Use Of Otolith Length And Weight In Age Determination Of Poor Cod (Trisopterus Minutus Linn., 1758), Gülnur Meti̇n, Akin Türker İlkyaz
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Totally 189 poor cod (Trisopterus minutus Linn., 1758) specimens were collected by trawling in the central Aegean Sea between April 2001 and March 2002. The relationship of the otolith length and weight with the age of poor cod was investigated, as the age determination is relatively difficult by otolith readings. There was a linear relationship between the fish length (LT) and the otolith length (L_{o}), i.e. L_{o} = 0.421 LT + 1.659 (R^{2} = 0.998), a linear relationship between the fish age (T) and the otolith weight (W_{o}), i.e. W_{o} = 0.041 T - 0.030 (R^{2} = 0.994), and a …

Characterization Of Branchial Na,K-Atpase From Three Freshwater Fish Species (Oreochromis Niloticus, Cyprinus Carpio, And Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Gülüzar Atli, Mustafa Canli
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Branchial Na,K-ATPase activity was characterized in 3 freshwater fish species (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Oreochromis niloticus, and Cyprinus carpio) with different ecological needs. Na^{+}, K^{+}, and Cl^{-} concentrations in the gills were also measured. The maximal Na,K-ATPase activity was observed at 100 mM Na^{+}, 20-40 mM K^{+}, 3-4 mM Mg^{2+}, and 1 mM ouabain. The maximal velocity (Vmax) of Na,K-ATPase isolated from O. mykiss (1.07 µmol Pi/mg prot/h) was lower than that isolated from O. niloticus (7.25 µmol Pi/mg prot/h) and C. carpio (7.44 µmol Pi/mg prot/h). Nevertheless, Na^{+}, K^{+}, and Cl^{-} levels in O. mykiss were higher than the others. The …

Efficacy Of The Rodenticide Bromethalin In The Control Of Microtus Arvalis And Nesokia Indica In Alfalfa Fields, Alireza Khalilaria, Mohsen Morovati, Mehdi Naseri
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Rodents cause huge losses to agricultural crops annually. During outbreaks, this pest can cause irreversibly high damage. Solely non-chemical control measures have not been successful in reducing the population of this pest; therefore, the use of chemical rodenticides, especially on crops like alfalfa, is unavoidable. Bromethalin is a neurotoxic, acute, single-dose rodenticide with high efficacy, and since it is mostly used in wax formulation it is not attractive to non-target organisms, and hence is not very dangerous. Bromethalin 0.01% was tested in alfalfa fields of west Azerbaijan, Tehran, and Kerman provinces in completely randomised treatment blocks with 4 treatments (bromethalin …
