Western Australian Sheep Producer Survey 2018, Mandy Curnow, Janet Conte
Animal production and livestock published reports
This survey was commissioned in 2018 by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), following earlier surveys in 2011 and 2014 conducted as part of national producer surveys for the Cooperative Research Centre for Sheep Innovation (Sheep CRC). This report is therefore able to analyse respondents’ flock management over time.
The surveys were conducted by telephone with producers who had more than 500 sheep and were located in the Medium Rainfall Zone (MRZ) or Cereal Sheep Zone (CSZ). The sample sizes for the 2011, 2014 and 2018 surveys were 369, 368 and 389 respectively.
Implications Of Management Decisions On The Wa Sheep Flock In Response To Changing Markets, Kate Pritchett
Implications Of Management Decisions On The Wa Sheep Flock In Response To Changing Markets, Kate Pritchett
Animal production and livestock research reports
The Western Australian (WA) sheep industry is profitable and productive and includes more than 4000 individual producers, processors and exporters as well as countless associated businesses and industries.
The industry makes a significant contribution to both the state’s agricultural production and the WA economy. In 2016/17 the gross value of agricultural production (GVAP) from the WA sheep industry totalled $1.4 billion. There is continuing demand for both wool and meat in export markets, giving strong incentives for increasing production of both wool and sheepmeat. This affords producers an opportunity to increase the productivity of their ewe flock and to grow …

Edgar, Ward, and Stuart-Smith (2018) argue that Australian fishery stocks are suffering rapid declines and that to meet sustainability targets an expanded network of ‘no-fishing’ reserves is required. The three lines of evidence used were underwater visual surveys (UVSs), Australian catches, and one case study.

Summary Of The West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery Science And Modelling Review, Simon De Lestang, Jason R. How, Nick Caputi, Emma-Jade Tuffley, Mark Rossbach
Fisheries Research Reports
An independent peer review of the science and modelling associated with the West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery was undertaken in May/June 2018. The impetus behind this review was two-fold, i) to address industry concerns that stock assessment modelling was not reflecting what was being experienced by fishers on-water, and ii) to increase stakeholders understanding of, and confidence in, the stock assessment process while ensuring that the process was commensurate with contemporary scientific practices.

Mapping / monitoring in the marine environment can be a very costly exercise. Scientists from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development; Fisheries Division (FD) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have developed a small, low-cost automated camera system that, when fitted to commercial fishing gear, can achieve this at minimal cost. The POTBot (Pictures Of The Bottom) system is a cheap, small “smart” camera that can track its position globally and the date and time, and can record high-definition video and water temperature readings when it determines it has been deployed into the ocean.

Western Australian Feral Pig Strategy 2020-2025, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Biosecurity published reports
Management of invasive species is an important component of biosecurity. For species already established in Western Australia (WA), including feral pigs, effective management aims to reduce the impacts of those populations and detect occurrences of new populations, thereby preventing further harm to the State’s agriculture and biodiversity. Effective management also includes monitoring the density and distribution of established populations to define their boundaries and determine the effectiveness of control programs.
The foundations for a national biosecurity framework were established in 2007, with the development of the inaugural Australian Pest Animal Strategy (APAS). The Feral Pig Strategy (this Strategy) outlines the …

Background
Understanding the factors shaping population genetic structure is important for evolutionary considerations as well as for management and conservation. While studies have revealed the importance of palaeogeographic changes in shaping phylogeographic patterns in multiple marine fauna, the role of reproductive behaviour is rarely considered in reef fishes. We investigated the population genetics of three commercially important aggregating grouper species in the Indo-West Pacific, namely the camouflage grouper Epinephelus polyphekadion, the squaretail coral grouper Plectropomus areolatus, and the common coral trout P. leopardus, with similar life histories but distinct spatio-temporal characteristics in their patterns of forming spawning aggregations. …

2018 Lambing Survey, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Animal production and livestock published reports
The 2018 season brought challenging times for sheep producers in WA and there were wide reports of low lambing rates.
Many areas had a very late start coupled with low winter growth, but saw a wet warm spring bring high pasture growth rates (PGR). Other areas, particularly the South Coast and central south region recorded decile 1 rainfall and grew minimal pasture throughout the season (Appendix 4). All of this was on the back of a poor spring in 2017.
To better understand the impacts of poor and variable seasons on lambing and turnoff rates and to map the impact …

Bottom trawlers land around 19 million tons of fish and invertebrates annually, almost one-quarter of wild marine landings. The extent of bottom trawling footprint (seabed area trawled at least once in a specified region and time period) is often contested but poorly described. We quantify footprints using high-resolution satellite vessel monitoring system (VMS) and logbook data on 24 continental shelves and slopes to 1,000-m depth over at least 2 years. Trawling footprint varied markedly among regions: from < 10 % of seabed area in Australian and New Zealand waters, the Aleutian Islands, East Bering Sea, South Chile, and Gulf of Alaska to > 50% in some European seas. Overall, 14 % of the 7.8 million-km2 study area was trawled, and 86% was not trawled. Trawling activity …

Monitoring the temporal and spatial variability in recreational fishing provides necessary information for assessing resource sustainability, monitoring resource allocation and informing fisheries management. This is particularly important in inner Shark Bay because recreational fishing occurs in a World Heritage Area and Marine Park. The majority of boat-based recreational fishers in inner Shark Bay target Pink Snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) and three genetically distinct stocks of this species occur in the Denham Sound, Eastern Gulf and Freycinet Estuary Management Zones.

Protecting Breeding Stock Levels Of The Blue Swimmer Crab Resource In The South West : A Review Of Management Arrangements, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development
Fisheries Management Papers
This discussion paper identifies that the existing management arrangements do not adequately address the protection of the breeding stock across the resource because they have been developed at the scale of local estuaries and embayments. In particular, the arragements are not achieving appropriate levels of protection for mated, pre-spawned females, which become highly vulnerable to capture in late autumn, winter and spring.

Marine Aquarium Fish Resource Of Western Australia Harvest Strategy 2018-2022, Western Australia. Dept. Of Fisheries
Fisheries Management Papers
Harvest strategies for aquatic resources managed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (the Department) are formal documents that are prepared based on a formal policy (Department of Fisheries 2015) to support the decision-making processes and ensure consistency with the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD; Fletcher 2002) and Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM; Fletcher et al. 2010). The objectives of ESD are reflected in the objects of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994(FRMA), Section 3, and the Aquatic Resources Management Act 2016 (ARMA), Clause 9, which will replace the FRMA once enacted.

The Impact Of Marking Rates, Turn-Off And Mortality Rates On The Wa Sheep Flock, Kate Pritchett
Animal production and livestock research reports
The Western Australian sheep flock peaked at 38.4 million head in 1990. Following the collapse of the reserve price scheme for wool and subsequent low prices combined with improved returns for crops, the WA flock entered a period of decline. The WA flock had fallen to approximately 14.2 million at the beginning of 2016/17. The dramatically reduced flock has also undergone a change in structure over this time, with the proportion of wethers in the flock being reduced from 32% of the flock to around 7%, and the proportion of breeding ewes increasing to accommodate the increased importance of lamb …

Globally, marine species’ distributions are being modified due to rising ocean temperatures. Increasing evidence suggests a circum-global pattern of poleward extensions in the distributions of many tropical herbivorous species, including the ecologically important rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens. Adaptability of a species to such new environments may be heavily influenced by the composition of their gastrointestinal microbe fauna, which is fundamentally important to animal health. Siganus fuscescens thus provides an opportunity to assess the stability of gastrointestinal microbes under varying environmental conditions. The gastrointestinal microbial communities of S. fuscescens were characterized over 2,000 km of Australia’s western coast, from tropical to …

Monitoring communities of fish is important for the management and sustainability of fisheries and marine ecosystems. Baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVs) are among the most effective nondestructive techniques for sampling bony fishes and elasmobranchs (sharks, rays, and skates). However, BRUVs sample visually conspicuous biota; hence, some taxa are undersampled or not recorded at all. We compared the diversity of fishes characterized using BRUVs with diversity detected via environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. We sampled seawater and captured BRUVs imagery at 48 locales that included reef and seagrass beds inside and outside a marine reserve (Jurien Bay in Western Australia). Eighty-two …
