Spea is a genus of toad-like, arid adapted frogs distributed throughout much of the western U.S. and northern Mexico. Two species, (S. Bombifrons and S. Multiplicata) are syntopic throughout most of the northern Chihuahuan Desert, a region that is experiencing rapid urbanization. For this study, I examined 936 male advertisement calls from urban and rural populations of S. multiplicata, and a rural population of S. bombifrons in west Texas and south-central New Mexico. Pig breeding is usually undertaken for fat and meat production, but different sectors (cosmetics industry, pharmaceutical industry, medical sector, etc.) can also use pigs for alternate purposes. Pork is evaluated based on the status of an amended law regarding butchers' meat in Turkey. There have been 25 pig farms registered in Turkey since 7 July 2006 in the framework of compliance with the European Union. On average, a sow has 2.3 farrowings per year, producing 9.5 to 12.5 piglets per litter. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of 2 different transport temperatures on the in vitro maturation of oocytes collected from frozen-thawed sheep ovaries. Sheep ovaries were transferred into saline at temperatures of 4 °C and 32 °C. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of serum selenium in coarse-haired Pomeranian sheep and to evaluate the effect of the oral supplementation of selenized yeast on selected performance parameters in such sheep. A serological investigation of equine infectious anaemia (EIA), equine viral arteritis (EAV), glanders, and dourine was conducted on the sera of 346 Turkish horses using a combination of tests in series (ELISA and agar gel immunodiffusion) for EIA, virus neutralisation for EAV, and complement fixation (CF) for glanders and dourine. Forty-nine sera showed anticomplementary reactions and were not assessable in the CF test for glanders and dourine. No positive samples were detected for EIA, dourine, and glanders. Salmonella infection is one of the most important diseases that affect all animal species and is the leading cause of foodborne infections worldwide. One of the challenges in the control and prevention of salmonellosis is the recognition of potential carriers. To assess the potential role of shepherd dogs in the epidemiology of salmonellosis, fecal samples were taken from 38 shepherd dogs in Garmsar Province. The case consisted of a 1-month-old female llama with a left distal diaphyseal forearm fracture caused by trauma. Clinical and radiographic examination confirmed the presence of a distal fracture of the left radius and ulna. Treatment was carried out by combining internal and external fixation techniques. Successful fracture healing was achieved without any complications using this method of treatment, which has not been reported before.

The palatine tonsils of 220 pigs were examined for the occurrence of Streptococcus suis and other Streptococcus species. Samples were cultured onto Colombia agar plates with 5% defibrinated horse blood and selective antibiotic supplement and were incubated at 37 °C for 24-48 h aerobically. Presumptive colonies were identified using API20 Strep (bioMérieux). S. suis was not detected in any of the 220 palatine tonsils examined. S. porcinus was the most common streptococcus recovered and was isolated from 68 (31%) pigs. The case of a patellar fracture in a 2-year-old male Chow Chow dog was reported. Clinical examination showed a few superficial wounds, erythema, a slight edema on the lateral aspect of the knee joint, and mild to moderate limping in the right hind leg. The patella was palpated more proximally than expected, while an acute ridge was felt at its distal pole. X-ray examination indicated that it had been fractured into 3 fragments. A 10-year-old mongrel dog was presented with signs of vomiting, prostration, anorexia, abdominal pain, dyspnea, dysuria, and enhanced scrotal volume. Clinical, laboratory, and radiological examinations showed intrascrotal testicular pathology and chronic renal failure. Emergency treatment was carried out; however, the patient died. Necropsy diagnosed an intrascrotal testicular torsion and seminoma. The aim of the present report is to describe an intrascrotal testicular torsion associated with chronic renal failure in a dog.

During the period from December 2008 to September 2009, we examined 254 serum samples (164 in hot-dry weather and 90 in cold-dry weather) from dromedary camels distributed all over Yazd Province, in the center of Iran. IgG antibodies were assayed by the modified agglutination test (MAT) and Neospora agglutination test (NAT) using whole tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum, incorporating 2-mercaptoethanol, for T. gondii and N. caninum, respectively. The efficacy of blood and buffy coat smear examination, commercially available dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, and nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was evaluated in the diagnosis of canine ehrlichiosis in 40 dogs exhibiting symptoms suggestive of the disease. The intracytoplasmic rickettsial organisms were seen in the smears of only 1 dog (2.5%) with an extremely low level of parasitemia. Nested PCR with 16S rRNA revealed characteristic 378 bp bands indicating positive reaction in 8 (20.0%) dogs and sera samples of 21 (52.5%) dogs revealed anti-Ehrlichia antibodies. A large number of birds in 3 pigeon flocks (containing 637 individuals) were severely affected by Hadjelia truncata. This was observed in April 2011 in Sistan District in Iran. In the affected birds, progressive weight loss, weakness, and death were observed. In the necropsy of 8 cases the gizzards were larger and softer than normal and in all of them distortion was detected. Stool examination by the Clayton Lane method revealed 72% infection among domestic pigeons. Amphibian species worldwide are threatened with decline and extinction, making species monitoring an important scientific endeavor. The Bloody Bay Poison Frog, Mannophryne olmonae, a Tobago island endemic, was identified as critically endangered by the IUCN in 2004. Recent evidence suggests that a less severe conservation status may be appropriate for M. olmonae. This study employs acoustic calling surveys, land-use information, and multi-year (2011 and 2012) occupancy modeling techniques to propose an appropriate conservation status for this species. This study suggests that M. olmonae occupies a larger geographic range than was previously thought, and is not experiencing population declines. …

Zooplankton composition and abundance were investigated seasonally at 6 sites in Lake Karaboğaz in relation to some physicochemical conditions. A total of 63 taxa were identified, among them 51 species of rotifers, 8 cladocerans, and 4 copepods. Rotifera represented the predominant component (79% of the total community), followed by nauplii, cladocerans, and copepods (15%, 5%, and 1%, respectively). The average total zooplankton abundance ranged from 9603 to 22,968 ind/m^3. The maximum and the minimum densities were measured in June and August of 2009, respectively. This study is based upon material of the family Dermestidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 1965 and 2012. The study resulted in the recording for the Turkish fauna of 28 species of 6 genera belonging to 3 subfamilies (Attageninae, Dermestinae, Megatominae) within the family Dermestidae. Among them, Attagenus unicolor unicolor (Brahm, 1791), Anthrenus scrophulariae scrophulariae (Linnaeus, 1758), and Anthrenus goliath Saulcy in Mulsant & Rey, 1868 have been found to be the most abundant and widespread species. A 2-year study of the food habits of the Persian leopard was conducted in Sarigol National Park in northeastern Iran, North Khorasan Province. Based on an analysis of 52 leopard scats, the principal prey was wild sheep (Ovis orientalis: prey frequency of occurrence = 61.5%; prey relative frequency of occurrence = 47.05%; relative biomass = 53.96%), followed by wild pig (Sus scrofa: frequency = 23.07%; relative frequency = 17.64%; relative biomass = 25.38%) and wild goat (Capra aegagrus: frequency = 13.46%; relative frequency = 10.29%; relative biomass = 6.64%). In this paper we summarize the knowledge on earthworm diversity in the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina Mountains) based on new findings and published data in order to establish the first list of known earthworm taxa from the entire area of the Balkan Mountains. During investigations in the western part of the Balkan Mountains (western Stara Planina Mountains), 24 earthworm species were recorded altogether. In this paper, the authors report the discovery of Sphedanolestes sanguineus (Fabricius, 1794) in Turkey, a new finding for Asian fauna, and give an annotated checklist of Reduviidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) for this country. Stenolemus novaki Horváth, 1888, Holotrichius apterus Jakovlev, 1879, Holotrichius denudatus A. Costa, 1842, Holotrichius rotundatus Stål, 1874, Rhynocoris annulatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Rhynocoris transitus Hoberlandt, 1952, and Pygolampis bidentata (Goeze, 1778) are little known species from Turkey. Typhlops vermicularis (Merrem, 1820) is one of the cosmopolitan species of the genus Typhlops that occupies a vast range of different localities from North Africa to western Afghanistan. In this study, different populations of T. vermicularis were investigated to clarify if there was any degree of geographic variation in this taxon throughout the studied range. For this purpose, 103 specimens of this taxon belonging to 12 populations from all over Iran, Turkey, and Turkmenistan were studied. Despite the ecological importance and globally threatened status of freshwater bivalves, the freshwater mussel fauna of Turkey has hitherto received little attention. The aim of this study was to describe the ecology of freshwater mussels of the Lake Sapanca basin (northwest Turkey) to provide baseline data against which to measure future trends. A total of 625 fish belonging to 25 species were sampled from the coasts of Trabzon, Rize, and Artvin provinces and examined parasitologically. Cytogenetic characteristics of Devario aequipinnatus (McClelland, 1839) and Devario yuensis (Arunkumar and Tombi, 1998) from northeast India were studied by examining metaphase chromosome spreads from gill, epithelial, and kidney cells. The diploid chromosome numbers of both species were 2n = 50. This work attempted to evaluate the rotifer species diversity indices of Camp Balloki Water Park and infer the state of the water according to rotifers and physicochemical parameters. The diversity indices, species richness, and evenness were assessed every month. The Shannon–Weaver index indicated that this habitat had great diversity of rotifers throughout the year. These results were supported by the Simpson dominance, diversity, and reciprocal indices. Water and plankton samples were taken monthly from January 2006 to December 2006.
