In this research, the shelf-life of vacuum-packed Rainbow trouts ( Salmo gairdneri) in 80° salinometer for 4 hours and then, treated by cold smoking (for 8 hours at 28°C) and by hot smoking (smoking was carried out in these steps: first, at 30°C for 30 minutes; second, at 50°C for 30 minutes and then, samples were cooked at 80°C for 45 minutes) was determined during the storage periods at +4±1°C and -18±1°C. Salmonella arizonae infection was detected in guinea pigs kept for breeding. Two months old 50 quinea pigs were died in the breedig unit. Three death and 2 live guinea pigs were brought to Veterinary Faculty of İstanbul. The live 2 were euthanasied and necropcy was performed on all guinea pigs. The fluid about 50 cc. in the abdomen, the necrosis and pseudomembranes in the liver and spleen were observed. On histopathology, the foci of various coagulative necrosis were seen in the liver. Prostaglandin F2a was commonly used for synchronisation in mares. The purpose of this study was to see the effect of single and double doses of PGF2a on estrous, ovulation and pregnancy rates. Therefore 43 Thoroughbred mares, between 4-17 years old, were used. Thirty mares 10 mg PGF2a (Dinoprost Tromethamine, Dinolytic) was injected intramuscularly, regardless of the stage of the estrous cycle, for synchronization. In this study, pathological findings were observed in experimental salmonellosis in mice. S. enteritidis PT 1, 4 and 7 strains isolated from chikens were used. Suspensions containing 10 9 and 10 8 of bacteria were inoculated orally to 36 mice. Anorexia, dullness, mild diarrhea, shudder, fever and death were observed in 9 mice. No clinical signs were seen in other mice. In macroscobic examinations, enlargement of liver and spleen, hyperemia and watery content were observed in intestines. In microscobic examinations, hyperemia, degeneration, necrosis and reticular cell hyperplasy in spleen. In addition, hyperemia, epithelial degeneration and necrosis were seen in the …

In this research, the effect of liquid smoke on the chemical, microbiological, physical and sensorial properties of Frankfurters were investigated. For this purpose, prepared sausage batters according to the standard formula were stuffed into the casings and divided into three groups before cooking and smoking. Sausages were smoked by using three different methods: natural smoking, dipping into 0.25% liquid smoke for 6 minutes and pulverization of 0.25% liquid smoke for 6 minutes. In this study, two porcupines (Hystrix cristata) were used to investigate the bones of fore limb. It was observed that the area of fossa supraspinata (54.7%) was larger than that of fossa infraspinata (45.3%). Processus hamatus and processus suprahamatus were present and processus coracoideus was well developed. Tuberculum majus elevated slightly over the level of caput humeri. Tuberositas deltoidea was well developed and tuberositas teres major et minor were prominent. Foramen supratrochleare, crista epicondyli lateralis and sulcus ulnaris were present. This study was performed on 100 sheep, of which 50 were Morkaraman and 50 were Tuj, grown up in the pasture conditions in and around Kars. The serum zinc and copper values of the animals were analysed with Atomic Absorbtion Spectrophotometre. The serum zinc and copper values were respectively determined as; 40.56 ± 5.6 µg/dl, 80.10 ± 7.49 µg/dl in Morkaramans and, 38.72 ± 5.32 µg/dl, 75.04 ± 6.58 µg/dl in Tujs. There were no significant differences between the value of zinc and copper statistically.

In this study, presence of antibodies to Ehrlichia risticii in the sera of 100 throughbreed horses brought to Turkey Jockey Club Stud from different regions was investigated by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA), western immunoblotting, indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and competetive ELISA (CELISA) using monoclonal antibody. Ten sera gave various degrees of flourescence on IFA test. The sera giving fluorescence were sent to University of Maryland and the test was repeated. The results were similar. A seven-month-old male collie was brought to our clinic with complaints of exhaustaion and fatigue for the past month, inability to stand on its hind legs, loss of voice and anorexia for the past week. In clinical examination, increase in heart frequency, difficulty in lifting the head, tetraparesis, regurgitation and urinary incontinence were observed. Low-fat Edam cheese was manufactured using conventional cheese-making procedures using low-fat milk (1.5% fat). The cheese samples were aged for six months at 5 to 6°C. The cheese was analyzed for biochemical characteristics and peptide content. The peptide contents were determined with reverse phase chromatography. The association property of proteins and peptides in the soluble fraction of the cheese was determined using hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The overall peptide quantity increased with age with a marked increase in hydrophobic peptide content.

Twenty naturally infected horses were divided into two groups (10 control and 10 experimental) according to EPG values. An injectable formulation of moxidectin, in a dose of 0.3 mg/kg, was given to the horses orally in jam syrup. The evaluation of drug efficacy was based on EPG values. The same dose of the drug was applied to an additional 25 horses to test for side effects. The drug was found to be highly effective (100%) against strongylin parasites on days 7, 14. and 21. No side effects were observed.

The chi-square and Wishart distributions play an important role in animal breeding applications, especially in the estima-tion of variance components using Bayesian methods. These two distributions are so related that one can easily be derived from the other. In other words, the chi-square distribution is a particular case of the Wishart distribution or the Wishart distribution is a mul-tivariate generalization of the chi-square distribution. This article provides a simple mathematical basis of the above-mentioned dis-tributions; it shows how one is derived from the other and in what from they are used in animal breeding applications.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of formaldehyde and blood treatments of sunflower meal on the degra-dation characteristics and effective degradability of dry matter(DM), organic matter and crude protein. Sunflower meal treated with 0.8 g formaldehyde/100 g crude protein, 0.5, 0.75, 1.5 and 2 L whole blood/kg DM. Three adult rumen fistulated merino rams were used in this study. This study was carried out to investigate the glutathione level in Morkaraman, Morkaraman x Dorsetdown (F1) and Morkaraman x Corriedale (F1) lambs and to demonstrate its relationship with birth-weight and live-weight gain. Fourtyone Morkaraman, 36 Morkaraman x Dorsetdown, 30 Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs were used as animal materials. Blood samples obtained from the animals were analysed by using spectrophotometric technique for the level of glutathione. Primer oocytes (n=157) collected from ovaries of slaughtered cows were matured at 39°C with 95-100% humidity and under a gas mixture of 5% O 2 , 5% CO 2 and 90% N 2 for 22 (n=52), 24 (n=52) and 26 (n=53) hours. Hibernation pattern and changes in the body weight of juvenile and adult dormice, Glis glis orientalis, kept in uncontrolled conditions were investigated. It was determined that G.g.orientalis entered hibernation on October 28 when its body weight was 180 g and the ambient temperature was below 18 ºC, which seems to be the critical temperature for entering hibernation. Although body weight has an important role in entering hibernation at the beginning of the hibernation season, dormice hibernated as the hibernation season progressed regardless of their body weight. In this study, the early development of barbel ( Barbus barbus L.) larvae has been determined by measuring their wet weight, dry weight, whole body mineral content (Ca, Mg, Na and K), skeletal development and gill development. It has been observed that wet weight, whole body mineral contents, the number of lamellae per filament of gill and the number of calcified vertebrae of larvae during early development stage increased by age, whereas dry weight decreased. Concentrations of cadmium, lead, copper, chromium and nickel were determined in the gill, liver and muscle of Cyprinus carpio, Barbus capito and Chondrostoma regium caught at 5 stations on the Seyhan river system. Heavy metal concentrations in the tissues tended to vary significantly among stations, and one station thought to be contaminated by hospital effluents showed particularly high metal concentration. Liver and gill tissues showed higher metal concentrations than muscle tissue. The wild boar control trials were conducted in rice fields in the districts of Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gujrat, covering an overall area of 3000 hectares. Zinc phosphide encapsulated bait was used resulting in 80-100% reductions in wild boar activity. In addition, the impact of the boar control work on the crop productivity was evaluated by interviewing 391 farmers selected randomly from the trial areas. The average farm size of the sampled farmers was 426.30 hectares. The average yield loss due to wild boars was estimated at 22.75%. Among the filariaris causing mosquitoes Culex fatigans is considered an important intermediate host in South-East Asia. Toxicity of ethanolic extract of neem leaves (NLX) is compared with an organophosphate pesticide malathion (57 E.C.). The LC 50 value of malathion (Sisthion) determined presently is 0.45 ppm against late 3rd instar larvae of Culex fatigans (wild strain) and of neem fraction (NLX) is 390 ppm by standard WHO method.

Geographic Variations And Taxonomic Status Of Myotis Myotis (Borkhausen,1797) In Turkey ( Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), İrfan Albayrak, Nursel Aşan

This study is a taxonomical evaluation of 146 specimens of Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797) collected in Turkey between 1974 and 1994. Turkish Myotis myotis were compared with records from the Palaearctic Region. It was determined that both Myotis myotis myotis and Myotis myotis macrocephalicus are distributed in Turkey. The diagnostic characters, habitat, pelage colour, external and cranial measurements and distribution of each taxon were recorded.

In this study, ecology and biology of Microtus guentheriwere investigated based on both field and laboratory observations along with its effects on agricultural crops. It was determined that this vole has a shallow burrow with numerous entrances and does not store food in its burrow. In captivity, M. guentherigave litters from September to June and a female produced 42 pups, being seven litters during a reproduction season. The duration of pregnancy varied 20 to 21 days. In this study, the growth properties of tench ( Tinca tincaL., 1758) in the Kesikköprü Dam Lake between April 1995 and March 1996 were studied. In the specimens examined, ages ranged from I-VI in both sexes. The population was 51.43% female and 48.57% male. The fork length and weight in ranged from 16.1 to 41.4 cm and from 85 to 1350 g, respectively, and in males from 15.8 to 40.3 cm and from 83 to 1127 g, respectively.
