Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was carried out to determine Hyalommaticks and the natural infections of Hyalommaspecies with Theileria annulata in cattle and their shelters in Malatya province between May 1998 and January 1999. Selected areas in Malatya province were visited to collect ticks from cows and their shelters during the study. Salivary glands of Hyalommaspecies were dissected and thin films were prepared. The nymphs collected from cattle and their shelters were kept at 26 °C and 85% relative humudity. Unfed adults of Hyalom- maspecies taken from engorged nymphs and collected from shelters were kept at 37°C and 85% relative humudity for at …

Prevalence Of Rotavirus, Escherichia Coli K99 And O157:H7 In Healthy Dairy Cattle Herds In Van, Turkey, Mehmet Çabalar, Banur Boynukara, Ti̇mur Gülhan, İ. Hakki Eki̇n
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of rotavirus, Escherichia coli K99 and O157:H7 in healthy dairy cattle herds in Van and environs, Turkey. Some of the cattle herds had a history of recurrent neonatal diarrhoea for previous years, and even while sampling was being done, some newborn calves were diarrhoeic. Three hundred and twelve faecal specimens from dairy cattle farms free of clinically apparent diarrhoea were tested both for the presence of rotaviruses by PAGE silver staining and for Escherichia coli K99 and O157:H7 by latex agglutination using specific antisera after the growth of each colony. The enteropathogenic …

In this study, amplification of the rinderpest virus (RPV) fusion (F) gene with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloning of the F gene in Escherichia coli were reported. For this purpose, first total mRNA from Vero cells infected with vaccine strain of RPV was obtained and then cDNA from this mRNA preparation was acquired with reverse transcription. In PCR, cDNA from infected Vero cells and F gene specific primers were used and the F gene was amplified. Both the PCR product and the cloning vector pUC19 were cut with EcoRI and HindIII restriction enzymes. By using T4 DNA ligase, insert …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to investigate the size distribution of steroidogenic and non-steroidogenic luteal cells throughout the oestrus cycle. Twelve corpora lutea collected from different stages of the oestrus cycle were used. Corpora lutea collected from nonpregnant cows were dissociated into single-cell suspensions by enzyme treatments. Cells were stained for 3\beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3\beta-HSD) activity, a marker for steroidogenic cells. The sizes of 3b-HSD positive (steroidogenic) and negative cells (nonsteroidogenic) were measured with an ocular micrometer. Very small cells (

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was conducted to evaluate the pharmacologic effects of Polygonum lapathifolium L. (Polygonaceae), growing naturally in Turkey. The antiinflammatory activity of the ethanol extract of the root and rhizome of P. lapathifolium was evaluated using carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats. Intraperitoneal pretreatment with extract at doses ranging from 100 to 500 mg/kg significantly inhibited the acute phase of this experimental model of the inflammatory process in a dose-dependent manner. At maximal dose (500 mg/kg), it exhibited a significantly higher action when compared with those of other doses and was found to be 1.08 times as active as indomethacin. The …

Tilmicosin was slowly eliminated from the serum and lung with mean half-lives of 30.18 ± 2.38 and 75.74 ± 3.67 hours, respectively. The mean maximum concentration of the drug in the lungs was found to be 6.2 times greater that of serum. Serum and lung tilmicosin concentrations reached peak values 4.66 ± 2 and …

Effects Of Propionibacterium Strain P5 On In-Vitro Volatile Fatty Acids Production And Digestibility Of Fiber And Starch, Veysel Akay, Richard G. Dado
Effects Of Propionibacterium Strain P5 On In-Vitro Volatile Fatty Acids Production And Digestibility Of Fiber And Starch, Veysel Akay, Richard G. Dado
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objectives of this study were to determine whether Propionibacterium affects in-vitro VFA production and/or increases the digestibility of fiber and starch. A 4 x 4 x 4 factorial arrangement was used. The main factors were feed source, length of fermentation, and level of added Propionibacterium. Fermentations were conducted in batch cultures with Propionibacterium added to the flasks just prior to the addition of rumen inoculum. The total VFA, acetate, and propionate concentrations increased 9, 5, and 18%, respectively with the addition of Propionibacterium. Propionibacterium decreased dry-matter digestibility by 2% and fiber digestibility by 14%. A second study was conducted …
Multiple-Trait Analysis Using Bayesian Methods In Animal Breeding: A Gibbs Sampling Approach, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat
Multiple-Trait Analysis Using Bayesian Methods In Animal Breeding: A Gibbs Sampling Approach, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Most animal breeding experiments are based on more than one economically important trait measured in each individual. In the statistical analysis of the resulting data, traits recorded in the same individuals are often considered one at a time. Usually we are interested, however, not only in the mode of inheritance of a particular trait but also in its relationships with other traits. Multivariate analyses are required to make inferences about genetic and phenotypic correlations between traits, but point estimates of such parameters can be poor even when breeding data on hundreds of animals are used. Bayesian methods exclude variance matrices …

It was observed that on the 1^{st} day of hatching, the lungs had the same properties as adults and that there was no structural difference between the right and left lungs. The average diameter of atria rose according to the age and were 20.733±0.868 µ and 21.413±0.929 µ on the 1^{st} …
