The monomorphism of newly hatched chicks is a major hurdle for poultry farmers at the time of sexing. The traditional sexing techniques are inaccurate and time-consuming. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-based sex determination method to obtain a higher separation accuracy rate as compared to conventional methods. LAMP is a simple, quick, and relatively inexpensive diagnostic tool. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood samples of Leghorn and Korean native chicks for LAMP. Two sets of primer were designed, consisting of four isothermal amplification primers in each, to amplify the female sex-specific sequence (HUR0417) …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was undertaken to measure the effect of fattening duration (60, 80, and 100 days) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of male kids from indigenous Hair and Honamlı goat breeds reared under intensive fattening systems in Turkey. Fattening duration had a significant effect (P < 0.001) on the fattening performance and a number of carcass characteristics of kids. An interaction was detected between genotype and fattening duration for average daily gain (ADG). Hair goat kids grew at a faster rate than Honamlı kids in the 20-40 day and 40-60 day fattening periods, but they maintained relatively similar ADGs within other fattening periods. On average, over the course of the fattening trial, Honamlı kids grew at an average daily rate of 209 g/head, while Hair goat kids grew at a daily rate of 231 g/head. Dressing percentage and carcass lean and fat percentages of kids increased (P < 0.05-0.001) with slaughter age and weight for both genotypes, whereas the percentage of bone decreased (P < 0.001) with each successive fattening period. No genotypic differences were detected for a number of carcass characteristics at the time of slaughter, with the exception of relatively higher (P < 0.01) fat deposit rates within the kidney and pelvic areas for Hair kids.

Effects Of Long-Term Starvation And Refeeding On Fatty Acid Metabolism-Relatedgene Expressions In The Liver Of Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, Ayşe Ölmez, Mehtap Bayir, Chunfang Wang, Abdulkadi̇r Bayir
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A 70-day starvation was conducted to determine the effects of long-term starvation on whole-body polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition and fatty acid metabolism-related gene expression in the liver of zebrafish, Danio rerio. The starvation period was followed by a 15-day refeeding period to test recovery of both PUFA composition and gene expression levels. It was found that n-3 PUFA and arachidonic acid levels increased during starvation and returned to normal values after refeeding (P < 0.05). Expression of seven (elovl5, fads2, cpt1-β, acox1, acadvl, fabp1a, and fabp7a) of eight total genes downregulated significantly towards the end of the starvation. As a result of refeeding, gene expression of elovl5 and ppar-α returned to the normal levels. Therefore, it was concluded that, in general, mRNA expression of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism was negatively influenced by long-term starvation (70 days); there was no direct relationship between whole-body fatty acid composition and hepatic gene expressions; and 15-day refeeding was insufficient for recovery of starvation-based metabolic losses in zebrafish.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and PK/PD ratios of a new solvate of enrofloxacin (enrofloxacin hydrochloride-dihydrate; enro-C), were studied in hamsters. Enrofloxacin from Baytril1397904493 5% (enroR) served as the reference preparation. Two groups of 60 Syrian golden hamsters were intramuscularly injected individually with 10 mg/kg of enroR or with enro-C. Tissue and serum samples were obtained for 72 h; enrofloxacin concentrations were determined by HPLC with UV detection. Ninety percent minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC90) were determined for strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Leptospira interrogans, and Escherichia coli. All PK variables were statistically different between groups (P < 0.01). CMAX of enrofloxacin for enro-C was 17.3 μg/mL and it was 2.6 μg/mL for enroR. AUC was considerably higher for enro-C (459.2 μg/mL h vs. 19.9 μg/mL h). There were no statistically significant differences in MIC90 values between enroR and enro-C. Tissue concentrations of enro-C in all cases were higher and remained above the MIC for longer periods than those of enroR. Relevant PK/PD ratios for enrofloxacin (AUC/MIC ? 125 and CMAX > MIC = 10-12) are consequently …

Estimation Of Genetic And Phenotypic Parameters For Daily Milk Yield Of Black Bengal Does, Md. Mohan Mia, Mobarak Akter Md. Yahia Khandoker, Syed Sakhawat Husain, Md. Omar Faruque, David Russell Notter
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic and phenotypic parameters for daily milk yield (DMY) in Black Bengal does. Genetic parameters were estimated using a residual maximum likelihood procedure, fitting an animal model while ignoring maternal genetic or permanent environmental effects. The least squares mean for DMY was 354.76 g. DMY was significantly (P < 0.01) affected by parity, litter size, and season of kidding. The heritability of DMY was low (0.15) and the fact that the trait can only be measured in females suggests that progeny testing may be the best sire selection method for this trait.

Twenty male Barbados lambs (3 months old) were used to evaluate the effects of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO_3) supplementation on growth performance and carcass characteristics of lambs fed concentrate diets in controlled-environment chambers set at 20 °C and 30 °C. In the 35-week-long growth trial, the animals were divided into 4 groups (n = 5) and fed 2 dietary treatments: a basal diet (35:65 roughage and concentrate) or a basal diet supplemented with 4% NaHCO_3. Twelve lambs randomly selected from this trial were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial design for a 10-day-long slaughter and carcass evaluation experiment. Lambs in …

Phenotypic and genetic parameters among udder traits (udder depth, UD; median suspensory line, MS; fore udder attachment, FUA; rear udder height, RUH; rear udder width, RUW), final score (FS), and milk production traits (305-day milk yield, 305 DM; 305-day milk-fat yield, 305 DF; 305-day milk-protein yield, 305 DP) were estimated using a derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood procedure with an animal model. The results showed that heritability estimates for selected traits ranged from 0.11 to 0.24. Strong positive genetic correlations were observed for MS, RUH, and RUW with FS (0.42-0.72). A positive genetic relationship was also estimated between MS and 305 …

This study examines the effect of grandparent, parent, and hybrid brown chickens, selected from 3 generations of pure lines, on hybrid egg-laying performance. The study was conducted at the Poultry Research Station of Ankara. In the first stage, 4 grandparent lines were derived from 2 pure line base populations. Grandparent lines included 2 male lines (low body weight and high egg weight) and 2 female lines (low body weight and high egg production). In the second stage, grandparent male and female lines were reciprocally crossed to produce 4 parent lines. In the third stage, male and female parental lines were …

The aim of this study was to assess the content of selected minerals (Ca, K, Na, Mg, S, P, Pb, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Ni) and moisture values in types of pastırma (sırt, kuşgömü, bohça, and şekerpare), a dry-cured meat product. Forty-four samples of pastırma were collected from Turkey and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) for quantitative determination. Na content was the highest out of all the other minerals in all the pastırma types (31.9-47.7 g kg^{-1} dry weight). The determined mean ranges of heavy metals were 2.6 ± 0.5 to 3.6 ± 0.8 Pb, 245.3 ± …

The midgut bacterial flora of post-blood meal and starved or digested blood meal of hard ticks (Hyalomma anatolicum) from goats were analyzed using BOX PCR, ERIC PCR and 16S rDNA gene sequencing. BOX PCR and ERIC PCR showed dissimilar band patterns between microbial isolates from the midgut of the ticks. In total, 9 bacterial species belonging to 2 genera (Bacillus and Staphylococcus) were identified in the midgut of both types (post-blood meal and digested blood meal) of tick by using 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The majority of the midgut bacterial species were Staphylococcus sp. (90%) and there was a high …
