Improving The Ecological Understanding Of Species Complexes: The Case Of Piscivory And Protracted Spawning In The Carp Gudgeon Group Hypseleotris Spp. (Eleotridae, Teleostei), Lorenzo Vilizzi, Ali̇ Serhan Tarkan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Species complexes are a common occurrence in freshwater fish assemblages and may often pose a challenge to the understanding of their ecology. A typical case is the `cryptic' carp gudgeon group Hypseleotris spp. in southeastern Australia, which is thought to comprise four closely related species occurring sympatrically within the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB), where flow delivery scenarios have been proposed for the management and conservation of the native fish faunas. The objective of this study was to provide a deeper insight into the occurrence of piscivory and protracted spawning seasons in Hypseleotris spp. based on six years of sampling, and to …

Sex Ratio Estimations Of Chelonia Mydas Hatchlings At Samandağ Beach, Turkey, Şükran Yalçin Özdi̇lek, Bektaş Sönmez, Yakup Kaska
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Samandağ Beach, an important nesting location for endangered green turtles (Chelonia mydas), is located at the most eastern part of the Mediterranean in Turkey. Hatchling sex ratio can be one of the key factors for green turtle protection, which is under the threat of global climate change. In this study, sex ratios of hatchlings were estimated by histological examination of dead hatchlings (n = 190) and by nest temperatures (n = 14) at Samandağ Beach between the 2003 and 2007 nesting seasons. The histological examination of dead C. mydas hatchlings and temperature-recorded nests indicated a female-biased sex ratio on Samandağ …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
We examined 71 fecal samples of European starling nestlings from Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, in the reproductive seasons of 2012 and 2013 to detect the presence of intestinal parasites and determine their prevalence. Total parasite prevalence was 26.8%. We found one coccidial species (Isospora sp.) with a prevalence of 25.35% and one cestode species with a prevalence of 1.4%. These values are lower than those reported for starlings from Europe and North America. Our results suggest that a reduction in the diversity of parasite species was likely to have occurred during the introduction process of this bird in Argentina, thus …

To date, 13 species of Ponto-Caspian amphipods have been reported from the inland waters of Turkey. Two, probably overlooked species, Echinogammarus trichiatus and Dikerogammarus villosus, are here recorded for the first time from this country. Due to the atypical morphology, the identity of E. Trichiatus was also verified with molecular methods, based on the mtDNA COI barcode. Both species, along with five other co-occurring Ponto-Caspian amphipods, were collected from Lake Durusu in September 2007. Our finding reveals high diversity of amphipods in this water body. It also presents the southernmost known localities of both species, and expands the checklist of …

Comparison Of The Chromosome Banding Patterns In Dryomys Laniger And D. Nitedula From Turkey, Ati̇lla Arslan, Teoman Kankiliç, Tarkan Yorulmaz, Tolga Kankiliç, Jan Zima
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The karyotypes of Dryomys laniger and D. Nitedula from Turkey were studied using C-banding and AgNOR staining. The standard karyotypes found in both species were fairly similar to previously published data (2n = 46, NF = 92 in D. Laniger; 2n = 48, NF = 96 in D. Nitedula). The C-banding pattern revealed a relatively small amount of heterochromatin in both karyotypes and C-heterochromatin was concentrated at centromeric areas of most autosomes and the X chromosome. Heterochromatin changes have apparently not been responsible for karyotypic divergences between the studied species. The AgNORs were recorded in the pericentromeric region of two …
