The Morphological And Morphometric Characteristics Of Alabadem Pigeons, Evren Erdem, Fatma Tüli̇n Özbaşer, Eser Kemal Gürcan, Mehmet İhsan Soysal

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study aimed to determine the morphological and morphometric characteristics of Alabadem pigeons, which are grown as ornamental pigeons in Edirne province, and to determine mutual traits with other indigenous pigeon breeds in Turkey by comparing with previous studies. Body weight (P < 0.001), head length (P < 0.01), head width (P < 0.05), beak length (P < 0.001), and tarsus diameter (P < 0.05) of age group III were higher than those of other age groups; however, the wingspan of age group II was greater than that of other age groups in Alabadem pigeon. Compared to other indigenous genotypes in Turkey, the Alabadem pigeon is a small-sized genotype. Alabadem pigeons were similar to Edremit butterfly pigeons and Thracian tumbler pigeons in terms of crested and blackeyed pigeons. On the other hand, the irregularly shaped mark (almond) on the head in Alabadem pigeons was similar to the wide-long irregular shaped mark on the neck of Edremit butterfly pigeons. Some basic plumage colors (black, yellow, and red) and intermediate colors (chickpea and scarlet) were identical to Alabadem pigeons and Thrace roller pigeons. Since Alabadem pigeons have many mutual characteristics with Edremit butterfly pigeons and Thracian roller pigeons, genetic studies may be recommended to determine the degree of relationship among these breeds.

The Relationship Of Leptin And Thyroid Hormones With Milk Yield And Some Fertilityparameters In Simmental Dairy Cows During Transition Period, Özkan Duru, Alparslan Kadi̇r Devri̇m, Hasan Ceyhun Macun, Si̇bel Yasa Duru, Ali̇ Şenol

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, transition period cows were used to test the hypothesis that serum levels of leptin and thyroid hormones would correlate the production efficiency such as milk yield, body condition score, and fertility in dairy cows raised under the same controlled conditions. The study comprised 37 Simmental cows, which were 3 years old and between 257-265 days of gestation. Serum levels of leptin, T3, T4, FT3, and FT4 hormones were measured in blood samples obtained from the animals, which were in the period of 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after delivery. Prepartum serum leptin levels were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in cows having increased milk production compared to the first lactation peak value. Also, postpartum serum FT3 levels were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in cows having milk yield of ≥ 30 kg. Leptin levels were found to be inversely related with milk production and fertility. FT3 levels exhibited a negative correlation with milk production and similarly T3 levels showed an inverse correlation with body condition score. The present study proposed that routine monitoring of leptin and thyroid hormones would be useful for the reproductive management of cows with breeding problems.

The Sicilian Rock Partridge: Latest Data On Genetic Integrity From Four Different Relict Areas, Giusi Macaluso, Claudia Manno, Mario Lo Valvo, Marco Tolone, Salvatore Mastrangelo, Roberto Puleio, Guido Ruggero Loria

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Sicily (Italy) hosts a "relict", endemic population of the birds Alectoris graeca whitakeri commonly known as Sicilian Rock Partridge. In the last decades, due to the risk of restocking with other European and Asiatic species for hunting purpose, a study was carried out to investigate the potential risk of hybridisation. The mtDNA control-region and nuclear microsatellites were genotyped. Due to the importance of the species, samples were mainly characterized by feather and stool samples, and rarely by carcasses found in the environment, from year 2011 to 2012. A panel of 7 microsatellite loci was validated. Three multiplexes that allowed the …

Mediterranean cereal cyst nematode (CCN) Heterodera latipons is considered as one of the main CCN that causes significant economic losses in the production of intolerant cereal crops in Turkey. Accordingly, this study aimed at evaluating the effect of different storing temperatures and durations on the emergence of second-stage juveniles (J2s) of the nematode populations obtained from the eastern Mediterranean (Adana and Hatay) and south-eastern (Gaziantep and Kilis) regions of Turkey. The obtained results revealed a variation in the J2s hatching profiles of the regional nematode populations. The eastern-Mediterranean and the south-eastern populations hatched at between 5 and 20 °C; however, …

Identification And Characterisation Of Crustacean Hyperglycaemic Hormone (Chh) From Mediterranean Shore Crab Carcinus Aestuarii, Marsilda Qyli, Valbona Aliko, Riccardo Sgarra, Pi̇ero Giulio Giulianini, Chiara Manfrin

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Crustacean hyperglycaemic hormone (CHH) is a neuropeptide that was originally identified in the X-organ/sinus gland complex of the eyestalks (ESs) in crustaceans. Several CHH isoforms and spliced variants were later identified in other tissues, and their functions have still not been completely unveiled. In this study, the identification and characterisation of the conventional CHH prepropeptide from the ESs of the littoral crab, Carcinus aestuarii, via rapid amplification of cDNA ends was reported. The identified CHH resulted in a coding sequence of 429 bp, an estimatedprotein of 142 aa with a signal peptide of 26 aa, followed by a CHH precursorrelated …

The objective of this study is to provide information on the zooplankton community and physicochemical properties of Uzungöl Lagoon. Sampling studies were performed at monthly intervals for abiotic factors and community parameters between September 2015 and August 2016. The variations of zooplankton community were estimated using Shannon-Weiner diversity (H'), Pielou evenness (J), species richness (S), frequency, and dominancy indices. The relationship between environmental variables and community parameters were analyzed with Pearson?s correlation test and redundancy analysis (RDA). During the study, 39 species, most of which belonged to Rotifera, were recorded. The quantitative analysis indicated that most important fraction of zooplankton …
