The Breeding Biology Of The Western Tanager (Piranga Ludoviciana), Gary G. Benson
The Breeding Biology Of The Western Tanager (Piranga Ludoviciana), Gary G. Benson
All Master's Theses
In 1969 a two-year study was undertaken in an effort to enlarge our knowledge of the life history of the western tanager (Piranga ludoviciana). Bent (1958) summarizes the literature on the western tanager, and a review of his work clearly shows an almost total absence of detailed information on the species' life history. To obtain this information, observations were conducted from 1 May through 29 July 1969. A few observations were made during the 1968 breeding season.

The Feasibility Of Avian Karyotypes In Taxonomy, Gerald Francis Shields
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to evaluate the usefulness of various karyotypic procedures using domesticated and passerine birds and second, to comment on the validity of the application of karyotypic data to taxonomy.
The Java Sparrow, John L. Long
The Java Sparrow, John L. Long
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE attractive Java Sparrow (Padda oryzivora) with its immaculate grey, white and black plumage is a favourite caged bird both in Australia and abroad.
It represents, however, a species of considerable pest potential to the agricultural interests of this State.
Introduction Of The Red-Browed Finch To Western Australia, John L. Long
Introduction Of The Red-Browed Finch To Western Australia, John L. Long
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE Red-browed Finch (Estrilda temporalis) has been established probably since 1958 in orchard clearings in Darling Range gullies east of Perth.
Although some concern has been shown at the introduction of a new species to Western Australia, it appears to be of little economic importance.
Nesting Ecology Of The Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo Regalis) In West-Central Utah, John Bradford Weston
Nesting Ecology Of The Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo Regalis) In West-Central Utah, John Bradford Weston
Theses and Dissertations
During the spring seasons of 1967 and 1968 ecological studies were made of nesting Ferruginou.s Hawks (Buteo regalis) in a 325 square mile area in west-central Utah. In the springs of 1967 and 1968 a systematic search was conducted throughout the study area for Ferruginous Hawk nests. When active nests were located they were kept under observation throughout the study. The density of nesting pairs in 1967 and 1968 ranged from 7 to 15.4 square miles per pair. An annual seasonal displacement was exhibited, with Ferruginous Hawks being present in the study area only during the nesting season, which lasted …
Nesting Ecology Of The Great Horned Owl Bubo Virginianus In Central Western Utah, Dwight Glenn Smith
Nesting Ecology Of The Great Horned Owl Bubo Virginianus In Central Western Utah, Dwight Glenn Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Information was collected on the nesting ecology of the Great Horned Owl, with particular emphasis placed on aspects of its population and distribution, territoriality and predation. The study was conducted for the two years, 1967 and 1968 in the Thorpe and Topliff hills of central western Utah. Nesting densities on the study area were .36 pairs per square mile in 1967 and .40 pairs per square mile in 1968. Nests averaged one mile apart and were distributed in the periphery of the hills, overlooking the desert valleys. Favorite nest sites were cliff niches, but abandoned quarries and junipers were also …

The Spice Finch, John L. Long
The Spice Finch, John L. Long
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE Spice Finch (Lonchura punctulata) is also known as Nutmeg Finch or Mannikin, Spice bird, Spotted Munia, Common Munia, Ricebird and Scaly-breasted Munia.
It is an east and south east Asian species inhabiting Malaya, Singapore, Penang, India, Ceylon, Burma, Indo-China, Yunnan, Formosa and the Philippines.
The dangers associated with such a species being introduced to Western Australia are great.
The Starling, John L. Long
The Starling, John L. Long
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Despite their pretty colour and their song, starlings cannot be considered beneficial, especially in the fruit and grain-growing areas of W.A. where they are declared vermin.
MILLIONS of starlings inhabit the settled parts of eastern and south-eastern Australia, but so far they have not reached Western Australia.
Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr.
Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr.
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Evaluation of many records is the only way valid judgments can be made on abundance and status. The necessity of obtaining exact dates, localities, numbers, and special weather conditions cannot be overemphasized. For this reason, records in supplement to this list are freely solicited.
The present checklist includes all species and subspecies for which specimens exist. In some instances sight records have been adequate reason for including a species on the list when no specimen existed. Sight records for species which are difficult to identify have been admitted upon careful editing. The author has followed the policy outlined by Griscom …

Birds Of The Brigham Young University Campus, Barid Baran Mukherjee
Theses and Dissertations
This paper deals with the seasonal distribution, relative abundance, and location of the different species of birds which visit or live on the Brigham Young University campus from late summer to early spring, with a brief account of their activities. The upper campus, where this investigation was carried on, covers an area of 201 acres and is situated on a bench at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. The study was continued from July 13, 1955 to April 15, 1956. A total of 173 hours was devoted to census work and to studying the general ecology of the area. Four …

Ecology Of Passerine Birds Wintering At Utah Lake, Joseph R. Murphy
Ecology Of Passerine Birds Wintering At Utah Lake, Joseph R. Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
During the period of October to April of the winter of 1950-51, an ecological study was undertaken of a population or passerine birds wintering in a segment of the Utah Lake Shore. Available winter weather data indicated that although such factors as precipitation, temperature, and wind may often be severe, they are not critical enough to prevent a fairly large population of passerine birds from spending the winter months in the study locale. Five fairly distinct plant communities can be recognized in the area. There is evidence which indicates that certain passerine bird species are especially dependent on a particular …
