The southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus microplus, is a livestock pest worldwide, including South Texas, and can vector Babesia spp.; the causal agents of bovine babesiosis. Its congener, the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is also common worldwide and is frequently parasitized by a wasp, Ixodiphagus hookeri. To better understand the life history and host location cues of parasitic wasps of ticks, which supports the cattle fever tick eradication program for R. microplus, we examined the incidence of R. sanguineus and its parasitoid I. hookeri. Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is a major component in snake venoms and it is found in many different isoforms. To identify transcripts encoding different PLA2 isoforms, we developed a simple, rapid procedure. Total RNA was extracted from the venoms of three cottonmouth snakes and two diamondback rattlesnakes, and further reverse-transcribed into complementary DNA (cDNA). Using one pair of cottonmouth PLA2-specific primers and Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) technique, we identified 27 unique full-length PLA2 transcripts, including nine sequences identical to the previously documented ones in the database and one novel GIII-like PLA2 …

In tropical countries, high ambient temperature (HTa) is a fundamental factor that cause a decline in the mammary gland function in dairy animals. Beta-cardiotoxin (ß-CTX), a novel protein isolated from the King cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) venom has previously been proposed as a beta-blocker candidate. However, cellular mechanisms of ß-CTX on cardiomyocyte is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ß-CTX on isolated rat cardiomyocyte function and the cardiac myofibrillar activity, and to explore involvement of ß-adrenergic receptor (ß-AR) signaling pathway. ß-CTX was isolated and purified using two-step chromatographic method and confirmed by N-terminal sequencer. ผึ้งให้น้ำหวานเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตต้นแบบสําหรับการศึกษาการตอบสนองต่อกลิ่นโดยใช้วิธีการเรียนรู้แบบมี เงื่อนไข (classical conditioning) ผ่านทางพฤติกรรมการแลบลิ้นหรือ Proboscis Extension Response (PER) ซึ่งมีรายงานอย่างกว้างขวางในผึ้งพันธุ์หรือผึ้งให้น้ำหวานสายพันธุ์ยุโรป (A. mellifera) ในขณะที่การศึกษาในผึ้งโพรงหรือผึ้งให้น้ำหวานสายพันธุ์เอเชีย (A. cerana) กลับยังมีการศึกษาอยู่น้อยมาก ทั้งที่มีความสําคัญในการเป็นแมลงผสมเกสรในภูมิภาคเอเชียและในประเทศไทย ในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ วิธีการ PER ถูกนํามาใช้เพื่อเป็นตัวประเมินความสามารถในการเรียนรู้และตอบสนองต่อสาร 2,4–ไดไนโตรโทลูอีน (DNT, สารตั้งต้นวัตถุระเบิด) โดยทําการเปรียบเทียบความสามารถของการเรียนรู้และตอบสนองระหว่างผึ้งทั้งสองชนิด การศึกษานี้ทดลองในช่วงระหว่างเดือนพฤษภาคม 2561 ถึงเดือนมีนาคม 2563 ผึ้งที่มีหน้าที่หาอาหารจะถูกจับและนําไปฝึกให้เกิดการเรียนรู้แบบมีเงื่อนไขระหว่างสารละลายน้ำตาลซูโครสความเข้มข้น 50% w/v (ใช้เป็นรางวัล) และ DNT ความเข้มข้น 25 มิลลิกรัมต่อลิตร (ใช้เป็นสิ่งเร้าเงื่อนไข) การฝึกให้ผึ้งเกิดการเรียนรู้แบบมีเงื่อนไขนั้นจะทําการฝึกผึ้งทั้งหมด 6 ครั้ง ในช่วงเวลา 13:00–15:00 น. เพื่อที่จะสามารถประเมินได้ว่าผึ้งมีความสามารถในการเรียนรู้และจดจํากลิ่น DNT ได้หรือไม่ ผลการศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่า ผึ้งพันธุ์ (N=61) สามารถเกิดการเรียนรู้แบบมีเงื่อนไขระหว่างกลิ่นและน้ำตาลซูโครสได้ โดยมีการแสดงพฤติกรรม PER เพิ่มขึ้นจาก 9.84±3.84% (การฝึกครั้งที่ 1) เป็น 47.54±6.44% (การฝึกครั้งที่ 6) ในขณะที่ผึ้งโพรง (N=36) สามารถเกิดการเรียนรู้แบบมีเงื่อนไขระหว่างกลิ่นและน้ำตาลซูโครสได้เช่นกัน เกิดการแสดงพฤติกรรม PER เพิ่มขึ้นจาก 2.78±2.78% (การฝึกครั้งที่ 1) เป็น 47.22±8.44% (การฝึกครั้งที่ 6) จากผลการศึกษายังระบุอีกว่า ผึ้งพันธุ์มีความสามารถในการเรียนรู้และตอบสนองต่อ DNT (49.18±6.45%) ได้ดีกว่าผึ้งโพรง (16.67±6.30%) ในช่วงที่สองของการฝึก (P<0.01) สําหรับการทดสอบความสามารถในการจดจํา (memory retention test) พบว่า ผึ้งพันธุ์ยังคงสามารถตอบสนองต่อ DNT และแสดงพฤติกรรม PER ได้ 46.00±3.68%, 67.34±4.83% และ 52.03±3.77% ในขณะที่ผึ้งโพรงก็สามารถแสดงพฤติกรรม PER ได้ 55.50±6.10%, 50.50±7.09% และ 44.50±6.37% หลังจากที่เวลาผ่านไป 10 นาที 24 ชั่วโมงและ 48 ชั่วโมงหลังการฝึกตามลําดับ อย่างไรก็ตามความสามารถในการจดจําต่อกลิ่น DNT ของผึ้งทั้งสองชนิดนี้ไม่ได้แตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P>0.05) จากผลการศึกษานี้ ผู้วิจัยพบว่าผึ้งทั้งสองชนิดมีความจําระยะยาว (long-term memory) ที่ยังคงสามารถแสดงพฤติกรรม PER และตอบสนองต่อกลิ่น DNT ได้แม้ว่าเวลาจะผ่านไปแล้ว 48 ชั่วโมงก็ตาม ความสามารถในการเรียนรู้และจดจําที่แตกต่างกันระหว่างผึ้งให้หวานทั้งสองชนิดนี้อาจจะเป็นผลมาจากคัดเลือกทางธรรมชาติเนื่องจากผึ้งทั้งสองชนิดมีถิ่นที่อยู่อาศัยที่มีสภาพภูมิอากาศแตกต่างกัน การศึกษาเพิ่มเติมเพื่อประเมินความสามารถในการเรียนรู้และการจดจําของผึ้งให้น้ําหวานสายพันธุ์เอเชียชนิดอื่น ๆ จะช่วยให้ข้อมูลที่เป็นประโยชน์เพิ่มขึ้นในการศึกษาเชิงเปรียบเทียบระหว่างผึ้งที่อาศัยในเขตอบอุ่นกับในเขตร้อนชื้น

The gut microbiome of domestic horses (Equus ferus caballus) can be broken down into two primary divisions of interest: (1) prokaryotic composition, consisting of bacteria and archaea and (2) fungal composition. Within the gut, there are also eukaryotic parasite communities that may interact with the microbiome. Estuaries are commonly touted as nurseries for out-migrating salmonids, providing higher prey availability than streams, a physiological transition zone, and refugee from marine predators. Yet the diversity of estuaries makes it difficult to generalize the effect they have on salmonid recruitment. In bar-built estuaries, sandbars form at the mouth of rivers during periods of low flow, closing access to the ocean and disrupting outmigration. Some studies suggest that Coho Salmon populations are limited by overwinter survival as a result of insufficient winter habitat. While many small-scale projects aim to define reach and basin-level habitat requirements for Coho Salmon, large-scale studies that assess multiple independent populations remain few. For my research, I quantified large woody debris (LWD) by volume and low-velocity rearing habitat (LVH) as percent area in three coastal watersheds of similar size in northern California to untangle the relationships between Coho Salmon overwinter survival, emigration timing and specific winter habitats. Predation by wild carnivores challenges livestock producers worldwide. To reduce or offset losses due to predation, a variety of predator control methods and compensation schemes have been developed. In 2001, Marin County, California, USA replaced its U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services (WS) cooperative predator damage management program with a county-run program that emphasized nonlethal methods for preventing and controlling coyote (Canis latrans) predation on domestic sheep (Ovis aries). The southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) is an important kleptoparasite of cavities excavated by the imperiled red-cockaded woodpecker (Dryobates borealis). Flying squirrel usurpation of cavities may affect woodpecker productivity, but current efforts to manage flying squirrels are costly and time consuming. We assessed whether capsaicin could deter flying squirrel use of woodpecker cavities on a site in southwest Georgia, USA. Twenty-nine cavity tree clusters received 4 treatments: capsaicin, water, air, and a control (no treatment). Effective management of rodent pests requires an ecological understanding of how they move through their environment and how those movements influence the invasion, persistence, or reinvasion of problematic colonies. Traditional methodologies used to describe rodent movement patterns, such as mark-recapture, are hindered by their time-consuming nature and limited geographic scope. Agricultural crops can sustain extensive damage caused by Canada geese (Branta canadensis) when these crops are planted near wetlands or brood-rearing sites. From 2000 to 2015, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks spent >$5.6 million to manage damages caused by Canada geese to agricultural crops (primarily soybeans) in South Dakota, USA. In this study, we examined the use of an unmanned aerial system (UAS) to monitor fish-eating birds on catfish (Ictalurus spp.) aquaculture facilities in Mississippi, USA. We tested 2 automated computer algorithms to identify bird species using mosaicked imagery taken from a UAS platform. One algorithm identified birds based on color alone (color segmentation), and the other algorithm used shape recognition (template matching), and the results of each algorithm were compared directly to manual counts of the same imagery. Aircraft bird strikes are increasing globally. Bird strikes constitute a major human health and safety risk and result in millions of dollars in economic impacts.
