Cook et al. (2018) provide a fascinating demonstration of amygdala activation in dogs when they witnessed their owners giving food to another (fake) dog, but not when they placed food in a bucket. Dogs’ neurological responses were positively correlated with their reported levels of ‘dog-directed aggression’ as measured by the C-BARQ, and dogs with initially strong amygdala responses habituated on subsequent trials. The authors interpret their findings as possible evidence for an emotion akin to jealousy in dogs. However, alternate interpretations involving either dog aggression/fear or emotional responses to food seem more plausible and avoid the welfare risks associated with …

Domestic dogs are highly social and have been shown to be sensitive not only to the actions of humans and other dogs but to the interactions between them. We used the C-BARQ scale to estimate dogs’ aggressiveness, and we used noninvasive brain imaging (fMRI) to measure activity in their amygdala (an area involved in aggression). More aggressive dogs had more amygdala activation data while watching their caregiver give food to a realistic fake dog than when they put the food in a bucket. This may have some similarity to human jealousy, adding to a growing body of evidence that differences …

Radial carpal bone luxation is rarely encountered in dogs. A literature review did not reveal any case of bilateral radial carpal bone luxation or its treatment. In the current case study, the process and result of the treatment of a dog with bilateral radial carpal bone luxation, brought to the İstanbul University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine?s Department of Surgery is presented. Treatment of luxation was achieved by using screws and cerclage wire. The long-term follow-up of this patient was limited to only 2 months since the dog was not brought back to the clinic.

A 2.5-year-old small male Cavalier King Charles spaniel was brought to Ondokuz Mayıs University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital with symptoms of severe watery diarrhea, pain during defecation, intermittent cough, vomiting, and emaciation. Examination of the fecal smear revealed moderate infection of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae and two adult females. Counting of the larvae in feces was performed by Baermann method and 20 larvae were determined per gram of feces. The dog was treated with ivermectin (Avromec, 0.2 mg/kg subcutaneously) and multivitamin syrup (Vitabiol) for 5 days for supporting the body condition. This paper is the first clinical case report …

This study aimed to evaluate the hemostatic function by thromboelastography (TEG) and determine if there was an association between the changes in hemostatic parameters and serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). DCM was diagnosed by echocardiography in 19 dogs. Ten healthy dogs were selected as controls. Myocardial injury was confirmed by increased serum cTnI levels. Perineal hernia (PH) in dogs normally requires surgical reconstruction of the pelvic diaphragm. The use of fascia lata grafts has been reported and described in previous studies for the correction of PH after failure of the conventional herniorrhaphy. The purpose of this report is to describe a modified technique of fascia lata flap (FLP) for PH repair in dogs. Six client-owned male dogs with PH were included in the study. A 7-year-old Chow Pei was referred to an animal hospital for the evaluation of a 1-month history of abdominal distension and exercise intolerance. A systolic murmur was auscultated over the tricuspid valve (TV). Thoracic radiographs showed cardiomegaly, right atrial enlargement, and pulmonary edema. Electrocardiography revealed small QRS complexes and a right-bundle brunch block. Echocardiography also showed right atrial enlargement and tricuspid insufficiency due to the presence of a mass on the posterior leaflet of the TV. Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is a protozoal disease caused by Leishmania species. Dogs play an important role as a reservoir. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of CanL by molecular and serological techniques among stray dogs living in kennels in Aydın, Manisa, and İzmir, located in western Turkey. Blood samples were collected from a total of 191 dogs and analyzed using indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of autologous neurogenically induced bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (NIBM-MSCs) in two dogs suspected to have fibrocartilaginous embolic myelopathy (FCEM). Both dogs were paraplegic without deep pain perception (DPP) and tentatively diagnosed by MRI. Autologous NIBM-MSCs (5 × 106) were transplanted into the lumbar subarachnoid space two times with a 21-day interval for each patient. Based on a 21-month follow-up of the treated animals, the transplantation of NIBM-MSCs seems to be promising in subjects with FCEM lacking DPP.

The aim of this study was to detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori and Helicobacter heilmannii type II in dogs and evaluate the role of Helicobacter spp. İn chronic gastritis. Gastroscopy was performed in a total of 40 dogs (22 symptomatic and 18 asymptomatic) admitted to the small animal clinic of İstanbul University. Merkel cell tumors, a type of cutaneous round-cell tumors, are rarely observed in dogs and cats. This tumor type originates from cutaneous neuroendocrine cells. In the present study, the morphology of canine and feline Merkel cell tumors and their immunoexpression of neuron-specific enolase, cytokeratin, chromogranin A, Ki67, and metallothionein were evaluated using histopathological and immunohistochemical methods. The canine Merkel cell tumor displayed a diffuse morphological pattern, whereas the feline tumor displayed a solid morphological pattern. The study of canine cognition can be useful in understanding the ontology and selective pressures that affect the development of cognitive abilities. Dogs have undergone intensive artificial selection yielding distinctive breeds which differ both phenotypically and behaviorally. Breed based cognitive differences have not been found but some studies suggest there may be differences in broader categories such as working disposition and sex. Background: Brachycephalic dog breeds are increasingly common. Canine brachycephaly has been associated with upper respiratory tract (URT) disorders but reliable prevalence data remain lacking. Using primary-care veterinary clinical data, this study aimed to report the prevalence and breed-type risk factors for URT disorders in dogs. Results: The sampling frame included 170,812 dogs attending 96 primary-care veterinary clinics participating within the VetCompass Programme. The aim of this study was to determine concentrations of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and strontium (Sr) in the cartilage, compact bone, spongy bone, and cartilage with adjacent compact bone of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). The experiment was carried out on bones from the hip joints of 24 dogs (dogs of 8 years) from northwestern Poland. The concentrations of Mn, Fe, and Sr were assessed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Fe concentration was the highest in the cartilage and compact bone. Canine behaviours that are both desirable and undesirable to owners have a demonstrable genetic component. Some behaviours are breed-specific, such as the livestock guarding by maremmas and flank sucking seen in Dobermanns. While the identification of genes responsible for common canine diseases is rapidly advancing, those genes underlying behaviours remain elusive. The challenges of accurately defining and measuring behavioural phenotypes remain an obstacle, and the use of variable phenotyping methods has prevented meta-analysis of behavioural studies. International standardised testing protocols and terminology in canine behavioural evaluations should facilitate selection against behavioural disorders in the modern dog and optimise breeding success …

Cardiac tumors account for a small proportion of all canine tumors, but hemangiosarcoma represents the most frequent cardiac tumor in many species. Hemangiosarcoma occur intrapericardially with pericardial effusion. In this case report, a retrospective study was conducted on 9 cases of canine hemangiosarcoma. In all the dogs the presence of a pericardial exudate was noted and in 5 cases it was the only lesion detected during the examination. A 10-month-old, unilateral cryptorchid, male English bulldog underwent urethropexy for the treatment of urethral prolapse. Six hours after surgery the dog developed dysuria, haematuria, discomfort, severe penile oedema, inflammation, and inability to extrude the penis from the prepuce. Urethral patency was restored by placing an indwelling catheter into the urethral lumen. Penile swelling was managed with cold and warm compresses for 2 days, and antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and opioids for 4 days. Complete resolution of the swelling was evident by 3 days after surgery. One year after surgery the dog was reported to be in good health.

Both cattle and dogs were examined in modern and rural dairy farms that had a history of abortion over 5%. The blood samples were collected from 427 aborted cattle and the sera were tested using a commercial ELISA test kit. A 5-year-old mixed-breed dog presenting with diffuse lesions was diagnosed with cutaneous plasmacytoma. Sites where tumors occurred most often involved the skin of the facial areas, as well as that of the shoulder, neck, and back of the body. No systemic findings were present in spite of a significant enlargement of the lesions. The tumors varied in diameter, the largest being 5-10 cm. In older patients, it is important to minimise anaesthesia-related deaths and complications. In this study, 2 separate anaesthesia inductions were evaluated with respect to their effects on heart rate, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry data, intraocular pressure, and body temperature. A total of 22 dogs were evaluated and 2 separate anaesthesia groups were formed. Propofol (6 mg/kg) was administered to group G1 via a slow intravenous (IV) injection. In group G2, diazepam (0.5 mg/kg) was first administered via an IV injection, followed immediately by alfentanil (40 µg/kg), administered via a slow IV route. The patient was a 3-year-old English Setter that had been in contact with Thaumetopoea wilkinsoni larvae. Clinical examination revealed protrusion of the tongue outside of the mouth, edematous and swollen frenulum linguae and tongue, as well as a high amount of salivation. Necrotic and ulcerated areas were determined, particularly on the apex of the tongue. Treatment was carried out using systemic antihistamines, corticosteroids, antibiotics, vitamin C, and dexpanthenol, and the patient returned to good health.

A 7-year-old male American Cocker was referred to İstanbul University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Surgery Policlinics with imbalance, flabbiness in the left cheek muscles, increased salivation, alopecia, and hyperpigmentation. Complete blood count, blood biochemistry, and thyroid profile were recorded. Hypothyroidism and hypercholesterolemia were detected. Levothyroxine was applied orally. With regular drug therapy, thyroid hormones levels returned to normal ranges. The facial paralysis also disappeared completely, and the skin problems healed. This was the first patient with facial paralysis that originated from hypothyroidism and was diagnosed with clinical findings, laboratory methods, and electromyography in Turkey.

Increased lipid peroxidation due to reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress has been demonstrated in the neoplastic mammary tissue of dogs with malignant mammary tumors. Dietary factors implicated in ROS production may influence mammary cancer incidence or prognosis. Balanced diets (as commercial dog food is considered) may be more protective against oxidative damage than homemade diets. This clinical case concerns a male dog of Pointer breed, 10 years of age. The clinical examination revealed severe tenderness and a tension in the abdominal walls. The ultrasound examination detected fluid in the peritoneal cavity. The fluid collected from the peritoneal cavity displayed typical features of exudative fluid. In the cytological examination of the fluid, numerous stimulated endothelial cells, lymphocytes, and neutrophils were found. Elongated soft palate is a common upper airway anomaly in brachycephalic dogs. The scientific literature considering this pathology in nonbrachycephalic dogs is limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the importance of the elongated soft palate in nonbrachycephalic dogs (n = 10), carrying out, at the same time, a comparison with selected brachycephalic dogs (n = 19), on the effect of carbon dioxide laser staphylectomy. The selected population had only elongated soft palates and no other disorders. The surgery was rapid and uncomplicated; no suture material was used. The comprehensive recovery was significant (P < 0.0001): 68.4% of brachycephalic dogs and 100% of nonbrachycephalic dogs had complete recovery. The incomplete recovery in older brachycephalic dogs matched a more advanced pathologic phase. This study suggests that, in the case of high respiratory tract alteration and poor exercise tolerance, it is imperative to consider in differential diagnosis the elongated soft palate in nonbrachycephalic breeds, too; their clinical signs are less severe and frequently underestimated. The surgical treatment has a favorable prognosis when the only alteration is elongated soft palate. The carbon dioxide laser has been confirmed as an useful option for staphylectomy in dogs.

The case of a 3.5-year-old male Norwegian Elkhound crossbreed dog, seen the day after a traffic accident, is reported. Fractures in the symphysis mandibulae and the right corpus mandibulae were diagnosed. The apex linguae hung down laterally; a 2-cm cut wound was present on the right side.
