Potential Range Of The Zebra Mussel, Dreissena Polymorpha, In And Near Virginia, Patrick Baker, Shirley Baker, Roger L. Mann
Potential Range Of The Zebra Mussel, Dreissena Polymorpha, In And Near Virginia, Patrick Baker, Shirley Baker, Roger L. Mann
Reports
This publication is devoted to predictions of the probability of invasion by the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha (and the quagga mussel, Dreissena sp.) to specific bodies of water in Virginia. Probability of invasion is divided into risk and susceptibility. Risk refers to the chance, relative to other sites, that a body of water will be inoculated with Dreissena, in sufficient number to establish a population. Inoculation can occur by natural dispersal, but in the mid-Atlantic region is most likely to-occur though accidental introduction by humans, especially via boat traffic. Susceptibility of a body of water refers to the probability, based …

Harvesting Efficiency And Size Selectivity Of 3.25 And 3.50 Inch Ring Sea Scallop Dredges : Final Cruise Report, William Dupaul
Harvesting Efficiency And Size Selectivity Of 3.25 And 3.50 Inch Ring Sea Scallop Dredges : Final Cruise Report, William Dupaul
Reports
Sea scallop dredges constructed with 3.25 inch (82 mm) and 3.50 inch (87 mm) rings were towed side-by-side to assess differences in harvesting efficiency and size selectivity of sea scallops (Piacopecten magellanicus). One hundred tows were made within the Canadian portion of Georges Bank from the northern edge eastward and south to the southeastern pari near Corsair Canyon. Quantities of and size distribution of scallops harvested were assessed for each dredge. Data will be analyzed to assess size selectivity and technical efficiency of scallop vessels operating in both the U.S. and Canadian portion of Georges Bank and factors affecting the …

Quantification Of Settlement And Recruitment Processes In Bivalve Mollusks, Patrick Kelly Baker
Quantification Of Settlement And Recruitment Processes In Bivalve Mollusks, Patrick Kelly Baker
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Studies were carried out to quantify abundance, mortality, and variability in these parameters, during settlement and recruitment of bivalve mollusks, using the oyster, Crassostrea virginica, as a primary model species. Most work was undertaken in the York River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, with additional work in the Indian River, Florida. The period chosen, in the bivalve early life history, was from the late planktonic larva to the early benthic juvenile. Studies were designed to specifically examine (a) abundance of late-stage larvae in the plankton, (b) the relationship between larval abundance and settlement, and (c) mortality immediately following settlement. Variability in abundance …
Age, Growth And Population Dynamics Of The Sandbar Shark, Carcharhinus Plumbeus, At Different Population Levels, Thomas R. Sminkey
Age, Growth And Population Dynamics Of The Sandbar Shark, Carcharhinus Plumbeus, At Different Population Levels, Thomas R. Sminkey
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The objectives of my research were to test the hypothesis that compensatory (density-dependent) growth of sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus) occurred after severe population reduction, to describe the juvenile sandbar shark fauna present in the Chesapeake Bay during 1980-81 and 1990-93, and to perform demographic analyses to examine potential population growth. Age and growth of sandbar sharks were investigated by counting rings in vertebral samples collected in 1980-81 and 1991-92. Age at maturity was 15-16 years for both sample periods and both sexes. For sexes combined, the von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L&\sb{lcub}\infty{rcub}& = 199 cm precaudal length (PCL), K = …

The Status Of Virginia's Public Oyster Resource 1993, Reinaldo Alonzo-Morales, Roger Mann
Reports
This report summarizes data collected during 1993 in the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay. The report is composed of two parts, part one, oyster recruitment (shell string) in Virginia and part two, dredge survey of selected oyster bars in Virginia.
Evidence For A Relation Between A White Perch Young-Of-The-Year Index And Indices Of Later Life Stages, Thomas C. Mosca Iii, Herbert Austin, David M. Plotner
Evidence For A Relation Between A White Perch Young-Of-The-Year Index And Indices Of Later Life Stages, Thomas C. Mosca Iii, Herbert Austin, David M. Plotner
Reports
Juvenile indices are employed in fisheries management to predict the future relative abundance of harvestable adults and to monitor the success of management efforts. Frequently, regulations controlling utilization of the resource, and a lack of fishery independent abundance data, make verification of the prediction impossible. In the case of white perch (Morone americana) in Virginia, this is not so. Using the weighting system developed for a Chesapeake Bay-wide index of juvenile striped bass abundance based on summertime beach seine data collected in nursery ground waters, we developed a similar index for white perch in the Virginia portion of the Bay. …
