Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of the present study was to define the reference values for erythrocyte and liver tissue glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and also reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in order to obtain basal data for subsequent toxicological investigations. In addition, the best storage conditions were determined for liver G6PDH enzyme. Male, apparently healthy Mus musculus (38) speciemens that had normal livers (histopathological data) were included in the study. G6PDH and GPX activities and GSH levels were measured by the Beutler method, and SOD aktivity was measured by the Fridovich method in …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In the present study, 268 records for each character (birth weight, weaning weight and live weight at 6 months of age) obtained from crossbred goats (75 percent German Fawn Goat, 25 percent Hair Goat), which were reared at the Dairy Goat Unit at Çukurova University between 1992 and 1994, were used to estimate heritabilities, genetic and phenotypic correlations and breeding values with Derivative Free Restricted Maximum Likelihood (DFREML). In the analysis, year of birth, type of birth, sex of kid and age of dam were assumed as fixed effects, and individual animal as a random effect under the animal model. …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, amplification of the rinderpest virus (RPV) fusion (F) gene with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloning of the F gene in Escherichia coli were reported. For this purpose, first total mRNA from Vero cells infected with vaccine strain of RPV was obtained and then cDNA from this mRNA preparation was acquired with reverse transcription. In PCR, cDNA from infected Vero cells and F gene specific primers were used and the F gene was amplified. Both the PCR product and the cloning vector pUC19 were cut with EcoRI and HindIII restriction enzymes. By using T4 DNA ligase, insert …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to investigate the size distribution of steroidogenic and non-steroidogenic luteal cells throughout the oestrus cycle. Twelve corpora lutea collected from different stages of the oestrus cycle were used. Corpora lutea collected from nonpregnant cows were dissociated into single-cell suspensions by enzyme treatments. Cells were stained for 3\beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3\beta-HSD) activity, a marker for steroidogenic cells. The sizes of 3b-HSD positive (steroidogenic) and negative cells (nonsteroidogenic) were measured with an ocular micrometer. Very small cells (

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was conducted to evaluate the pharmacologic effects of Polygonum lapathifolium L. (Polygonaceae), growing naturally in Turkey. The antiinflammatory activity of the ethanol extract of the root and rhizome of P. lapathifolium was evaluated using carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats. Intraperitoneal pretreatment with extract at doses ranging from 100 to 500 mg/kg significantly inhibited the acute phase of this experimental model of the inflammatory process in a dose-dependent manner. At maximal dose (500 mg/kg), it exhibited a significantly higher action when compared with those of other doses and was found to be 1.08 times as active as indomethacin. The …

A 4 x 4 x 4 factorial arrangement was used. The main factors were feed source, length of fermentation, and level of added Propionibacterium. Fermentations were conducted in batch cultures with Propionibacterium added to the flasks just prior to the addition of rumen inoculum. The total VFA, acetate, and propionate concentrations increased 9, 5, and 18%, respectively with the addition of Propionibacterium. Propionibacterium decreased dry-matter digestibility by 2% and fiber digestibility by 14%. A second study was conducted …
Multiple-Trait Analysis Using Bayesian Methods In Animal Breeding: A Gibbs Sampling Approach, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat
Multiple-Trait Analysis Using Bayesian Methods In Animal Breeding: A Gibbs Sampling Approach, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Most animal breeding experiments are based on more than one economically important trait measured in each individual. In the statistical analysis of the resulting data, traits recorded in the same individuals are often considered one at a time. Usually we are interested, however, not only in the mode of inheritance of a particular trait but also in its relationships with other traits. Multivariate analyses are required to make inferences about genetic and phenotypic correlations between traits, but point estimates of such parameters can be poor even when breeding data on hundreds of animals are used. Bayesian methods exclude variance matrices …

In the histological examination of tissue sections, strong positive reactions against H. somnus were detected in 14% of the lungs. H. somnus antigens were observed at the surface and/or within the epithelial cells, macrophages, necrotic alveolar walls, alveolar -bronchial/br onchiolar exudates, fibrins, distended interlobular septa and perivascular areas. In addition, dense antigen accumulations were detected in the necrotic macrophages and neutrophils.
