The objective of this study was to examine the influence of 17β-estradiol (E2) on distribution of LH and FSH isoforms during the follicular phase of the bovine estrous cycle prior to the preovulatory surges of LH and FSH. On Day 16 of the estrous cycle (Day 0 = estrus), intact controls (CONT; n = 4) were treated with prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) to induce luteal regression and initiation of the follicular phase. Other cows were also treated with PGF2α and either ovariectomized (OVX; n = 5) or ovariectomized and given E2 implants (OVXE; n …

Pb1533-Nipple Watering Systems For Broilers, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service
Animals/Livestock
Nipple watering systems for broilers have become very popular in recent years. This is mainly because these systems save labor by eliminating the chore of cleaning waterers. Although labor is greatly reduced with nipple watering systems, this does not mean that they require less management. In fact, nipple waterers demand more time, knowledge and effort to operate properly than do open systems. Problems caused by insufficient or improper management of nipple watering systems can have a serious impact on broiler performance.

Northern Waterthrush. At 9:35 a.m. on December 14, and again at 10:15 a.m. on December 21, 1994, I observed what I believe was the same bird on a Burlington Northern railroad embankment north of Gifford Road in Fontenelle Forest, Bellevue, NE. On December 14, I saw it for 7 seconds. It vocalized with a sharp "chink" as it hopped up on a fallen log, then vocalized again 6-7 seconds later as it jumped down into thick underbrush. It was silent on December 21, but I observed it for at least ten minutes as it walked at the foot of a …

Nebraska Bird Review
The first arrival at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in southern Texas was on October 5, 1994, and the last arrivals (a family group) were on January 12, 1995, the latest date that an adult pair had ever arrived at Aransas. A total of 132 (125 adult/subadult and 7 young) Whooping Cranes are wintering at Aransas, including 3 birds that spent the summer at Aransas. A solitary chick sighted with Sandhill Cranes in Oklahoma on January 2, 1995 is the 133rd crane in the flock. Since, under optimum conditions, 148 cranes were expected to reach Aransas during the fall migration, the …

Fall Field Report, August-November 1994, W. Ross Silcock, Richard C. Rosche
Nebraska Bird Review
The fall season is a long one in terms of bird movements. The SUMMER FIELD REPORT detailed the post-breeding wanderings of herons and the beginning of shorebird migration. This report covers the end of these and the southward movements of insectivorous passerines, mainly in August and September, while seedeaters such as sparrows follow, mainly in September and October. Waterfowl generally bring up the rear, moving south just ahead of the freeze-up.
The fall season is probably the most exciting time for rare bird enthusiasts, as young birds of many species wander, often aimlessly, at this time of year before they …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Many of us enjoy walking in the woods or prairie and looking for interesting natural items or behavior. My oldest child now takes delight in spotting and finding things before I do. Often we find skulls, teeth, and bones of mammals and, I suspect, many other people do too given the fact that many of these items are brought into the Museum to be identified. With just a little explanation about what mammals eat and the effect of these foods on the shapes of teeth, an observant person can start to categorize several common mammals if they know what to …

Fishery Independent Standing Stock Surveys Of Oyster Populations In The Virginia Sub Estuaries Of The Chesapeake Bay And A Comparison With Continuing Estimates Obtained From Fishery Dependent Data, Roger L. Mann, James Wesson
Reports
Extensive description of the Virginia oyster resource and history of its utilization has been given by Haven, Hargis and Kendall (1981), and more recently reviewed by Hargis and Haven (1988). These contributions, among many others, describe a state of continuing decline. To facilitate resource management a fishery independent survey was proposed to and subsequently supported by the Chesapeake Bay Stock Assessment Committee in 1993. This report covers activity on that program for the period October of 1993 through September of 1994.

The Warnbro Sound Crab Fishery Draft Management Plan., Fiona Crowe
Fisheries management papers
In recent years fishing effort for the blue summer/manna crabs (Portunus pelagicus) in Warnbro Sound has increased dramatically and concerns have been raised about the state of stocks of crabs in Warnbro Sound. As a result of the increased pressure being put on the limited resource, the relationship between professional and recreational user groups has become sensitive. It is therefore appropriate that measures ensure the responsible management of the Warnbro Sound Crab Fishery be introduced. Gear, bag limit and size restrictions on the taking of blue swimmer crabs by recreational fishermen already exists as part of the the overall recreational …

Using Biodiversity Data To Assess Species--Habitat Relationships In Glacier National Park, Montana, Diane M. Debinski, Peter F. Brussard
Diane M. Debinski
Biodiversity surveys are becoming increasingly popular. However, standard analysis techniques for these data have not yet been developed. This paper explores the use of multivariate ordination techniques for assessing species—habitat relationships using biodiversity data. The research was conducted in Glacier National Park, Montana, and birds and butterflies were chosen as the taxonomic groups of study. Biodiversity assessment sites were established throughout a range of habitats and monitored from 1987 through 1989. Presence/absence sampling over the total number of sampling sites was used to classify species commonness and rarity. Approximately 86% of the historically recorded butterflies and 70% of the historically …

Bluetongue is an International Office of Epizootics List A disease described as the century's most economically devastating affliction of sheep. Bluetongue (BLU) viruses were thought to infect only ruminants, shrews, and some rodents, but recently, inadvertent administration of BLU virus-contaminated vaccine resulted in mortality and abortion among domestic dogs. We present evidence of natural BLU virus infection among African carnivores that dramatically widens the spectrum of susceptible hosts. We hypothesize that such infection occurred after ingestion of meat and organs from BLU virus infected prey species. The effect of BLU virus on endangered carnivores such as the cheetah and African …

Perkinsus-Marinus (Apicomplexa) As A Potential Source Of Oyster Crassostrea-Virginica Mortality In Coastal Lagoons Of Tabasco, Mexico, Em Burreson, Rs Alvarez, W Martinez, La Macedo
VIMS Articles
Poorly documented, but apparently sporadic oyster Crassostrea virginica mortality in the coastal lagoons Carmen, Machona and Mecoacan at the southern extreme of the Gulf of Mexico in Tabasco, Mexico, has been attributed by local oystermen to pollution resulting from oil refinery operations. In September 1992 we sampled oysters in these lagoons to investigate the potential for disease-induced mortality from the oyster pathogen Perkinsus marinus. Prevalence of P. marinus was 100% at Lodazal, a high salinity (31 ppt) site in Carmen lagoon and 60% at Rio San Felipe, a low salinity (15 ppt) site. At Los Jimenez, a high salinity (32 …

Selection for predicted weight of testes at 150 d of age (PWT) was practiced for 10 generations to determine the effect on reproductive and growth traits in swine. Mass selection among boars (line TS) or random selection (line C) was practiced beginning with the F3 generation of a Large White x Landrace composite population. Population size in each line was 40 to 45 litters by 15 sires per generation. Responses were estimated by regressions on cumulative selection differentials for PWT and on generation number and by mixed-model derivative-free REML procedures. The realized heritability of PWT was .35 ± .02 and …

Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Commitee Chairman's Report, October 1994 - The Western Rock Lobster Fishery - Management Proposals For The 1994/95 And 1995/96 Seasons, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee, Peter Rogers
Fisheries management papers
The failures of past restrictions on fishing effort to fully halt the decline of the breeding stock led to the formation of a sub-committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee. The prime objective of the sub-committee is to evaluate effective long term strategies for managing the fishery so that breeding stock is maintained at an adequate level despite the inevitable increases in catching efficiency. The purpose of this report is firstly to advise industry of the management proposals for the 1994/95 seasons and secondly to form a basis for industry consultation on management arrangements for the 1995/96 season.

Long Term Management Strategies For The Western Rock Lobster Fishery (4 Volumes) - Law Enforcement Considerations (Volume 4), Neil Mclaughlan
Fisheries management papers
This report has been prepared for the consideration of the RLIAC Sub Committee in consultation with members of the Sub Committee working group on law enforcement and with senior staff of the Operations Division of the Fisheries Department. It is focussed exclusively on law enforcement issues associated with the management options for the West Australian west coast rock lobster fishery which were under consideration by the Sub Committee at the time of report preparation and should be read in conjunction with Fisheries Management Paper No. 67 entitled "Evaluation of management options" which covers the broader industry management issues. This report …
Long Term Management Strategies For The Western Rock Lobster Industry (4 Volumes) - Economic Efficiency Of Alternative Input And Output Based Management Systems In The Western Rock Lobster Fishery (Volume 2), Bob Lindner
Fisheries management papers
Since 1965, the Western Rock Lobster Fishery has been managed by what is essentially a license limitation scheme invoiving restricted entry for boats, and strict controls on the aggregate number of pots which can be used by the commercial fishing sector. By most measures, management of this fishery has been highly successful. Biological over-exploitation of the fish stock has been prevented, at least until recently. Notwithstanding these achievements, there is widespread concern that the future profitability, and even the viability of the industry is under threat unless the current management practices are reformed. Because of the complexity and intrinsic uncertainty …
Long Term Management Strategies For The Western Rock Lobster Fishery (4 Volumes) - A Market-Based Economic Assessment For The Western Rock Lobster Industry (May 1994) (Volume 3), Marec Pty Ltd
Fisheries management papers
In October 1992 a special Sub-Committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee was set up to consider and evaluate future management strategies for the rock lobster fishery. Pursuant to this the Director of Fisheries commissioned a marketing study that is the basis of this report. This study was commenced in early October 1993 and completed in May 1994. This study looked at the market implications of fishery's management strategies. In particular it assesses how the existing management structure limits the potential for the lobster industry to maximise the financial return, and in doing so provides an insight into the …
