Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, mitral valves, left ventricle volume and myocardial contractibility indices in English racing (n:30) and show-jumping horses (n:30) were investigated using M-mode echocardiography. The percentages of fractional shortening (% EF), ejection fraction (% EF), and the mean velocity of circumferential shortening (Vcf) were determined on each of three transducer positions. Mitral valve amplitude and slope measurements on transducer III position and left ventricle volume measurements on transducer I, II and III positions were taken and the average of all measurements were calculated. A significant difference between the amplitude of CE and DE of the mitral valvle in racing …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Two experiments were carried out in order to determine the effect of corn-soybean meal or wheat-soybean meal based diets containing low energy (DE) and low energy-low protein (DEDP) supplemented with enzyme on the performance of broiler chicks between 0 and 21 days of age. In the first experiment, three diets, namely, control, low energy (DE) and low energy-protein (DEDP) based on corn-soybean meal, were formulated. In the second experiment, control and three diets containing 40% wheat which have normal energy-protein (NENP), low energy (DE) and low energy-protein (DEDP) levels were used. The enzyme was added to the experimental diets, except …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The effects of physical texture of feed and feeding regimes in broiler's gizzards were observed. Firstly, chicks were divided into three groups. The chicks in groups A, B and C were fed on mash, mash + pellet and crumble + pellet respectively. These groups were exposed to ad libitum and meal feeding, and grit was added to this feed. On day fourty-two, the chicks were sacrificed and the characteristics of the gizzard were observed. The impact of adding grit to the broiler rations on the weight and volume of the gizzard of broiler having ad-libitum rations was investigated. Statistically significant …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, the effects of feeds supplemented with DL-alanine and betaine on the growth and chemical composition of fingerling rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. Fish fed with DL-alanine (1.5% of diet) and betaine (1.5% of diet) supplemented diets had greater weight gains (35.36±1.81g and 38.47±3.02 g respectively) than those fed a control diet (28.32±0.31 g). It was found that the groups fed with attractant supplemented diets had better feed conversion and protein efficiency ratios than the control group. Whole body dry matter, fillet and whole body crude ash and crude protein ratios were similar in all the groups. …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, the chemical components of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822), which is distributed in Aksu Stream in the Antalya region of Turkey, and their suitable utilization methods were investigated. 68% fish flesh yield, 16.58% protein, 75.44% moisture, 5.38% fat and 1.21% crude ash were established. Different processing methods, hot smoking boiling and roasting were applied. As a result of these applications, from the point of view of consumption, the most suitable product was determined to be the hot smoked one. The colour, smell, texture and taste of the product obtained with hot smoking were found to be optimum.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this research, the phenotypic parameters of fattening characteristics were determined and the of heritabilities of these traits were estimated in the Ile de France (IF) x Akkaraman (AK) (G_1) crossbreed male lambs. It was estimated that the widest genetic variation was daily live weight gain between the beginning of fattening and the 42nd and 56th day. It was concluded that the selection based on the daily live weight gain of the progenies to increase the meat yield in the IF X AK (G_1) sheep can be successful.

Flushing was also applied only to the sheep in the experimental group. Pregnancy rates of 90% and 92% were obtained in the experimental and control groups, respectively. 87% of the pregnant …
Bayesian Analysis Of Test Day Milk Yields In An Unbalanced Mixed Model Assuming Random Herd-Year-Month Effects, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat
Bayesian Analysis Of Test Day Milk Yields In An Unbalanced Mixed Model Assuming Random Herd-Year-Month Effects, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The main environmental effects in a mixed model are comparison or contemporary group effects or more precisely herd-year-month of calving subclass effects. The controversial subject of much discussion about the choice between treating contemporary group effects as fixed or as random has not still been settled in dairy cow evaluation. However, these effects are usually treated as fixed since nonrandom associations between sires and herds may lead to biased predictions if herd-year-month effects are accounted for as random. On the other hand, treating herd-year-month effects as random would increase the effective number of daughters or the information with which an …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, our aim was to determine the distribution of specific immunoreactivities in some regions of the digestive tract of the pike-perch (Stizostedion lucioperca) against the antisera Gastrin, Serotonin (5 HT), and Cholecystokinin (CCK). The samples were taken from the stomach, intestine and pyloric caeca and the Avidin-Biotin-Immunoperoxidase method was applied. At the end of this application the immunoreactivities against all antisera were observed as intensively in the cells of the gland and less in the cells of Lamina epithelialis. The most intensive regions of immunoreactive cells were determined as the fundus, pylorus, anterior intestine and pyloric caeca. Immunoreactivity …
