“My Tummy Tells Me” Cognitions, Barriers And Supports Of Parents And School-Age Children For Appropriate Portion Sizes, Kaitlyn M. Eck, Colleen L. Delaney, Mirian P. Leary, Oluremi A. Famodou, Melissa D. Olfert, Karla P. Shelnutt, Carol Bryd-Bredbenner Jan 2018

“My Tummy Tells Me” Cognitions, Barriers And Supports Of Parents And School-Age Children For Appropriate Portion Sizes, Kaitlyn M. Eck, Colleen L. Delaney, Mirian P. Leary, Oluremi A. Famodou, Melissa D. Olfert, Karla P. Shelnutt, Carol Bryd-Bredbenner

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Larger portion sizes have increased in tandem with the rise in obesity. Elucidation of the cognitions of children and parents related to portion size is needed to inform the development of effective obesity prevention programs. This study examined cognitions of parents (n = 36) and their school-age children (6 to 11 years; n = 35) related to portion sizes via focus group discussions. Parents and children believed controlling portion sizes promoted health and weight control. Some parents felt controlling portions was unnecessary, particularly if kids were a healthy weight because kids can self-regulate intake. Barriers to serving appropriate portions identified …

Comparing Snp Panels And Statistical Methods For Estimating Genomic Breed Composition Of Individual Animals In Ten Cattle Breeds, Jun He, Yage Guo, Jiaqi Xu, Hao Li, Anna Fuller, Richard G. Tait Jr., Xiao-Lin Wu, Stewart Bauck Jan 2018

Comparing Snp Panels And Statistical Methods For Estimating Genomic Breed Composition Of Individual Animals In Ten Cattle Breeds, Jun He, Yage Guo, Jiaqi Xu, Hao Li, Anna Fuller, Richard G. Tait Jr., Xiao-Lin Wu, Stewart Bauck

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Background: SNPs are informative to estimate genomic breed composition (GBC) of individual animals, but selected SNPs for this purpose were not made available in the commercial bovine SNP chips prior to the present study. The primary objective of the present study was to select five common SNP panels for estimating GBC of individual animals initially involving 10 cattle breeds (two dairy breeds and eight beef breeds). The performance of the five common SNP panels was evaluated based on admixture model and linear regression model, respectively. Finally, the downstream implication of GBC on genomic prediction accuracies was investigated and discussed in …

Discovering And Recovering The Nineteenth-Century Journals Of Martha E. Mcmillan In An American Women Writer’S Course: A Collaborative Digital Recovery Project, Michelle M. Wood, Lynn A. Brock, Gregory A. Martin, Adam John Wagner

Martha McMillan Research Papers

The following essay tells a story about an undergraduate American Women Writer's course, the University archives, a nineteenth-century journal, and a Digital Recovery project. The essay explains that the story of undergraduates and their work to discover and to recover a primary text within the context of a single course could not have happened without collaboration. Because our story is a story of collaboration, I cannot tell it alone. I am Michelle Wood, an Associate Professor of English who teaches American Literature. During spring semester 2015, I collaborated with Lynn Brock, the Dean of Library Sciences, to create an archival …

Martha And Her Help: A Different Kind Of Relationship, Victoria E. Krus Aug 2016

Martha And Her Help: A Different Kind Of Relationship, Victoria E. Krus

Martha McMillan Research Papers

In nineteenth century America, middle-class families often had domestic servants in their home. Domestic service looked different in various parts of the country and at different points in the century, but a common theme of racial tension and class struggle defined servant/employer relationships throughout the hundred year period. In Ohio, Martha McMillan recorded the events on her family’s farm in a series of journals from 1867 up until her death in 1913. Thousands of pages portray the day-to-day events of a farmer’s wife, her children, and her relationship with farm employees. In contrast to nineteenth-century employer/employed attitudes and practices, Martha …

Nomadic Knowledge Of The Yak: A Case Study In The Khangai Mountains, Mongolia, Jesse Geary Apr 2011

Nomadic Knowledge Of The Yak: A Case Study In The Khangai Mountains, Mongolia, Jesse Geary

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

It is extremely important to probe and preserve the knowledge of nomadic herders of Mongolia. There is no formal piece of literature that dictates how these clever humans survive. Their lifestyle requires a vast skill set spanning from construction knowledge, to navigational skills, to a deep understanding of their animals. One attains this knowledge through years of observation, listening, and attempting to mimic their parents. In this way, knowledge is passed on from one generation to the next. Investigating herder’s knowledge of the yak provides a window into the animal husbandry practices of Mongolian nomads. The herders in the central …
