Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop
Managers of migratory game birds require accurate information about bird movements to delineate populations, protect important habitats, and regulate harvest. Data describing movements of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) belonging to the Pacific Flyway Population (PFP) are lacking. We used satellite telemetry to monitor movements of PFP lesser sandhill cranes (Grus c. canadensis) captured in the upper Cook Inlet and Bristol Bay regions of Alaska. Satellite transmitters were deployed on 19 flightless young (colts) and 3 adults over 3-years (2000-2002). Taxonomical states and the distribution of 40 Telescopus fallax specimens collected from various regions of Turkey over the past 35 years were evaluated. Information relating to a female Vipera barani and its 2 male juveniles, which were collected 35 km south of the provincial capital Adapazarı is presented. Biological information regarding the latter species is provided for the first time.

Specimens of Vipera eriwanensis and Vipera kaznakovi collected from northeastern Anatolia were examined in terms of morphological characters and compared with the relevant references. The distribution ranges of Vipera eriwanensis and Vipera kaznakovi were extended in Turkey by collecting specimens from new localities.

On the basis of the material collected and the observations made in the summer of 2003 in Turkey –mainly in eastern Anatolia– and some samples in the collection of Atatürk University, Entomology Museum, Erzurum, Turkey (EMET), an overview is given of the observed clearwing moths (Sesiidae) in Turkey from faunistic, distributional, and agro-economical points of view. Thirty-six species and subspecies in 11 genera have been recorded, of which Sesia pimplaeformis Oberthtür, Paranthrene diaphana Dalla Torre & Strand, Synanthedon andrenaeformis tenuicingulata ˘Spatenka and Pyropteron cirgisa (Bartel, 1912) are classified as endangered species and should be added to the red list. Two newly recorded Helophorus Fabricius, 1775 species/subspecies for the Turkish fauna, Helophorus (Atracthelophorus) shatrovskyi Angus, 1985 and H. (A.) leontis dixoni Angus, 1987, are compared against Turkish specimens (private collection). A list of subgenus Atracthelophorus species known from Turkey and their distribution in Turkey and worldwide is presented. The ecology of each examined species is discussed.

On The Distribution And Morphology Of The Steppe Viper, Vipera Eriwanensis (Reuss, 1933), From Gavur Mountain (Gümüşhane), Bi̇lal Kutrup, Ufuk Bülbül, Nurhayat Yilmaz

Vipera eriwanensis (Reuss, 1933), known only from the localities of the eastern Aras River in Turkey, was morphologically examined and compared with the related species on the basis of one additional specimen from Gavur mountain (province Gümüşhane), situated outside the known localities. This information changed our knowledge of the total distribution of V. eriwanensis, clearly showing that this taxon has expanded its range at least 210 km to the west in eastern Turkey. By the early 1900's, several large carnivores had been extirpated from Nebraska as a result of unrestricted hunting and trapping by early European settlers. Recently, there have been several confirmed records of carnivores that were once extirpated from Nebraska. In our study, we present new data for five species that recently were documented in Nebraska: Lynx canadensis, Ursus americanus, Canis lupus, Puma concolor, and Lontra canadensis. Restoration programs and legal protection afforded to these species in Nebraska and in adjacent states have allowed population numbers to increase. Because of the increase in populations of these …

Eared Grebes (Podiceps nigricollis) encounter a variety of climatic regimes in their annual cycle. The most dramatic occur while on staging areas in autumn. We investigated the thermoregulatory abilities of the Eared Grebe to determine how they coped with these climate changes during staging. The basal metabolic rate (BMR) was higher than predicted. Mass-specific BMR was 1.212 mL O2/g·h for birds averaging 317 g. The thermoneutral zone is wide and extended from 15°C to 38°C. Minimal thermal conductance and average body temperature were not unusual. We conclude that Eared Grebes live most of the year under thermoneutral conditions and that …

The Lepidoptera (Insecta) Fauna Of Düzce Province, Turkey, Süleyman Akbulut, Beşi̇r Yüksel, Aki̇f Keten

The lepidopteran species of Düzce province were investigated. To collect specimens, a sweep net and light traps were used. A total of 109 species belonging to 17 families of the order Lepidoptera were identified. The family Geometridae was represented by the highest number of species (20), followed by Noctuidae (19), Lycaenidae (12) and Nymphalidae (12). This was the first study to determine the Lepidoptera fauna of Düzce.

In this study, 180 mole-vole specimens collected from west, central, east and southeast Iran were investigated by morphological, biometrical and karyological methods. According to our findings, 3 different species, Ellobius fuscocapillus, Ellobius lutescens and Ellobius talpinus, are distributed in Iran. Karyological findings showed that E. fuscocapillus has 2n = 36 (NF = 58, NFa = 54), E. lutescens has 2n = 17 (NF = 34, NFa = 32) and E. talpinus has 2n = 52 (NF = 54, NFa = 50) chromosomes.

Three exotic fish species, Lepomis gibbosus (L., 1758), Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck & Schlegel, 1846) and Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782), were recorded in Topçam Dam Lake from a new locality in Asia Minor. The pumpkinseed sunfish, stone moroko and wild goldfish were found as a result of studies performed on the reservoir in Aydın province, Turkey, between June 1999 and June 2000. This study is one of the first records on the distribution of these fishes in Topçam Dam Lake, Anatolia. A Study On Micromys Minitus (Pallas, 1771) (Mammalia: Rodentia) In Turkish Thrace, Beytullah Özkan, Nuri̇ Yi̇ği̇t, Ercüment Çolak

Micromys minutus was recorded from six localities in Turkish Thrace. The external, cranial and karyological peculiarities of the specimens were determined. The dorsal colour of the specimens is dark brownish, being lighter on the sides, but the rostrum and cheek are markedly ochre. Mean tail length relative to body length is 90.5%, and the occipito-nasal length is 18.1 mm. The diploid number of chromosomes was 2n = 68 with NF = 136 and NFa = 132.

Ellobius lutescens is the only species of the genus Ellobius living in eastern Anatolia. They are highly adapted to underground life. There is no knowledge about the ecological peculiarities, population structures or detailed range of this species in Turkey. The morphological and karyological characteristics of 27 specimens of Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771) from the European part of Turkey were studied in detail and compared with those in the literature in order to provide a wider perspective on the taxonomic status of Apodemus agrarius in Turkey. In all the samples examined, 2n = 48 karyotype was observed with FN = 56 and FNa = 54. This study was conducted to determine helminth infections in tench (Tinca tinca), caught in Kapulukaya dam lake. The tench were transferred to the laboratory alive or recently dead. Thereafter, they were necropsied. Postmortem examination of the fish revealed that 84% were positive for various helminth species. Asymphylodora tincae (97.6%), Pomphorhynchus laevis (26.1%), metacercariae (15.4%), plerocercoids of Ligula sp. (5.9%) and nematode larvae (2.2%) were detected in infected fish. A. tincae was found in the intestine, P. laevis was found both in the intestine and in the abdominal cavity, plerocercoids of Ligula sp. were found only in the abdominal cavity, while …

Adult Leptodactylus silvanimhus are of moderate sized, the head is about as wide as long, and the hind limbs are moderate in length (see Table; also see Heyer and Thompson 2000 for definitions of adult size and leg length categories for Leptodacrylus). The male vocal sac is single and internal. Male forearms are hypertrophied in larger individuals. Adult males have two black thumb spines on each hand and lack chest spines. Individuals lack dorsolateral folds. The toe tips are narrow, not expanded. Females have weakly developed lateral toe fringes and males either have lateral toe ridges or weakly developed fringes. …

We conducted a herpetofaunal survey on the southern part of the Lake District in Anatolia searching and documenting new sites for herptile species. During the two years of our study three new sites, Gencek Lake (Derebucak/Konya), Derebucak (Konya) and Tınaztepe (Seydişehir/Konya), were recorded for Rana bedriagae caralitana. Of these, the two southernmost records extend the distribution of these subspecies in the Lake District of Anatolia.

In this study, 1812 Ephemeroptera nymphs were collected in order to determine the Ephemeroptera fauna of Lake Ulubat Basin between April 1996 and September 1999. The distribution of 38 species belonging to 22 genera and 10 families is presented. Among these, the genus Brachycercus Curtis, 1834 and the species Brachycercus harrisella Curtis, 1834 are recorded in Turkey for the first time. In addition, previous records on the distribution of all 38 species in Turkey are given.

Topotypes of Microtus guentheri were compared with specimens of the genus Microtus with 2n=54 chromosomes from western Anatolia. According to morphological and biometrical comparisons, it was determined that M. guentheri is a different species from Microtus lydius. The dorsal colour and the shape of the baculum distinguish M. guentheri from M. lydius morphologically. The present study includes the species Bracon (Glabrobracon ) osculator Nees, B. (G.) lividus Telenga, B. (G.) planinotus Tobias, B. (G.) tschitcherini Kokoujev, B. (G.) helleni Telenga, B. (G.) piger Wesmael, B. (G.) variator Nees from the genus Bracon Fabricius (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Braconinae). Morphological descriptions and its general distribution and distribution in Turkey are given. Bracon (G.) planinotus Tobias and B. (G.) helleni Telenga were found to be new records for Turkish fauna.

In this study, we describe 13 Lacerta sicula hieroglyphica collected from the centre of Bursa and Çakırca, a village about 10 km west of Iznik. The specimens, including their habitat characteristics and distribution, are described. This subspecies is known to live on islands in the Marmara Sea and in Istanbul. This is the first report of L. s. hieroglyphica from Bursa and Çakırca village and therefore its distributional range is being extended to the south of the Marmara Sea.

The spatial distributions of Eledone cirrhosa (Lamarck, 1798) and Eledone moschata (Lamarck, 1798) were examined based on four seasonal trawl surverys carried out between 1991-1992 covering 20-500 meters of the Turkish and international waters in the Aegean Sea. It was found that E. cirrhosa inhabits all depth ranges examined in the northern part, but it was seldom observed in the south. E. moschata, on the other hand, has a basin-wide distribution and solely inhabits the upper 200-meter depth range.

Species from the family Apidae (Hymenoptera) in Ankara province were considered. Nine species were determined from the subfamily Bombinae. Synonymies, the plants on which the specimen were caught, the Turkish and global distributions are given along with their distribution maps. Detailed drawings of the ventral view and photographs of the dorsal view of the male genitalia are also given except for the species Megabombus armeniacus(Rad.) , M. pascuorum (Scopoli), and M. humilis (Illiger), which had insufficient male specimens.

(Larinodontes) jaceae Fabricius, L. (Larinodontes) planus Fabricius, L. (Larinomesius) minutus Gyllenhall, from the genus Larinus, L. (Lixoglyptus) circumcinctus Boheman, L. (Lixochelus) cardui Olivier, L. (Lixochelus) elongatus Goeze, from the genus Lixus, which are all belong to subfamily Cleoninae. Distributions and relative abundances of the Eledone cirrhosa and Eledone moschata species exist in Aegean Sea were analized by considering the seasonal data obtained in bottom trawl between 1991 and 1993. According to these result, it was determined that both species have different distribution features in Aegean Sea, both vertically and horizontally. Depending on depth it's evident that E.cirrhosa in various size prefers the stratum in different depth. Whereas E.moschata distributes relatively in the depth of 0-100 m.
