies, 12 whiting, 10 horse mackerel and 10 sardines collected from fish markets in Bursa and a total of 70 clam samples collected from shellfish stations in Sakarya and Kocaeli districts were tested for V. parahaemolyticus. In this study Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd contents were analyzed in liver and muscle tissues of ten fish species (Mullus barbatus, Mugil cephalus, Trachurus trachurus, Pagellus acarne, Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus auratus, Sardinella aurita, Boops boops, Scomber japonicus, Solea solea) caught in the Gulf of Antalya in January, February and March 2000. Cu and Zn contents were found to be 0.51-3.66 mg/kg and 3.17-11.36 mg/kg in fish muscles and 0.83-4.44 mg/kg and 3.97-15.14 mg/kg in liver tissue respectively. Estuaries provide high quality nursery habitat for larval fishes due to high productivity, predator protection, and warm temperatures. Previous studies suggest that larval naked gobies (Gobiosoma bosci) are capable of upriver migration and estuarine retention despite net seaward flow. Gobiosoma bosci larvae were collected at a fixed site in the Hudson River estuary in late July of 1998 from 4 discrete depths to provide a time-series of depth-stratified abundance during both a spring and a neap tide. Larvae were concentrated at depth, indicating that depth preference behavior is present and will likely contribute to up-river transport. Harmonic regression …

Lupins are the harvested seed of species from the Lupinus genus, a group within the leguminous bean and pea family Fabaceae. Legumes are particularly valuable agricultural crops because of their capacity to provide a grain crop and also fix and return nitrogen to soils and improve the soil value for further cropping. The oilseeds, soybeans and peanuts are also leguminous plants, though traditionally they have been cropped for their oil value, whereas lupins, are cropped for both their protein and nitrogen fixing value (Gladstones, 1998; Perry et al., 1998).

Larval myomere counts of Nocomis platyrhynchus were made using a dissecting light microscope equipped with polarizing filters, and then compared to those of the three other species of Nocomis (Nocomis leptocephalus, Nocomis micropogon, and Nocomis raneyi) found in Virginia. Average preanal myomere counts for N. platyrhynchus (26.9) were significantly different from those of the other three species (N. raneyi =28.7; N. micropogon =26.0; and N. leptocephalus =25.9). A total of 188 young-of-year (YOY) striped bass, Morone saxatilis, and 199 YOY white perch, Morone americana, were collected by pushnet, seine and trawl during 24-hour periods from June through August, 1992 in lower James River, Virginia. The purpose was to identify prey and temporal and spatial feeding habits. Copepods were the most numerous prey of both species. Fishes and mysids comprised the largest volumetric percentage of diets of striped bass and white perch, respectively. In this study, taking the extensor muscle out of the pectoral fin of trout, lipid and mitochondria contents of muscle fibres were examined. Succinic dehydrogenase and Sudan black B stain methods were applied on the sections removed by freezing microtomy. Haematoxylen and eosin staining were also applied on the sections obtained from paraffin blocks. It was observed histologically that nuclei of muscle fibre were located just under the sarcolemma. This paper provides brief data on the distribution, morphology, biology and way of life of the fishes inhabiting rivers located in Chatkal Biosphere Reserve. The rivers of this reserve are inhabited by cold-loving fishes adapted to mountain conditions. These fishes are characterized by low fecundity, bigger size of eggs and a slower growth. Most of these fishes are small inhabitants of stony-pebble parts of the rivers and are capable of pressing themselves to the bottom and hiding themselves behind stones.

This study was carried out to determine the fish fauna of the basin of Büyükçekmece Dam Lake and to study the taxonomic characteristics of the fish present. As a result of examined the 586 specimens collected between April 1995 and September 1997, it was revealed that 23 fish species, including 4 subspecies, belonging to 10 families, were found in the basin of Büyükçekmece Dam Lake. In this study, effects of 5‰, 10‰, 15‰ and 20‰ NaCl concentrations on the accumulation of copper in liver, gill and muscle tissues of Tilapia niloticawere studied over experimental periods of 1, 7, 15 and 30 days at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 ppm copper in the medium. The highest levels of copper were found in the liver and the lowest values in the muscle tissue in a given NaCl and metal concentration. The effect of glazing with the solutions contained ascorbic acid (AA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), BHT/BHA combination and only water, and storage time on lipid oxidation of chub mackerel were determined during frozen storage at -18°C for 10 months. Glazing with some antioxidants or water of the fish retarded lipid oxidation when compared to control samples during frozen storage. In this study, 80 carp specimens (Cyprinus carpio) (16 fish from each station) of ages between 1-2 were caught at five stations in the upper Sakarya river basin the four seasons between October 1995 and October 1996. The structural changes of gill, liver and spleen tissue of the carp were examined. The gills of fishes which live in aquatic habitat exhibit tissue lesions caused by water pollutants, because they are in direct contact with their environment. Satus Creek provides critical habitat for the Yakima River Basin steelhead. A diverse community of riparian vegetation is important for healthy fish habitat; vegetation changes can affect shade, cover, channel structure, water quality, and food availability. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and illustrate riparian vegetation change, both temporally and spatially, along three separate reaches of Satus Creek. A Geographic Information Systems approach was applied to assess the vegetation change by comparing plant species composition and density on 1949 and 1995 aerial photographs. Concentrations of cadmium, lead, copper, chromium and nickel were determined in the gill, liver and muscle of Cyprinus carpio, Barbus capito and Chondrostoma regium caught at 5 stations on the Seyhan river system. Heavy metal concentrations in the tissues tended to vary significantly among stations, and one station thought to be contaminated by hospital effluents showed particularly high metal concentration. Liver and gill tissues showed higher metal concentrations than muscle tissue. Based on three years of data collection on the periodicity of the spawning run, the gonadosomatic index (GSI), and gonad histology, the spawning season for Chesapeake Bay black drum was found to be significantly shorter and later compared to populations from Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. The GSI is maximal in early April when black drum first enter the Chesapeake Bay region in contrast to data from Florida where GSI peaks during February and March. Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, collected from commercial catches in Chesapeake Bay and in Virginia and North Carolina coastal waters during 1988-1991 (n=1,967) were aged from transverse otolith sections. Ages 1-8 were recorded, but eight-year-old fish were rare. Marginal increment analysis showed that for ages 1-7, annuli are formed once a year during the period April-May. Otolith age readings were precise: >99% agreement within and between readers. Observed lengths-at-age were highly variable and growth rate decreased after the first year. Despite the high variability in sizes-at-age, observed lengths for ages 1-7 fit the von Bertalanffy growth model (r2=0.99; n=753) well. …

The gastric evacuation rates of brown trout Salmo trutta (0.9–1.6 kg) feeding on fingerling rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (3.5–7.6 g) were measured in the laboratory at five temperatures (4.5, 9.0, 14.0, 19.0, and 22.5°C). Instantaneous gut evacuation rates (Re) increased exponentially with temperature (T): Re = 0.053se^0.073T, r^2 = 0.98; they varyied from 7%sh^–1 at 4.5°C to 29%sh^–1 at 22.5°C. Linear regressions described the relationship between time and qualitative measures of fish digestion, thus allowing investigators to determine how long an ingested fish would be identifiable at different temperatures. The summer steelhead, Oncorhynchus mykiss population was studied in three intermittent tributaries in the Satus Creek Basin. There was a strong tendency for post emergent fry, resulting from redds located in intermittent reaches to move downstream. However, survival to perennial flow conditions was very low. Steelhead production in Dry Creek appears to be lower than in Logy Creek, because of elevated water temperatures and minimal spring and summer stream flow.

I investigated the interaction of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and their dominant forage fish populations, Utah chub (Gila atraria) and kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), in Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Wyoming-Utah. Through bioenergetics modeling, I quantified the consumption dynamics of the lake trout population. From hydroacoustics analyses, I quantified the density and biomass of the two dominant forage fish populations.

Toxaphene is reported to cause defects in the collagen of fish. Chronic exposure to toxhaphene weakens the backbone of fish by decreasing the amount of collagen and usually increasing the amount of calcium in the bone which results in a more brittle and fragile bone.

We investigated the possible direct action of toxaphene on collagen synthesis by exposing vertebral and swim bladder organ cultures obtained from unexposed rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) fingerlings to the same lot of toxaphene found to cause this defect in vivio.
