The Abrolhos coral reefs are the southernmost living reefs in the Indian Ocean. They have a unique assemblage of tropical species of fish, reef corals and other invertebrates, which live in close association with temperate species, particularly of algae, and species endemic to Western Australia. The Abrolhos is the centre of the fishery for the commercially valuable western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus). Terrestrial flora and fauna of the Abrolhos are relict and provide important reference areas on ecological interactions. Phase-feeding (PF) in broiler chickens has been researched as a way to reduce feed costs without reducing growth performance and yield. Predicted amino acid requirements for PF are generated using linear regression equations derived from best estimates of lysine (Lys), sulfur amino acid (SAA), and threonine (Thr) requirements. During the late starter and early grower periods, predicted requirements for the SAA methionine (Met) and cysteine (Cys) are higher than levels recommended by the National Research Council (NRC), and previous research suggests that SAA may be lowered during the grower period without sacrificing growth performance or yield. Vasotocin receptors are members of seven transmembrane spanning G-protein associated receptors. Several isoforms have been recognized in mammals and birds. It has been shown that VT-1 expression occurs primarily in the brain while VT-2 expression occurs mainly in the pituitary. There is no current evidence to support that both VTR-1 and -2 are found in a single tissue. Total litter weight weaned at 120 d postpartum per ewe lambing is often believed to be a measure of range ewe productivity. Genetic correlations for litter weight weaned at 120 d with prolificacy, growth, and wool traits for Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, and Targhee sheep were estimated using REML with animal models. Observations per breed ranged from 5,140 to 7,083 for litter weight weaned, from 5,140 to 7,095 for prolificacy traits, from 7,750 to 9,530 for growth traits, and from 4,603 to 18,443 for wool traits. Heritability estimates for litter weight weaned were low and ranged from 0.02 to 0.11. Fraction …

The heritability of diet selection for mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. vaseyana [Rydb] Beetle) by grazing sheep was estimated from fecal samples collected from 549 Rambouillet ewes. Fecal samples were collected in September and October during 1996 and 1997 from free-grazing ewes on intermountain sagebrush-bunchgrass rangelands at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Idaho. The total number of fecal samples was 1,949. Fecal samples were evaluated for composition of big sagebrush by near-infrared spectroscopy. Intestinal coccidiosis, caused by various species of Eimeria, is an economically important disease of chickens and turkeys. The peripheral blood leukocyte response and macrophage functions during a coccidial infection in turkeys have not been defined. To examine these aspects of innate immunity during primary Eimeria infection in turkeys, 4-week-old poults were orally inoculated with either 50,000 E. adenoeides oocyst (24 infected poults) or water (24 control poults). Ergotamine is an ergot alkaloid associated with fescue toxicosis of livestock who have grazed endophyte-infected fescue. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to detect individual or species-specific differences in the metabolism of ergotamine by liver cytochrome P450 of sheep and cattle. Livers were collected from four steers and two sheep. The diet of the steers used in this study consisted of two being fed a grain diet, one steer grazing endophyte-infected fescue, and the final steer grazing endophyte-free fescue. This study was performed on 3 species of the genus Assyriella ( A. escheriana , A. guttata and A. thospitis) collected from Diyarbakır province in Southeast Anatolia. Two derived and 6 shell variables of 50 specimens were examined for each species. Hierarchical clustering and discriminant analysis were used to evaluate the data in order to clarify and contribute to some systematic problems of these species. It was shown that Ward's method with Euclidean distance is the most appropriate hierarchical clustering method to cluster these species. A. escheriana is clearly differentiated from A. guttata and A. thospitis by both Ward's method …

In the present study, a total of 115 (65 , 50 ) specimens of mountain frogs from the mid-Taurus Range between east longitudes 33^o and 36^o were investigated from the morphological and serological points of view. From the data obtained, no differences were found at species level among the 3 populations from the region.

A Study Of The Ecofaunal Complexes Of The Leaf-Eating Beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) In Azerbaijan, Nailya Mirzoeva

A total of 377 leaf-eating beetle species from 69 genera and 11 subfamilies (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) were revealed in Azerbaijan, some of which are important pests of agriculture and forestry. The leaf-eating beetle distribution among different areas of Azerbaijan is presented. In the Great Caucasus 263 species are noted, in the Small Caucasus 206, in Kura - Araks lowland 174, and in Lenkoran zone 262. The distribution of the leaf-eating beetles among different sites is also described and the results of zoogeographic analysis of the leaf-eating beetle fauna are presented as well. Marsh Frogs, Rana Ridibunda In Lake Akören -26 August National Park (Afyon): A Preliminary Study Of Population Size And A Taxonomical Evaluation, Uğur Kaya, Uğur C. Eri̇şmi̇ş

The population size of marsh frogs, Rana ridibunda was estimated using the mark-recapture method in Lake Akören Lake. The triple catch method was used to calculate survival and gains in addition to population size. The population sizes were estimated to be 3016 on the second day, and 3532 on the third day. On the basis of morphological analyses, we concluded that Lake Akören is inhabited by Rana ridibunda ridibunda.

The Carnivores Of The Northeastern Badia, Jordan, Fayez Bunaian, Alia Hatough, Derar Ababaneh, Sultan Mashaqbeh, Mohamed Yuosef, Zuhair Sami Amr

The presence of 8 carnivores representing 3 families (Canidae, Felidae and Hyaenidae) in the northeastern Badia was con-firmed by trapping and spotlighting. The family Canidae is represented by 4 species: Canis aureus syriaca, Canis lupus arabs, Vulpes vulpes and Vulpes rueppelli. Three felines, Caracal caracal schmitzi, Felis margarita and Felis sylvestris tristrami, were spotlighted. Remains of recently killed Hyaena hyaena syriacawere recovered. Major threats affecting the population of desert carnivores such as poisoning and shooting are discussed in detail. Current local, IUCN and CITES statues of the carnivores of the Badia area are given.

Turridae Swainson, 1840 Species (Gastropoda-Mollusca) Of İzmir Bay (Aegean Sea), Bi̇lal Öztürk

This study aims to determine the species belonging to the family Turridae in İzmir Bay, based on specimens collected from 11 stations between 1995 and 1998. As a result of examinations, 15 species are determined in the region. Among these, Mangelia paciniana (Calcara, 1839), Raphitoma echinata (Brocchi, 1814) and Philbertia horrida Monterosato, 1884 are Mediterranean endemic species, and are new records for the Turkish coasts. Other species listed in this study are distributed both in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

A Preliminary Study On The Ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Of Edirne In North-Western Turkey, Selçuk Yurtsever

Preliminary investigations were carried out to determine the ladybird species of Turkish Trakya. Population samples for the study were obtained from several sites in different habitats near Edirne province. A total of twelve different ladybird species were determined. Of these, the 7-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, was the commonest species. The density of the 22-spot ladybird, Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata, was higher than that of the other ladybirds in almost all habitats surveyed. Frequencies of the black and yellow forms of the 14-spot ladybird, Propylea quatuordecimpunctata, in the area showed a tendency to be associated with open and shaded habitats respectively. The Habitat, external and cranial morphologies, and karyotype of Turkish specimens of Tatera indica are described for the first time with this study. It was determined that Tatera indica was located in uncultivated arid and semi-arid habitat in southeastern Turkey. Its external and cranial characteristics are consistent with those detailed in published papers. The karyotype of Tatera indica is composed of 2n = 68, NF = 84 and NFa = 80.

In this study, a list of Helophorus species known in Turkey is presented with their distribution in Turkey and the rest of the world. Of these, Helophorus (Atracthelophorus) arvernicus Mulsant, 1846 and Helophorus (Rhopalhelophorus) kirgisicus Knisch, 1914 are recorded in Turkey for the first time and are reviewed according to our specimens. H. (Transithelophorus) ter- minassianae Angus, 1984, Helophorus (Empleurus) nubilus Fabricius, 1776, H. (Eutrichelophorus) micans Faldermann, 1835, H. (A.) abeillei Guillebeau, 1896 and H. (Rhopalhelophorus) lapponicus Thomson, 1854 have been collected in Erzurum for the first time.

Very few genera of vertebrates demonstrate variation in body size, color, pattern, and life history traits to the extreme that is demonstrated in the genus Desmognathus. Exact distribution of Desmognathus, as well as other genera of salamanders, is very difficult to outline because of hybridization between certain desmognathine species. Tooth morphology, tail keeling, head and body shape, and geographic location are factors used in the separation among species in this genus. The Black Mountain salamander, Desmognathus welteri, is a relatively large brownish-green salamander that possesses morphological characters associated with a semi-aquatic lifestyle. The history of this species in the state of West Virginia is an interesting one. Due to taxonomic confusion and the lack of a thorough investigation of the species in the state, little was known about the species until recently. Surveys for Desmognathus welteri in southern West Virginia revealed five new populations. This makes 17 localities for the species in the state.
