Detection Of Antibodies Reactive With Ehrlichia Canis In A Kennel In Bulgaria, Ilia Tsachev

A seroepidemiological study on Ehrlichia canis infection was performed in 16 dogs in a kennel in the region of Plovdiv in Bulgaria. For this purpose, anti-E. canis antibodies were detected by the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test. The results showed that 75% of the dogs examined were positive to E. canis. The antibody titres 1:100, 1:200 and 1:400 were detected.

Systemic candidiasis is a rare disease of animals. In this study, the clinical course, and cultural and pathological findings of systemic candidiasis are described and presumed predisposing factors are investigated in 3 dogs. Pathologically, pyogranulomatous lesions in various organs were present in all dogs. Blastospores, pseudohyphae, and true hyphae of Candida albicans were observed with periodic acid Schiff, Gomori's methenamine silver, and immunohistochemistry. Administrations of broad-spectrum antibiotics and corticosteroids and, in one dog, parvoviral infection were thought to be predisposing factors leading to opportunistic infection. The combined effect of immunosuppressants and antibiotics might have led to Candida colonization and dissemination …

Cataract surgery was planned on 41 ERG positive eyes of 25 dogs of which 9 had unilateral and 16 had bilateral cataracts. Phacofragmentation and aspiration surgery was performed on 32 eyes of 20 dogs (and ECCE was performed on 4 eyes and ICCE was performed on 5 eyes of 5 dogs) of different breeds, sexes and ages. Vision restoration and complications were evaluated postoperatively in the short term (4 weeks). Mean age of the 20 dogs was 7.3 years. In this study, the normal incudomalleal (IM) joint surface of dogs was studied by SEM. The animals under the Ketamine + Xylazine (5/2 mg/kg. iv.) anesthesia, were perfused with 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution in 0.1 M sodium potassium phosphate buffer pH 7.2 via left ventricle. Middle ear ossicles were processed with routine histological procedures for SEM and examined under a Philips 505 type SEM. The articular surfaces of malleus and incus showed similar configuration and micromorphology. Two burial chambers dating back to 1000 BC have been brought to light in the Van-Yoncatepe necropolis in Eastern Anatolia. In these two chambers (M5 and M6), plenty of skeletal remains belonging to dogs buried together with humans were discovered. The finds were a dog skeleton lying in-situ in burial chamber M5 and a number of bones scattered in three layers in burial chamber M6. Humeral and femoral circumferences were used to estimate the body weight of these dogs, and the data obtained from these measurements enabled us to further our knowledge of the formats of Van-Yoncatepe dogs. This study includes 6 dogs naturally infected with Dirofilaria immitis of different ages and sexes. Clinical, radiographical, blood gas and blood biochemical evaluations were examined in the preoperative period. Microfilariae were determined in 6 cases with a modified Knott test. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and open-heart surgery were carried out. Animals were prepared for cannulation under general anesthesia. The heart was approached by right lateral thoracotomy. This study presents the results of the analyses of the coprolite material found among the skeletal remains in M6, a burial chamber discovered in the necropolis of the Van-Yoncatepe Castle, which dates back to the beginning of the 1^{st} millennium BC (Early Iron Age). For this purpose, microbiological and parasitological examinations, as well as biochemical analyses have been carried out. Because the crystallisation values were so high, the parasite evidences could not been revealed. As a result of the microbiological examination, no micro-organisms were isolated. The aim of this study was the determination and comparative evaluation of the seroprevalence of Brucella canis infection in dog sera obtained from different dog shelters located in İstanbul and İzmir provinces by tube agglutination test (TAT), 2-mercapto-ethanol tube agglutination test (2ME-TAT) and ELISA. A total of 362 serum samples were obtained from 8 different dog shelters in İstanbul and İzmir provinces. The dogs were temporarily kept in these shelters. Of the 362 serum samples, 46 (12.7%), 28 (7.73%) and 27 (7.45%) were found to be positive by TAT, 2ME-TAT and ELISA, respectively. Dogs in 6 (75%) out of the …

Three hundred eighty stray dogs (232 female and 148 male) from İstanbul and İzmir were tested with antigen detecting ELISA for Dirofilaria immitis infection. Blood samples were collected between November 2002 and April 2003. D. immitis infection was found in 4 dogs tested. Seroprevalence among these dogs in İstanbul was 1.52%. Seroprevalence was the highest (2.22%) in the 3-6-year-old age group, followed by 1.02% in the 1-3-year-old age group. However, there was no significant difference between these age groups (P > 0.05). No significant difference between male and female dog groups was observed in İstanbul (P > 0.05). Antigenic specificity was investigated in dogs experimentally infected with Taenia hydatigena using SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. Cysticercus tenuicollis cysts from sheep were given to the puppies in the experimental group. Experimental infection was achieved in the animals of the experimental group at 11-13 weeks, and infected animals were necropsied and mature Taenia hydatigena worms were collected. Antigen was prepared from the fluids of C. tenuicollis. Sera from both experimental and control groups were tested by Western blotting. Our objective was to investigate hepatobiliary functions in healthy dogs using ^{99m}Tc-mebrofenin hepatobiliary scintigraphy (HBS): 200 µCi/kg ^{99m}Tc-mebrofenin was injected intravenously into 12 healthy adult dogs. One-hour dynamic images and 2, 4 and 24 h static images were obtained. HBS was evaluated for 7 variables. Cardiac washout occurred within 3 min in all dogs. A photophenic area in the region of the gall bladder was seen in 3.03 ± 0.21 min. However, bile ducts were not identified as separate structures in any dogs. The results of antigenic characterization of canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV2) isolated from the feces of 60 dogs with hemorrhagic enteritis are reported. Antigenic characterization was carried out by comparing the reactivity pattern of 4 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to CPV2 in the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test. CPV2 was detected in 21 out of 60 dogs (35%) and antigenic typing was able to be performed for only 16 dogs with >=1:8 titers. Nine samples were characterized as CPV2a and 7 as CPV2b, indicating that the CPV2a variant was more common than CPV2b in dog populations in Bursa province in Turkey.

A 14-year-old male cocker spaniel was diagnosed with sebaceous gland adenoma in the right external ear canal. Macroscopically, a whitish nodular mass, 3.1 x 3.5 x 2.2 cm in size, moderate to firm in consistency, was seen. The cut surface of the tumoral mass was solid. In the microscopical examination, the tumoral mass was formed by many lobules composed of 2 types of different cells (basaloid and sebaceous cells). Because of the mass within the external ear canal, the dog had severe otitis externa and problems in hearing.

The present study was performed to investigate the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) in dogs, and to evaluate protrusive changes in the mitral valve by echocardiographic examination. Thirty-five dogs were examined, including those observed clinically normal, and animals with suspected cardiac disease displaying lethargy, coughing, dyspnea, exercise intolerance, or syncope. The echocardiographic examination revealed 19 (54.2%) of the dogs to have MVP, whereas 16 (45.7%) had a normal mitral valve. The faecal carriage rate of Listeria monocytogenes in stray dogs in Bursa province, Turkey, was determined from 82 faecal samples by bacteriological methods. L. monocytogenes was isolated from only one (1.22%) of the samples examined. The isolate was serotyped as 1/2b. It was concluded that stray dogs could be a reservoir of the organism as well as a source of human listeriosis in Turkey. This is the first report on the isolation of L. monocytogenes from a dog in this country.

A Serological Evidence Of Minute Virus Of Canines (Mvc; Canine Parvovirus Type-1) In Dogs In Turkey, Serhat Torun, Zeki̇ Yilmaz, Annamaria Pratelli

Serological evidence of minute virus of canines (MVC; canine parvovirus type-1) was investigated for the first time in dogs in Turkey. Dogs with various clinical symptoms including primarily gastrointestinal and respiratory system disorders were used. Immunofluorescence (IF) test was performed to determine whether anti-MVC antibodies were present in the serum samples. MVC antibodies were found in 18 out of 100 dogs (18.0%) tested, indicating that MVC is present in dogs in Turkey. The present result is additional evidence for the worldwide distribution of MVC.

The objectives of this experiment were to induce prostate atrophy by ligating prostate vessels and nerves and evaluate the histological changes in the prostates. Animal material consisted of 10 normal (healthy) crossbred dogs. The branches of the prostate artery, prostate veins, prostate innervating nerves, and hypogastric and pelvic nerves were ligated and then cut for each of the dogs under general anesthesia. Three months after surgery, the dogs were euthanased by with an overdose of sodium pentobarbital. A 1-year-old male German Shepherd dog was brought in because its hard palate had been damaged by the left mandibular canine tooth. On inspection of the oral structure, lingual deviation to the interproximal area between the upper canine and lateral incisor of the left mandibular canine tooth and mild palatal trauma were seen. The effects of ethanol and 4-methyl pyrazole were investigated in the treatment of 30 dogs toxicated with antifreeze (AF). The AF toxication produced significant increases in blood urea, creatinin and potassium and a decrease in blood calcium levels. Calcium-oxalate monohydrate, which is pathognomic for AF toxication, was consistently seen in urine sediment. Ethanol was rarely effective on the multisystemic effects that occurred in dogs or ADH inhibition. CNS findings were also observed after ethanol administration. The results indicated that 4-MP treatment provided earlier and safer healing than ethanol. It was deduced that 4-MP + NaHCO_3 was more effective than ethanol …

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria immitis infection in dogs housed outdoors in Aydın province and Selçuk in western Turkey. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were evaluated in sera samples by IFA and ELISA techniques. The presence of D. immitis microfilariae was determined in blood samples by use of the modified Knott’s test. Using the IFA and ELISA on 158 dogs surveyed, 5 (3.2%) were positive for anti-Leishmania antibodies while 22 (13.9%) were found infected with D. immitis. Investigation Of Blood Protein Polymorphism And Estimation Of Genetic Distances In Some Dog Breeds In Turkey, Meti̇n Erdoğan, Ceyhan Özbeyaz

Phylogenetic relationships in some Turkish dog breeds were investigated to determine protein polymorphisms by electrophoretic analysis. Blood samples were collected from 276 dogs including the Kangal, Akbash and German Shepherd as well as Doberman Pinscher, Setter, Pointer and Labrador breeds. Enzymes and proteins were separated electrophoretically using isoelectrofocusing gel, starch gel and polyacrylamide gel. Polymorphism on albumin (Alb), postalbumin-1 (Poa-1), postalbumin-3 (Poa-3), transferrin (Tf), and esterase (ArE) loci was detected, while no polymorphism was observed on the hemoglobin (Hb) locus. Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy In The Dog: 18 Cases, Kürşat Özer, Kemal Altunatmaz, Ahmet Gülçubuk

Hypertrophic osteodystrophy was diagnosed in 16 male and 2 female puppies aged between 2.5 and 8 months. All animals had stiff and stilted gait, painful swellings in the metaphyseal areas of the antebrachium and tibia, pyrexia, weakness and diarrhoea as common symptoms. Radiological examination of the affected areas showed extraperiosteal bone proliferations. With chronicity, the new bone formation spanned the entire diaphysis from the distal to the proximal metaphysis. Two dogs were treated with parenteral administration of analgesics, corticosteroids, vitamin C, and antibiotics in addition to dietary management. In the present study, bone tumor samples obtained from 18 dogs and 21 cats from various clinics between 1986 and 2000 were clinically and pathologically examined at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara. Most bone tumors examined were from 5-8-year-old dogs (43.75%) and cats (45%). A significant decrease was detected in animals over 8 years old. These tumors were observed in large breeds, mostly in German shepherd (38.4%) and Anatolian shepherd (Kangal) (15.4%) dogs. Tumors were seen in 10 male (66.7%) and 5 female (33.3%) dogs , and 11 male (61.1%) and 7 female (38.9%) cats. …

This study sought to determine the roles and effectiveness of findings obtained from radiographic examinations of lungs in the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases and to place radiographic findings into routine practice in dogs and cats. Fifty-eight dogs and 27 cats of different breeds, sexes and ages suspected of having pulmonary disease were used as the study materials after clinical examination and anamnesis. The pulmonary radiographies of these cases were appropriately taken and radiographic findings were evaluated. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of isotonic sodium chloride (ISS-0.9%), hypertonic sodium chloride (HSS-7.2%), HSS + lactate ringer solution (LRS) and HSS + sodium bicarbonate solution (SBS-1.3%) in the treatment of dogs with endotoxaemia. Endotoxaemia was induced by slow injection of a 1 mg/kg/i.v. dose of E. coli endotoxin (0111:B4). At the treatment stage, four groups, each composed of six dogs, were formed and a different treatment plan was carried out in each group: ISS, HSS, HSS + LRS and HSS + SBS. Sixteen dogs with suspected colitis and ulcerative colitis were examined by clinical, radiographic, laboratory and electrocardiographic means from a diagnostic perspective. In the history and clinical examination, mild diarrheic feces mixed with uncoagulated blood and mucus were determined in all dogs. Tenesmus after defecation, mild weight loss and anemia were common observations. Abdominal palpation revealed a palpable thickened large intestine. Biochemical analyses of blood serums showed that potassium levels were increased, and sodium and total protein levels were decreased. The aim of this study was to demonstrate normal duplex patterns of extra (aorta abdominalis, vena cava caudalis) and intraparenchymatous (vena porta, vena hepatica, renal interlober and splenic artery) vessels with color-coded duplex ultrasonography in healthy dogs. While the wave form of the intraparenchymatous vessels like the vena cava caudalis and hepatic vein were mainly affected by the pressure conditions of the intrathoracic and intraabdominal pressure changes due to respiration and cardiac pulsations, portal blood flow was not affected.
