The Water Quality And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Paul Barding

The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna and 15 water quality parameters for five sites on Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois were examined for 26 weeks from March 14 through September 5, 1974. None of the water quality parameters studied showed sufficient deviations at any particular area on the lake to merit demarcated water quality zonation. The lake, with its continuous mixing and shallow depth, represented a fairly stable and continuous environment. The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was determined as fairly diverse and some indication of seasonal variation was apparent. The adrenal physiology of the albino rat was studied through the measurement of adrenal ascorbic acid levels. A cyclic phenomenon was observed which follows the diel periodicity of the animal. Ascorbic acid values were found to be characteristically higher in males than in females. A similar difference was also seen in populations divided into young animals (body weight less than 175 grams) and old animals (body weight greater than 175 grams). Crowding, induced by manipulating the area of cage space per gram of body weight, was observed to be a definite stressor and caused the adrenal ascorbic acid levels to …

Crayfish were collected from 3 sites on Polecat Creek, Coles County, Illinois in early spring, early summer, and late summer of 1972. Pesticides were extracted from the crayfish tissue in a one step procedure utilizing a Florisil elution column. Analysis was by electron capture gas chromatography. Pesticide residues in the nannogram range were analyzed and background contamination was an important consideration. Sources of background contamination were investigated and teflon stopcocks, Florisil, and residues on “cleaned” glassware were found to be major contamination sources. Distilled water used in flushing glassware should also be considered a potential contamination source.

Gastro-Intestinal And Abdominal Helminths Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) From Carroll And Jo Daviess Counties In Northern Illinois, Jeffrey Joseph Hodge

Forty-four white-tailed deer shot by hunters in November and December, 1971, in Carroll and Jo Daviess counties in northwestern Illinois were necropsied for gastro-intestinal and abdominal helminths. Five species of gastro-intestinal nematodes were found: Gongylonema pulchrum, Ostertagia odocoilei, Haemonchus contortus, Trichuris ovis and Nematodirus sp. Setaria yehi, a filiariad nematode, was found in the abdominal cavity. Moniezia benedeni was the only cestode found. No trematodes were recovered. Differences in numbers and kinds of parasites found in northern Illinois and southern Illinois are discussed. Prevalence increased with host age for certain species of parasites and decreased or …

The diurnal rhythm of adrenal ascorbic acid (DAR) displays an inverse relationship to the diurnal rhythm of circulating levels of plasma corticosteroids. Alloxan monohydrate, 175 mg/kg body weight was given subcutaneously to albino rats to determine the effect of the diabetic state on the DAR. A total of 200 female albino rats were divided into two study groups. Study Group I was composed of 150 animals divided into populations of 15, each including 3 controls. Seasonal changes within the tubular and interstitial areas of the testes in Sternotherus odoratus are investigated, histologically and histochemically. Forty specimens were collected in Illinois, Tennessee and Louisiana between May, 1969 and August, 1972.

Many of the histological and macroscopic observations made by Risley (1938) on the spermatogenic cycle of S. odoratus in Michigan are confirmed. Contrary to his findings, fluctuations in interstitial cell nuclear diameters are observed during spermatogenesis. Greatest diameters coincide with what Risley has considered " . . . period of most active breeding." Parasites From Gizzard Shad, Dorosoma Cepedianum, In Lake Charleston, Illinois, Francis M. Yabai Kaikumba

Eighty gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) from Lake Charleston, Charleston, Illinois were examined for parasites. Eight fish were parasitized. Three fish contained the acanthocephalan Tanaorhamphus longirostris, three fish harbored cestodes of the genus Glaridacris and two fish had the nematode Camallanus oxycephalus. The latter is here reported for the first time from gizzard shad. Twenty fish were infected with the fungus Saprolegnia sp. The numbers of helminth parasites harbored by shad are less than reported for other forage fish. However, the incident of parasitism reported in this study is greater than that reported by previous workers.

Ten garter snakes were tested for runway acquisition, correct turn response in a simple T-maze, or both, for food reinforcement. Seven of seven subjects met criterion for learning to run a 23 inch long alleyway. Mean latency times showed a general decrease over a 23 day period. Five of nine subjects met criterion for learning a correct turn response in a simple T-maze. Subjects mastering the task required from 14-157 trials. One of two subjects met criterion for learning the reverse response of the T-maze exercise, requiring 35 trials. Results are similar to those previously reported for reptiles and other …

In November and December 1971, forty deer from five southern Illinois counties were examined by necropsy for gastro-intestinal and abdominal helminths. The viscera of 103 bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus), from east central Illinois counties, were collected during November and December of 1971 and examined for helminth parasites. Two nematodes were identified: Dispharynx nasuta (9.7%) and Ascaridia sp. (7.8%). The rate of infection varied significantly between counties but there was no difference in parasitism of males and females.

Home Range And Movement Of Fox Squirrels In East Central Illinois, Michael D. Sliva

Home ranges and movements were determined for 11 fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) and analyzed with respect to the distribution of mast trees and den trees on a 12¼ acre wooded plot in east central Illinois. Average home range size for all squirrels was 0.9 acres. The home range of adult squirrels averaged 1.5 acres while juveniles averaged 0.8 acres. Females had larger home ranges (1.4 acres) than males (0.6 acres). The average distance moved within the home range was 360 feet for all squirrels. Two species of peracarid malacostracans, a mysid, Neomysis americana, and an oniscid isopod, Trachelipus cf. rathkei, were used to study the skeletomusculature system. Serial sections, whole mounts, and gross dissections were made. Coxal promotors and remotors and basal adductors and abductors were the muscle groups examined.

The promotor and remotor muscles of N. americana were found to be numerous, well developed, taking origin primarily from the dorsal thoracic wall, and extending nearly ventrally to insert in the coxa; the adductor muscle and two abductor muscles are weakly developed. Preliminary Observations On The Effects Of Treflan To Fishes, P. Bradley Latvaitis

Treflan E.C. is a selective, preemergence, soil incorporated herbicide. Preliminary tests were made to evaluate its effects at concentrations of 0.75, 1.275 and 1.8 p.p.m. on twenty species of fresh water fishes in the laboratory. The herbicide was proven to be a powerful fish toxicant. Centrarchus, Cichlasoma centrarchus, was the most resistant fish tested, while Bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, was among the least resistant. Treflan E.C. decomposes and degrades rapidly. It was also found to interact with plastics. Further studies are necessary to provide a complete investigation of the effects of Treflan on Fishes.

Nocturnal activity (Zugunruhe) of eight caged, radio-tagged thrushes (Hylocichla spp.) was compared by signal analysis with the occurrence of migration in 16 free, radio-tagged thrushes over a 37-night period during the autumn of 1970 in central Illinois. The study was conducted to determine the extent of synchrony of Zugunruhe and migration in these nocturnal migrants in fall. Zugunruhe frequently occurred on nights when there was no migration, but migration occurred only on nights when at least 50 per cent of the caged birds were active. The mucus from land snail specimens of Anguispira kochi collected from Coles and Edgar counties, Illinois, emits a blue fluorescence when exposed to ultra-violet light. Pseudomonas, a genus of bacteria which produces fluorescent pigments, has been isolated from the mucus of these snails. The object of the study was to compare the fluorescence of the mucus from individuals of A. kochi with the fluorescence of the pigments produced on a synthetic medium by pseudomonads isolated from the mucus of these snails. Brindled madtoms and small channel catfish (140 mm or less) were examined to determine their food habits and the possibility of competition for food organisms between the two species when collected from the same area.

Two hundred twenty-three brindled madtoms were collected from Polecat Creek (study area I) 3 miles southwest of Ashmore, Coles County, Illinois. The study in Polecat Creek was conducted from July 10, 1967 to June 5, 1968, collections being made approximately every month. Thirty-seven male Chelydra s. serpentina were collected from Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Wisconsin during months of activity from May, 1969 to June 1971. Carapace length for each specimen was measured, and testes and epididymides were dissected out, weighed, measured, fixed, and preserved in Baker's neutral formalin within seven days of capture. Paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Frozen sections were stained with Sudan IV.

The spermatogenic cycle was similar to those of other Chelonians and reptiles exhibiting post-nuptial spermatogenesis. In Illinois spermatocytogenesis begins in late March or early April. Meiosis is evident throughout May and early June. …
