Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study involved two separate experiments to determine the effects of tannic acid and lignosulfonate treatments of sunflower seed meal on the digestibility and rumen degradability characteristics of some nutrients in rams. Sunflower seed meal was treated with 3, 6 and 9% tannic acid, 5 and 10% lignosulfonate. In the first experiment, the digestibility coefficients of dry matter, organic matter and crude protein of sunflower seed meal samples were determined by a faeces collection method using 5 merino rams aged 1.5 years and weighing 66.5 kg. Tannic acid treatments of sunflower seed meal at the level of 3, 6 and …

Chemical And Sensory Changes Of Pike-Perch (Sander Lucioperca Bogustkaya & Naseka, 1996) Fillets During Frozen Storage (-18ºc), İlkan Ali̇ Olgunoğlu, Abdurrahman Polat, Işil Var
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, chemical and sensory changes were investigated in pike-perch (Sander lucioperca Bogustkaya & Naseka,1996) fillets during frozen storage (-18 ºC) of 7 months. Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N, mg N/100 g), thiobarbituric acid (TBA, mg malonaldehyde/1000 g) and pH were considered as chemical quality criteria of fish flesh. TVB-N value was 4.19 mg N/100 g at the beginning, but increased to 14.90 mg N/100 g at the end of the research. TBA and pH values were changed as 0.0208-0.0533 mg malonaldeyde/1000 g and 6.80-7.02 respectively. At the end of the study, the chemical quality did not reach the …

The Need For Confirmation In Coliform And E. Coli Enumeration In Foods, İbrahi̇m Çakir, Hi̇lal B. Doğan, Ensar Başpinar, Fi̇kret Keven, A. Kadi̇r Halkman
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
For food and environmental analysis, coliform bacteria and especially E. coli should be determined and enumerated rapidly, correctly and economically. Even if the results are obtained either by traditional or improved techniques, the results require confirmation, meaning that these techniques are not reliable. Confirmation tests need additional time and/or cost. In this study, 500 food samples of 10 various types were analyzed for their natural coliform contamination by the standard MPN method and E. coli by two MUG based MPN techniques. Enumeration results were statistically analyzed to determine whether confirmation tests for coliform and E. coli analysis are necessary or …

Light And Electron Microscopic Examination Of The Single Kidney Of Unilateral Nephrectomized Rats During Pregnancy, H. Hamdi̇ Çeli̇k, Mustafa F. Sargon
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The light microscopic and ultrastructural changes observed in the single kidney of pregnant rats were detected during mid-term pregnancy and after parturition and the results were compared with those of the pure nephrectomized group. The experimental studies were performed on 24 female virgin rats and all of them were subjected to unilateral nephrectomy. No pathology was observed in the light microscopic examination of the kidneys of the groups. In the transmission electron microscopic examination, in the pure nephrectomized group, cell swellings were present in the endothelial cells of the interlobular arteries and arterioles. Additionally, a mild cell swelling was seen …

Characterisation Of An Exopolysaccharide Preventing Phage Adsorption In Lactococcus Lactis Subsp. Cremoris Ma39, Mustafa Akçeli̇k, Pinar Şanlibaba
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris strain MA39 produces an extracellular polysaccharide containing rhamnose, glucose and galactose. A 16.5 kb plasmid encoding exopolysaccharide production in MA39 was determined by plasmid curing experiments. Phage adsorption assays showed that four different lactococcal phages were adsorbed to MA39-40; only the 16.5 kb plasmid cured an exopolysaccharide non-producing mutant of strain MA39, with high efficiency (93.2-98.5%) while adsorption of these phages was completely inhibited in the wild type strain MA39. These results suggest that exopolysaccharide prevents phage adsorption by masking phage receptor sites.

Male Wistar albino rats, bred and fed under standard laboratory conditions, were administered for 20 days two dosages [Group I: 750 mg/kg body weight (n = 15) and Group II: 1500 mg/kg body weight (n = 15)] of oral hexachlorobenzene resolved in corn oil. Control group animals (n = 15) received only corn oil for 20 days. Twenty-four hours after the administration of the last dose, renal tissue samples, obtained by laparotomy, were fixed in 3% glutaraldehyde in phosphate buffer and 1% aqueous osmium tetroxide. Following the routine tissue processing steps, samples were blocked in Araldyte CY 212. Ultrathin sections …

Renal Oxalosis In A Calf, M. Yavuz Gülbahar, Abdullah Kaya, İsmai̇l Gölen
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A case of neonatal renal oxalosis in a 7-day-old calf is described. Clinical biochemistry revealed increased blood urea nitrogen. Gross findings included thin renal medulla and dilated renal calyces containing numerous, small, pale yellow and granular calculi. Histologically, most cortical and medullary tubules were dilated with birefringent crystals, whereas the glomeruli appeared unaffected. The crystals were morphologically consistent with calcium oxalate by the Pizzolato technique. Diffuse interstitial fibrosis and focal accumulations of lymphocytes were also noted.

Some Assyriellaspecies In South East Anatolia In Turkey Differentiated By Multivariate Statistical Analysis (Gastropoda: Pulmonata, Helicidae), Hasan Akbayin, Murat Hevedanli, Ridvan Şeşen
Turkish Journal of Zoology
This study was performed on 3 species of the genus Assyriella ( A. escheriana , A. guttata and A. thospitis) collected from Diyarbakır province in Southeast Anatolia. Two derived and 6 shell variables of 50 specimens were examined for each species. Hierarchical clustering and discriminant analysis were used to evaluate the data in order to clarify and contribute to some systematic problems of these species. It was shown that Ward's method with Euclidean distance is the most appropriate hierarchical clustering method to cluster these species. A. escheriana is clearly differentiated from A. guttata and A. thospitis by both Ward's method …

Frequencies of the black and yellow forms of the 14-spot ladybird, Propylea quatuordecimpunctata, in the area showed a tendency to be associated with open and shaded habitats respectively. Moreover, the …

Molecular Cloning Of An \Alpha-Amylase Gene From Bacillus Subtilis Rskk246 And Its Expression In Escherichia Coli And In Bacillus Subtilis, Numan Özcan, Adem Altinalan, Mehmet Sai̇t Eki̇nci̇
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Bacillus subtilis RSKK246 was found to produce approximately a 65-kDa \alpha-amylase enzyme. A gene was isolated encoding \alpha-amylase activity that corresponded to this size and was inserted into pUC18 plasmid which was transferred to Escherichia coli. An approximately 1.7kbp fragment, which contains a whole \alpha-amylase gene, was excised and inserted into pUB110 and then transferred into the different B. subtilis strains including RSKK246, RSKK243, RSKK244, YB886 and ORBAM. The a-amylase gene was cloned into the plasmids and expressed with its own promoter, and this promoter sequence seemed to function in the E. coli and in all B. subtilis strains. Specific …
