Metabolic Rates And Bioenergetics Of Juvenile Sandbar Sharks (Carcharhinus Plumbeus), W. Wesley Dowd

The lower Chesapeake Bay and adjacent coastal waters serve as the primary summer nursery areas for juvenile sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus) in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. The large population of juvenile sandbar sharks in this ecosystem benefits from increased food availability that fuels rapid growth and from limited exposure to large shark predators. Juvenile growth and survival is the most critical life history stage for sandbar sharks, and juvenile nursery grounds will continue to play an important role in the slow recovery of this stock from severe population declines due to overfishing. The Chesapeake Bay and coastal waters of Virginia, U.S.A. serve as foraging grounds for loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempi) sea turtles from approximately May to October each year. Both loggerheads and Kemp’s ridleys are known to feed primarily on benthic invertebrates as juveniles and adults, but specific prey preferences vary between geographic regions. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science Sea Turtle Program has collected diet data and gut samples from stranded and incidentally caught sea turtles in Virginia since 1979. Examination of turtles that stranded in Virginia during the late 1970s and early 1980s indicated that loggerheads …

Synalpheus Shrimp From Carrie Bow Cay, Belize. Systematics, Phylogenetics And Biological Observations (Crustacea: Decapoda: ; Alpheidae), Ruben Rios Gonzalez

Snapping shrimp in the family Alpheidae are remarkably abundant in coral reef ecosystems worldwide. The second most speciose genus, Synalpheus , includes species usually small and reclusive, and their general morphology is notably uniform, yet the number of species is staggeringly high, as is the intraspecific variability. These features have contributed to a poorly resolved taxonomic status, as evidenced both by recurring lumping and splitting of species and by lack of proper definition of several common species. The Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program (VGFTP), in its eighth year during 2002, systematically trains and assists anglers in tagging a select number of species important to Virginia's marine recreational fishery and maintains the resulting tagging database. A cooperative project of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), the program is primarily funded with revenues from Virginia's saltwater recreational fishing license funds (Recreational Fishing Development Fund). In addition, support for the program is provided by Virginia's Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program at VIMS.

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the use of a floating bag method of oyster cultivation on the Seaside of Va. The use of a disease resistant seed stock. The use of a strict protocol, which involved aggressive culling and, removal of slower growing animals early on in the grow-out phase.

The intent of this project was to create a modular housing that could be used with standard bilge pumps to reduce oily discharges in Virginia waterways. In designing the housing the most important factor would be the total percentage of petroleum reduction that would be realized . However, in order to reap the benefits of the housings they would have to meet certain requirements in order for boat owners to install them in a significant number of vessels.

This validation study was conducted during the months of July, August and Sept., 2003. The Food and Drug Administration and the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference require that oysters used for a validation study are collected during the same processing day, are from the same lot of shellfish, and have an adjusted geometric mean (AGM) MPN of at least I 00,000/g of Vibrio vulnificus as an initial load. The oysters were removed from refrigerated storage and held at 71 °F (21 °C) for 40-45 hours prior to freezing in order to achieve a minimum AGM of 100,000/g Vibrio vulnificus . After …

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VlMS) has conducted a juvenile striped bass seine -ey from 1967 through 1973 and from 1980 through the present. The primary objective has been the monitoring of the relative amnal recruitment success ofjuvenile stripedbass in the spawning and nursery areas of Lower Chesapeake Bay. Initially (1967-1973), the survey was funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and when reinstated in 1980 with funding from the National Marine Fisheries Service under the Emergency Striped Bass Study program.
